Lyrics:
Cab fare to nowhere
Is what you are
A white line to an exit sign
Is what you are
All that I saw in you
Now I see through
Don't shed a tear for me
My life won't end without you
(Without you)
Long as the night will be
The sun will rise without you
A locked door on a candy store
Is what you are
(Is what you are)
A slim chance in tight pants
Is what you are
All that I loved you for
I want it more
Don't shed a tear for me
My life won't end without you
(Without you)
Long as the night will be
The sun will rise without you
You ain't givin'
Well, I'm not takin'
I'm not missin'
What we ain't makin'
All that I saw in you
Now I see through
Don't shed a tear for me
My life won't end without you
(Without you)
Long as the night will be
The sun will rise without you
Don't shed a tear for me
My life won't end without you
(Without you)
Long as the night will be
The sun will rise without you
I won't, don't shed no tears
I won't need, I don't need
I don't need
Oh, please

For those that don't know Paul Carrack is the lead vocalist for the 1975 hit song "How Long" by Ace, the lead vocalist on the 1981 song "Tempted" by Squeeze AND the 1985 hit by Mike + the Mechanics, "Silent Running"!
Wow thanks! I had no idea!!
Yes I know that! A great singer!
He also sings The living years, one of my favorite song ever.
He is so talented!
Yep. I knew. His voice is awesome!
Paul Carrack is one of the most underappreciated, overlooked singers in music!
Lol
True fucking story
He is....such an amazing and unique voice. Very talented guy.
Still love this song miss the 80s
Subestimado?😳
Such an underrated 80's gem! One of my all time favorites! ❤
One of the most beautiful models! 😍🥰
The decade of No autotune and excellent storytelling in video and lyrics!
Miss this one!!!!
What about the 1850's?
Absolutely...I miss that
@@complexrolls that was the decade before the Civil War when the Dredd Scott decision was handed down by the Supreme Court. It said that a slave could not be a citizen of the U.S. and was one of the causes of the Civil War. Just sayin'.
Is likely a drum machine though.
1987 was the best year of my life and I was only 15 years old! This song takes me right back to October 1987, when it hit the airwaves on MTV. My teenage years had the greatest of soundtracks.
Yes! MTV played music
I graduated in 87…would love to visit back there🥰
I was 3 when this came out. I didn’t have the privilege of watching this on MTV but it popular on the radio until the mid 90s.
@maga maga
I was 10 years old in Oct. 1987, and remember hearing this song on the radio a lot at that time and quite a bit in the next few years as well. It's a great song!!! It's Still one of my favorites, even all these years later!!! 😁
i was 10 in 87 and it was the best yr of my life too--bc of the albums my brothers dubbed for me. it wasinsane. and i had seen Paul with the me hanics in 85. i was spoiled lol 1987 4-ever! joshua tree, rush hold your fire, depeche music for the masses, the cure-kiss me kiss me kiss me, the smiths-strangeways here we come, belinda heaven is a place on earth 😍😍, even though peter gabriel-so and crowded house both technically came out in 86, i didn't have them til 87 so i am putting them here too. sting-nothing like the sun, inxs kick was recorded in 87 but released in 88 so I'm adding that too. the list goes on and on, like the triumph song that came out the next year lol
"My life won't end without you (Without you) Long as the night will be The sun will rise without you" . That little paragraph has helped me countless times in my life. I love this song for that.
You have been USED, honey.
@Fornax2008
I agree completely!! A great thought in a terrific song!!!
This and Button Off My Shirt by Ronnie Milsap.
Both wonderful "screw you" songs!
@@rachela.wayment5567 AWESOME
Good for you !FORNAX2008 !I haven't been so lucky !but i still get up by myself ! that's all i need ! Cheers !
Love his voice! I would listen to him singing a Chinese restaurant menu.
"Doooon't get the Egg Fu Yung,
My cousin died, eating that (eating that)
Stiiiick with the egg drop soup
It's pretty good, yes it is!"
Absolutely mind blown that he has sung for Mike and the Mechanics, Ace, Squeeze, etc and still did not recognize his name. Very nice voice.
I just found all that out a couple years ago. He's one of my favorite singers now!
This song is truly timeless and Paul's voice is phenomenal.
They don't make them like this anymore
Hey you just said this 15 hours ago!
I believe the 80s music was great music. I listen to it often. Just a simple opinion.
💯 Totally agree. Best era out!. Bring back the 80s and everything else about it. 🎉
“Slim chance in tights pants is what you are” classic line
i knew a few of them back in the day
He could never get away with that line today.
Man I miss the 80's . . .
That man can sing his ass off!! Lord we 80s kids had it great 😊
This guy should be in the HOF!
Call me crazy but I would love to see Paul Carrack and Steve Winwood tour together
They actually remind me of each other. Similar in music styles/genre, career paths.
Oh what a great idea that would be a great show!!
