I have found one benefit of the rivian frunk is I can have it loaded with offroad recovery gear (a 48" hi-lift even fits!) and a bunch of loose items like boots (with kids we always have lots of extra things to take) and i don't need to worry about things tumbling out the front. I can pack it flush to the top and I know the hood will close.
That's something these guys are not thinking about. When you load up those other truck frunks too much, a ton falls out when you open them. Not on the Rivian.
I think automakers are missing the mark. Someone should make an electric pickup the size of the ford maverick with around 400 miles of range. They wouldn’t be able to build enough of them.
IMHO new trucks are going soft, I have a 2002 Silverado 1500. I love my truck, it's fairly efficient, very comfortable. It never had any warranty issues, has never let me down, and is tons of fun to drive. Plus no payments. I'm getting ready to put in a new GM 6.0 crate upgrade and a gearstar tranny. It will be my last 1/2 ton pickup.
Don't even have to watch 3 mins of the video to know that the Rivian is more expensive. Personally, I would just wait for the Scout with the ICE Range Extender.
What I meant, is 10% of the tow rating that I normally put on my hitch top load leaves you with only 317 lbs to use. That's basically me and my lunch. No room for tools, crew member or really anything. I will need a slimmed iphone...
The commentary at the beginning of the video is off-base. This is how cars have been done for a long time. I'm still on the fence about BEVs, especially trucks because I live in a cold and snowy climate (MN) where it can be weeks on end below 0. Also concerning is how do these heavy beasts perform in the snow? Do they cut power if you're stuck? I'm not going to buy one just to find that out. I prefer the Silverado EV. It's a really good looking truck. I'd love to see what a Silverado EV Trailboss looks like! In a few years, I think there'll be a truck which I'd take over both of these: the Scout Terra. What a terrific dichotomy, old school looks and toughness meets modern tech. THAT is a truck I am truly excited for.
I've been impressed with our R1S in the snow in the mountains so far. The power delivery is incredibly smooth and it doesn't need to 'cut' power like a gas vehicle; it can very quickly adjust the power output. We visited family in MN at Thanksgiving and it was 3 degrees when we left; it's so nice to just precondition from the app so it's warmed up when needed!
I’m in Northern WI and have an Ext Range Lightning. Range went down some in sub-zero but hasn’t affected my day to day use. I also recently did a several hundred mile trip that started on -12F and no problems. Did two stops for bladder release and did a short partial charge at one of them while I had lunch. Since freezing weather came I’m good every day with my overnight charge. Haven’t had too much deep snow but not sure why that would be an issue anymore than any other 4x4. It weighs the same as the Ram 2500 I had before but the weight is balanced so there’s no rear end fish tail on icy take offs
Rivian is really lacking the AC power outboard. They don't even offer a nema 5-20 plug with 120 volt 20 amp plugs and zero 240 volt plugs. Rivian needs to update all 120 plugs to 20 amps and install a nema 14-50 that can pull the full 50 amps for an hour or two. This way, you could use a 240-volt EVSE at 48 amps and put out 11.5 kws to allow a quick "gas can" type fill-up for so one that runs out of power. It would also be great for V to L or V to everything. The onboard power is a great feature for boondocking powering your RV or camp site without running a generator. 😊
Love my LT without all the adds that you show on this truck. MSRP $75K and purchased for $66.3K with tax incentive now $59K and had them include the hard cover Tonneau cover in the purchase price. Never used the Apple Car play so not missed. It feels better quality construction than Tesla inside. We have had and still have Teslas since 2019 (Model S, X, 3s.). U/I not quite as good as Tesla, but NOT as bad as I was thinking. To me the U/I works pretty well. A few glitchy things, but have figured them out. Love that I can set up both my garage doors with out having to pay for it like Tesla charges. The garage door icons also shows up when I get close to the house. Like that it shows it is charging and a charge status bar when charging within the front lights. Appreciate the true mileage number versus Tesla. We still have our Tesla's, so not bashing, just sharing the differences that I like. My towing is rated on the door at 12,500 lbs and 1750 in the bed. Regular LT range is 408 with 18" wheels, but I have gotten 423 miles. I am an EV enthusiast and will not go back. I prefer the Chevy EV all day long over Rivian. It looks way better and more like a big truck.
I think the R1T best deal is the dual motor max pack. The dual motor also has a higher payload. I’d probably add the performance package. Really though, I want the Silverado. The only thing I don’t like is the slanty Avalanche-like front top of the bed. It makes it hard to put up a camper shell.
