- My introduction, overview and thoughts on using the Akai APC Mini with Light Rider and ADJ mydmx GO.
The MIDI interface is only supported on the iOS version of Light Rider and mydmx GO. Android and Amazon Fire versions of Light Rider and mydmx GO cannot be used with the external MIDI controllers.
The APC Mini comes supplied with a USB cable. You'll need a suitable Lightning to USB Camera Adapter - available from Apple. Alternative cheaper versions are available from other suppliers such as Amazon. I'm using an "Elecjoy USB Camera Adapter" from Amazon which costs around £13 at the time of recording.

Thanks for a great review. I am so glad for this new option from the developers of Lightrider. I have been struggling lately with my iPads not being as receptive/sensitive with may keypress. This, as limited as you may say, is far better than missing a cue or drop. Also the suggestion to identify the keys with clear labels is a great idea. My DJ’s may actually become more creative instead of using the default presets. I am sure the developers will add more functionality for the APCmini with future updates.
Great run through video, thanks for that! I just ordered my APC yesterday’s now can‘t wait to get my hands on it.
Main advantage when using it during a gig is that all 40 presets are readily accessible. The way I will use them is to pre-program 8 base colors/moods (ocean blue - cool club turquoise - djungle green .... until „all in RGBP“ ...you get it :-) and relate these to the 8 preset rows from left to right. In the 5 column for reach row I will put the most basic and slow or even static scene at the bottom row 1, the wildest and fastest one with most color variety at the top row 5. So I don‘t have to adjust speed/spread/fan etc. during live operation.Instead I can easily increase/decrease lighting intensity by moving up/down in any given row or change color scheme by moving between rows. Catching a chorus or drop and moving to a matching high intensity
Scheme will be very easy tjat way. And the other way round as well.
As for labeling the buttons, I have already successfully used a brother p-Touch with transparent strips and black printout. With a bit of precision cutting and aligning every button can be labeled as required while remaining transparent.
Brilliant. Please share some photos here or on the Facebook page if you can: facebook.com/groups/LightRiderHelpSupport/
Thanks!
Great video . Might be the only one on TH-cam at the moment. I too ordered one a few weeks ago. I do not have lag on mine. In fact this is much more responsive then using the iPad. The iPad lags for me. Another thing, the buttons on the sub dimmers work for me but not for you, hmmm. I also find myself using this more to program then to take on gigs. I also think it can be further developed to make it more useful. So much potential in this controller. It is very fun to use this controller to “freestyle” light scenes. I love being able to trigger scenes without having to scroll the screen. And being able to dim multiple lights with ease.
Great review. I've got Android tablet and I definitely believe Lightrider myself DMX Go app needs to mature significantly before it can be taken seriously.
I have to say, I don't use Light Rider/mydmx GO on Android as I just haven't found it to be reliable enough. I have used iOS at every gig for the past two years and it has been solid.
Has anybody try with an Android tablet?
The Android version does not have any MIDI control so you cannot use the APC Mini.
@@N3voX As stated above Im trying to use it but it's just not reliable enough. For instance om last gig the app kept showing two myDMX devices and screwing up the fixtures rendering them useless. Also everytime my WiFi changes status the app keeps alerting that it's stopping. I've fed this back to ADJ and Lightrider but Im giving up on Android and going to get a cheap IOS devicexjust to run the lights.
Best video for the last 3 months) Great. Is the AKAI just plug and go? No any setting?
Yes, just plug it in and off you go. No config required.
Here is a quick post to help users who wish to label their keypads. I found that using Dymo Labels (Black on Clear) worked for me but they didn’t stay on the silicone keys very well. So I tried using clear packing tape first (applied evenly across the keys). This worked best because it gave the label something to stick too. I could easily remove the label afterwards if I changed any presets. I found that the clear packing tape didn’t interfere with any function or keypress. Hope this helps!
Sounds like a top tip - thanks!
I’ve been looking for a clean way to label the buttons. I saw styleflip sells a custom skin but didn’t want to drop $20 on it.
Thank you very much for the tutorial of mydmx GO connected to 3D simulator.
洪 how to Connected myDMX go on 3D?
Hi, do you think it's possible to use midi commands to lightrider with ableton Live. I would like to trigger my favorite scenes during a song using a midi sequence. I only succeed at linking the tempo. Thanks
So the consensus is that one should go with an IOS tablet to get less drops from the hardware? I’ve had some weird issues with android and I’m looking into purchasing an iPad
great breakdown also good content
I wish they would add MIDI to the Android version. I just need to be able to scroll through presets using a foot switch.
Me too, and auto scrolling of the screen presets seems mandatory too as he mentions.
How do you connect the lights? Is there some kind of DMX interface box?
What are the benefits of this setup?
Does this work with the akai apc40 mk2?
Hi There
Super helpful video thank you .
I’m considering buying the Akai mini to use with my DMX go ,Just wondering a year on if any improvements have been implemented between the two devices. To make them more compatible. can you activate gobos ?
