    This sprayer works great. You do need to clean it thoroughly with water if your using water based paint (latex) and mineral spirits if using an oil based paint. (Same level of cleaning as the Graco|Titan models). You do need to fill the pump mechanism with pump storage oil after cleaning and ready for storage (same as a Graco|Titan model). You can prime this unit with water then switch to paint if your trying to conserve or limit wasted paint. You DO NOT have to thin regular latex ceiling or wall paint, but you should thin "all in one" (primer & paint combo or "one coat coverage" branded paints) as these are thicker and will require max pressure to provide average coverage. (Max pressure = max over spray and quick consumption (over coverage) of paint sprayed). You want to operate this unit at the lowest pressure possible required to produce a clean 'fan' of sprayed paint for best performance, max paint yield, and minimum over spray. You WILL test your fan pattern on one of the MANY scraps of cardboard you have at the ready to prevent over spray on your brick foundation, wood deck, window screens, and small children running amok cause Mom went to get her nails done. Pay close attention to the amount of paint in your feed bucket. Add often. You don't want to draw paint down, lose suction, and have to re-prime Midway through your project. You WILL keep your paint in the shade AND covered at all times. You CAN spray with the tip that comes with the unit, but you're going to go to the big box stores to buy pump oil for storage, an extra 50' hose, 2 x 2 packs of spray gun filters (they're cheap and say Graco on the packaging), two Chinese crescent wrenches for disassembly and reassembly of the spray wand for cleaning, so just go ahead and buy a 515 tip while you're there. (A whip hose is also a fine investment but I digress.) If you paint till you run out of paint, switch to water for cleanup. If you still have prime and are done painting, switch to water, turn unit off, release pressure on gun aimed in source bucket, remove nozzle and tip, power on, and use pump to push remaining paint in hose into source paint can. When it starts pumping water, release trigger, aim sprayer in waste bucket, and pump water till all but clear. It will never be 100% clear as filter in gun handle has to be cleaned (replaced with one of 4 purchased earlier?) as well as rest of spray gun, but get it 90% clear and then focus on cleaning suction hose, suction hose filter, and the spray gun. If you need to change colors, you can without cleaning spray gun, but cycle a minutes worth of paint into source before you start painting again. Clean the gun when your done - not tomorrow. Take your time, use the lowest pressure possible, and remember to compliment Mom on her nails. Be sure and lube pump with oil for storage (instructions on bottle) so that the sprayer will prime next weekend when you help your neighbor paint his project. Great sprayer for the money, and requires the EXACT same cleanup time as ones double the price. You will know you're doing it right when time spent painting is about a quarter of overall time spent prepping, masking, and cleanup compared to actual spray time. Take your time. Mom might just "scratch your back" later when she see's the awesome job you've done! (Tip - hide receipts from Harbor Freight and big box stores).

      I have a one story. I think the highest point is about 15 feet. Except, a couple small gables in the front. Do you think I can skip buying the extra 50ft hose, if I just roll those gables?

    I've been using mine for staining a LOT of a large fence. Got about 10 hours on it already. Agree with the change of tip size. The absolute key to any sprayer using soap and water for cleanup is to make sure not to store it with water anywhere in the system. The 'recommended' Grayco Pump Armor is NOT necessary. Instead, use any kind of automotive anti-freeze. It's cheap and coats all the parts inside with an anti corrosive. Mix it down to 50/50 if you want. After hose is clear from cleanup, disconnect that and the gun. Prime with anti-freeze then switch to spray. As soon as you see it coming out, shut it down. That's it.
    Also recommend taking the gun completely apart - clean really good with soap and water. Let it dry or force compressed air thru all parts of the gun. As you put it back together, I use WD-40 and squirt it everywhere -- inside, all parts, tip, spray needle, screen filter, trigger - everywhere. Then store in a Ziploc bag with a final spray of WD-40 and seal the bag.
    And, yes, this is a good sprayer for the price -- I've had zero issues with mine. When I'm done with it (even for just a couple of days) I'll 'pickle' it as above. All hoses look brand new after each use -- takes less than an hour to fully clean it for short or long term storage.

