I remember being given a copy of Shazam: Power of Hope when it first came out back in 2000. I was only 5 years old, going through chemotherapy, and my parents thought it would cheer me up a little since I liked superheroes. I can't express how impactful it was seeing him visit sick children, feeling as if I was one of them.
Superman: Peace on Earth is truly a timeless masterpiece. It has some of the best quotes from Superman and Jonathan Kent, and of course Ross's art is indescribable stunning. It truly is a respectful honoring of the character and I feel proud to own my copy of it. "I think back to my father. As a farmer, he had a natural understanding for the Earth. I remember him telling me this world is capable of providing for all its creatures. Even now, with so many more people, there exists enough food for everyone. The problem, "Pa used to say, "is people. As far back as we go, we've always had problems with sharing. Seems everyone's too busy holding on to what they've got to care how their neighbors are doing." Pa said it would take a special individual with no personal agenda to make everyone realize what the world has to offer. Someone who could put his own needs aside to help the greater good. I don't pretend to think I am that person, though I have always tried to be there for others. I look upon my powers as a gift, not mine alone but for anyone who needs them. Over the years I've helped as many people as I could. It's not my place to dictate policy for humankind. But perhaps the sight of me fighting hunger on a global scale would inspire others to take action in their own ways. It's certainly an example worth setting." -Superman (Superman: Peace on Earth, 1998)
I also have this copy, I bought it when it came out and am also proud to own it. That scene of Clark sitting in the chair, head down, world weary, white shirt, with the S visible - the opposite of the scene we are used to with him standing proud, head up, ripping the shirt open ready for action. Alex's incredible talent to portray this. Everyone criticises Superman 4 - but the whole point of that film, "quest for peace" - for "peace on earth" - Clark's struggle in trying to decide how much Superman should interfere - this is another personal way we see this. Is Superman the true personality with Clark the disguise, the Son Of Jor-El, bound not to interfere with the unfolding of human history? Or is Clark the real personality, the son of Jonathon Kent, who grew up in Kansas, "about as American as you can get", and Superman just a costume? Dean Cain: "Clark is who I am. Superman is what I can do" . Henry Cavill: "Superman was never real". In Kingdom Come Diana calls him Clark and he ignores it. When she calls him Kal responds. Yet at the end, when everything has been resolved, he is Clark again, at the restaurant, with Diana and Bruce .
I only just found this, and I hope this finds you. My mother hated me reading comics, even after I proved to her back in the 1970s they actually made me MORE literate... So, years later comes the release of Peace On Earth, and this subject had come up again as my copy had arrived through the mail. I gave it to her to read, and urged her to take her time, to look and see how the artwork ties together with the script... At least an hour later, she was just staring off into space with tears streaming from her eyes: she'd never experienced anything like it. Peace On Earth is such a work of beauty and thoughtfulness. Thank you.
I remember the first time i opened an alex ross comic it was just magical and every time i buy them as gifts they always have the same effect on everyone just a wonderful creator. Alex’s version of any character could easily be your favorite version of that timeless character.
Christopher Reeve was my first Superman and so for me will always be the quintessential live action Man of Steel. But Alex's Superman feels definitive and distilled down to his pure essence.
Sash As Filmmaker I could not have said it better. Superman in the 40s is the REAL man of steel, all the other versions of him are just ameliorated versions.
With all due respect to Henry, Dean, Brandon, for their great interpretations, everyone will agree that Christopher Reeve was THE Superman, and it's good to know these other actors acknowledge that and acknowledge they were inspired by him.
One page that stands at the most for me in “peace on earth” is the shot of Clark partially in costume yet still has his glasses on and dress shirt in his lounge chair. This subtly conveys how he is between two worlds and feels the weight of his adopted planet on his shoulders through lighting and body language. His head is down in failure yet is still of a contemplative nature. That image conveys so much about the character and how he handles the low points of his career. He’s not sitting upright, which is another indication that this is not a moment of victory or rest. Alex conveyed a superman emotionally exhausted and dwelling on where he went wrong and why those men stopped him from doing what was a benevolence service to their country as part of his global initiative. It’s one of at least five inspiring depictions of Clark in that story. Alex is always an inspiration for me as an artist and I always look forward to his next project.
Superman is character who potrays peace and hope...why? His parents learn it to him...the people of earth learn it...and he wants peace for the people who want it And Alex Ross know how show it
Andres Anguiano Zuñiga You think Snyder's Superman portrays that Hope ? He does but in a realistic world that has no hope. It takes a bit of development as a person and learning more about us as a race. Henry shows the complexity of Superman. As both Clark Kent and Kal-El.
+Lennie Binale Exactly, Snyder's portrayal of Superman is full of mistakes, but one thing I don't think people are grasping is the fact that he has made the world around him very much a character, and Superman responds to it. He is literally performing god like feats, saving people and they still fear and resent him. Why would anyone be optimistic under those circumstances?
I find Peace on Earth more realistic than the movies because it shows why he wants to help everyone. In the comics, Jonathan shows him that passing on goodness to others is important. Spread your good intentions so that others may learn and grow. Jonathan shows Clark that helping people is a "never ending battle." He enjoys helping people and responds to citizens who appreciate him, whether it be saluting, waving, or smiling. I love my Superman when he is a boyscout. I'm a boyscout in real life, so it makes me relate with him and enjoy seeing him do these things. I think the movies should've captured and explained these feelings more before Justice League. It never really develops Superman into why he becomes who who he is, unless you count him reuniting with family after his death in Justice League, which doesn't really teach him anything anyways. In the earlier movies, Jonathan tells him to conceal his good intentions rather than share them, which I feel is a huge mistake for developing Superman as a character. It's literally the opposite of what Jonathan teaches him in the comics. The movies are definitely not as bad as people say, but they certainly have flaws.
Did any of you read the fricking comic? Superman: Peace on Earth has a realistic world. Various races and not everyone accepts Superman. Does he just gives up the mantle or go to Lois for comfort? No! He figures the best solution and acts. Alex Ross's Superman is FAR better than Snyder's Superman cause Clark Kent had great paternal figures who made him a better man and then a better superhero.
Superman: Peace on Earth is actually my favorite comic of all time. Not only does the art perfectly reflect the feelings in the story, the talents of yourself and Paul Dini bind the soul, humanity, and overall personality with Superman. I personally love it when Superman fights his classic rogues gallery, but when he tries to tackle real world problems, like starvation and passing on good intentions, that's what really makes me want to be Superman. That's about the most inspirational dream I've held on to in my life. As far as I think, you're the most talented and influential Superman artist (and writer) this world has had the fortune of having. I'd get a trade paperback that collaborates of all your Superman stories in one, or a new Superman story of yours, in a heartbeat. I'll take what I've gotten, though. I don't think it can be done better than it already has anyways. Thank you, Mr. Ross.
Superman Peace on Earth is one of my favorite books. My favorite panel is the one where Clark Kent/Superman is sitting in his chair in his Metropolis apartment meditating, almost brooding, over his actions of the previous day. Written wonderfully, drawn beautifully, Peace on Earth to me is the exemplary embodiment of Superman and the standard by which I still hold all Superman movies/comics/etc to.
So many people miss the humility and thoughtfulness of Superman. The intellectual man of steel. You really get a sense of thought and love with this art.
Alex, your Superman design is by far the best that's ever been done. I wish a standalone Superman movie would come out with an actor who looked like this; portraying a slightly older and more mature Clark/Superman. And one that placed a huge emphasis on his character, not just a movie full of fighting.
This is one of the most emotive, both in story as well in art, comic book I ever read. In resume, it is just plain beautiful and should be distribited in schools worldwide.
My favorite line from this video that Alex says is, “This is the classic that will always be.” No matter what’s being done in comics today, you can not take away the “classic that will always be” version of any superhero or anything really. Thank you, Mr Ross for sharing your passion for comics and art with us! You’re an incredible artist and very blessed with a gift!
I have this. My mother, then 70 years old, was sniffy about me at 40 reading such an album... So I passed it to her, and invited her to read it, and to lose herself in the artwork... Hours later, with tears in her eyes and a hitch in her voice, she thanked me for letting her read it. It's a terrific piece of work.
The one thing about Alex's Superman that is spellbinding has nothing to do with the character, I am stunned how he creates a city landscape with essentially watercolors, that to me is mindblowing!
Great point. There have been a few times where I've seen people on the internet boil Ross' art to him dressing up his friends in costumes, and they seem to conveniently forget everything else he paints.
You are a truly talented artist, Mr. Ross. Your rendition of Superman brilliantly captures the true depth of the character, and makes feel like he flesh and bone. Well done.
The degree he describes his work or before he approach a work, is superb that whenever he finishes it and he talks about it, you can feel that he is so happy and satisfied. Each is a labor of love.
I still love the traditional painting heated of the Justice League, and how for the movie they made a live-action version of that with the actors. That's why I bought the special edition of the Justice League Blu-ray from Target as it had the Alex Ross inspired cover of the portraits. He is a brilliant comic artist
The art where superman is lifting the car is exactly portrayed in Batman v Superman when Wally is making a bomb, and you see this shot in Cavil's superman version on the wall newspaper. Epic Snyder!
Alex Ross, if you are reading this message, I hope that you can do an animated project based off of your amazing artwork in the future someday. Would love to see how your characters move and interact through your artworks

