2:37 new override material, roughness to the max, specular to min
3:15 set override material in view layer property for cycles
3:37 create one or more grease pencils
4:10 line art object properties > viewport display > In Front!
4:15 world space/screen space
5:28 advanced settings with nodes
its a very good tutorial but I found it too long, so there are timemarks or just reminders for me
that override feature is such a good one, I tend to render a lot of passes with different materials to have more control when comping and painting over, this will just save me soooo much time.
The render style is amazing, and exactly what I was looking for - thanks!
Learned Override feature, very useful for me in upcoming projects.
This tutorial is gold, thank you very much for sharing it
Wow. I’ve been looking for an override solution for forever! Thx!
Thank you so much🤩I followed your tutorial and this is so helpful!
Omg thank you so much!! For me as an artist, this saves me SO much time!!! Wow!!!!
Thank you for this!
waouh really efficient and simple for an impressive result. Thanks a lot
Amazing tut! Thanks :)
Superb! Thank You, Sir.
Thanks, Chip!
Thanks Chipp.
this is great! thanks so much
Nice video!
Thank you.
Thank you!
you are the god!nice job bro!
So cool, thanks.
Hi, amazing and concise tutorial. Liked and subscribed. Tried this in Blender 3.4.1 and it is working, albeit with a few changes.
For anyone trying to find where to select Contours, Creases and Intersection in Modifier for Grease Pencil -> Scene Line Art (Blender 3.4.1), you can find them under the Edge Types tab. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the sub!
As Dame, said, excellent tutorial. Been through a few videos on this workflow that were meandering and 30+ min long.
You should try SIMPLE SKETCH, it's currently in open beta and has been for months. Makes it much easier: cw1.me/discord
Thank you
Interesting, thank you
Excellent. Straightforward, clear and to the point. Thanks.
great tutorial...
Definitely gonna use this workflow for my projects !!! Thanks as always ❤️
Great tutorial. I screenshot each step and made a handy PDF doc for myself, so I can always reference each step, and I add a couple notes for my own. For example, it wouldn't work for me at first because I had some custom settings in Ray Tracing some nodes in Compositing. Also color lights tends to ruin the effect and are not override. In general AWESOME work. Thank you VERY much!
We have a free addon in beta that does all this for you called SIMPLE SKETCH you can get it at our cw1.me/discord
@@ChippWalters Absolutely fantastic! I'll check it out ASAP
@@ChippWaltersInstalled it in Blender 4 but can‘t seem to find the add-on folder 🤔
cool dude
omg this is so good I never knew about the override material and I've wanted it for ages!
so good! amazingly explained :) thank you!!
I may have to stick with 2.92 for now. I understand a lot of people have wanted to use Blender as a 3D storyboard or anime application, though I couldn't afford a permanent SketchUp license before the takedown, so I bought Sketch Style for the "clay" CAD work to get around this problem.
This is amazing. Thanks for sharing this tutorial!
If you like this then you should try my new SIMPLE SKETCH addon which is freely available while in beta: cw1.me/discord
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH CHIPP you just saved my ass. You rock!!
Great tutorial, is there a way to animate this line art modifier in order to create an animation that makes it look like the line art is being drawn on? Like animating strokes in AfterEffects
Sorry, not that I know of.
Wow! Amazing! ... Do you know if you can bake the line art into an export (like gltf)?
Sorry, I don't know
This is awesome! Does it also work with ortographic cameras? Like if i want to make a perfect front view instead of perspective.
IDK, try it and report back!
@@ChippWalters It does indeed work! It needs some adjustments, but it will be great for sketches and blueprints.
Today I learned about override, which will be very handy, but in general this is a very useful video, I'm looking forward to trying these techniques out, thanks!
Override didn't work for me for some reason, but I've managed to make what I need, thank you)
Very nice tutorial!. My issue is that when i add the grease pencil its not accurate with my model..it seems like offset in a way.
Check out our simple sketch add-on at our cw1.me/discord. It's in beta and is free to use.
Hey chip. Awesome tutorial.
i've been running into an issue, the lines are pixilated. Any solution for that ???
Check out the free SIMPLE SKETCH at cw1.me/discord
Great info Chip. If I import this model into after effects, will it retain the Line Art look?
No, sorry. It's a feature of Blender.
Thanks for sharing! Is there a way to make an material exception for override? I use a line art Modifier which is an geometry node instead of the blender one itself. It seems that the override also work on the material which include my geometry node, so I want to make an exception for that specific material.
Not that I know of
thanks for this trick . It seem faster than Freestyle I`m getting pure BW with change emission to white and bumo value to 4
You should check my discord for the free open beta of SIMPLE SKETCH. Makes this process simpler. cw1.me/discord
What about Freestyle? Is this better use? It kind of seems easier in a way. But I'd like to see you do this with a interior scene with characters in it like an office? to see how it line arts it all. I'm newish to blender 3.05 and i want to use line art output for doing comic panels.
Freestyle is no longer considered the top of the line drawing technique for blender. It has been replaced with line art. It still is there for legacy purposes.
I really like this line art trick. But how would someone bake this look onto a texture?
Don't think it's possible
This is awesome. Can we make a blueprint effect with this?
Sure, in materials for the line art, set the color to white instead of black then use a new world background color set to blue. Also set override to blue emissive.