      avflyguy you're going above and beyond. Mines been used heavily, kept in the back of my truck, never taken apart and oiled, stored with water. I got the warranty so I can use and abuse her for efficiency. Takes 5 min to clean out. Never had an issue and have cleaned the filters no more than 5 times.

    imthe victorr The sprayer's pump should have storage fluid in it to protect the pump from corrosion. You don't want to mix that fluid with the paint, hence the reason he primed into a seperate waste bucket. To minimize paint waste you can first prime flush it out with water, and then you can prime into a waste bucket just until it turns from water to paint. Then flip the hose over to your paint bucket to prime the pump some more for 30 seconds so any remaining air bubbles are flushed out.
    I used to have an Airlessco LP450, which is nearly identical in stats to this sprayer, though built more beefy for daily professional abuse. This Krause and Becker sprayer should be fine for occasional homeowner projects as long as it isn't abused. Got rid of that expensive Airlessco because it just sat around for years, and then of course, a few years later a new project creeps up on me. lol
    The Airlessco LP450 also came with a 517 tip, and had the same fingering on the edges of the pattern as I saw in another video about this sprayer, no matter what you set the pressure at. The edge fingering could be minimized with careful pressure adjustment, but never quite went away entirely. A quality 515 tip is ideal for this machine's power level. A 211 will do well for when you need a narrow fan pattern. The extra $50 for those two tip sizes is worth it, imo.

    We just bought this paint sprayer yesterday and put it to good use just now painting a ceiling. Great deal... I thought? Until just now while we're trying to clean it. We're having a hard time pulling out the filter from the paint sprayer nozzle. The nut was loosened. We just can't pull out the piece. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

      Won't be of help to you 5 months later, but for others, unscrew the spray gun head from the handle before ever using it, pop out the filter, rinse it with water, then put it back together. The Airlessco I once had had the same issue with it's gun's filter the first time I cleaned it. That may prevent the problem.

    I tried to use to paint 3 interior rooms of different colors.. my observations:
    1.) fittings must be wrench tight, not just hand tightened. paint sprayed all over feom machine and handle
    2.) unless you're using a 5 gallon container, you waste a lot of paint during priming. The rooms only required 1 gallon each, so I lost about 25%
    3.) paint feed can only suction paint to about 3 inches in the can. The unit cannot siphon out all of the paint. Thst, coupled with issue #2 meant I only had half a can. Also given the waste from the paint mist, the bottom line is thst I didn't have enough paint to complete the room. I'd need about 3 cans to work comfortably, especially of I'm considering a second coat.
    4.) the cleaning process from room to room would have been a pain and time consuming to get it flushed out.
    5.) the masking process took most of my effort to get the rooms ready.
    on the plus side, what I was able to put on the wall was perfect, no streaks.
    Ultimately, I went back to rollers, which wasn't bad actually, since I did so much masking, I was able to aggresively and quickly paint without worries.
    This machine is best fit for big jobs. I plan to paint my basement down the road, and I think it will be more useful in that case. I will keep it

  • @eallanboggs
    @eallanboggs 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bought it too It's good, but you have flush, flush, flush when done. Flush and clean EVERYTHING. This includes the Final Filter in the gun handle. Clean the nozzle and tip and gun too. The final filter can goin the wrong way. The paint goes from the outer screen to the hole in the top then to the nozzle. You blow air into the final filter If air goes through you have it upside down. Turn it over and put the gun together. The instructions don't mention this so I put it in upside down the first time. It is hard not to waste some of the paint in the hose when you finish. I tried to run the gun till no more came out, but I knew there was more in there which I didn't want to waste if I could help it. You then prime with water and switch to PAINT. The remaining paint will come out into the paint bucket, but you have to watch closely for it to change to water so you don't get water into your paint.