I have a ton of marvel and Dc work by you. You yourself are a visionary mastercrafter above the minds of men, an ubermench of la art, We love you . Sincerely ~An Artist from earth.
Excuse me...are you THE Alex Ross? If you are I just found your channel. My wife says that she can't believe that I come with such a complex stories, yet so entertaining and absorbing that she didn't let me stop, even when my baby girl is already asleep, she say I have to start to writing them down (yeah sure..like I have the time). Any how, if is there a reason my brain builds those stories is because the side effect I got from reading your "Kingdom Come" which is my favorite comic book of all times. Thanks for your work...it makes the real world a little bit more enduring..
I love how these characters are so realistically made, they're equal to their cartoon counterparts, buff men to play super heroes and normal heroes just like the early cartoons and comics, these are the types of models for super heroes that i wanted to see being cast to play in DC movies. I never see any hero or super from any movie that his or her body type matches with the old cartoons and comics. That's why i love these drawings.
I LOVE ALL THOSE JUSTICE ACTION FIGURES HE SCULPTED . THEY ARE JUST OUTSTANDING TO LOOK AT 7 INCHES TALL . I HOPE HE CREATES A MARVEL LINE OF FIGURES .. I'M IN LOVE WITH YOUR WORK .I JUST LOOK WITH ASTONISHMENT ..
This is the comic I bring up whenever I hear people say Superman is "boring" or "too good." NO, I say, the struggle to do good is NOT boring, and it's absolutely not impossible for people to identify with someone making that struggle. Even if a character isn't full of anger, pain or bitterness like a Batman or a Wolverine they still struggle, and there is still drama in them, and a lot to learn from.
Alex the master, I remember reading this in my twenties and thinking fuck this time he will bring balance to the planet.... maybe there were some tears involved, maybe.
Alex Ross's SUPERMAN'S FACE IS ACTUALLY ALEX ROSS'S FACE...Same nose ,same jaw. Exact eye distance separation GENIUS...And it only took me 20 years to notice.
BvS had this exact storyline as one of it's plotlines, but if it had more time to breathe or even had been it's own movie, Snyder's Superman would have surpassed Donner's Superman and would've been the best Superman ever put to screen.
These videos are great and I’m a big fan of Alex’s work. Personally though in a comic book I’m not a fan of the original costumes tied with the photo realism.
I remember being given a copy of Shazam: Power of Hope when it first came out back in 2000. I was only 5 years old, going through chemotherapy, and my parents thought it would cheer me up a little since I liked superheroes.

