Unhealthy Honeybees, An Outbreak | An Apiarist Inspector's POV

  • It's another week closer to the honey flow and I have an issue in the bee yard that's in town. It's really time to be healed up and on the way to a flow, yet here we are with an issue that will, and has, set the in-town yard back. I think we have a possible disease outbreak and I've got someone that offered to come by and help me verify what we have going on. Come on into town and let's see where we stand in this situation.

    Thanks for sharing and shining a bit of light on what to look or in this instance picking up on a different odor within the colony. But gotta say... That fella was Johnny on the spot, no hesitation on beginning a diagnosis of what could be the issue. Then starts working on testing. Great job on your end recognizing there's a problem that needs addressing and the same for the fella from the State knowing how to address the problem quickly!
    Lord willing you'll have this remedied in no time!

      Hey there Tim. I was so appreciative of Allen. Great learning experience for me. He’s coming back and I’m blown away with that. And like you said, Lord willing and this will be fine and they will cruise on into fall and be production once again for next season. If the queen mate ok, they’ll all be new queens ready to go.

    My state inspector retires a couple of years ago. I miss having him come for a visit. The new inspector is pretty cool though and very fun to do an inspection with. They do mite counts too and give out free (paid for by our taxes...) pollinator signs!!! It's all good, we are blessed to be able to work these funny yellow ladies.

      Means a lot to have a good inspector and a good program. I never had Allen out when he was inspector, but he was so limited by our states abysmal budget woes. But just meeting him shows me he was a great inspector who truly was there to help.

    Once again you have shown us what the trial and tribulations of a beekeeper can be and how to overcome them. Great video. On a happier note, I opened a hive I had not been in for a couple of weeks and found six (6) virgin queens. What a surprise! So, I had to do some new nucs fast. I hope they all make it out and back. Lesson learned, never neglect a hive this long during swarm season, even if you think they are a small hive. Thanks for sharing.

    I'm glad it's not AFB. And your EFB must be different than what we have. To clean EFB l just need a flow or a feeder of 1:1 and next week its gone. AFB is a problem here. Nobody wants to admit they had it. A couple of years back one of the nomadic guys brought it on the island and l had to burn a yard of 20. God bless him. You can smell it as soon you get close to the hives.. and it never gets better. Larvas became brown liquid after they cap them. And ropey on a stick test. But the smell is something you never forget

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Wow!! That was unfortunate. Doing everything you’re supposed to do and someone brings it in. That stinks! It’s the same here for cleaning up EFB….to an extent. We have several cases every season but most don’t even notice it because we get a marginal flow end of February and it’s gone before the beekeeper even sees it. These particular colonies just didn’t clear up for whatever reason and I don’t think they all had it in the beginning. I think my initial February assessments were the cause for the spread of it. The hives on the other stand did clear out. We have a flow kicking in and I’m hoping to see improvement. Allen is coming back Friday after rounding up an EFB kit and we’re going to check them again for actual EFB. Hopefully we see better hives. I did release an inmates queen in each of them last week, so that should help too if the old queens were infected.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks James and glad you haven’t had to deal with it. It can be cleared up, but it basically takes those hives out of the game and makes for a situation with just having disease present in the bee yard. At least it’s isolated to that yard and that stand as the stand in that yard are over 100 yards apart. That does help.

    Great news and video. I had one with a few sunken cells and tan-ish larvae early on. This particular hive has some really old frames from when i bought my first bees from another beekeeper. I pulled a couple outside frames and gave them 2 new frames in the brood nest. Turns out they needed them because they drew them out quickly and filled with brood. I went in them this past weekend and all the brood looks great. I'm still cycling out the frames. It may be just me, but new comb seems to reinvigorate them. In my fourth year I'm seeing quite a bit of comb that needs to be cycled out. Take care and thanks for the content. I've also been to the Quetico, beautiful and peaceful place.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yea Phillip, I agree with your assessment and new comb. I even think we can see bad patterns at times that are caused by very old comb and shrunken cells due to the cocoon buildup. I actually started and experiment one season to compare, but never finished it. I say Thai because I’ve seen beautiful patterns and complete laying in new comb and then all spotty next frame over in old dark comb. Stuff from my second year(wired wax).