Great alternative for sketch style , thanks Chipp W.
@@ChippWalters Thank you 🤘
HOW DO YOU BLEND THE COLOR IMAGE WITH THE LINE ART PICT ? is it done with the compositor ? ... im talking about the screen pict from your video intro ! Thanks
Photoshop
Hello. Thanks For the video ! It works for me, but not when I wanna render the picture. In render mode, sometimes the lines disappear and I have to hide and unhide them and it works, but still when i press F12 it doesn't work, i see only the block in front of it. Any idea what can be wrong ?
Please check out my free SIMPLE SKETCH addon at cw1.me/discord It automatically does all this (and more) for you.
Anyone know how to properly get the transition effect from line-art to full-render like at the start and end?
Photoshop
@@ChippWalters Thanks. If I dont have photoshop what keywords I have to google/search for to find something appropriate for me. As in: Is that transition effect called anything?
woot
Where is the Grease pencil -> Scene line art located
Check out the free SIMPLE SKETCH beta at cw1.me/discord
i am also getting the 3d surfaces with the line art above it ........could you please help......i want only lines
Try the free beta of SIMPLE SKETCH: cw1.me/discord
this worked totally fine for me in 2.93, but i recently updated to 3.0 and it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas on what i need to change please? thanks!
Sorry, I don't have any idea. You might check out my SIMPLE SKETCH product that is currently in open beta right now on my discord. It automates all of this for you. cw1.me/discord
@@ChippWalters thanks for the quick reply! Will do
I don't really get it. Can you explain for me?
If all you want is separate artline and original objects into two different layers, you can bake artline in the modifier tab(which make artline independent), and then render them in two layers.
see other comment
do you have a blend file for this?
Sorry but I'm sure it's gone by now.
Great tutorial thanks. is it possible to slide as a stroke effects on object 's contour using line art? In the words, How to trim line art strokes and then how to scroll along contours?
No, that's not possible.
Is the Line Art dynamic, could you basically just animate parts of the mesh and it would just work? Great tips as always!
Yes.
How do u disable shadows
Just turn them off in the opengl display settings.
Hey, I have the latest version of blender, I followed these steps to the letter. However when I press f12, it only shows the override with no lines on it. I can see the lines on my rendered viewport. Just not when I am actually trying to render. I have played about with settings etc, but I can't seem to get it to show on the render, is there something I am doing wrong?
You should download my free SIMPLE SKETCH addon from cw1.me/discord It does all this for you.
you have to wait until the render is finished, the lines are added last
Hi Chipp! Please the file on either BlenderMarket or Gumroad.
It's available on Patreon.
3:35
OK - but is there a way to save this as an .svg file ?
Not currently. For that you'll need to use freestyle.
i dont have the override button in view layer
Switch to cycles rendering
@@ChippWalters Thank you!
Can't figure out how did you get such a nice anti-aliased lines? Mine look like pencil in Paintbrush . I assume it's because of a large resolution? Still thank you for the tutorial!
Yes, high resolution render
Not sure what's happening for me but I'm getting some sort of inverted colour thing happening, the lines are white and everywhere else is black. Adding an invert node in the compositor doesn't fix it, just washes it out
Help us help you: cw1.me/helpushelpyou
I get lost as soon as you open the Compositing. Mine is empty and I have no idea how to follow along after that point.
Check out my free Simple Sketch which should help you: cw1.me/discord
How do you deal with gaps?
There shouldn't be any gaps if you're using line art correctly
@@ChippWalters You'd think, but I just followed your steps.
@@_Bayul Make sure your line art is in front of the object. Check the steps again to see what I'm talking about
can this work on 2.9.1 ?
No.
I kept hearing "HBAO" rather than HBO and was confused, haha... HBAO = Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion
HBO = heavy black outline. Sorry I should have been more clear.
tried this but all i could get override to do was turn off render transparent while the render transparent was still checked
ok the box was actually rendering my fualt but its still not overriding ANYTHING
Definitely try the beta version of simple Sketch which is free at cw1.me/discord
Doing this in v3.0b with partial success. My render output is set to 1920x1080. At 52%, the line art appears in the render window with a transparent background for some seconds, then gets overwritten by the model/scene such that the line art is gone. It's there first looking correct, then the model/scene objects cover it. Very weird.
Try my SIMPLE SKETCH addon. It's currently in open beta. I think it should do the trick for you. cw1.me/discord
Also, check the video. Make sure you set the lines to render in front of the render.
@@ChippWalters Yep, did that thanks. When the image renders small, it appears with line art perfectly. When larger, above a specific percentage, it's like the line art goes to the back so you cannot see it. No other settings changed, just render format % value.
I have the same issue. Rending 4000px X 4000px and the line-art briefly appears, then disappears leaving the beauty (material override) pass. Did a 512X512 render and as @Bill392 mentioned, the lineart renders over the image perfectly.
@@bill392 i think i found a fix, imine did the same, i turned off all denoising data and it worked
I'm finding that the render time for a complex scene is REALLY long using this technique.
You should check out my SIMPLE SKETCH addon in beta at cw1.me/discord
is there a way to get the addon without Discord?
@@tarvitz I'll be releasing it soon
Thanks
@@ChippWalters Hi Walters! Where can I get the SIMPLE SKETCH addon, outside Discord?
it totally doesn't work 👎
