Hello, I am a hobby beekeeper in Southeast Louisiana. I have been keeping bees for 12 years now and decided to create some videos to show all aspects of beekeeping in my little operation in my region of the country. I always tell people, I am not doing 'How To' videos, only 'How I Do' videos. It's simply a VLOG to show some of the different tasks associated with beekeeping. From the fun stuff, like splitting hives, doing hive inspections, and harvesting honey, to the tedious stuff, like painting and building boxes and scraping frames.
This channel was initially set up to share videos with family and friends out of state, so there are a few old videos that I've kept on just because. I hope you enjoy the channel.

Beekeeping & Varroa Control-Wishful Thinking? | Applying OAV
Well folks, I'm back at it....Oxalic Vapor treatment on the hives. Varroa control is a never ending task and I'm not sure we really have any control. We just do the best we know and keep taking care of our bees. Come on along out to the bee yard. It's a beautiful day to vape some colonies and kill off some pesky mites.

Rendering Beeswax from Honey Harvest | Bees in Winter
มุมมอง 4.8Kวันที่ผ่านมา
Beautiful beeswax!! That's what we're dealing with in this video. Welcome to SE Louisiana and what I consider the off-season in beekeeping for me. Part of the off-season always includes rendering beeswax. Today I'm running my wax melter in order to render some wax cappings that I trimmed off during honey harvest. This wax is what I use to make candles and sometimes other products, and it is the...
Beekeepers Rest But Never Stop | Winter Fun
มุมมอง 3.9K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Well folks, winter is upon us and so are the mundane tasks and jobs that some of us dread and others just enjoy as a past time. I don't mind small and tedious tasks too much, but it really doesn't matter because they still have to be done. In this video, I need to clean some equipment and take care of a hive that has a tray full of DE needing changed. Come on along and let's get this work done....

Hello everyone and hope those of you in the United States had a great Thanksgiving. I invite you to come along with me as I check to see if the hive that had the issue in town is actually growing after our cold snap. Beekeeping Season Ends | Did I Do Enough
มุมมอง 3Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Well folks, here we are at the end of another season. This is the time of year that I begin to really think about how the season went, what needs to change for next season, and what kind of equipment needs to be bought or built. Of all of the thoughts that I have, the most predominant thoughts are those of wondering if I did enough for my bees, or even did I do too much. It's always a mind game...
Follow-up Hive Inspection | Paving a Road to Recovery
มุมมอง 2.9Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Hello everyone and welcome back to SE Louisiana. It's back to the bee yard to check on the colony that sustained terrible losses and then was robbed due to a mistake I made with mite treatments. Both were organic compounds for the treatments, but when both met in the hive, and it caused quite the issue and a lot of dead bees. I am not 100% sure it was the treatments, but it sure looks that way....

Well folks, this was a hard video to make as far as the subject matter. It's always hard when tough things happen to the colonies, but it's even more tough when we the beekeeper caused it. Beekeeping Season | Slow Times | Solar Waxing

As the days get shorter and the golden rod starts drying up, we know that the beekeeping season is coming to an end. Well, nothing really ends since the tedious tasks of equipment replacement and planning for next year begins. It's always something, but not in this video. I am wrapping up OAV, pulling the pollen trap, and cleaning up some wax. At least its a much slower pace. Come on out to the...

Beekeepers Hate Varroa Mites | Just Vaping with Bees
มุมมอง 2.4K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hello everyone. With the mite counts high on a few hives in-town, and some Oxalic Vapor treatments underway on them, I decided to go ahead and work on the hives at home. Why not, right? It's time for the bees to slow down and settle in for the winter and set the cruise control, but mites can't wait. I hate the mites and they are the deadliest threat to the honeybees. So here we go, vaping with ...

