    Hey Brian! I know what you mean, when we went to Portugal last year it felt overwhelming to try and comment on everything I missed. Then I realized, the core group you have a connection with know you're on vacation, so they'll understand why you've gone radio silent. "The record store where I didn't buy anything." Looking forward to finally meeting in Boston! Remember this; you and Peter Murphy will always have Italy.....

    Glad you found a few worth buying. I usually find it's tricky buying records overseas. The exchange rate problem, and the over-enthusiasm of picking up a souvenir....just for the sake of it. Sale bins are the way to go. I'm doing a trip into Germany and Austria fairly soon, but I'm going to consider the tripping over records stores and any purchases wholly as a bonus, rather than an essential, although had I been driving instead of flying....oh man, things get messy. 💵💸💷💶💴😅

    Great trip Brian. There’s something special about picking up some special finds from special places, a unique set of associations are created whenever you play those records. Boys Next Door is an excellent pick up, worth it just for Shivers - what an amazing track. Brian, good to see that you made it back to your home turf without any major glitches. I'm willing to bet that the Rock Bottom music store is named in honor of Robert Wyatt's classic album, ''Rock Bottom''. There is a store in Austin, Texas called ''End Of An Ear'' which alludes to the title of a different Wyatt album, '' The End Of An Ear''. Lots of VC members, praise their selection. I was expecting to see a King Crimson purchase. Tubeway Army/ Gary Numan was a great score.

    • @EmbryonicRobot
      @EmbryonicRobot  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hey, thanks for the Robert Wyatt trivia. There is a store in Toronto called She Said Boom, which was "named after the song She Said Boom written by Caroline Azar performed by the Toronto band Fifth Column." I didn't know that until I read it on their webpage. I considered one King Crimson record (Music Is Our Friend), but it was a bit pricey. Maybe that was also a mistake 🙂

    Five years ago I went to Italy for the first time, and I couldn't avoid visiting at least a couple record stores, so I did that and brought to Brazil many cd's that I found on sale at Contempo Records (Firenze). Making your own Obi strip is quite a nifty presentation move for a shop. A double peel is a good buy. Its funny how some things are rare elsewhere. That Costello album I've seen here a few times. Its also funny how decent stuff in in the discount bin abroad! I have mixed feelings about low quality recordings being put onto vinyl, but hey if you're a fan and you want it. Great to get something you have been looking for out there 👍

    • @EmbryonicRobot
      @EmbryonicRobot  18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      They certainly went all out with the home-made Obi. The only thing better would be to have made them bilingual. That might be too much to ask for. 🙂 I have avoided bootlegs for years, but with the Smiths and Morrissey, I can be persuaded! Sometimes, buying them is the wrong move. This one, after two listens now, is very interesting and worth the price, I think 👍

    Awesome that you were able to do some shopping while on vacation. Congratulations on finding some records you were looking for. Simple Minds live looks awesome. Peter Murphy record setlist sounds awesome; too bad about the sound quality, but seems like it's still worth hearing. When I lived in Germany in the 1980s some of the record stores displayed just the jacket with the record behind the counter. I was thinking that, for records that they have several copies of it, it saves some space in the bins. You don't have to thumb through 20 copies of the same record. Thanks for showing the records!

It was a free gig and you could only get i if you wore a Smith's T-Shirt. Its quite a small venue, I think he did it because he knew it would get national exposure, he spent the whole gig hugging stage invaders..I'm still looking for The Smiths 'Thank y|our Lucky Stars' bootleg...which I'm starting to think doesnt exist on vinyl..its absolutely phonomenal.

      Oh no, not ABBA. Maybe some day, I will return to Rick Bottom records. Yes, there was Ben Rankins territory in that video!

    Nice selection, Brian! I’d be keen to pick up a copy of Door Door. In general, I don’t buy new releases and prefer digging for 2nd hand records. Florence is such a great city and you‘ve inspired me to take a trip to Rome… still never been. I’m thinking next Easter 🙂

    I never hold back when I see something I want and can afford. If I spend all the money allotted I just don’t go to the other stores. I do like Elvis Costello but I stopped at Imperial Bedroom. I would jump all over the Gary Numan Peel Sessions. When I was in England in the 70’s every store all the album covers were empty and you went to the counter to get the record. Also nothing was shrink wrapped.

      Next time, I will adopt your record shopping strategy. Sometimes, when leave a record behind, you never see it again, which sucks.

    Brian, I have a cassette of that Elvis Costello album. Finding a vinyl copy would be nice. I almost saw Peter Murphy along with Tom Verlaine in the early 1990's in a small club near my house, but plans fell apart at the last minute. Take care, Chris

      Tom Verlaine and Peter Murphy on the same bill would have been amazing! Too bad the plans didn't work out. I had tickets for the last planned Bauhaus tour, and it was cancelled. Bummer!

    Welcone back Brian! Super cool Numan peel sessions. Ive never seen that one before either. Also a fan of Peel sessions. Dont feel too bad I went to Florence and never bought anything actually! I did all my Italian pick ups in Rome. Ironic that you got a Simple Minds live album :) Radiation records is legenday! Great reissues label for rare punk etc.

      @@EmbryonicRobot check out their label releases sometime - you might dig some of the early UK punk, etc. they have reissued. I must have about 6- 7 radiation releases now. Recently got Teenage Jesus and the Jerks (old Lydia Lunch band) on Radiation reissue.

    Your Euro pain is the same as my Canadian/Australian dollar exchange rate pain.
    I always hesitate at the start and then get back home and think about all of the things I picked up and put back down again.
    Love a Peel Session. I think I'm a bit like you with Elvis. A casual fan, but seem to have quite few of his records. Dance This Mess Around on 12"...no! What is it an EP? Boys Next Door is good but a different band to what they became. I think Rowland only plays on one side. B I think. Hurt is now owned by Johnny Cash. better than the original....more country ha, ha! Cheers...SMG

      I guess the AUD - Euro conversion would be even worse. Don't go to Europe. Dance This Mess Around is a comp of 11 big hits! You know, as much as I love Cash's Hurt, I hate the distortion at the end. What were they thinking! It makes me crazy.

      @@EmbryonicRobot Oh, I think I misunderstood what the B52's thing is because I'm sure Dance This Mess Around was a single and probably didn't actually pick up that what you had was a comp. I'm a bit slow sometimes. You're a complicated individual. I like the distortion.

      It's probably Viva Hate, but a really excellent album is the Bona Drag comp, because it pulls together some singles, non-album singles, and b-sides. It is fabulous.

    Hi Brian. I posted a comment here just after you posted your video which has disappeared. It's very annoying when that happens ... I enjoyed your videos from Italy. You picked up some good records, despite problems with the exchange rate. Was Ultravox's John Peel Session EP a victim of the exchange rate? ... There's an Italian reissues record label called Radiation. I'm assuming it's connected to the Radiation record shops? All the best.

    • @EmbryonicRobot
      @EmbryonicRobot  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hi Carl - Radiation Records had quite a few pressings from the Radiation label, so I made that connection. I assume they are related. I considered the Ultravox Peel sessions, but I feel like I was still being mentally oriented to Italy. I forget the price, but later in the trip I wished I had grabbed it. Such is life 🙂
