Why do the people of the Nicoya Peninsula live so long?

  • Costa Rica’s largest peninsula has one of the largest populations of centenarians on the planet with more residents who are over 80 than anywhere else earth.
What’s the secret to their longevity?
Correspondent Harris Whitbeck visits the people of the Nicoya Peninsula. He tells us why inhabitants of this lush location live such long lives.
The number of people who live to be 100 years old or more is growing. This segment of the population is the fastest growing with more than 450 thousand of them living across the world. Experts say there are many factors that contribute to their longevity and recently they've started identifying key traits common to them all. Those traits have also been found in 5 distinct areas around the globe and two of them are in the Americas.
Harris Whitbeck travelled to one of these so-called “blue zones” for "Americas Now." He spends time with residents and talks to experts on the subject of longevity.
Check out his visit to this picturesque peninsula in Costa Rica where the centenarians of Nicoya are considered “living national treasures.”

Costa Rica seems like one of the world’s best governed countries. They have progressive environmental policies, provide their people with healthcare and pensions, and they remain a safe and stable country in a challenging region.
No wonder their people live so long.

"Physical activity is not just doing exercises or going for a jog. It's working on a farm and lifting heavy stuff.
" >>So, people, get active in a garden! Help an elder/child/friend/others. Spend time to grow and cook up real food. Watch less TV etc. :) Part transcript:
7:00 Tortillas are a staple for all meals in the Costa Rica diet. Traditional methods for making them involve the use of lime to soften corn husks. The lime contributes calcium that can strengthen bones that can weaken in old age. Researchers say combining nutrients found in natural foods is key to longevity.
7.58 It has to do with the way it is processed. They incorporate ash and lime and other minerals. It has been proven tortillas made that way are a great source of calcium. But there are many other factors too.
9:08 Many of the plants and herbs are considered by modern agriculture to be weeds. In an agricultural system in which only certain products are grown, anything else is considered bad.
9:50 There's likely more than one secret to their longevity. Nutrition is just one factor. Genetics could be another. But there has to be an environment that favors longevity too. Clean air. Little exposure to agrochemicals sand junk food. There is usually some sort of permanent physical activity.
10:02 food is what gives us energy. we need food to live. That's why it's so obvious. Physical activity is not just doing exercises or going for a jog. It's working on a farm and lifting heavy stuff. And being connected to life, right?
    14:39
Health policies in the country are the same for everybody. But here we try to focus on a healthy lifestyle to promote a higher quality of life for our elderly. Often, we have to adapt our policies to their special needs. The higher concentration of the elderly population requires us to modify the nature of our services...

Also one of the seniors mentioned that they still felt relevant in life. This is very important. I saw the elderly in this video holding hands and walking with children. This is wonderful. Working in a behavioral health facility, I see a lot of patients both young and old state that they don't have any reason to be alive and that's why they're suicidal. 80 and 90 year olds coming in because they've tried to overdose on pills due to no purpose in life. No family in their life no friends in their life they state there's no reason for them to live , this is so sad. Lots of family members in other states and children don't keep in touch with their parents. This seems to be the way of Americans, children and parents doing their own thing moving away from each other. No one's available to help each other.

The last phrase is interesting...The Nicoya Peninsula will continue producing centenarians for long time to come.
    Lucky for them.
I was born in rural Malaysia. Our family was very poor when I was young. Both my great grands died at 130. I remember tagging along them working in the rice field. They later moved back to Thailand, clearing jungle for rubber plantation. I never get to find out what age they were when they did that, but rough workout they must've been around 100.They were still around when a few great great grand sons and daughters were born.
My grand parents died around 100. My father died around 80. I'm now nearing 60. Great many of my school friends have already passed away, most while their parents still alive.
Far as I know, all were the successful ones in their education and careers and quite rich. They were the type who spent loads of money at pricey specialist hospitals. For periodic preventive check ups when they were younger, then huge huge loads more for chronic illness treatment.
I figure we too can continue producing centenarians - if we live like our great great grand fathers.
Trading that with what we have now? How many will.

    - Magnesium Deficiency Sets the Stage for Plaque in the Arteries --
A new animal study shows that "low levels" of magnesium promotes plaque formation in the arteries. During the study period magnesium deficient animals developed significantly more plaque in their aortas.
The researchers fed rabbits a diet known to produce atherosclerotic plaque. The thickness of artery walls increased 42% in magnesium lacking animals. LDL cholesterol was highest in the magnesium lacking rabbits and lowest in the magnesium supplemented rabbits.
This study adds further science to the idea that a diet lacking in magnesium sets the stage for heart disease.
Taking mineral "Magnesium" its good for cortisol and stress.People who are magnesium deficiency have the highest heart disease , heart attacks and Irregular Heartbeat ,(arterial plaque ). Diabetics have magnesium deficiency , elevated blood glucose levels increase the loss of magnesium in the urine, which in turn lowers blood levels of magnesium.” So getting enough magnesium is especially important in diabetes and people who are border line diabetic or over weight .
"Magnesium" has been shown to effectively prevent vascular calcification associated with chronic kidney disease. In the animal study researchers tested the effect of magnesium supplements on calcification of arteries. They found that magnesium relieved the degree of calcification with higher doses, offering better protection.

I’m watching this from Nosara in Guanacaste during the pandemic. The folks here have a vitally rich attitude. They help one another. They live simply and with a lot of heart. They become your friend and in that you have a protector. There are no barriers, generational, class or racist to serve as obstacles. That is what I feel is their greatest secret. It is no wonder there is an ecological approach to issues, what is best for the earth and its people. Everyone follows the social contract for the good of all and there is no authoritarian leader or party. A simple approach to life means eating food from the earth not from processing factories. Means few chemicals or toxic waste. Means no money wasted on military. They are pura vida.

These spots with lots of supposed centenarians have one thing in common: Once they introduce birth registration, the number of centenarians drops to normal levels. What a coincidence.

I wish to have this kind of life style the world is too advance now. Life back then was simple. People actually live their best lives back then everything was genuine and pure. People in the west especially millenials need to see this kind of life style. :)

@@mightyobserver12 Just live the way they do - cook your own simple foods with lots of veggies - incorporate fish and little bit of lean meats , add fruit smoothies. Go to sleep early. Get good sunshine from morning till noon. Stop stressing about stupid stuff. Hurry up, you have 2 more years until real infertility.