Bummed i missed it live. Towing in my SUV right now my 2016 175 LHS Keystone, I only want to go about 200-300 miles in a day then setup camp. So at 200 towing range on the chevy, I am really just stuck saving up money or waiting for used one to jump on one!
So with the Rivian dual motor, what are the payload and towing ? I prefer the smaller size to get in my garage, but find the Chevy to be very attractive. Also prefer the nicer interior and handling of the Rivian. I'd like a frunk like the Chevy.
The fronk lift over height is so much more because its rated to ford over 40 inches of water. If it opened like the Chevy, it would not be able to handle as deep water fording.
It's funny when talking about range anxiety. Back in the day, I had a Nissan Leaf which would get about 50-80 miles depending on the outside temperature. That was range anxiety! If you spent $70K you could get a Tesla Model S for about 220 miles of range. No range anxiety there right?!
Silverado ✔️, more room in back seat for my large dogs. If the glass is an option, then I will be saving money not having that, as my pack doesn't need that. Definitely want the rear steering. Only thing GM hasn't thought of is Dog mode that is in the Rivian, but at least there is a way to keep the Silverado truck on when I leave the pack inside. No one will try to get in with my protective pack inside.
Tesla is making profits on EVs. They are the only one. Rivian is losing $39,000 per car sold based on the DIRECT cost of the car. However, if you include the other cost of running the company, for example, research and development, paying utilities, other non assembly line workers etc then they are losing $110,000 per vehicle.
@ not sure that is the case for Tesla. How much “profit” comes from selling credits to other manufacturers? It’s this kind of financial sleight of hand that is going to wreck the auto industry…..
That's really not true. You have to understand how capital costs impact P & L sheets. All mfg companies, Tesla was no exception, have high capital costs early in their lives that they must endure so the first few years of any new venture will reflect high levels of loss before the profits start showing up.
i can't get over the fact that the silverado EV and its related models are 9,000 pounds. there are bridges in some parts of the country that won't support that weight. I almost think people should have a CDL to drive them
The Silverado is by far the better value along with the better Frunk and much better AC power and range. You would need the 19.2 kw EVSE for home charging. Rivian is only 11.5 AC charging.
Biggest killer right now is the price. Other than the Lightning, these trucks start at like $80k. Past the initial people that really want it, that’s a lot to spend on new tech that may or may not work for you.
You guys like to tow long range and use a truck like a truck. We have already seen you use a Rivian. The Silverado EV would be great to see and test. The only issue will be any off roading I believe.
If you want to tow on road trips, pick the Chevy. If you want to be cool, buy the Rivian. The front trunk on the Rivian is consistent with the off-roading orientation of the vehicle, which is spec'd to wade three feet of water. Not so much with the Chevy.
Both trucks don’t make any practical sense. I much prefer BYD Shark’s design, which has a battery and an ICE generator engine. It is an electric truck without the constraints of an electric truck. Runs on gas whenever there is no electric charge and can tow long range like a normal truck.
I’ve come to realize that if I was wealthy or as a 2nd or 3rd vehicle, an EV is an option - but for mere mortals 😖 Between the 2 EV trucks in question, I like the Have New Year TFL! HAPPY, HEALTHY, PROSPEROUS 2025! 🤩🥳😎
All current electric trucks are too big and too heavy. Car manufacturers took the existing truck platform that was designed for internal combustion engines and put huge batteries in them. The large size and heavy weight of modern electric trucks make them inefficient. Telo addressed these problems by designing a new platform for a compact truck to reduce size/weight and maximize efficiency. Late in 2025, the first Telo trucks will be delivered to customers. The compact Telo truck will have a base curb weight of 4400 lbs, GVWR over 6000 lbs, 1600 lbs of payload (Rivian 1540 lbs and Silverado EV 1500 lbs of payload), and 6600 lbs of towing capacity. The Telo is 152 inches long, an 8 ft bed with the mid gate down, and 10 inches of ground clearance on 215/65R16 All Terrain tires. Telo comes with 500 horsepower 2WD or all wheel drive, 106 Kilowatt hour battery with a maximum of 350 miles of range (Rivian 360-400 and Silverado EV 390-408 miles of range). Instead of trying to maneuver an electric truck the size of a 1/2 ton into narrow city parking spots, I would prefer a compact truck the size of a 2-door Mini Cooper.
