  • Record of Brewer Cemetery - Farmingdale, New Jersey
"Record of the Brewer Cemetery, Farmingdale, New Jersey," compiled by Constance Cornwell, is a typescript dated about 1946, and can be found at the New Jersey State Library. A photocopy of this typescript was included in the William B. Bogardus Collection, and a scanned PDF is now up online.
Record of the Brewer Cemetery - Farmingdale, New Jersey
The burials that are found in this cemetery are primarily from the 19th century, but it is apparent that the property was originally the family burial grounds of the family of Adam Brewer (1696-1768/69) of "Squancome, Shrewsbury Township." Adam Brewer, in his will dated 22 August 1768, sets aside one acre to be reserved for a burying ground.
Google Maps places the Brewer cemetery in Howell Township (which is incorrect, the cemetery is physically in the Borough of Farmingdale). It is located on Lakewood-Farmingdale Rd. (Rte 524). Howell Township was created out of Shrewsbury Township in 1801. In 1903 the Borough of Farmingdale was formed out of Howell Township.
A map of Monmouth County, New Jersey from the 1770s (exact date unknown) is online courtesy of Rutgers Special Collections and Archives. This map has few details, but Shark River is labeled along the right side of the map (enlarge the image to see this). On the modern Google map (pan out) it can be seen that the Brewer cemetery is about five miles directly west of Shark River. Although a scale is not included on the 1770s map, it appears probable that the cemetery might be in the general location of what is marked as "Squancom Bridge."
The cemetery transcriptions include numerous surnames other than BREWER. Some are related to the Brewers by marriage. Of the Brewers, the oldest burials are of John E. Brewer (1754-1837), his wife, Constant (Hulet), and George Brewer (1770-1851). John E. Brewer and George Brewer were brothers, sons of Elazerus Brewer and Francis Morris. The few other Brewer burials are members of their families. This group of Brewers are descendants of Adam Brouwer of Gowanus, Long Island.

I visited Brewer Cemetery thanks to this video! It is amazing! The most impressive part for me it is the little grave for Richard (not in the video), a baby who died with only 3 months and whose tomb is always accompanied by a teddy bear and a candle (apparently someone in nowadays change the teddy bear every now and then...).

An ancestor of both my husband and mine, Catherine Cosgrove Megill, and her husband who is an ancestor of my husband's, David Megill, are buried in Brewer Cemetery. Catherine was born about 1750 and died 27 Jan 1835 in Howell. Her husband was born 8 Dec 1753 in Scotland and died 26 Mar 1807 in Howell. He, too, has ancestors (Robbins) buried in the Old Quaker Cemetery (Lower Squankum Friends Burial Ground).

oldest documented burial I could find is Adam Jacobs Brouwer b.1696 d.1769 .. the Brouwer long line goes all the way back to 1619 Dutch German settlers who immigrated to NY then eventually to NJ

Just like being there. It's so wonderful that you've taken the time to share this with others. I was wondering if you might take some information from the stones next time you visit the cemetery. Jacob, Adam and Elazarus Brouwer (Brewer) are my 6th, 7th and 8th great grand fathers ....there may be some relatives at this site. O

I know what you mean. I know where this is and have passed it more times than I can count when going to Farmingdale. Never been in it though as it is and was very overgrown. BTW check out Adelphia Cemetery. Still used to day and is very old cemetery. If I remember right first on in Monmouth County.

      Lesley Bunting Dear Cousin....
I stumbled upon this video while doing family research. Jacob is my 7th and Adam is my 6th ggf. Elazerus an uncle. George, my 4th ggf came to Philly at the age of 14 to live with, I believe, a relative Samuel Clark (his mother was Lydia Clark) after his father George died in 1788. I searched the surname Bunting in my DNA tree on Ancestry with plenty of hits indicating 4th to 8th distant cousins. When you think about it, the cousins are all out there. But the technology behind the ability to connect...mind boggling!

May be many graves in there that are unmarked. Lower Squankum probably the samething. To many "open" spaces by graves. Can't find records for that cemetery. ONlly thing there is a list on Monmouth County GenWeb page of the stones. I think this cemetery as well.

I live about 20 minutes from this place, if I were to check this place out. Is there anything in particular to look for maybe?

New Jersey Outdoor Adventures I just paid a visit today, I found at least one civil war tombstone. However some one put a new marker on top of it, with the name Alexander Grumiur. Since the tombstone was nothing more than a small piece of rubble. There were also some flags next to some tombstones I couldn’t quite read, so I assume that they might be civil war related too. All in all, it was pretty fun to check that out, I wonder if there are more tombstone tucked back deeper in the woods.
