I’ve been wearing shirt stays every work day for years now. Straight stays crossed around each leg is by far the best solution. The stays are close to your leg at all times. Y-shaped stays stick out, no matter how you wear them. I wasted my money by purchasing some KK&J Y-shaped stays based on TH-cam reviews telling me that they’re superior. Don’t make the same mistake as me. I’m still wearing a 3 year old set of straight stays from Sharp & Dapper. Stainless steel collar stays can be bought crazy cheap from eBay with magnets. Spending big cash on something like that just seems a little blowhard to me. Just my opinion though and if that type of thing suits you then I wish you all the best!
The video overall is of high quality as usual, but I have to give my two cents regarding straight shirt stays. Like Preston, I too favor the Y-style shirt stays (from KK&Jay). Before the Y-style, however, I wore straight shirt stays (from Sharper&Dapper). Yes, the straight shirt stays is more complex, but because it distributes the pressure more evenly on both your shirt and your socks, it creates less damage over time on your garments. When worn properly, the straight shirt stays will cross your legs (that is, the back of your shirt will connect to the front of your socks and the front of your shirt will connect to the back of your socks) and stay hidden just like the Y-style. The four anchor points will pull evenly on the garments, thus making the garments less likely to be fatigued (a more prominent drawback on the Y-style). Other than this one advantage, both styles work. In the end, I choose convenience over better garment care. But one should not disregard the straight shirt stays outright; instead, try it for yourself and judge the result on your own terms.
To be honest no matter how tailored your shirt is, if you need to reach to back seat ofnyour car to grab something, if you need to raise your arms to get something from a shelf you shirt will get untucked eventually. If it’s tailored and with small armholes it will take more triews but eventually the muffin top will show. That’s when the shirt stays shine.
@mxt mxt but thats just the point. I am often in a tuxedo or formal White Tie for concerts, societal functions, and theatrical performances. I even have a shirt that has been well tailored for me. When you're someone who often is in times where they are busy running around while dressed and in public, it helps to have a way to keep your shirt tucked, while moving, while in polite company
As a corrections officer who is conscious of style, I am familiar with the infamous rubber belt. It is effective for keeping my shirt tucked in but I'm fighting with it the entire shift to keep it below my pants belt. For that reason, I'm gonna try KK&J shirt stays, I've heard Aaron and Antonio both speak very highly of them, so they must be at least worth a shot
I wear collar stays and shirt stays every day. I have also used paper clips at times with very satisfactory results! Haha! I stopped wearing the stirrup style shirt stays and now opt for the around the thigh stays. IF you're going to wear Y style, stirrup style, or "straight" styles, make sure you give them a turn around your leg so the band does not "print" on the material of your trousers. Nothing gives away a shirt stay faster than the band leaving a knife edge imprint down the leg of your trousers.
I've never had a magnet come loose from my collar stays at work. The only time I've dropped one was when adjusting the collar while getting dressed. I highly recommend them. Thanks for another helpful review.
Hey there, another great video gentlemen. I am still working on my style and don't have the funds to do it right instantly, but these guides are still very entertaining and provide useful knowledge. Also, you really made tons of progress Preston, you speak freely and unstressed, keeps getting better with every video.
16:14 You guys made me laugh out loud so much! Keep it up! The interspersed humour isn't new but it is something I really appreciate. Always love the content, thank you GG.
Jesus, Preston is the perfect addition to the Gentleman's Gazette. It's the perfect system of checks and balances. Perhaps the government could learn from this . . . I don't wear shirt stay, but they're definitely going on my Christmas wish list. Currently, I do wear sock garters, influenced from watching Bing Crosby in White Christmas. I have a few that I rotate through to help them last longer, but honestly after the first two minutes of wearing them, I no longer felt them. All I feel is my socks right where they should be! Great video!
Spencer Townsend If you’re asking for shirt stays i’d go for fancy boy ones, i got mine a year ago and they’re doing great. Plus if you get a couple pairs you can do the same thing and i don’t know how long they’ll last!
Personally I use the shirt stays from Sharp & Dapper London. They are handmade and great quality. I like their Y+ styles which has three clips for the shirt and one for the sock. That way the tension is spread even more and the shirt stays tucked even better than with a normal Y-styles. For the slim man with no tummy I can only recommend them.
Shirt Stays are uncomfortable. However, I politely disagree with Svens assessment they are unnecessary. If one is slowly building a new wardrobe, or in the middle of losing weight and getting in shape, your shirts will begin to fit differently until you settle into your “new body”. Working in an office at a federal agency, and until I hit my desired weight and shape, I think I’ll be forced to use them to keep myself from looking too sloppy. In short, I agree with the presenters opinion.
Soy de Perú, gracias por el video. Definitivamente compraré esos 2 productos ya que soy profesor y mi camisa sufre mucho las consecuencias cuando alzo los brazos o me agacho...
I certainly have cut up some old gift cards to get more collar stays! I bought a Y shirt stay but stopped using it after getting some well tailored shirts now.
I use stirrup style shirt stays. I think they are great, however I do not wear them over my socks, but under. They are then invisible to the public when I sit. They are not a bother to my feet.