Thanks Mike hope to see you at expo.
I am in Shreveport. Want to trade. I have lorobbees version the sideline one. Battery power. Bought in October of this year. Wish I had a corded provap instead.
See you at NAHBE
Another nice video Mike. Happy New Year and I hope you have a great time at the Expo.
I agree Mike seeing way too many folks adding fondants or routine sugar bricks to hives in the Fall and over the Winter as a regular "feeding" routine instead of as an emergency feed to tide the bees over during poor weather just before the flow starts. I believe it encourages bees to come up to the top of the hive and stay there instead of staying down below where their regular winter food store are/should bee. Bees up north are not inclined to go back down or to the outside edges where there might still be food. Like my hives to be bulked up in the Fall to have sufficient food stores/resources (60 pounds worth in Pennsylvania) to last until Spring. Usually keep some frozen frames of honey in the freezer to add in (once thawed) as emergency food or if not needed add them to spring nuc sales. Looking forward to seeing ya at the Expo!
Thanks for the video. See ya’ in Louisville.
Thanks for sharing Mike. My northern bees need their fondant. Hope to see you in Louisville. Happy New Year
Wish i could make it to expo this year. We have had a really warm Dec so far, with them flying so much i wonder if thats why so many hives are light
I agree it’s only as emergency. Here in Michigan I always leave at least “1” honey super on top of double deep for them to winter over . But are times when Temperatures are zero an below and a strong hive will go through a deep an a super like water to stay warm . 80% of the time ain’t got no choice but to feed🤷🏻♂️. My first year was an education 😢 had 4 super strong hives going into winter and was sure they would be fine.( was an extremely snowy windy sub zero winter that year) That first spring I had nothing but all dead hives I was heartbroken and ready to get out of the bee business. My grandfather and my great grandfather raised bees but my father had no interest in it So I didn’t have anyone to guide me. I learned from my mistakes and promise myself that would never happen again on my watch allowing my girls to starve to death . Mid January “regardless “ each an every hive gets 2 pounds. Grandfather always preached ( Son a ounce of prevention is worth apound of cure ) Up here we just don’t have a choice unless you have a huge barn an can move all hives in out of the direct weather. I did a thermo image of all the hives and most are at or near the honey supers. They are calling for a below normal January temperature for us an that could be Zero an below. If that happens will be some bad news for the bees. Down South it gets cold and freezing at times but you normally don’t see Zero an below . But I sure wish when I got out of the military in my youth I would of stayed an lived down south instead of coming back home to Michigan . Over my lifetime I would have saved millions in cost 😂😂😂 God bless an keep safe Mike and thanks for all the time you spend making videos to learn from we all appreciate it ❤❤❤
Hello Mike we have had rain rain an cold but now we having a few good warm days so it is OA for me in the morning. I got behind on this round. Just a thought for you an us mainly . On TH-cam there are two weather videos I watch (1) weather nation (2) Rynn hall . They have been saying we all on the mid an East are getting ready to have a MAJOR MAJOR weather change in January an maybe February or part of February so far . With COLD AN SNOW . Looked like you are going to get some of it also . But our temperature are going to be down around-0- an highs in the teens or maybe lower 🤷♂️🤷♂️. Be safe traveling an have fun . Thanks
Mike, I always put sugar on my hives for the winter in a plastic top hive feeder. It is there for emergency food an as a moisture absorber. If it’s still there in the spring, I use it to make syrup to feed splits. Hopefully, I will see you at the Expo. I plan on being there if the Good Lord is willing and the Tennessee River doesn’t rise too much!
See you Thursday. Safe travels.
Keeping them healthy and strong! Thanks Mike!
I have pulled a few empty supers i had left on hive for insurence. Warm winters have hurt us in S.C. too
Left supers on so I wouldn't have to feed but didn't work this year. Dry sugar on now
Ya gotta try the InstantVap. So nice not to drag a cord around! See you in a couple of days Mike!!
Great video Mike! Thanks for sharing and look forward to meeting you at the expo🐝
I'm afraid these warm Winters some of us are having is redefining what a "heavy" hive is in the Fall. It seems my Hive Alive fondant is becoming a more important part of my Winter set-up. I don't really like spending the money, but $20 worth of "insurance" on a hive that could make me close to $1000 is a pretty easy pill to swallow!!! See you soon!!!!
Looking forward to seeing you at the Expo! Safe travels! 🐝💛
It's tough to get them ready for winter that so far hasn't showed up. Very few days that my bees are staying home and I'm sure it's the same for your area. But you're spot on that it's our responsibility to keep them fed. Take care and enjoy the Expo.
That's an excellent point; get them ready in the Fall instead of having to supplement in the winter. I just wish sugar prices would come down; it's not cheap to feed bees these days. I began insulating my hives several years ago and discovered an unexpected benefit in that they use far less honey to overwinter.
👍👍👍
Remember the days of petal powered generators! 😂
Mike, have a great New Years and have fun at the expo. I'm not going this year but I'll be down your way at Gulf Shores most of Jan. I might be bring down some cold weather. LOL
Hey Mike, thanks for the update. Have fun at the expo. 56 degrees today finally. I hit them all good with o/a. I think it makes all the difference with healthy bees coming out of winter.
Happy New Year Mike! Have a great time at the Expo.
Spot on my man. Get them ready for the winter when fall arrives, and usually they end up good when spring hits. The season does not end when you extract the honey. Beekeeping is always preparing for “what” is coming. Static beekeeping equals dead hives in the spring. Enjoy your travels.
Hope Christmas was wonderful and a happy new year to you and the family. Looking forward to EXPO again this year! Already over spent my budget.
Happy new year 🎉
Thanksforr sharing Mike .Happy New Years
Happy New Year 🎉 Thanks for the video 😊
Thank you so much for making those candles for me! Completed my advent wreath for the year! Was fun to watch the wax melting process too 😊
So glad you enjoyed it and thank you so much for your patronage!! Looking forward to talking to you guys later next season as you get bees in your boxes. Next year I'll make sure you have what you need prior to December so you have the entire advent covered.
Awesome video for new beekeepers to learn queen rearing
Thanks, I’m glad you liked it and I hope it helped some new beekeepers out there!!
Yepper, electrical equipment works so much better when plugged in🤨😳🤫 Merry Christmas and see ya in two weeks!
Merry Christmas to you as well Tad. Safe travels and see you soon.
Merry Christmas, Mike
Thanks and same to you!!
Merry Christmas Mike! Thanks for another nice video, may God bless you and your family!
Thanks, you too! Have a wonderful and Spirit filled Christmas as well!
Merry Christmas
Same to you!
Thanks for this year's videos, can't wait till next year's videos btw, did I understand it right when you talked about the liir, are you with the fire department?
Thanks for the support!! I was a volunteer for many years in the rural communities I lived in. I got all my formal training at LSU Fire and Rescue training center and we got a brand new thermal imager back in the 90’s that was huge! I volunteered in two districts in Louisiana when I was stationed on shore duty here a couple different times and then in Clay County Florida for 4 years. I was an engineer in my last stint and was an EMT-Basic for all 12 years.
@@MikeBarryBees .. WoW, I ❤ firefighting ( and live behind a large fire station with 15+ FF vehicles) .. As a European looking at the US, your firefighters are real heroes, especially since your members do way more interior attacks than our FF, and many are EMTs too. Here there's always an ambulance nearby as Holland is very compact. .. But your cops .. they look like unhinged sovereign citizens who ruin people's lives with bogus charges just because they didn't bow fast enough. (of course not all cops are bad, but ALL the good cops will cover up the crimes of the bad ones.) You must've seen a lot of their victims in your career. Respect!.👍👍. and a Marry Christmas.
@ it was an adventure for sure. I’d say the media portrays the cops here in the US in a lot worse light than it really is. Media has really demonized our law enforcement. My mother was from Holland and when she passed away, she still had a green card. She grew up in Winterwijk.
@@MikeBarryBees .I quit watching Legacy Media after Trump got elected in 2016 and the fake news got out of control (even here in Europe).. I get my info from bodycam channels like The Civil Rights Lawyer, LackLuster, and Adit Argive .. I don't want to ruin your holiday but look at Audit Argive. It can quickly show you the bad side of US policing. Greetings from Holland
🤠👍
I think a wax melter is on my horizon...Merry Christmas Mike. Have a great holiday season, stay warm....
Thanks Brice and hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year as well. The melters are nice. I like that I can do it inside.
Love the video Mike. Hope to see you at the expo again this year. Merry Christmas!!
Thanks so much, I appreciate it. Hope to see you there too!