"Car manufacturers took the existing truck platform that was designed for internal combustion engines and put huge batteries in them" No that's not what GM, Tesla or Rivian did. The F150 Lightning is the only one that is based on a ICE chassis. Also, I will believe the Telo exists when I see them in the hands of customers with all of the specs you claim. We've been here before and the outrageous claims rarely seem to pan out.
@Jay-me7gw You can say that the Cybertruck is a departure from the design of an internal combustion engine truck design. However, every electric truck that has a front engine compartment "frunk" is based on the internal combustion powered truck structure. The two original founders of Tesla are investors in Telo. So if they believe in it enough to put their own money into the project it must be on the right track. People have either forgotten or are too young to know that Elon Musk didn't create the Tesla car company and he didn't design the first Tesla car. Tesla founders Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning brought Elon Musk into the company.
@@aerynlovell4754the telo design is not a half ton competitor it’s more of a Ford Maverick class small truck. The whole point of the half ton form factor is to be large and heavy enough to tow and haul significant payloads. Even the F-150 has gotten too light for confident towing due to its aluminum body.
@Icayn The founders of Telo said that their truck will not compete with any existing truck. The Telo can carry more cargo than some 1/2 ton trucks, but its towing numbers are lower. The founders of Telo wanted a work truck that can easily park in crowded cities with the ability to go off-road for recreation. The Maverick is similar in size, but it's a hybrid. Engineering Explained had a video explaining how hybrids damage the internal combustion engine because the engines don't run long enough to get to operating temperature and burn off moisture (water) that gets into the oil. The Telo is electric to reduce size, weight, and complexity while maximizing efficiency. The problem with the aluminum truck bodies used by Ford is that they are prone to cracking. To fix cracked aluminum requires a skilled welder, and some bodyshops don't have the ability to properly repair aluminum body panels.
I think the space is a bit stagnant from the initial releases. The Rivian seems more interesting but as a viewer the form factor lacks 'change' enough to make it meaningful. The GM is the furthest from its real demographic.
If I HAD to buy an electric pickup (which I don't), I'd go with the GMC Sierra EV. That price though. 🤯 Between these two, I think the Chevy edges out the Rivian. Not a fan of the Rivian's interior. Good effort though, for such a new company. Speaking of small companies, the Scout looks pretty promising as well.
The big difference……..The Silverado will go 390 miles (meet the EPA range ) on the highway at 70 Mph. The Rivian will not meet its range on the highway…
You guys are crying about a piece of plastic when gm is trying to keep the cost down for you and yet you still want to complain gm isn't the only truck with plastic on it and inside it and you complain about seats but see who's seats last longer when you know the softer the foam is the faster it wears out. And the rivian is smaller and costs 20 thousand plus more. If they say four wheel drive on the truck it should have a proper four wheel drive system with 4hi and 4lo
If you asked me WHICH Electric Truck I Should Buy I'd answer the Chevy. But I'd have to use YOUR money because - while nice and cool - they are way too expensive for me.
The rivian is old already might be a new year but looks the same to most people and without even watching 10 minutes of this video we already know which one you will choose it will be the Chevy because it's new and people want to see new not old
Premium LT with sunroof or any other options won't qualify for ev tax credit because it goes over $80k. And a premium LT (with no other options) is impossible to find. It's like GM marketing just don't want customers who want something nicer to get EV credit.
Rivian has thermo management issues, phantom drain issues, and way too short a tow range. The Chevy is a more useful vehicle while Rivian has a great software interface.
@ Is it? Those issue have been improved, not eliminated. At least not the thermal issues. Haven’t seen any testing on phantom drain but I’m sure they didn’t eliminate that completely if they didn’t resolve the thermal issues completely. Ultium doesn’t have noticeable phantom drain in a 24 hour period by the way so it’s possible to almost completely eliminate.
Both of these should've had smaller batteries and ICE motors to extend range. Full EV won't work for anyone who actually uses their truck or drives long distance.
We take our Rivian with 350mi of range on 1500mi+ road trips all the time. You charge overnight at hotels, and time your stops with meals. That being said the Silverado would win out on road trips since you can charge up in 20min vs 30min in the Rivian.
Why? The new ramcharger is a useless very complicated thing that only accomplishes the range they could've done with the 3.6 if they could get the truck to hit 28mpg.
@@Kahless00 The ramcharger doesn't even exist yet so I think it's premature to call it useless. Look up the BYD Shark. A system like that would seriously eat into US truck sales if it were sold here. It's no more complex than today's hybrids which have already proven very reliable. EV torque coupled with gas range and ability to fuel up would be awesome.
