Nice to see some love being handed out to the Johnny Hodges album .. As the most important soloist and sideman in Duke Ellington's orchestra for nearly 50 years, this '58 session was never going to disappoint. 👍🏼
You are really masterful when discussing JAZZ,just as credible as when your ROCKER Self takes over. It is both generational and Cultural. Organic Grooves!
Love Johnny Hodges. His 1959 collaboration with Gerry Mulligan on Verve is some primo West Coast Jazz. Also, great that you mentioned Tom Wilson. Something for fans of music docs to keep on their radar is a project Singer/Songwriter Marshall Crenshaw has in mid production on Tom Wilson. What a super talented producer Wilson was.
Just wanted to let you know I've been listening to Plumb the last two nights. What a great album! I think listening to one track a night makes it special. It's like a dessert, where a little goes a long way. What I've listen to, so far makes complete sense , just on the cusp of avant-garde, which makes it totally listenable. Thanks for introducing this album to me.
Hello Mazzy you have taught me so much and entertained me so much over the years and its no wonder why your channel is gaining attention and subscribers. Your doing great! Thumbs way up! Peace Love and music Trish
Splendiferous... Good coverage of some of the hottest Jazz RE's out there. I myself haven't taken the Bobby Hutcherson off the turntable, but to flip sides. I was not expect it to be so good. Keep up the good work bro..
Hooray for jazz. Two jazz albums from Ben Webster on my rotation, during nap time are Soulville, and Ben Webster and Associates. Doesn't get any mellower. I also saw Bobby Hutcherson a few times at Keystone Korner in SF.
Love Your Thoughtful “Eclectic Music” Appreciation. Think the words “Moorish Influence” best describe the “Olé” Album. Remember, the Moors influenced Spain 🇪🇸 in music, architecture, culture, etcetera.
Hi Mazzy! In watching this video, I was glad to hear you speak about the legendary rock, pop and jazz producer Tom Wilson. We don’t hear much about him, but all music fans need to know about him.
Big respect to JMI for having the balls to birth an unapologetic statement piece like PLUMB. Albums like this help to move listeners from milk to meat. Thank you, Mazzy, for featuring and appreciating PLUMB!
other way around, Mazzy. Sketches of Spain was the year before Ole. But thanks for the enjoyable content as always. Several albums here I;ve never heard (or even heard of). I definitely need to check out some of those Tom Wilsons.
That there John Coltrane record Ole is one of many my dad made me listen to when I was a kid. Sketches of Spain was another one. Didn't Tom Wilson think The Mothers of Invention were a blues band and when they got in the studio and began doing their thing, Tom freaked out (pun indented) and in actuality Frank produced the record? Is the Plumb record fuzzy like the Beach House Depression Cherry? I did listen to some of Plumb (stream) and it's quite enjoyable.
I'm still cleaning green-blue moss off the jazz albums slumped against damp walls for 25 years. They play fine. Still on schedule for your curated live auction of *The Damp Collection* this Saturday night. Stand by. Stay tuned. Ignore rumors. Don't cancel the press release.
Thanks for the Plum tip. This is a great record with really interesting interplay between Murray and Anger. Your warnings were unnecessary-I had no trouble getting into it at all.
@@mazzysmusic A friend played Ole for me back in the ‘70s. I was looking at the credits and saw the name George Lane. I said, “Isn’t that Eric Dolphy?” My friend said, “It sure sounds like Dolphy!”
The complete Rollins Vanguard date was issued on CD years ago. The “Complete Masters” labeling just comes across like a lot of hype to sell over-priced vinyl.
There was a double LP with some extra tracking the 70s but never complete issues directly from the masters. Not on vinyl. This is the first complete vinyl issue if these shows. You don’t have to buy them, but some folks enjoying listening to entire sets.
I'e got a copy of Sonny Rollins Live at the Village Vanguard and the drum sounds like there is a cardboard box in the kit being hit way too often? is it my ears, my copy or are the drums badly miked?
Thanks for these reviews with the intent of getting new listeners into jazz. It's well done. However, there are some odd comments, specifically regarding Hodges' record. Why would the word or concept of "orchestra scare you [or anyone] away"? Everyone should listen to jazz performed by orchestras; in fact, some of the best jazz is performed by such ensembles. Mazzy then tries to diminish the comparison of this Hodges' record to classical jazz orchestras. While it might be true (or not), why warn against orchestras? It's not good for an appreciation of jazz. Also, calling Webster (and Hodges) a "member(s) of the bebop era" is strange because he/they clearly predate(s) that era in jazz, and they show little resemblance to Parker, Rollins and Gordon (to mention just a few players). An appreciation for jazz is an appreciation for history, and we have to be a little more careful.
Fair question. A segment of music lovers and even some jazz fans don't like the lush string arrangements overlayed on some artists, such as Charlie Parker with Strings or even Gil Evans's arrangement and orchestration of Sketches of Spain. I enjoyed it, but I wanted to let people know that, in Hodges's case, it was not a large orchestra with strings. But has excellent rhythm, reeds, and brass only.
Wouldn't consider Ben Webster a bebop player. He was swing and blues, and damn great. And sorry, I HATE the Hammond B3. The vibes I can get past, not the B3. But that's one guy's taste, doesn't make me right.
MORE JAZZ! Love Jazz!

