    This girl went from casual streamer in a community I've personally NEVER heard of (yogscast (probably because region)), to MG community rage, to speedrunning SENSATION, to getting mentioned across social media platforms, articles across the world, and even being mentioned by Hideo himself in the span of two days!? Her phone must have been on fire with notifications! What an overwhelming event congratulations to her. Truly a great discovery.

    The crazy thing is, when you look at it at scale, people are finding stuff like this on their own every day in all kinds of games, but they aren't streaming to a large audience or aren't speedrunners, so they just shake their head and say, "That's weird," and then never think about it again.

    I think the funniest thing about this whole saga was that Revolver Ocelot was able to accidentally troll a speedrunner with the bomb because its usual intended speedrunning purpose was rendered unnecessary and Nick forgot about it.

  • @BunzJackson
    @BunzJackson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    As a longtime Yogscast fan and someone who has gotten into speedrunning over the last few years, this was such a cool thing to watch unfold. Both the Yogscast and speedrunning communities are so great and so similar in a lot of ways. The fact that they run the Jingle Jam and GDQ, undeniably the biggest charity events in gaming just shows how generous and awesome both communities are.

    If you think about it, there is something else quite significant about the Boba skip.
    It's a kind of skip that only a casual player can find as an experienced player wouldn't normally randomly do something like that, unless they were specifically glitch hunting, but even then it's unlikely they'd try something like this on that specific door.
    So while not entirely impossible, it is extremely likely that this skip would've never been found without a rookie player recording their playthrough. Most casuals do not record everything they play and wouldn't necessarily know the significance of finding something like this as they're not speedrunners.
    This makes you think, just how many significant skips are found and never recorded and spread?

    this is so wholesome, i often see outsiders reffer to speed runners as snobby elitists that are up themselves constantly, but this throws that entire stigma out through the door (pun intended). the fact yall took her under your wing and treated her as an equal despite getting it as a complete fluke on her first playthrough and all worked as a team to make this reliably possible is so wholesome. welldone to everyone involved. im no speed runner and dont fully understand the appeal behind it, but i hope you awesome people have fun and i wish you all the best in your future runs

      I didn't elaborate further in the video, but Kojima retweeting it was a really big moment for speedrunners. Often when there's something to celebrate in speedrunning, there's always those negative comments about "oh you're just glitching your way through, that's not right" or "you shouldn't do this and play as the developer intended". Having Kojima show support for speedrunning like this really meant a lot to us.

    I love how it really takes a whole community to do this. We have people who discover the bugs through creative endeavor, we have theory-crafters who understand the operation of a game and explain the mechanics, we have testers who evaluate different platforms and strategies, and we have skilled practitioners who put the final recipe together. Each person has different skills, and each person is necessary. Even if one isn't particularly good at making records, they still participate by e.g. testing all of the other doors in the game. It's really marvelous and wholesome to watch a group of people collaborate toward a common goal with such effortless efficiency.

    The speedrun community needed Boba.
    She was new to the game so she was absolutely sure that the tower section cannot be real because she died there several times. She had enough of running this tower and couldn't believe Otacons Codec Speach.
    And as she was new she wiggled around at that door to get through and by a one in a million accident trying it there, she went through. Making something noone even considered.

    • @StreetwizeJJ2
      @StreetwizeJJ2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Semantics, but some categories had to reroute initially for the SOCOM. Once they figured out ways to use it with the routes they had prior, it ultimately became the same run, but with a difficulty spike cut out that nobody would miss.
      I get the point you're trying to make, that every single category benefits from it, which is indeed awesome.

    Someone should tell Boba that not only is naming skips after the person who found it a common practice, naming skips after people who had _nothing to do with the skip at all_ is also common. A good example is "Snow Dram" from Mario Odyssey, where the guy who found a particularly difficult trick jump named the skip after Dram15, a runner who found a completely different skip and insisted that it _not be named after him._ Not only did the community name the skip he found "Dram Skip," they named a few other skips after him just as a joke.

    I love watching people speedrun! I have never seen any Metal Gear Solid game in my life and frankly, don't really care about it. I was just watching a video from Anthony Padilla interviewing speedrunners Smallant and Pointcrow, and in the comment someone was talking about them remembering the Boba Skip, so I looked it up on youtube and found this video. Its amazing how fast the mgs speedrunning community managed to replicate it, and awesome to see the traction you gained from being the first person to do a sub 30.
    A lot of rambling from me but I wanted to thank you for the video, very entertaining! I'll check out some other vids and your stream sometime

    The old strategy for the "staircase frozen door" was to attach C-4 directly on the frozen door, and as long as you have the Level 6 card, the explosion unfreezes the door and it opens.
    However, you're more likely to incur damage and not survive while affixing the explosives to the door on any difficulty higher than "Easy".
    But the fact that glitches can still be found in a two-decade old game, I say Bravo! And Boba, you deserve all the credit for becoming a meme within a meme!

      Prolly not tbh, Salt has stated that he isn't very familiar with games outside of old school Nintendo and Punch Out and that he doesn't like to venture too far out of his comfort zone, there's a much better chance that Speed Docs or Ricky would do one as they usually cover playstation speedruns

    When i was young in the early 2000's i used to finish MGS at least 3 times every weekend.
    Remember that the WR was around 2 and a half hours when the vent glitch was discovered, it changed the game forever.
    It took a while to people discover the commtower broken stairs glitch.
    And boba skip is a great add to that hall of fame.

Was a really surprising moment for anyone who even casually follows speedrunning and even for those who don't. This event was mentioned again in karl's latest video so wanted to know how far this skip helped. Your video sums it up perfectly and was very well made. Keep the work up dude hope you get the views you deserve.

    After the boba skip I can not use stinger to fight hind D, how do you solve this?

    • @NickRPGreen
      @NickRPGreen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Boba Skip itself isn't responsible for that. If you don't have the Stinger, that means you missed picking it up in the small room after the Boba Skip. If you picked it up but have 0/0 ammo, that means you skipped Sniper Wolf 1, as the rank up after her fight is what unlocks the use of the Stinger.
      If it's the latter, you're speedrunning Any% and did the vent skip in the Cell. You'll need to skip the Hind D fight as well, which has different methods depending whether you're playing PC or Console. Best suggestion would be to check out the speedrunning wiki, though I'm happy to direct you further if you can advise more about what kind of run you're doing: www.metalgearspeedrunners.com/wiki/doku.php?id=metal_gear_solid

      @@NickRPGreen thank you so much, I did do the vent skip yeah, so I’m unable to use stinger. Been looking for ways to skip the hind d, I saw one video where one glitched the door and went straight to wolf 2 but I have no idea how..

    • @NickRPGreen
      @NickRPGreen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@leonschepers9022 That's the PC method you're describing. If that's the version you're playing, you want to look into the God Mode Exploit (GME). If you're on Console, you have to do what's called the Weapon Glitch and some other funky stuff. I've never actually done a Console speedrun so I'm not the best person to advise.

      Probably, but discovery doesn't mean much if nobody knows or can replicate it, most major discoveries in history are not "First time someone ever observed event", they're the first time someone recorded it in a way that is shared, in a way that can be understood, reproduced or comprehended
