The Nicoya Peninsula is not nearly as developed as the majority of Costa Rica. We'll talk about the pros and cons of living on the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica.
Keep in mind...that you will find more ex-pats and some ex-pat communities along the coast, but not likely that you will meet or see many Gringos in the mountains of the Nicoya Peninsula.

Great show. Thank you. Nicola is a blue zone. Also the elevation is high in some places like Montezuma.
You are right! It's a nice place....and not too many tourist or gringos.
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Was in samara 2018 for studying spanish. Travelled to San Isidro on the weekend, was adventurous as we didn't have a 4 wheel... gosh...loved the country and the ticos!

I have a house in between PlayaTambor and Cobano. It is not flat, more like rolling ranch land. We are 15 minute drive to Gulf or Pacific ocean. Best of both worlds. When the hiway opens up between Nicoya and Pacera, it will be a quick 3 hour drive to Liberia.
Thanks Doug for your input...I know what you mean...and Love those rolling hills. However, it is not mountainous like most of Costa Rica..but that is a good thing and easy for building and much more. But, if you want the cool temps of the mountains...it is much flatter than most of Costa Rica. But yeah, you are right...love those rolling hills.
one small correction, San Jose is not 3 hours away from Nicoya, more like 6.
Thanks for your correction
Great info ! We want to live in the mountains and thought Nicoya would of been an option but I guess it’s not as Mountainous as we thought
Hey Yaniree, it is pretty there, but the mountains are NOT very high. It was a bit warm during some parts of the day.
When you do find something you think will be a good piece of property to buy....You most definitely want to spend a few days in the area and get a feel. Find out Exactly what the altitude is...
We'll do a video soon, giving tips on what to look for before buying a piece of property.

So Nicoya Peninsula further down is actually less expensive to purchase homes than the Jaco/Hermosa area?
Prices range a LOT in Costa Rica, however, because Nicoya is NOT nearly as touristy, in my opinion, you MIGHT be able to find some good deals there. However, you can find some amazing deals all over Costa Rica because EVERYTHING is for sale. It is a buyer's market.
Trying to get my subscribe to stick. Thumbs up, Commenting, and Watching!
Hope you figured it out. Enjoy
I am aware of a popular tennis facility in Nosara. I understand there are also many clubs (some associated with golf courses) in and around the San Jose area. Do you have a specific knowledge of active tennis clubs in various areas of Costa Rica. Any information would be appreciated. For us, its not about the cost of living, but rather the lifestyle of the country.
Hi David....we have been to so many places in Costa Rica...HOWEVER, for Tennis or Golf...I THINK (I could be wrong) the only place you'll find active Tennis Clubs will be near San Jose or in the VERY POPULAR Gringo area between San Jose and Liberia. The rest of Costa Rica...just does NOT have enough Gringos to support a Tennis or Golf club. Unfortunately...the most popular and ONLY sport MOST Ticos participate in is....Soccer (football as they call it.) I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Just an FYI, if you want to see the elevations on a map, I use MapCarta. Check it out, not as much money spent on this compared to google-earth, but it has different towns shown (?) and you may feel like it is donation-worthy. Good luck to all! Specifically if you're looking for non-4WD driving to get home/ Steepness or want to know how high/altitude for temperatures...
Thanks for sharing that info. That’s worth checking out.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
What would be a safe area that is a solid community for schools for my 3 children ages 4,8 and 11. Also as adults possibly moving for a 1st time in Costa rica and not spanish speaking looking for an area that is not a huge tourist area but still not far from an area of things to do.
I would suggest anything in the Perez Zeledon area. Watch this video:
th-cam.com/video/hcfeyFzHoIY/w-d-xo.html
I can't say a much about ENGLISH speaking schools, but this area would have plenty of schools for your children and if you didn't want them going to Spanish schools, you could look at Online Schooling for them. However, I think it would be good for them to get plugged into the Local schools.
You could have all the comforts needed for children, living and NOT be around LOTS of tourist.
I think you’re right about Nicoya, when I went there I saw a ton of Americans
Depending on what part you are in....(northern part near Tamarindo) Yes, you'll see a lot of Gringso.
Hi! thank you for the video, great information. I'm trying to narrow my choices would like to buy land and build my own house because I have yet to find a house that I really like in the location I would like, basically I'm looking for the "perfect" paradise ( I most likely won't find it, haha), however I'm willing to compromise, I'm looking for ocean view and forest view, cool temperatures, close to a small town and definitely not more than 1:30 hrs from airport. I have been looking at San Ramon in the Alajuela area, in your experience would this town kind of fit my search?? I have looked at San Isidro in the Perez Zeledon are also, loved the thick vegetation but seems 3 hrs from the airport?? Thank you in advance for your time.
Momma Bear....unfortunately, I have not had the experience of living within 1.5 hours of the Airport or any of the areas near San Jose or Alajuela. The closest we've been is near Jaco and there are some places (mountains) near Jaco that might fit your requirements.
If I were you...I really think you would be much happier in the Perez Zeledon region. The disadvantage for you is YES, you would be 3 to 3.5 hours from the airport. 3 hours or less, IF you sacrifice the Ocean Views. 3.5 hours if you MUST have ocean views and chose to live in the mountains just below Tinamaste. There...are plenty of places below Tinamaste that fits your requirements and being within 45 min of San Isidro would allow you to buy anything you need. Just my two cents. Sorry I couldn't help you more with the area you inquired about.
@@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica Thank you so much for your input!
@@mommabear7052 You bet... by the way....there are some low mountains I forgot to tell you about near Dominical...Some decent ocean views....(white water ocean views) Not the cool HIGH mountains, but still cooler than being on the beach. That could be a good option for you, but...again still 4 hours from airport.
HEY>>>>> I can't wait to take YOU to the Nicoya Peninsula ! Oh boy...are we gonna have some fun! Get ready, get ready, GET READY. *_ IF YOU are "ready"_* .... comment below that YOU are READY !!!