Love to learn of new music I haven’t heard yet. Thanks Mazzy. I’d love to see an all Blues video if ever possible. 🎶🎵

In the UK = 'Weather Forecast' >> U.S. = 'Weather Report' (from a Scotsman in Japan...! 27 yrs. + >>>). Lovin' the channel, Mazzy.
Insightful review of Ole! Never heard it, but I am headed to get it now!
Great choices, tnx!
Odyssey of Iska was a nice surprise, having never heard it before. I'm really excited for Shorter's "Juju" next month!
It's so good!🤠
It's even better

I do love cover art explorations 🤠

Yes absolutely ✌🏼
Tom Wilson also produced The Animals for a while at MGM.
About the instruments of jazz; tuba is the one for me. Double bass is the “low” voice for me. One of my favorite instruments.
Tuba 😎🤠😆

Ole is also being reissued as Atlantic 75
Yeah. Not a fan of 45s. Especially with a title like Ole where they have to split the song in half.

That is what I thought I said. Coltrane was influenced by Sketches and made Ole the following year.
Well done Mazzy!

Our two favorite Americans over here in Europe: Donald the Fighter and Mazzy the Music (not just vinyl) Apostle!
One is good the other 🤡

Glad you enjoyed it, and it is great, but not only deep jazz fans are watching and listening. 🎼
13:13 Ahh I get that reference
Rhino launched a number of non numbered titles this week.
My word, Plumb's a hard shift !
I'm all for giving an album time to bed in, but I'm not sure many of us have the decades required for this one .. 😏
You only need two hours. Or maybe six.
@@mazzysmusic 😁👍🏼
I've gotta check out that Joel Ross album. People don't like vibes? Yeesh. I've spent SO much time listening to Gary Burton over the years.
“George Lane” on Ole was in fact Eric Dolphy.

Pronounced Don “Wos” not “Wuz”. Hence Was Not Was.
Thank you. Glad I didn’t try to pronounce the name of the Brazilian tune 🤠

JMI Records - Plumb.... only available in the US?
I don’t know. Check their site

Mas.... I just looked it up... Plumb, $149.00 on vinyl on amazon... Nothing on CD yet...
I assume they’ll eventually do a CD? But their main thing is pure analog.
@@mazzysmusic I have Jazz at The Pawnshop... 100% analog recording, analog mix, but transferred to CD. Great sound...

No big deal, but not really sure why you overlooked Ben Webster as a former member of Duke Ellington orchestra in regards to Blues-A-Plenty.
Well it’s not a full history of each artist. I love Ben Webster and like when commenters like you add to the story ✌🏼
Wouldn't consider Ben Webster a bebop player. He was swing and blues, and damn great. And sorry, I HATE the Hammond B3. The vibes I can get past, not the B3. But that's one guy's taste, doesn't make me right.