Is that your trailer for NAHBE deals?
😂😂. I wish!! Also wish I could afford to load it😂😂
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!
Thanks! You too!
Do you also have a full time job?
Yes, I work 40 to 50 hours a week. Makes it challenging for sure.
Nice rendering video, good looking blocks of wax. Wax rendering and usage are a couple of things I need to dial in. See you in Kentucky
Thanks Randy, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Lord willing, I’ll be there and look forward to seeing you again.
This holiday season I tried some of the white rubbery silicone molds off of Amazon... they worked really well and the price is right! Very pleased with results. Placing toothpicks on the sides of the mold, under the hairclip holding the wick, will allow you to fill the mold and not have to deal with leveling issues. For sure Jesus is the reason we celebrate and give thanks. Amen! See ya at the Expo!
See you at the expo Nancy! Thanks for the tip!! Merry Christmas!!
Love the message. Yes, Jesus is the reason for the season.❤🎉
100%!! Happy New Year!!
Great video Mike. Do you have to purchase additional wax, or do you generate all you need for your candle business? See you soon!!!
Thanks Keith! So far, I’ve been able to have enough from my hives. I think if I ever run too low, I’ll probably just temporarily stop sales. Same with honey. I’d rather always be able to say with confidence that it’s all from my operation.
3:05 I like my flir 😊🐝☀️Thanks Mike!
Yep, great products from FLIR.