Did you vicit Hojancha hiw was it ??
I don't know of or I don't think I have ever heard of Hojancha? Maybe you spelled it wrong???
@@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica Yes, Hojancha is one of the cantones (municipalities) in the Nicoya peninsula, just as Nicoya (you should visit the colonial church, recently restored!), Santa Cruz, Nandayure (capital: Carmona) and the southeastern part, that belongs to Puntarenas municipality: the 3 districts of Lepanto, Paquera and Cóbano. Hojancha is -in area and population- the smallest municipality in the region, and the city is also smaller. South of Hojancha it is very mountaneous (of course not nearly as high as mountains in other parts of the country) and quite underdeveloped, but I know there is a great series of waterfalls, some of the highest in the country, and forests. Even more to the south is Puerto Carrillo, the only stretch of coast that belongs to Hojancha. On the other hand, to the north of Hojancha is the Matambú indigenous reserve, which is great to buy crafts from the Chorotega people. In all, you have to consider that the weather in the whole peninsula is quite dry and may be very hot (except in the highest mountains) around the last months of the dry season (especially March and April). On the other hand, probably the biggest attraction in the region is the local Guanacastecan culture, as, in most of the Guanacaste province (to which most of the Nicoya peninsula belongs to) it is very distinct from the rest of the country (in particular the areas that were populated through migration of people from the Central Valley). That distinctiveness even comes from Precolumbian times, as the Chorotega people's culture was most related to Mayan/Nahuatl cultures, while in other areas of what later became Costa Rica the influence was mostly from Chibchan peoples. Still today, you will notice a clear similarity in the culture in Nicoya with that in countries like Nicaragua and El Salvador.
@@vant83 Thanks for that information. We need to check it out.

YES, playa Carrillo is a beautiful beach.