    Was able to pick this up for $149.99 harbor freight. You recommend getting extended warranty? 1yr@$20 or 2yr@$36.

    • @CmdrGendoIkari
      @CmdrGendoIkari 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      $36 is near half the average cost of renting an airless sprayer for a day. If you envision 3 or more seperate day projects of spraying, then it at least paid for itself versus renting one, plus you don't have the time constraint of a rental. However, given how adamant they are in the instruction manual and label on the machine about cleaning out the unit right after use, the steel piston head in the pump must not be stainless grade steel, so don't leave paint in it overnight.

    • @CmdrGendoIkari
      @CmdrGendoIkari 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      lien302 Yeah, HF is always changing the 'sale price' every few weeks. With one of those coupons it can be had for that at certain times. I paid a few bucks more. No biggie.
      It has performed just fine on several projects now. Paid for itself versus renting one, so all is good. It performs pretty much like Airlessco's entry level LP450 model I used to have. It's not overbuilt like that thing for extended heavy use spraying 1,000+ gallons before the pump would need rebuilt, but it sprays just as well. Home owners doing occasional projects shouldn't have any problems with this Krause & Becker model as long as they follow the instructions.

    Great video - I wish mine worked as well! No problem priming, got it cleaned and ready to rock, then the pump would not produce enough pressure to atomize the exterior latex paint I was using on the job. I guess that's the problem with HF - poor quality control. I wasted 5-6 hrs. over two days.

    Couldnt you have primed it with the same bucket you were pumping the paint out of? I dont see why you need two buckets. Also I see that this unit has a rather short gun. Some other ones i see online are 18" long.

    • @eslteacherspix
      @eslteacherspix 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL a reply 6 years later! The reason you need 2 buckets is to switch from water cleaning the line to paint. You don't want to thin out your paint. It makes things much easier to have 2 buckets. Also see how he was spraying onto his lawn? When the tip jams you reverse it to flush out the impurity and much easier to do that into a second bucket. The 18 inch long "gun" is actually a tip extension, great for using under the eaves and extending your reach when spraying!

  • @erth64net
    @erth64net 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for such a wonderfully well done review, and overview of the priming/starting procedures.
    What's the best way to cleanup after a job though - should we be running a paint thinner flush through it?

    • @eslteacherspix
      @eslteacherspix 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes if you are using oil based paints, but for latex, hot soapy water will work just fine. And if you suck up a little vegetable oil at the end, it lubricates the suction pump and makes it easier to get it to prime right up next year after storage

    I used this once and it worked OK. The next time it just abruptly stopped when I was priming so I could clear out the storage fluids. It was out of warranty and I traced it to the pressure switch. What a cheap piece of junk. The pin that presses against the spring to turn the pump off was jammed in its tunnel and stayed in the off position. I had to use a punch to un-stick it. I put it back together, it started leaking because the seals likely cannot be reused. it didn't matter the pin got stuck again and the unit was permanently off.
    There are NO REPLACEMENT PARTS for this unit. It will try to see what I can do to make the switch work and seal off the switch.

      +Corey Smith Yeah, I have done that for their cheap grinders. I found a Graco switch on Ebay. That switch worked. I just had to change the electrical connection by splicing the old one in. All the Harbor Freight fluid fittings are US tapered pipe fitting and not metric.

    Most things especially this sprayer from Harbor Freight are not very reliable. But if your going to buy a sprayer then might as well buy a good one so later when you dont need it you can sell it right after.

      Jason Perez if it breaks they replace it for free, if nothing is wrong with it, they charge a restocking fee.. they don't want peiple to "rent" their tools..a few have painted their houses and returned the sprayer in 3 days in perfect condition.

      Lisa Wade if you're doing 4 exteriors a week, you already know you're going to need more than one pump or a big boy with multiple hoses.