You’re not crazy
No that's not crazy, that's a great idea
add Bruce Hornsby and that would jam
The 80's had such beautiful women !!
Yep.
I must admit...I was then too...lol. Be safe all !!
This man creepin
The hair and the make up were so much better. And the clothes rocked. My wife was one of those biiiiig hair, mini skirt and high heel beauties. She still is. Except the hair. Good times.
No disagreement here.
You hear so many songs about not being able to go on without another person. Or that life means nothing without your old significant other. Rarely do we hear songs where we will be much better off without someone and still find happiness without needing someone.
There's a ton of them today, mostly by women.
Was in London for work and happened to notice Mr Carrack was playing at a small venue. Around 1,000 people. Was epic…❤
Were you "Tempted" to ask him "How Long" he's been performing there?
A top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1988 from his third SOLO album "One Good Reason". He would have a #1 hit just a year later with Mike & The Mechanics with "The Living Years".
I can go through 100 80s songs and know nothing about them but I remember them anyway
Dear God in heaven thank u for music during break ups!!!
Really underrated song.
This came out when I was in high school. It quickly became one of my favorite driving tunes. Still is!
4th grade n still remember this song vividly we share name!! Paul rules!!
Mine too!
Same!
I'm an 80s girl, multiple songs from Paul Carrack were so enjoyable then and still are.
I'm adding this song to my performance repertoire
I agree, it's the perfect driving song,
Man the CVS in Palms just hit me with this and it blossomed again like a desert flower that only shows up every 40 yrs
Love when that happens. I heard "Overkill" by Men At Work in Red Lobster a few months ago.
Ah, takes me back to high school in the 80s when I never turned off the radio. Love his voice. So distinctive that the first tine I heard this song I thought…” isn’t this the ‘How Long’ guy?”
Nuh-uh.
Paul is a good all around musician
This man is a legend
Paul Carrick is one of the funkiest singers that come out of England... He just has an amazingly soulful voice.
And as an American producer - can you tell you of a certainty very few voices can be used in all styles of music, his is a unique quality where you could take his voice and superimpose it over it's about any genre music and it just works....
What about rap?
In 1987, I was a 17 year old man, working my first year in a metal industry factory in North Fitzroy, here in Melbourne, Australia, when this first played on Radio.
Heard it again on Radio in Sydney, when on Summer Holidays there. And I know why this song rated so highly, especially here in Australia, at the time: the great antidote soundtrack for those who'd ever lost out in love. Bought the album on cassette in 1988, still have it today in 2022. Great song back then and still just as great these years later.
You're not a man at 17.
A locked door at a candy store ,is what u are. Unbelievably creative🎉
Still love it... never gets old
He was in a lot of great groups. Such a great voice.
Ace
Squeeze
Mike and the Mechanics
Just to name a few
The golden voice
He made the groups great! ;)
@@Dreamstalker8002 Those were the only three, lol. Notice how each band name got longer as he went along? He probably has OCD. That's a sign of it. Joining bands with longer and longer names as you go along.
You don't know what you're talking about. @@James-if3kc
This video in 1987/1988 got heavy rotation on MTV and it is burned into my soul.
Thank you Paul!
I accidentally came across this song! I haven’t heard this in years. Man, the memories!
Since "How Long"....I fell in love with HIS VOICE, truly talented. I love his music ❤LOVE YOU PAUL!!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰
No auto tune here babe🎉😊
HELL yeah!!!!!!! LOVE this one from yesteryear!!!!
Love this song, I think this song doesn't get enough attention when it comes to 80's music and it's one of those songs I always love hearing popped up on my iPod
Awesome song n one of best voices of all time!! He can sing!! Hit those high notes!!
This song peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1988
I remember it like yesterday. A fantastic time to be a teenager in America.
It should have hit number 1.
@@GhausterThe Living Years went to #1
Yes, I greatly remember that moment like it was yesterday along with the very first time I heard this song on Philadelphia's 93.3 WMMR-FM.
This took me four hours in my brain to remember 😢
One of the most underrated singers in music history. One of my favorite singers and this song is great!
My love for this song will never fade, especially the drumbeat!
The drums do indeed carry the song. This is common with a lot of '80s songs.
Haven't thought about this song in years... Heard his name and had to come hear it again
So underrated, sensational voice and talent Paul Carrack. Shame in Australia I’m so far away to see him perform
Saw him in November 2019 in Dublin Excalibur
F**k'n absolutely F**k'n Deadly
Happy New Year
Best wishes

Love this song from the past. I was a teen of the 80's. I can play this song on constant replay and never get tired of it and this is the only song I love by him in his solo career.
I liked Paul as the lead singer of Mike & The Mechanics and he had a good solo career as well, this is my favorite song by him!
Logro desbloqueado! Gracias
I remember this song when I was in junior high school. Love the sound of the synthesizers in the song.
