    Whenever Morrison writes a story with Superman in it, he always gets Superman right, whether he's a main or supporting character - because he understands Superman.
    People who complain that it's too hard to write Superman stories don't understand what he's about, and what makes him relatable.

  • @EmoPeter2000

    So many people misunderstand Superman. They try to be edgy and say Batman is way cooler and more relatable and, thus, way better.
    The wonder of Superman is that, even with all this power, he chooses to believe in humanity and stick up for us.
    He was iconic in the times of WW2 because he gave everyone hope. Nowadays, no one really knows what true suffering is like and we've forgotten what Superman stands for.

    • @alexferrana3979

      Agree. Superman is a symbol of hope and humanity. He is extremely powerful, but he is holding back so much and it's proves he has an incredible level of self-control and willpower.

      Both Batman and Superman are equally awesome IMO. They're two different sides of the same coin, a symbol of justice for the people who need them most. It's just that their methods are complete opposites and there's lots of potential in examining what motivates them and drives them to fight for the right cause. There's a reason why these two are best buddies.

    He grew up in scotland in the shadow of the british nuclear subs fearing the bomb with his dad who fought in the war, accidently killing commanders, blaming charlie and not joining in all the rape;
    Morrison grew up with stories like that and comics from the usa navy, the people who gave the world the bomb but also gave him superman, batman, animal man, and the doom patrol.

  • @DVAcme
    @DVAcme หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    One aspect of Superman that Morrison nails better than every other Superman writer is his fatherly love for humanity. Superman helps those weaker than him (i.e. EVERYONE), and it's not that no problem is too big for Superman, it's that no problem is TOO SMALL for him. People see the classic image of Superman helping a kitty off a tree and dismiss it as cliche'd and corny, but that's the beauty of it. A being so powerful he can fly through the sun and squeeze coal into diamonds thinks aiding a small defenseless kitty is a worthy investment of his time. Superman consoles the sad and grieving, he scolds criminal like a disappointed dad and appeals to their better nature, he leads his fellow heroes, celebrates their victories and comforts them in their defeats.
    Superman: Up In The Sky, the recent miniseries, illustrates it better than anything I've seen recently. A little girl is kidnapped by an alien menace. In her confinement, she says to herself "I'll be okay, Superman will save me."
    And he did. Cause he's FUCKING SUPERMAN.

  • @johnmcandrew852
    @johnmcandrew852 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Fascinating. It's not just our aspirations - to be able to fix things, to be omni-competent inside of our meek and unassuming real personas - but our weaknesses as well that Superman embodies. The real ones that would persist even if we could "juggle stars." Is that what makes a real, true mythic figure? I mean, none of us could be Herakles or Odysseus, and yet those are our teaching stories. I've always felt that the Superman movies miss something mythic about Superman, an extra depth or dimension that makes him special, but couldn't put my finger on it. But maybe this is it: he's both invulnerable and vulnerable, and both have implications we can relate to.

    The thing that I have finally, at long last, realised and understand now about the whole phenomenon of Superhero Deaths, as opposed to the deaths of the Classical Greek and Roman Heroes and Mytho-Historic figures like Merlin, Nimrod, King Arthur, Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes or Luke Skywalker, and it is this : when a Classical, National or Historical Hero dies, their remains are interred and sealed inside a *Tomb* - that, actually, is the primary qualifying attribute that is absolutely in all instances required attribute for a particular character or figure to have, necessary to meet the definition of what or who a Hero actually is, was, or was not - to be recognised and regarded as a god, a being/entity/spirit must have a temple concecrated in their name, in order that their devotees and supplicants have a Sacred space within a particular, designated and pre-dedicated place to gather in prayer and communion, worship the god in question and make and offer-up sacrificial offerings; likewise, a Hero must have a tomb within a gravesite at which to visit, pay homage and venerate the dead Hero, his memory and his legacy with other fellow pilgrims.
    Superheroes don’t get put into tombs when they die, or are put to sleep in Limbo through neglect and lack of use in new stories - They get dissolved.
    Which explains why, after they are revived and and brought back, they don’t come back the same as they were before - it’s generally that when They try to bring the guy back, the way he had been before, only everybody They try ti bring back, ends up coming back wrong (at least not usually).... Rather, it’s more just that’s they come back *DIFFERENT,* somehow. Or at least, not quite the same as they were before they head died.
    Which is not exaclty an irrational reaction to undergoing a complete reversal of death, followed by bodily resurrection, if you actually give it some serious thought -
    But this is why Pepper, Morgan, Happy and the Avengers put Tony Stark into the lake facing right across from the front porch of his cabin; this is why Batfleck’s Justice League had to submerge Superman’s dead body in the nutrient bath of the Kryptonian Birthing Chamber, along with a photograph of Johnathan Kent and a MotherBoxx and arrange to have the whole solution Superman broth solution struck by a bolt of lightning (of 1.21 JiggaWatts, obviously), at the exact precise instant the MotherBoxx made physical contact with the surface of the dissolved Superman; this is why Phoenix exploded out into The World from beneath the waves of Jamaica Bay and, likewise, the reason why, in order to *undo* consequences of The Dark Phoenix Saga, after Dark Phoenix herself had resolved her own story, in order, if, as you so-desired, your objective was to get the old, pre-Cosmic Jean Grey *back,* and alive, and blame-free of the crimes and genocide of Dark Phoenix, you have to go *BACK* to the original crucible following Dark Phoenix’s re-solution, return to the seabed under Jamacia Bay and see what you can syphon and decant off from this fresh solution and see what can be made, or remade of that.