I don’t know. Wore shirt stays twice in the past few times I’ve dressed up. I’m a wedding photographer so I’m moving and carrying and reaching overhead quite a lot during the course of a day. So far I’m sold. I use a ‘y’ style and they are an absolute game changer. I don’t retuck once during what sometimes is a 15 hr day. If’n I worked in an office where all I had to worry about is pushing paper & pencils, I may feel different….
I got a box of stainless steel collar stays from my partner 5 years ago. I've never needed to buy any since then. If a shirt ever comes with a plastic stay, I throw them out immediately :P
Great help - however, I was looking for advice on how long the shirt stay should be - e.g., flush with top of the collar stay’s pocket or 1/4 or 1/2 inch past the top of that packet? Thanking you in advance -
I'm a big fan of shirt stays. The ones from reputable ebay sellers are perfectly fine. No need for fancy ones. All my shirts are fit me perfectly but they will come untucked when you move no matter what.
Collar stays are must for shirts that don't have something like a button collar, and I've found that safety pins work a little better than paper clips in a pinch due to the extra weight.
finally understood how collar stay works. didnt know there is such a thing moments ago btw. (im female and envious. shirt/blouse or other collar is never working for me. need scarfs to balance, which is such a pain when you have to pack and travel.)
Recently got a free set of 3 pairs of Stainless collar stays from a local tailor shop. I use them in the few shirts I have with removable stays, and they work great. The plastic ones that come with most retail shirts do warp after a while. The only frustrating thing is that some shirts have wider pockets in the collar, and don't fit the metal stays I have. I do wish there was an industry standard that everyone stuck to. I'm not a fan of shirt stays, as the thought of elastic straps in my pants whe sitting at my desk all day would really be annoying.
the dry cleaner returned a couple of collar stays when I got my shirt dry cleaned. It was a new shirt and I only worn it once. The collar stays looked like tiny slats from picket fences. I googled "tiny plastic slats" and here I am. haha
I use collar stays - and preferably not plastic ones. I would not, if paid, use a shirt-stay of any description. I wear fairly high-waisted trousers, and shirts that are long enough to avoid flapping about the waist. I don't need to look like a Guardsman or marine on parade, after all.
I don’t use collar stays but I use a product called Stiff Collar Stay It does the same thing but props your collar up nice and high. I think it is even better than the Million Dollar Collar. I used to do the 3m double sided tape thing but the Stiff Collar Stay is by far better. You should do a review in that. I have cheap Y shirt stays but rarely use them. I end up getting my shirts altered to fit my waist better.
Hi! Are collar stays (plastic and metal) flexible at all? I want to use then for another reason besides what they are used for. I need flexibility. thanks!
Hmmm didn’t know this. Thanks for sharing. Don’t metal collar stays set off metal detectors at airports? I use pants suspenders and find that it keep my pants up and doesn’t pull my shirt up.
This isn't a criticism as much as it is a note. Your turning at the end to show your outfit always looks very stiff and forced. If you have a wellness problem that prevents free movement, I am sorry to point it out. If not consider practicing the motion. Watching some of Sven's videos would be a good idea. He has a very casual air about his turns. Great video though. Keep it up.
the shirt stays look like torture devices, I can't imagine being comfortable all day while wearing them. It's much better to have your tailor make some button holes on the sides of your shirt and stitch buttons inside the trousers a bit below the waste
Vielen Dank
I wear both these items. I wanna ask you 2 things: 1) what happened to the cardigan waistband? 2) how about opting for slimmer, tailored pants with a shorter break?
"if you don't have the budget for a closet full of custom shirts, or don't want to get rid of shirts you like" Some of us have measurements that go up and down a couple of sizes regularly. I doubt I could buy truly well fitting shirts fast enough...
Getting shirts made specific to your size actually is cheaper than I thought it would be. For me buying a shirt was always a compromise because I have the neck of a bull. If I get the right size for my body to fit my collar will strangle me and if I get the collar the shirt is too big and I pay easily 60 to 80€. I naturally thought of the solution of getting it made to fit me. But then I thought it gets super expensive and never did that. But getting me one costom made cost depending on the fabric not too much more than ready made. Sometimes it's even cheaper. Doesn't have a name on it though.
I do have collar stays, made of mother of pearl but I would never wear shirt stays. It is unnecessary if you have the right length of dress shirt. The shirt has to be a little bit longer so it will stay tucked in. Wondering how Charles Tywritt shirts fit you as they are very generous cut. You look pretty thin.
On the one hand, great video, really thorough as usual. On the other hand: collar stays, surely you are talking the patently obvious and we can all work them out for ourselves. Also if you are like me you will soon and easily accumulate a variety of collar stays so will always have some spare
I just bought underwear from Charles Tyrwhitt, awesome brand... high/good quality underwear, not too cheap not too expensive. Classic Timeless+Stylish styles. 100% Cotton. Comfortable.
I never use shirt stays because I don't have access to it, and most of my shirts are relatively good fitting anyway. I also only use the plastic collar stays that came with the shirt, even my oldest shirt didn't gave up its collar stiffness, so I have not yet to see if it's necessary for me.
I’ll disagree on shirt stays, I move around a lot and does not matter OTR, MTO or bespoke, belt or suspender, undershirt or not, my shirts always become some form of muffin too and it drives me absolutely insane; therefore pant stays are a must. Also the belt style stay was such a waste of $$$
20min on collar stays - that is why I subscribed: long, quality, detail.