Christopher Cano that's beautiful. I hope you're doing much better than you were then.
Did you make it?
@@redleader6186 of course he did, if he didn't he wouldn't have commented here.
Alex Ross’s art can inspire anyone to draw. The way he uses a pencil and brush, it’s amazing. His art will live on. Now and forever.
He can inspire all of us to draw. None of us will ever be as good as him. But is that not the point of heroes?
@@vinvass2674 how do you know that none of us will be as good as him?

I've always been awestruck by his artwork.
To this day, this is my favorite Superman book ever. It’s one of my favorite books periods if not number one.

Alex Ross gets Superman. Period.

Thank you Alex Ross for being who you are.
When WB gets it together with their DC movies we need to see a Superman film inspired by this Masterpiece.
Loving the longer-format videos, excellent insight into the creative process of a modern master.
Just bought an autographed print set of superman forever, can't wait to get it. Huge fan, you're an amazing artist.

I missed a chance to see Alex’s artwork at a museum in western Massachusetts a few years back. Bummed still.
This looks soooooo clean. I like it.
Alex Ross is the Leonardo DaVinci of comic book art
I have this comic on my lap as we speak, its great!
Great comic. I had that for my birthday
Spectacular! DEFINITIVE Superman!
This is the comic I bring up whenever I hear people say Superman is "boring" or "too good."
NO, I say, the struggle to do good is NOT boring, and it's absolutely not impossible for people to identify with someone making that struggle. Even if a character isn't full of anger, pain or bitterness like a Batman or a Wolverine they still struggle, and there is still drama in them, and a lot to learn from.
Alex the master, I remember reading this in my twenties and thinking fuck this time he will bring balance to the planet.... maybe there were some tears involved, maybe.
my favorite version of Superman
Alex Ross's SUPERMAN'S FACE IS ACTUALLY ALEX ROSS'S FACE...Same nose ,same jaw. Exact eye distance separation GENIUS...And it only took me 20 years to notice.
MI GATO SU GATO never noticed that
BvS had this exact storyline as one of it's plotlines, but if it had more time to breathe or even had been it's own movie, Snyder's Superman would have surpassed Donner's Superman and would've been the best Superman ever put to screen.
Peace on Earth and For All Seasons are the best Superman work since Siegel and Schuster's.
Alex Ross is The God of illustration
great artist ye are, sir
Amazing!
Superbly nice!
O melhor, Alex Ross!
Those Graphic novels that Ross/Dini did were fantastic.
Plzzzzz show us your drawing and painting process.........
MAKE CGI ANIMATION WITH ALEX ROSS ART. I WILL GIVE YOU MY MONEY
The background music makes this video more impactful, what's the genre of the background theme?
I love this.
Holy shit man i love your books
These videos are great and I’m a big fan of Alex’s work. Personally though in a comic book I’m not a fan of the original costumes tied with the photo realism.
Now we need a video of Batman War on Crime
We need a video for each of the 5 remaining tabloid books.
Haha! It doesn't take super-vision to see that coming.
Kingdom Come is so good...
I would love to be able to draw like this. Unfortunately, drawing a stick man is about the limit of my talent, lol.
PEACE ☮️🕊️ on earth 🌍 goodwill to men!
Superman: Paz na Terra
anyone know the music?
I think the only way you could translate movement to that art style would be motion capture
