You are not alone ! 999 was the ultimate superbike when I was a teenager. Got a 2006 for 4K€ last year. Had to do quite a bit of work on it, but it is so nice to have in the garage. 140bhp is enough on the road, and it does look awesome in monoposto !
It's gotten traction after the initial years of pure Ducatisti flame. The bike, especially in person, looks awesome and most camera shots dont really do it justice. It's also got a ton of unique features that makes it stand out and not belong to any specific period in bike design. Originally it was actually designed with a single sided swingarm and some other changes in the front, but these were changed by Ducati engineers/marketing people who wanted to cut some costs and primarily focus on the performance level alone, and then it was changed to a normal swingarm for production. Too bad (even though I still find it to be good looking).
It’s only a lot of maintenance if you do it all. I changed belts at 8k they looked like new, so then I changed belts at 30k they looked like new. If you ride the bike vs letting it sit in the garage the belts don’t stiffen up and if you aren’t hitting the rev limiter on it every 10 seconds you can easily halve the maintenance “requirements”. So at 33,000 miles, I’ve changed the belts twice, one set of fork seals, one starter clutch (a known defect on the 1098), one set of spark plugs, two rear blinkers (rubber stalks eventually break down and snap off), one headlight bulb, one radiator, one chain and sprocket set along with many sets of break pads and a pile of tires. So for 14 years and 33K that’s less than $5000 for the hard bits. I think that’s pretty reasonable and it still runs like a scalded dog.
I think the next generation in that model range was the peak of the analog superbike. But I'm probably biased because I own one: a 2010 1198 S Corse SE. It's a claimed 370 lbs dry with 170 HP and 97 lb-ft, and it's wrapped in one of the most beautiful liveries that Ducati has ever released.
i still think the standard 1198s is still more raw in my oppinion the 1198 corse is ducati kind of dipping into the electronic world while the 1198s is raw
I bought a base 2007 model when it was first released and had it for around 15K miles. Your review was spot on. Life was good and the motor ran cool enough when you were really ringing the hell out of the thing. A heavy clutch pull, fluffy sub 3K RPM, and stop & go traffic could make life miserable. Luckily, my home was nestled in a prime, back country riding location. The brakes were the absolute best that I have sampled over the last 33 years of sportbike riding. The plastic tank had recurring warping issues. Sadly, the aluminum tank, from the Ducati accessory catalog, went "obsolete " before I could order one. Still, she was a brute, and I'm glad I owned her for those 7 years...
God this makes me miss my old 07. I think I would actually enjoy it now more than I did then. Full Termi exaust, ceramic coated in and out, Factory race kit, custom levers, the obvious clutch kit with open cover. I WAS A GOD!
The 1098 was the first sport bike I’ve ever ridden coming off of dual sports and dirt bikes.. the whole experience was pretty awesome that twin is unreal so much torque
I had a last model 1198,it had traction control but even taking belt changes and desmo servicing into account, these bikes are truly worth it,awesome, alive, raw and visceral, you get what you pay for and other than servicing I never had any problems.✌👍
@@hectichive889 they're not so bad, timing belt change every other year, dry clutches can wear fast if abused but other than that they're okay,if you want a hard edged, raw, unyielding thoroughbred motorcycle then this is the bike, worth every penny, utterly awesome, but if you want a bike to ride steady or pootle about on then a horrible bike to ride, very uncompromising but 100% Italian passion.👍✌
I was looking at these recently as well as they are within my price range. Expensive insurance however, but hey it's a nice 2nd bike. The 848 was my dream bike 12 years ago.
Bought my '08 1098 new and still have it, still love it! New engine is being built now, 26k miles before the piston skirt broke off. Better, faster, still in love with it.
Buddy of mine has this in red, takes it out when he wants to bed a new girl on the first date. Never fails. That in itself is a feature worth mentioning.
I had an 848, and the ergonomics we're fantastic for the superbike. I miss it, yet I kind of want a 1098 in it's place. I have a ratted out 748 now and the level of comfort is worlds apart. Trying to get it back to OEM spec. This video had the most fascinating fact I've ever heard on the channel.
i rather see a R1 when they first add crossplane to it. damn they were looking good! :p Pipes under the seat always looked better on those. Shame weight cut and style evolved otherwise. And still, todays bike are heavier ^^'
I still have my yellow 2007 1098 base. She has 48,000 miles on her and other than the need to upgrade the battery and charging system. She’s a beast with TOCE exhaust and BST carbon fiber wheels you can steer her with your feet!
Fun fact: The designer of the 999 - Piere Terblanche - actually designed the 999 with a single sided swingarm and many other alterations, but he was overruled by Ducati higher-ups who saw it easier to get the same performance at a cheaper cost/manufacturing. Almost all the negative parts that Ducatisti complained about, were things that were changed by engineers and marketing people, not the actual Ducati designers themselves. Sadge
These were the last of the booming L-twins Ducati made, with a rad note from good pipes. The later L-twins got to be pretty soft on the exhaust note and required a lot of revs to develop power.
The 1098 is an amazing bike and the 999 might be funky looking, but it's by far the most comfortable Ducati sport bike ever built. You guys need to put Spite on one. You forget what they look like when you ride them because they ride amazing.
I remember the video in which you introduced this bike ( around the time you introduced the R7 ) and I am feeling kind of sad that it's on its way out, it has been the star of many great videos.
I saw an 05 Ducati 999 with 4,000 miles and all the upgrades for sale on cycle trader for $4,999 but it sold right away. The exhaust clutch wheels and carbon work were worth all of 5 grand I just wish I could have pulled the trigger on it
You see for me i first wanted nothing but cars then i started learning step by step about motorcycles and then later about different models, personally I'd want in my garage is 1098,v2, and to me they're dream bikes
The ultimate analog bike is the first crossplane R1, 09-10. 190 horses, handles, brakes and is very reliable. Yes, I'm biased, I own an 09 and love it. It's a bit on the hefty side but I'm a bigger dude.
