Dr PJ Thum - Speaking Truth to Power

  • In any healthy ‘democratic’ country, no one should lose his job for speaking truth to power but that’s what had happened to Dr. Thum Ping Tjin (PJ Thum). He lost his job in NUS after publishing and giving lectures on his research on Operation Coldstore, where over 100 activists were detained without trial in the 1963.
PJ Thum, a historian, is a rare breed in Singapore. He gave up an esteem position overseas and chose to return to Singapore because South East Asia is his home. Despite not being able to continue his teaching, he doesn’t yield to authority and even more fervent in his sharing of Singapore history and politics.
Go listen to his talks, podcasts and one can feel how much he loves Singapore. Idealistic, intelligent, eloquent but more importantly, a man with moral courage.
His repeated calls for a debate with the government have so far met with a deafening silence.
I’m privileged to be able to produce this video. This is 'PJ Thum 101' for Singaporeans who have yet to know the man.

Courage invariably costs the individuals greatly. In my mind's eye is the late JBJ. At the final tally, st his departure, he appeared to have lost but look at how the party he had founded has been resurrected. Then, look at the family of LKY and the tragic, shattered and fragmented outcome. So? Both had returned to dust. What did each leave behind? What truly counts? PJ, retain your conscience and live, truly free. It is priceless.
A repository, you are and like others, I have benefited much.

Amazing insight ! It takes a visionary with courage to have the forsight on how his doings will impact the future by what he is steadfast in.
But Kenneth looks upset whenever I see him on camera. He doesn't smile. Lky have shamed his late dad n I feel his hurt especially his dad have done nothing wrong

What is happening right now is the VERY same thing happening before in TAIWAN, before its democratization in 1991, three years after Lee Teng-Hui became President of the Republic Of China (ROC). Even our own Changi Airport built in 1984 had designs taken from then Chiang Kai-Shek International Airport (中正機場) in then Taoyuan County which was renamed in September 2006 to Taoyuan International Airport (桃園國際機場) as part of the democratization process.
I can envision a similar process having to be undertaken in Singapore before we reach the level of REAL democracy in a vibrant City-State as fought for by our true pioneers from British colonialism.

Hi Johnathan, just Curious. Was Chiang Ching-kuo the leader who finally allow Democracy to flourish in Taiwan?

    • @TsurugiMatsuda
      @TsurugiMatsuda 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Callsign-Blade_RunnerSG Sadly no.
Chiang Ching-kuo succeeded his father in 1975 after the latter's death, but repressions continued including the Lin I-shiung 林義雄 torture incident and later the Lin Family Murders 林宅血案 which his mother and twin daughters were murdered in cold blood. The initiatives Chiang Ching-Kuo made in democratization of Taiwan was more due to heavy international pressure as the UN booted out ROC's place in the United Nations in 1979, and the United States switching diplomatic ties to Beijing instead of Taipei in 1979 (thus diminishing ROC's legitimacy in the world which Chiang Ching-Kuo's legitimacy is based upon), but not before the US Congress passed unanimously a bill to legitimize informal relations between Washington DC and Taipei known as the "Taiwan Relations Act 1975", whose legal position in the US far supersedes the "US-China Three Communiques" which was in effect via Presidential Executive Order.
In short, Chiang Ching-kuo's dream of "Democratization" of Taiwan turned out to be in complete defiance of the late man's wishes until Lee Teng-Hui, a benshengren, ascended into the Presidency in 1988 that puts what Chiang spoke into actual action that allowed Democracy to thrive in Taiwan. As Dr Chee Soon Juan says about Politicians, ''It's not what you say but what you do." that counts.
Lee Teng-Hui paid a very heavy price for his actions in allowing Democracy to thrive, which included Presidential Pardons to persons involved in the Kaoshiung Incident in 1979, as well as allowance of full parliamentary elections in 1991 following the Wild Lilies Movement. He later won the 1996 Presidential Elections under a political message of fighting against Communist Authoritarianism and resulted in him being booted out of the Kuomintang in 2000 after the first transition of power and Chen Shui-Bian winning the Presidential Elections under the DPP. Lee later became the oldest pan-Green vanguard in forming his own Political Party, the Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) 台聯黨 in 2001 which became one of the oldest supporting parties of Tsai Ing-wen's DPP since 2008.

I see, thank you so much for the information Johnathan. Will go read up on it. Had always wondered how did Taiwan manage to succeed in becoming a Democracy and thought that Chiang Ching-kuo willingly relinquish power towards the end of his life for it to happen.
Now I know he didn’t intentionally do it for the benefit of Taiwanese but because of international pressure.