Well, consumers have spoken; cybertruck outsold all of them combined! I test drove a CT, and decided to sell my R1T. CT doesn’t drive like a truck. It drives like a passenger car; smooth, nimble, fast, yet with truck versatility. R1T is a great truck, but it drives like a truck
I like them both, BUT I'm waiting for the Scout.
Same here! And hopefully solid state batteries

@@aerynlovell4754 I would agree the Telo is in its own class not relevant here
Spare tire on Chevy?
Nice Meta Ray Ban glasses!
Chevy EV-TRUCK ❤💯
I think the space is a bit stagnant from the initial releases. The Rivian seems more interesting but as a viewer the form factor lacks 'change' enough to make it meaningful. The GM is the furthest from its real demographic.
The GM is the only one that actually has a decent towing range.
If I HAD to buy an electric pickup (which I don't), I'd go with the GMC Sierra EV. That price though. 🤯
Between these two, I think the Chevy edges out the Rivian.
Pick the one Jen likes. That's what matters.
The Chevy does not look very aggressive in the front and resembles a Blazer.
Did you see your new RAM is about to take a 30-35% haircut in MSRP in 2025?
No we didn’t. Neither did you. Unsubscribe from TK garage and get back your sense of reality.
i drive a 2019 hd ram, i dont see any reason to replace it... the ev stuff is lame, ill wait for the 7.1 cummics
For Me none EV; gas power 💯
Silverado all the way.
Why would someone buy a not even a 1/2 ton truck that costs what a 3/4 ton diesel costs?
If Chevy made a Rivian-sized version of that Silverado, that would be cool.
As well as a much, much lower price...
S10 EV 😂
@mitchstein288 No. It would be more like a Colorado/Canyon EV...
KIA EV9 is always the answer
The Silverado looks more like a muscle car.
Rich people toys.
You just get so much more battery in the Silverado
Where is the f-150 ⚡️⚡️⚡️?
If I could afford one, it would be the Chevy. A better looking vehicle. Do not like the headlights on the Rivian
The rivian is old already might be a new year but looks the same to most people and without even watching 10 minutes of this video we already know which one you will choose it will be the Chevy because it's new and people want to see new not old
Ahh yes the Rachel Maddow glasses…..it’s a thing I hear. 😂. Wish I could afford either of these beasts
They took Apple CarPlay & AA out by design for their EV vehicles. Gas ones still have it.
Rvian Tri is more expensive in my estimation.
The Chevrolet Silverado is about $100000 the Rivian is less money this part of
Chevy would be my choice
Too much content on Rivian choose the Silverado EV!
The one that runs on gas
I personally can't afford either one... 😒
Neither can anyone else.
Same…
It’s Tiny!!
Just can’t get over those F- ing ugly headlights on the Rivian from day one I hated them 🤮
Sorry rivian,auto spell?
Both absurdly expensive. The average person can't afford these. Rivian isn't even making money. Unreal. $106,000? What a joke.
That’s not rhiptide blue!!
I’ll buy an RC truck for my son
Good for people that want EV trucks, but I still will take my Internal combustion engine, full size pick-up 4x4 V8 engine truck !!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💪💪🥊🥊
GM all day
Buy a Traxxis instead!
To much $$$ , like all trucks .
Neither buy a diesel
Neither. They cost way too much.
Lmao you can tow using super cruise
NONE
The Silverado EV LT is the real sweet-spot in that lineup. 408 miles and 300kW charging for $67k after rebate.
Your information is out of date.
Those look like something a high school girl would drive for her first car. Very emasculating. I wouldn’t be caught dead in either one of those.
Both of these should've had smaller batteries and ICE motors to extend range. Full EV won't work for anyone who actually uses their truck or drives long distance.
What happens when the battery runs out though? Do I refill my gas tank and get 100 miles of range if I don’t recharge my battery too?
We take our Rivian with 350mi of range on 1500mi+ road trips all the time. You charge overnight at hotels, and time your stops with meals. That being said the Silverado would win out on road trips since you can charge up in 20min vs 30min in the Rivian.
Why? The new ramcharger is a useless very complicated thing that only accomplishes the range they could've done with the 3.6 if they could get the truck to hit 28mpg.
@@jlaw1901 depends on the exact setup but yeah you could just fill with gas and go.
Chevy are still the undisputed king of ugly wheel design.
There’s a button on the front of the Rivian that allows you to open and close it… smh
