When I was in basic training, our drill sergeant made us buy shirt tail garters for our dress uniforms. Everyone I've ever served with in the military used them and I've never thought much about it. I just thought that's what everyone did with dress clothes, but it seems to be more of a military thing. I still use them and they work great.
Shirt stays are the best. Whenever I go to a wedding I wear them. Whenever I want to look extra good I wear them. Ya they feel odd at first but you get used to them so fast. You will look so good with these. I'm sure I started wearing these from Brock's suggestion back in 2014-18.
What you told at the end is the perfect solution for anyone who feels uncomfortable with shirt stays, buy longer shirts and tuck it just a little bit and make a big crease so that it shadows your belt this way you'll look clean/have more casual look in formals and will remain at place if you somehow lift you hands.
Hearing you say it’s "not that serious" was a really helpful reminder for me. I was nitpicky about the length of my pants for whatever shoe I was wearing. It bothered me even when I was taking something as small as a 20 minute walk. …Now that I think about it, I don’t see much people during those walks anyways. 😂 This video was a good reminder that as long as I put in effort with what I have, my outfit doesn’t have to be completely perfect.
I came here searching for a nice clean tucked fit as a woman. I definitely need to look into the solution both the garter and the sock. I wear trousers and skirts and love to tuck in my blouse or tops. Thank you for the honesty.
I have two shirt stays gadgets that I use: One that connects to my socks and another one that just wraps around my thighs. Both work great, while the latter is great for the rare occasions where I wear shorts. Nothing else before has worked for me, but shirt stays are great.
The shirt stays I wear are individual bands, instead of the "Y" style. The front tails attach to the outside of my socks, and the back tails attach to the inside. I've found the rubber button doesn't always stay on my socks, so I use small coins (like pennies or dimes) to keep the lower ends attached. The best part about them is that all one needs to do to "re-tuck" the shirt, is to give the waistband of the trousers a little shimmy!
Great informative video! I would like to add one thing: if a shirt has armholes that match your arm size, it will stay tucked in and be more comfortable.
Great video as always Brock! I used to wear garters for the longest time. If you can get your shirts tailored with a slightly higher arm hole then the shirt untuck issue is greatly minimized. Thoughts?
When using shirt stays with over-the-calf socks, I just fold the socks over by a few inches and it works out great. Also, I had a shoe/leather repair shop shorten my shirt stays since I’m on the short side.
Shirts that fit better are the best solution. Not only a relaxed fit, but also a good fit around the arm and armpit, and a good bit of give around the waitsband so that, even if you do pull a bit of fabric when you move your arm, the body has enough give *somewhere* that the tension doesn't pull on your shirt at the waistband at all. If you want to know how relaxed is too relaxed... go watch North by Northwest, and then follow your heart.
Been using the exact amazon leg garters that were flashed on screen (around the thighs) for over 10 years now, same pair even, and they are phenomenal. I actually like them better than the sock versions because they tend to be more flattering and more comfortable while sitting down (think bend at knee). Also, the thigh versions are more tight to your body, so they are never noticeable visually, whereas the sock variants I've had comments on from people wondering what the big line down my leg was (definitely depends on specific pant cut and material). Either way though, they are both 10x better than not wearing them, and you can leave the house confident that your shirt will be tucked in and flattering all day! Edit: I should add that they also will take a few wears to get used to, and to figure out exactly where on your shirt you should clip them for the most flattering fit. But persevere, and it'll be well worth the effort.
I switched from full length socks to shirt stays over to thigh to shirt. Results are pretty good. NGL both are a pain if you need to go on business travel in terms of airport security. I tend to take them off before security and whack 'em back on afterwards.
This problem has something to do with the sleeve width (the arm hole to be precise) also because in ready made shirts they have bigger arm holes to accommodate more sizes in their size range. Since I have known this and started getting shirts with measurements good enough for me, I have tackled this issue better.
Forgot one option: get shirts with smaller armholes. See where the shirt pulls up? That is because the armholes are very large. If they are smaller the arms can move more without pulling up the whole shirt.
As a veteran, a full-length garter works great, however. The mid-length garters work for all situations. Depending on what you are wearing, full-length garters can be noticeable through the pants. Also, half-length.... can’t believe I'm saying this... I agree much easier if you have to use the restroom
just have your tailor "slim fit" the bottom part of your shirt that goes in your pants. I did this with all of my formal dress shirts and it works fine.
For me, the best solution for a typical office day is to wear shirts that fit my torso and double tuck. I like shirt stays but I fear them ruining my shirts and socks in the spots where they attach.
You look great with the silver growing in. #silverfox Please don’t dye it that shoe color black color anymore. If you do decide to dye it, maybe more of a honey brown color (something warmer toned) so it doesn’t wash you out. But please keep it natural, it looks great.
I use the last one. They're good. They work. Con: Undressing in front of a woman for the first time will be embarrassing. I'm married anyway so it doesn't matter. My wife doesn't mind.
when you into fashion you will wear pants with open ancle with slipper socks with loafers... that thing will not work in that case. only for long pants with long socks

I've unironically been waiting my whole life for something like this, thanks Brock.