Thank you Bee Pin for this snippet of the pressure imposed on PJ by the powers that be for his "speaking truth to power". I hope he gets this message. I am a nobody but have been singled out for special treatment in more ways than imaginable & bizarrely. I have lived through extreme hardship for two decades through 'economic suffocation' almost to break point. It is hard, and I do question God how long can I take it. But the blessings in disguise have been clear now. One, my down time was in self education of S'pore's devts & politics, as well as international issues, through reading & following up any books, leads or links. My only asset was plenty of time daily to read more widely & think through the info. That is enlightening & truly offsets any financial and personal set backs. Two, it was a time of self reflection, time w/God for spiritual health & assurance that he is w/me. Three, learn prudence & self restraint in financial expenditure to the extent that any extras in income, albeit miniscule, now is a bonus. Finally, consider it a privilege & blessing from our Almighty Heavenly Father to wean us of any personal hubris, learn humility, & unstinting trust in him for what lies ahead. We can sleep securely, and at peace w/ourself. King David in his many psalms reveal the dire plight he was in many times, surrounded by his enemies. His psalms reveal how God came through for him. Stay strong in him, brother!

There are many Christians in Singapore Govt and then you have PJ. There are many, preachers to benchwarmers , who profess the faith, but few, extremely few in number, who would suffer the ramification of pursuing truth that would liberate the oppress, and the exploited, by those in political power - which is the intended purpose of the gospel(hijacked by Christianity)
Truth is only one aspect of salvation[salvation of nations; not personal and self indulgent salvation, through the perversion of substitutionary atonement(spiritual escapism) taught by the religious church]
Truth exposes the foundational weaknesses, falsity and deceitfulness of the system(body of the anointed to rule) by which certain men have been “deified”(the essence of Sin) - absolute power or authority.
The pursuit of truth is only the first step towards establishing the righteousness of the kingdom(between the Govt or the Head and her people - social covenant). The anointed body with the mandate from above said he(not to be worshipped as an idol) is the way, the truth and the life. Life is found in the new kingdom(anointed body). The mandated “anointed body” is the way to truth( no one shall stand in the way of truth) which leads to the abundant life(added to you) we seek.
Truth(only an isolated aspect from one man) alone is not enough to remove the “old man”. You need to know the truth( about the new kingdom) which set men free.
Joh 8:32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
Christianity(all those who indulge in it) does not know the truth about the ONE who set you free!
Nevertheless, keep the faith but ditch religion(don’t waste money and time supporting clueless leaders)

Well DR PJ, Times have changed singaporean just have to resign to fate of having one party rule . As long as PAP is in power, they are able to set their rules, its impossible to have oppositions parties entering . They are clever as they know how to deal with their opponents using all kinds of strategy. They have the human resources, system and money.
Yes Predicted singapore will become like HK or Japan one day. More cramp, expensive, even higher paced, more foreigners. Which is indeed a problem we see daily and awares off. But what can we do? Haha.
ignorant people, eventually will have their bad day to come.
Dont waste your effort and kind heart to deal with these people.
You are such a talent and smart person.
Why not quit being an opposition, and use your talent on building a business oversea or career.
Im sure you will be happier.
So Let the ignorant and the public to settle their own problem. And you have a peace of mind.
Sorry to say this, apologies to people whom may disagree with what i say.
I just feels that Talents like Dr PJ should pursue more other things he deserve in his life.

No salary, you could always take up jobs like security guard or cleaning job. But I think you are too good for these jobs.

Rest assured that Dr Thum is more capable and knowledgeable than you. I dont think you are good enough for jobs like security or cleaning, let alone in academia.

Koala Bear But we have to be humble and take up any jobs that come along. Or else we are not considered humble and becoming elitist.

If I get you right, you are saying people who believe in God are dumb. I had like to say that going by your theory the same can be said instead, that people who don't (like you) are dumb, given how science still can't give concrete explanations on how exactly man, earth, the universe and everything came into existence with irrefutable proof and how so far, no one has been able to provide definite evidence that God does not exist.
Matter of fact is, believing or not has nothing to do with being dumb or not. People just see things from a different point of view, have different opinions and chose to take the side of what they consider to be more fathomable and applicable to their personal experiences, needs and wants in life.
If you have such strong negative feelings towards religion, maybe go to a religion related video and express it, there are people there who are ready to take you on with real arguments.
And if you can't handle an argument, then leave religion out and stop behaving like a troll and noob.