Many thanks.
From Bren
No updates to functionality I'm afraid; in fact right now there is a bug which prevents the app even starting if you have an APC Mini connected but I happen to know a fix is in progress and out for Beta testing (I was testing it myself last night). I don't know when it will be released though.
Hello . I have 3 types of Lights, but using the fader on the AKAI unfortunately works to select the dimmer but immediately afterwards the command no longer responds. how can it be solved?
Hi, do you Know if it’s possible To séquence a Light show In Ableton Live in thé real Life? I,ve tried ans didn’t succeed except the tempo Link. Any Tuto? Thanks
Can you move you xyz axis on moving heads, or assign that function with the sliders? Thanks for the video!
You cannot adjust Pan or Tilt using the APC Mini :-(
After years, how is it working for you?
HI
Great video
The best is This apps no prg...
I got small club want to know if the software can control all my fixtures
I have 20 moving heads + 100 showjockey bar led pixel scenografix bar
Dont want to prg complex software, im along in the boot, want to mix and control the lights un same Time.
What is the max fixtures you can use with the software.
Want To use a 8 dmx signal Box to plug the controller, to get faster dmx signal, instead of linking all the fixtures in chain ( dont have To pass by all the fixtures To send the signal to the last one)
Thanks
Have you tried with a Behringer FCB1010 ?
There are USB-A to Lightning cables. I have a couple of them, and this eliminates the need for the Camera Kit adapter.
Have you tried something else like sending midi from ipad to the other iPad on dmxgo
No, I'm sorry, I haven't. Any MIDI device would have to emulate the notes sent from the APC Mini as that's the only mapping built into Light Rider/mydmx GO. At the moment, there's no (easy) way to create your own MIDI mapping.
use footcontroller?
So did lightriders developers set the apc to light each button as we are seeing here? Or did you map it
The Light Rider app has built-in mapping as standard for this device. Light Rider specifically mention this model in their documentation. It *is* feasible to map other devices but it's not straightforward or even formally supported.
Any way to control it with a foot controller for live stage use? Even to switch scenes
This is the real question. Would love a foot controller for say 4 scenes and a bank up and down. Using LR on a tablet whilst playing bass at the same time is fine, but not easy. There's a real gap in the market for proper foot controllers to control lighting for self contained acts.
Has the is been improved at all in the last couple years?
There have been no changes that I'm aware of.
Do you think it's possible to send midi commands like this via Ableton link?
As far as I know, Ableton Link is only able to send timing/sync messages. It cannot send Note messages which is what the Akai APC Mini uses to communicate with Light Rider/mydmx GO.
@@LightRiderTips I see, so as long as you have some kind of direct midi input the app will register it?
Yes, I believe so. It is expecting to receive it via USB though.
Hey, Great video!
I am looking to have the exact same setup, only with an audio input coming from a mixer as well, would this be possible do you know?
Good question, I'm not sure what happens if you connect a camera adaptor to an iPad. LR can use an external microphone (if you plug in a headset, for example, LR will recognise and use this as a mic rather than the onboard one). I've never tried using an external mic with the camera adaptor connected. I'll try to get a moment to test it...
Hi, you seem to know a lot about it. Having a mydmx go interface, I can't find how to use my Wifly to extend my range equipment . There is an option i can't activate. How does it work? Thanks
mydmx GO has no built-in WiFLY, so you cannot just connect a mydmx GO to Wi-FLY fixtures wirelessly. You need a WiFLY transmitter such as the EXR Battery. You could also run a DMX cable to your first WiFLY fixture and then use that fixture to broadcast WiFLY to other wireless fixtures.
@@LightRiderTips sorry, my explanation was not good, i've got a mydmxgo and a Wifly Exr battery. So what is possible ?
@@top-voice1674 The just connect DMX OUT of mydmx GO to DMX IN on WiFLY EXR. You're good to go.
@@LightRiderTips i will try it!
@@LightRiderTips thanks but it doesn't resolve my problem . In my setup i would like to transmit from Mydmx go to the Wifly exr battery without any wire, in the case where my other fixtures would be 20 meters away for exemple. There is a wifly option in light rider, how do we make that option available? Would it be the key, or i need an Exr Battery to transmit and another one to receive ? Thank for you help.
american dj my dmx 2.1 please tutorial
How u made rgb leds work?? 😕
Sorry, I don't understand. Are you asking about RGB lights? This video is about the Akai APC Mini.
@@LightRiderTips he means how the leds on the apc are mapped to colors. The presets in lightrider are great as you have 64 wich would be perfect if they can be mapped to an novation launchpad. If you have lets say 64 presets in the app and map 32 of these to a novation you can have the right colorbutton that matches the colors of your lights. The other 32 presets can be scenes triggered by the launchpad mini 32 buttons The app is great and very powerfull but to make things complete a launcpad is ideal to trigger presets. Lightrider + novation launchpad series would be a very nice combo.