Agreed, it's the best lightweight solution!

You are such a gem! Thank you, Brock!
Appreciate it, Scott!
@@BrockMcGoff hey Brock for the pants, did you get custom interior buttons or did those pants come with the interior buttons?
@@AM-1- those were custom pants, and the tailor included buttons in case I ever wanted to use suspenders.
8:00 I’ve been wearing KK&Jay shirtail garter for years and it works like a champ.

I'm a swing dancer and I always use NV Holders. It does help that the trousers tend to have higher waists.
Very nice!

i didn't see the using duck tape option
I'll put it on the list for next time.
@@BrockMcGoff redneck technology always works.
Tuck tape

Real simple answer: wear high-rise trousers + shirts that are (1) comfortable in chest and waist with (2) a higher armhole.
Brock would you change much from your minimalism choices you did a few years back?
Apparently the shirt stay belts are to be worn over the last button of your dress shirt. It does a great job of keeping it tucked in.
I switched from full length socks to shirt stays over to thigh to shirt. Results are pretty good.
NGL both are a pain if you need to go on business travel in terms of airport security. I tend to take them off before security and whack 'em back on afterwards.
I swear by the shirt stays. 100% work
I like that you say nobody remembers what you wrote yesterday, but I had blazer and tie on. lol.

That’s true! But you can only go so small before it gets uncomfortable. In general though, I agree.

The shirt stays work great. A little tricky at first to find your perfect set up. Doesn't feel right with skinny pants though.
Very true!
I wore shirt stays, whenever I was in dress uniforms, in my 23 yrs in the military AND when I tuck in a civilian shirt…til today.
As they say, the old ways are often the best.
I just tuck it in my slim tight boxers.
I do need to make adjustments during the day, but it's usually 2-3 times.
just have your tailor "slim fit" the bottom part of your shirt that goes in your pants. I did this with all of my formal dress shirts and it works fine.
Can you pretty please do this but for rolling up sleeves on a dress shirt?!
I use the shirt stays with the stirrup to step in. Fast and easy.
For me, the best solution for a typical office day is to wear shirts that fit my torso and double tuck. I like shirt stays but I fear them ruining my shirts and socks in the spots where they attach.
I just tighten my belt until I can barely breathe and I'm good. Simple.
For the magnets and belt...you're supposed to wear well...a belt.
if you still have the magnets try to use them through the front pockets of the pants and inside the shirt, dunno if it will work or not
As my doctor told me, when I told him,”it hurts when I do this”! …. “Don’t do this “! …… don’t raise your arms above your shoulders!
So tucking annoying 😂
lol probably trade off between slim fit and shirt becoming untuck, if you get a looser fit shirt or shirt that fit well it rarely becomes untuck
True!
Watching this as a guy who wears boots and jeans and can’t get a good tuck for the life of me
What do you do when you wear loafers and no socks?
Wear the thigh to shirt variants
What would my partner think? THEY think... Grandma would like to know how many partners you have?
You look great with the silver growing in. #silverfox Please don’t dye it that shoe color black color anymore. If you do decide to dye it, maybe more of a honey brown color (something warmer toned) so it doesn’t wash you out. But please keep it natural, it looks great.
Thanks! I’ve never dyed my hair black though. It was probably just the lighting in some old videos that made it look dark.
I don’t think putting a magnet is gonna do much if you don’t put it over the pants
👍🏼
What if you wear no show socks?!
I use the last one. They're good. They work.
Con: Undressing in front of a woman for the first time will be embarrassing. I'm married anyway so it doesn't matter. My wife doesn't mind.
Holy smoke! You're 5'6? Thought you'd be at least 5'10 dude. Must be the clothes.
Hello Brock! Do you handle editing in-house or remotely? I'm an editor and would love to discuss, if you’re interested.
I have an editor. Thanks!
@@BrockMcGoff I appreciate your quick response!
Your belt.
The shirt stay belt needs to be hooked to the last button of your shirt... you didn't use it the correct way...
These are the wrong kind of magnets.
I was hoping to see a review of triple magnets or something else.
when you into fashion you will wear pants with open ancle with slipper socks with loafers... that thing will not work in that case. only for long pants with long socks
Wouldn't a belt have helped some of those options?
The trousers I was wearing for most of the video don't have belt loops, just an internal drawstring (which does the same thing).
Solution: waistcoat
Just wear a belt 😂😂
How would that help?
lets be honest who is gonna lift their hands like that when they r wearing a shirt.
I like to be ready for anything, including coffee mugs on the top cabinet in the office break room.
