Blender - Render Separate Grease Pencil / Ink Layer Pass

  • Rendering a separate ink lines pass for Grease Pencil is easy but the procedure isn't obvious, as Blender doesn't have a checkbox for it in the layer pass settings. So, here's a quick demo on how to set the render up, do a multipass render, and combine them in Photoshop.
This also works if you're doing post in After Effects, Resolve, etc - but for demo purposes, I'm keeping it simple.

thanks but this could have been a five minute tutorial

I probably could have done it in 30 seconds, but the goal was to make sure no one was left wondering how to accomplish the goal.... not to speed run through the process.
When I'm teaching, I'm trying fully explain both the process and the reasons... not impress someone with how fast I can do it.

Thank you sir. The Holdout option was the only one which worked with Grease pencil. The traditional approach where you just hide the collection from View Layer - renders blank. At least starting from 4.0 and higher

PNG compression is lossless though. Even when you crank the compression up to max it will still be lossless, just take more time to compress and try to reduce the file size as much as possible. Decompression is asymmetric and fast, regardless of how long it took to compress. That was something I had to learn about PNG. :)

Quite true, I always forget about that. Thanks for the correction! :)

Hey this is great info, one issue I'm having is that my Diffuse passes are messed up (mostly black) perhaps because I'm using Shader to RGB with Color Ramp directly into the Mat Output to give it a toon shaded look...I just want to get a clean separate pass without the Grease Pencil lines to composite in post... only way I've managed to do so is in Cycles using the Noisy Image from my Render Layers. Can't figure out how to do the same thing in EEVEE. Any ideas?

Heya - offhand, I'm not sure. I use only Eevee (always), and use various passes all the time. Diffuse->RGB->Ramp is a fav, and certainly should be working.
One thing I'll suggest to start the diag: for your view layer, enable *every* possible pass (yes, all - even those you dont need) and save them all as a multiEXR. Then take that file external, where you can solo each pass and see if you can find a correlation between what you've got there and what's in your scene. It sounds like you *might* have the GP lines combining in the pass itself, instead of splitting them into a separate one. Good luck :)

Appreciate the response! Yeah for whatever reason that simple node setup makes everything pure black -- straight Diffuse into material output works fine, but StoRGB/ramp into output = black... Could be something else I'm missing. I basically ended up just separating my line pass into a separate scene, and turned the lines off in the main scene. I really want to convert to EEVEE pipeline and never touch Cycles again. Really hope they implement the big features like light linking and shadow catchers into EEVEE NEXT. @@thorn-

@@frostudio hey you can disable it in one view layer by clicking the little tick in the box. It excludes it from the scene. The tick is only for collections

Hi, I did it and tried to overlay outline on top of render, but it appears that grease only dont get composited, and it does not line up (I love to use bit of lens distortion) what to do XD

I don't render with lens distortion, so have no advice on how to resolve any issues that happen when using it. Sorry :/