    Buddy shows up with dirty gloves and a dirty hive tool. Now he's got EFB on those gloves. He would not get near my Apiaries. EFB, the larvae dies before capping. AFB, the larvae dies in the cap cell.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow, really sideliner? He showed up with older gear so as not to spread it to is own yard and you heard us talking about sterilization. He showed up to help me out. He offered a perspective and has most likely seen way more foulbrood of both types than you or I, and that’s what you got out of all that? Also, I know the difference and that’s why we were testing decomposed larvae under the caps with the AFB test kit. There were no more EFB kits available where he picked this kit up, of his own accord, so we tested and were able to rule out AFB, which is fine with me. I’m grateful for his assistance and I am confident he knows very well what he is doing. Thanks for your comment.

    • @sidelinerbeekeeper
      @sidelinerbeekeeper 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @MikeBarryBees. I have lots of experience with EFB. Three years ago, I spread it from one hive to 100, and I'm still dealing with it. I treated hives yesterday with antibiotics because I have EFB in one of my hives. I am going to put out a video on how to identify and treat and what to do if you can't get antibiotics. Disposable nitrile gloves should have been worn, you new you had sick hives. EFB is a bacteria and easily killed with bleach. I highly recommend you carry a pail of bleach while you have this outbreak to wash your hive tool and consider disposable gloves. His smoke, the hive tool trick, is horrible advice. It was filthy.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sidelinerbeekeeper I’m not even going to go back and forth with you after this. I just didn’t care for how you stated your comment and your opinion on handling it with regard to tools, which is your opinion. It wasn’t horrible advice and yours isn’t either. I mean, you’re still dealing with it, right? I use nitrile gloves to administer meds and check status as well. Just not that day, didn’t have them with me. But as we stated and many seemed to miss, we sterilized everything, me with alcohol and a with old boxes with bleach. His advice isn’t horrible as the pine tar on the tool has nothing to do with sterilization. Heat and freeze both will kill EFB bacteria. I appreciate your opinion, your facts, and your experience, and I respect all three. But you need to do the same as a person when you comment. I see you on others videos doing the same thing. You seem to let everyone know what they’re doing wrong. I’m not at all saying I’m right, especially with disease, but I do my due diligence when I can and I try my very best to respect others’ opinions and especially their advice and experience. Try a little more tact, albeit I wasn’t exactly tactful with you on my reply, so for that, my apologies. But show some tact Brian. You obviously don’t have it all figured out or you wouldn’t be still fighting it. Nor do I have it all figured out, or I wouldn’t be fighting it. Oh, and I agree, the spread was done initially by my inattention to the first sighting thinking I had a bad queen. As I reflected this past week, my initial assessments in early spring was what spread it thru this yard. It did not make it to my home yard fortunately. Another item; you do understand in this region of humidity, heat, and rain, we have EFB present a lot of the time early in spring. Most people don’t realize it and the influx of February and early March nectar flush it out as the bees overcome it. So, I will be watching your videos as I subbed your channel as I’m always willing to learn from anyone as long as they have sound advice. And when I comment on your videos, I will be respectful whether I agree or not. In beekeeping there are several absolutes, and hundreds of variables.

    • @sidelinerbeekeeper
      @sidelinerbeekeeper 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @MikeBarryBees thanks for the reply. Sorry for being blunt, straight to the point I am. I won't need to comment or offer advice on anyone's channel going forward; the bees are theirs, not mine. I will only pile on the compliments. Let's build each other up. For some reason, I thought I was being helpful, I am glad you corrected me. Here is where I think we are different. I truly am a listener, I do not get offended by someone speaking up or out of place because I might learn something. We don't know what others have to offer. I am the guy who will listen and ask questions. I welcome the advice of others, whether it is right or wrong. I decipher what is useful and disregard the rest without offense, but I am Canadian. I don't think we get offended easily up here. I found the bees were fun when they weren't paying the mortgage. You're still having fun with yours, and that's great. Maybe in 20 years they won't be so stressful. Good luck with your EFB outbreak.

    Hey Mike where does a person purchase antibiotics for EFB ect?? Is it regulated??

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It is regulated. There is a form that a vet has to fill out and then that can be submitted to the supply company, like dadant or another one. I believe if the vet has access, or a local farmer’s co-op has it, they can get it to you. But it has to be thru a vet. This just happened in the last 7 or so years. Used to you could order it from any bee supply that carried it.

