I bought this amp about a year ago and I couldn't be happier with it. I play a lot of metal through the amp's distortion no pedals and it hasn't failed me yet

      @@KrachWerke yeah, sure.
Basically unplugging reverb give you more punch and get similar raw punch to jcm900 which I have plugged in next to avt50. Make sure contacts are not touching and are insulated. Your reverb knob turns into Presents control, you then can adjust sort of midrange I believe. Cool mod, can be reversed of course in a matter of 2minutes really if you don't like it. I keep back cab open cause I prefer open back sound. Hope that helps.

Dude. That noise in your overdrive. … that’s gotta be your outlets , or a grounding issue, Maybe your pickups ,, maybe you got to so much gear running on one outlet. Idk. But I love this amp

    • @KrachWerke

My complaint is not the hiss and hum (that is from my overworked testbed pedalboard), it was the distortion character. But then again that is a taste thing. Too much top end fizz for my liking. I have noticed that with the right mic and cranking the amp that starts to sound a lot better for my taste.

I agree that this amp could be tweaked to achieve a more pleasant sound but I do not agree with the general complaints found on the web.
The sound character of any amp depends on 3 main subsystems: the preamp, the Power amp and the speaker.
On the the AVT50 the preamp Is based on a single dual triode Ecc83 tube with tone controls on any channel. The design is quite simple and standard for this class of amp so the only improvement area Is the replacement of the tube with a compatibile one (we can try a lower gain device to fix the harshness of the stock Marshall tube).
The Power amp is a monolithic IC based on DMOS Power transistor: the TDA7293 made by ST Microelectronics. It is a general purpose 100 W Power amp for Hi-Fi applications so, unless driven to extreme saturation (where it has a 10 %THD ) which is not the case with the AVT50 , it does not add colour to the sound.
The speaker could be pleasant or not but using an external cab or replacing the speaker is an easy fix.
A test I suggest is using another amp we appreciate, provided with a send-return, and separatedly check the preamp of one with the poweramp of the other, driving the send output of the first the return input of the second. And viceversa in the second test. Please remember to zero the gain and volume of the unused preamp to avoid possibile noise.
At the end one should sort out what is not fully satisfactory with the AVT50 which has great tone and potentialities to my taste.

I bought this amp in like 2002 …. Maybe my ears are shit but I love this amp. The distortion sounds great to me. If you eq it right. Shiiiit , I was about to buy another one because I can’t find that sound on any of the newer amps.. I just want a good metal distortion , for under $500.

Proper doom machine. With the right guitar and the right low tuning it can create very good doom, stoner and sludge sounds. I think it goes to the Matamp territory.

So this amp is going into the practce room soom and we are doing more doomy tones. I am very keen to push this idea with this amp.

It's not the amp. Mine had the same problem. I was about to blow it out cheap but i decided to try some tests. That horrible fizz. The problem is 2 fold. it's the tube and the speaker. ESPECIALLY the speaker. I changed the tube on mine to a jj extra hot, and play it through a Harley Benton 2x12 vertical vintage 30 cab. Now it sounds almost as good as my DSL50 Head. You can get a brand new Harley Benton vintage 30 Cab, shipped, for less than the cost of the Vintage 30 speakers alone.

I had the head version and into my 1960a with T75s it sounded great. I only sold it because it was not quite loud enough compared to my Lead 100 Mosfet.
It definitely got fizzy real fast on the gain channel. I usually kept my gain at around 4 (11 oclock) and would just slam it with an HM2. It did the thing.

  • @csh9853

yes they all have some fizz in overdive but a noise reducer pedal will help with that. a eq pedal in the effects loop will help with the mids.

My first amp ever. Kinda sentimental. Kinda turned off by that ugly G12 t75 speaker's midrange. But with Behringer V-amp pro it worked like a charm back in the day. Even Peavey valveking couldn't keep up (so muddy). Good old days. Cool for recording metal. Not enough natural gain for live rehearsals. But like I said. Amp hi gain sims helped a lot or line6 uber metal pedal gave it a second life

Then try this, turn up your amp, mute the strings on your guitar, then point your guitar at the fridge or your computer. You'll probably hear 60/50 hz buzzing or computer switching noises with any amp you have. These noises are from your guitar pick ups picking up those noises. Just turn away or move away from those noise sources and you'll hear less noise. @@KrachWerke

Either you got a dud or you're deaf, this is one of the best Valve combos for money till this day. Blows the rest out of the park... Replace the tube or take it to a tech because your OD channel did sound shit and the EQ also didn't seem to be working properly. I also have the AVT100 which I've found handles the gain channels even better, I have yet to get a better Tube High gain tone from a combo. I use it as my portable amp and it can play every Genre. Not once did you dial in a good Overdriven Channel let alone a High gain one. Anyone reading this interested in actually hearing some tones of the likes of Van Halen, Metallica, AC/DC, Etc feel free to reply and I'll give you details to receive a video. This review was very Bad.
