  • This video is Part 3 of a 5 part series on the Best Places to Live or Retire in Costa Rica.
    Today, we'll talk about and look at the Southern Border area of Costa Rica near Panama.
    We'll talk primarily about two towns with Italian roots, San Vito and Sabalito.
    Both San Vito, Costa Rica, and Sabalito, Costa Rica are very small agricultural towns.
    Very friendly, cool climate, great people and you'll not have to worry about seeing lots of tourists or paying tourist prices.

    More about this video:
    This area was our favorite area until we found the Rivas area which is located in Perez Zeledon.
    However, I believe everyone coming to Costa Rica should try living in Sabalito, Costa Rica, or San Vito, Costa Rica to get the rich authentic Costa Rican experience.
    Living around San Vito or Sabalito Costa Rica can be very affordable because it is a place where there is NOT much tourism and not a lot of Gringos.
    The prices are usually the normal prices that Ticos pay. This makes living in the area, affordable and shopping is fairly easy because you are so close to the Panama border where you can get groceries, gas, and much more at almost half the price.
    The area does NOT have a lot of ex-pats, however, a good number of ex-pats (Gringos) do live in the remote areas and you'll find a fair amount near the Linda Vista area.
    Living in this Southern area in San Vito or Sabalito ...you feel like you are NOT in a tourist area but enjoying authentic Costa Rica.

    This is some great information you guys bring. Before I made the move here, I read that the best Italian food in CR is in San Vito, which is where a group of Italians settled back in the day. Can you speak to that? I really enjoy your videos, and thanks so much for taking the time to make them.

    • @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica
      @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you're enjoying the videos...we appreciate you saying so. San Vito probably does have the best Italian food in CR given its Italian roots. We'd found a little place (can't remember the name but its on a dead end street off from town center by the park where the taxis line up) that specialized in pizza and it was the best we'd had in CR; however, I have to say that it's different from the pizza we've had in the US...fresh ingredients and great crust but just not much seasoning and I'm sure much healthier.

    Thanks for the videos, could You please talk about playas del coco?

    • @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica
      @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Genie, Playa del Coco....we've been there! And it is possible we will do a video on that at some point. We were NOT that impressed. However, that is because we do NOT like touristy areas. You might love it? Depending on your taste. Playa del Coco is situated on a beautiful kinda beach cove. GREAT for Boat Lovers....lots of boats anchored in that cove. Tons of Gringos...which also means more expensive Cost of Living.
      That is some basic information....if you have any other questions...please ask and we'll do our best to answer them...and hopefully we can do a video about that place at some point in the near future.
      Also...just a little fun fact from Wikipedia...
      Playas del Coco is one of the oldest beach communities in Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica. This region is also one of the fastest growing areas of tourism in Costa Rica. It has long been a popular destination with both local Costa Ricans as well as visitors from other countries during the traditional holiday seasons. Wikipedia

      @@raininmysoulwhite Sure Genie, Liberia is the go to place for most of your major shopping. Liberis is fairly big...however, not nearly as big as San Jose and the surrounding area. Great to get all the stuff you need but NOT too big. There is the airport near there which is a great benefit for you as well.

      You can get some great prices if you live near the coast. Many locals are catching fish and selling them all the time. Buying from a local will get you the best price, but, you don't know how long that fish has been put of the water???

      YES, Rivas is still our Favorite! We personally think, unless you are a BEACH person...everyone would love this place. ONLY negative...and it's NOT a killer or a big negative...is the higher into Rivas you get, the more rain you get. For example...where we are above Rivas, (area called Chimirol) the rainy season is more like 9 months instead of 6 months each year. But that is NOT bad when it only rains in the afternoon.
      Hopefully, you can either Rent you place as an AirBnB , long term rental or sell and move to the Rivas or Perez Zeledon area.

      @@mommabear7052 Quepos is HOT...but it's the beach, it is supposed to be. LOL, but NOT nearly as hot as some places. The avg temps in Quepos are from 72 degrees to 83 degrees on the low side and up to 75 to 90 on the high side...however, it does feel hotter than that because the sun is so much closer. It is VERY easy to get a sunburn in Costa Rica. This site will give you more detailed information:

    • @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica
      @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Hulagu, for those temps between 65 - 75 you need to find a place above or close to 3,500 feet. In Rivas....it is almost perfect temps... Also, some places in Sabalito, San Vito is the same. If you find any place over 3,500 and above...it is cool. Tinamaste is cool. But...if you get about 5,000 feet, you'll experience too many clouds during the rainy season which then hinders the view, but is nice in itself.