    Mike I know this is off topic a little but when your queens are hatching out of a incubator what do you feed them to keep them a live and when they hatch do you leave them in the incubator when they hatch or do you take them out. Thank you Mike and thanks for the amazing videos.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there Patrick. Always encouraging to read your kind words. So, what I do is keep them in the incubator and in a cage. On the end of the cage, I put a drop of honey and somewhere else a drop of water. I do that in the morning and in the evening. They need to be pulled out of the incubator in a reasonable amount of time though. I have had them last three or four days, but I get very nervous. They need to be in a hive sooner rather than later so they can be fed properly and with royal jelly. A queen gets royal jelly their entire life and they need it to produce. Virgins maybe not so much, but the virgin also needs five days for her ovaries to mature prior to a mating flight, and I can only imagine that happens more so or better when in the colony receiving the correct feeding. Hope that answers your question. Have a great rest of the week Patrick and God's Blessing!!

    On the last video that you posted with the sick hive, i noticed that you were using the same gloves and tools that you used in the sick colony to manage the healthy ones, i made mention of it in the comments. Truth be told this situation is not surprising

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      And when you made mention I informed you that the gear was sterilized and not reused on the same hives. And to clear it further for, that hive was looked at afterwards in a Totally different yard. I guess I’ll add to this and say, what is your alternative? Throw everything away for a disease that’s controllable? If sterilization isn’t enough, then that’s all that is left. If we had detected AFB, or I thought it was early on, maybe I would have done something different. But EFB is present almost every year to some degree and we keep on moving. Most years you don’t even see it in early spring and it’s gone when the first bit of nectar flows in. For the record, I use a different hive tool in my yards regularly. The one in the last two videos, in the sick hives only, was only used on the sick hives. I segregated it and soaked it in alcohol after getting done as well as clean the gloves. That’s why you saw the same hive tool. One tool for sickly, sterilized between yards, and one for regular inspections.

      I’ve seen the video Rodney. Just went back and rewatched it after reading your comment. Good info for sure. The data still hasn’t been proven with just using the oils mixed here at home, but I like what the PhD said about the commercially produced products. I actually use Hive Alive in its correct dosage, so that’s a plus for sure. And these hives all had doses of Strong Microbials Super DFM probiotics. They’re getting another dose this week, and could be the reason the other stand pulled out of the EFB. Dr. Harris also has bought some super DFM and then talked to a colleague of his that said that the probiotics did great in the lab but failed in the field. But I still feel good about the research done and will continue the probiotics. Thanks for the comment and prompting me to go back and rewatch. Bob interviews great people with good info.

    Need your opinion. I got 3 hives that made it through winter. Each hive has 5 frames of bees. Spotty brood pattern. Sure hate to give up on them. Is there anything I can do to help the queen. Or should I just re-queen them. Can you discuss on a video when you need to give up or ways to help the queen. Thanks

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Eric, it really depends on your season and when your flow kicks in. I have time in my season since our main flow is mid-May and my queens are assessed mid February, so I usually give them about three weeks, unless they’re old queens. If your season is more compact, I wouldn’t wait too long. Spotty brood could be a high mite load with hygienic bees removing larvae or the larvae dying as the mites feed on them during breeding, or an inferior queen, or even an old queen. It could be brood disease like in my video. EFB is common coming out of winter for us but the flow cleans it out usually. Brown and curled up larvae before they’re capped is a sign, with the spotty brood. As a small scale beekeeper, requeening can be expensive if you buy mated queens and they’re not always accepted. But some people just like to do that to keep the bees moving forward and really, if you’re only buying 3 or 4 and requesting every two or three years, it’s not bad. I really like buying $5 queen cells and putting them in. You can also feed them some syrup and throw in a quality pollen patty and see if that helps push her, but if she’s worn out, it won’t matter. That’s best I can tell you as far as what I do.

      @@MikeBarryBeesmy flow has started. The hives have no drone brood. They are bringing in lots of nectar. I am in the western part of Virginia. Where do you buy $5.00 Queen cells. @@ericshipplett3517 we have a commercial guy and he sells them. Larger operations that graft a lot for themselves normally graft way more than they need to be sure they have enough and they will sell off the excesses. They’re normally a day away from emerging, but that’s fine with me. Yes, mated queens will keep the colony up to speed without losing time in a brood break some you don’t lose workers for the honey flow. I would keep the old queens in a NUC until you see the new queen accepted.

      He cleans his gear. He sterilizes with alcohol and he also broke out old stuff that was stashed since he was dealing with possible disease. As he stated, we use alcohol and do the best we can to eliminate any spread. But yes, had I not sterilized my gloves and tools when I was going thru hives, it can be spread. EFB isn’t as bad and the spores can be killed and die off easier. Not 70 years like AFB spores.