This song helped me get through a rough break up
❤❤❤it is like an Anthem song....for those who will make it regardless
Just heard this at the food lion supermarket.. The nostalgia hit me hard...
Same. It was playing at my doctor's office. Now I'm here
If you don't know P Carrick you don't know music 🎵
Apparently you don't know how to spell his name.
Great sing... very underrated vocalist. I remember this era about him looking very much like Phil Collins though
I love this model! ❤
Such an uplifting song in a time of depressing poor me songs
I’m guessing that the song was the letting out of emotions after a relationship failure which could have been therapeutic.
@@MustangsTrainsMowers He's a songwriter, it's his job to write songs. Doesn't mean any of them are true.
Paul is an amazing singer. One of the greatest! Fabulous musician/songwriter too! I saw him with Ringo’s All Star Band in the 90’s. He did a few of his songs including Tempted! It was fuckin awesome ✌️❤️😎
2024 and still have this as one of my all time favorite songs.
I like this song! I love 80's music! That's what I call real music!...
Love this song❤❤❤
He is so talented.. somehow he slipped under the radar too so many but not me .. one of my favs!!
He was fantastic and I like his songs and also with Mike and The Mechanics. He does look a lot like Phil Collins.
Great song. Very underrated. Beautiful woman 😍 and great old classic car 🚘!
Always loved your voice and singing style Paul! You'reamongst the best!
Lyrical genius, emotional insights in the lyrics are awesome, harmonies, edgy guitar...continue to love this song...makes me feel stronger and better!
I feel the same way about this one!! Rock on girl!!
Same, catchy song, meaningful lyrics, underrated artist!

Absolutely love this song
That was incredible; not sure i realized until now.
I have a lot of emotional connection to this song... 1987. Good memories although it didn't work out the way I wanted.
Love this song, such a visceral feeling tune
Good description 💕
That what happens when you have feeling and soul in your work.
Not everyone gets a few hits, even less get an absolute BANGER like this
Such a talented man..!
This guys voice is unreal, he could
Sing the phone book.
Anybody could.
I wore this cassette out. Music can be amazing when you don't care what the singer looks like.
I haven’t heard that song in years. I still love it!
Excellent song
DON'T SHED A TEAR FOR ME IS MY FAVORITE PAUL CARRACK
Amazing voice..................
I can feel the soul in this one! I loved this one when I was a little kid.
I first recognized the voice in the '70s when he was with the band called Ace. A decade later you showed up on squeeze singing tempted. And here you are now singing don't shed a tear. All his songs have a catchy hook and great lyrics. A fantastic sultry voice that is definitely recognizable. Whether it's upfront or in the background it's definitely Paul Carrick. Outstanding singer and songwriter
great song
The guitar lick and opening keyboards and even some of the vocal melody popped into my head earlier and I was surprised that I couldn't remember the name or the artist. I've been trying to figure it out for the last couple of hours heh. First I was thinking Robbie somebody. Then for some reason I was thinking Paul Young but I watched his videos and nah. I was thinking Mike and the Mechanics but that didn't seem quite right. I finally wiki'd Mike and the Mechanics and there was the name Paul Young but he's a different Paul Young (RIP). Then I saw the name Paul Carrack! Found it! Such a good song. My memory is getting weak.
The first .26 seconds is my ring tone. God i love this crank
That car is a 72 Pontiac Grand Ville,,,,,, man what a vessel it is! l hope it is still rolling around the place, it must be collectable by now. Great song Paul and cute girl,,,,,, it would be cheaper to feed that small ship though!
Great beat. Hopevwill get a million views...
😊
This whole album is awesome.
A tip of the hat to whoever it was that played the drums on this track. Amazing talent.
It was a drum machine.
I still LOVE this song, best pick me up, after a breakup.❤
My eyes open each morning.
Heard this song and Shazamed and liked it instantly!
Great riff this song puts me in a great mood gen x was great ride
this song is so effing good !&&!
In the living years was pretty good to.
Great song that hardly gets played on the radio anymore.
Time machine Please take me back to the 80's when the music and movies and the world was a fun Place. The world has sucked the last 2 decades.
Oof, I was 14, freshman in highscool, just made cheerleader and life was sooo exciting. Would do anything to go back.....❤
I bet you were a h 0...
It's been a long time since I've heard this song. Nice memory.
Song is a banger 🎸🎹
Paul Carrack looks like Phil Collins in this video: the hair and facial expressions. Huge fan of both!
Funny thing about your comment - I thought the same thing.
❤ You Paul,Grew Up With You,on Mah Radios Life!SoundTrack!Take Care Allways!You R da CooLesT!Dont cha 4 get dat,nah!Is What you R!
When I was a little kid growing up in the 80s, I thought Paul Carrack and Phil Collins were the same person.
I have always loved this song growing up n the 80s era, but I never knew who sung it until now…thank-u-You-tube.❤❤❤
Still on my Playlist
