One of the things I love most about your channel is seeing these older (and newer) revolvers. I like modern, innovative firearms too, but there's just something special and rugged about an all steel wheel gun.
Without a doubt THE most gorgeous and sought after 629 ever produced! The no dash pinned and recessed 629…..from 1979-1981, truly the pinnacle of fine firearm craftsmanship from Smith & Wesson! The Holy Grail is the 4” model like you have (and rarest) followed by the 6”. These guns will soon (if not close to being there now) be the highest priced wheel guns at every major auction house. If you can find one, GET IT!
I love 44 Magnum almost as much as I love 44 Special. My 629-1 is the most accurate and enjoyable handgun I own. Loaded with 44 Special it is an absolute joy to shoot. Even new shooters , who are a little intimidated at first, soon find themselves hooked on shooting it.
I recently got thr 29-10, 4 inch, .44 magnum. Will shoot it when I can afford some ammo. But I got Hogue grips and a Bianchi Cyclone leather holster. Fantastic set up. Great hiking and camping companion. I load it with .44 special Hornady Critical Defense as my home defense load.
What a gorgeous pistol. Pinned barrel, recessed cylinder with full steel back strap tucked between beautiful hand carved grips. That revolver is a keeper. When you are in bear country, this is the bad boy to carry!
I have decided to get this as my first 44 magnum revolver. SW have the best follow up time than any other revolver and less problems in my review findings. Under attack, I will be rapid firing at the target and can't delay as some revolvers require. I plan on using 44 magnum when I'm in the woods only. Woods are not as safe as they use to be. Thank you for this video even if its over 12 years old.
I reload the 44's, and would reload the 44 Mag. Brass is easier and cheaper to get, and you can load the .44 Mag down to .44 Special levels if you want and still have the option of loading full bore Magnum loads. I believe Hickok45 says something similar in the video.
The only thing I don't like about your videos is the fact you make everything look soooooo good! You definitely doing a service to our economy as it encourages a person to go to work to make more money to buy more guns. Keep up the good work.
Just got one today and can't express how excited I am about it even though I own so many guns! Haven't fired it yet and it's already my favorite! Love wheel guns! Thank you for the awesome video!
You can really tell the difference between the .44 mag and the .44 special, at one point I saw the bullet (.44spec) itself flying when the gong was shot, same as with some .45 ACP bullets in other videos. Great video, as always.
A love for the 44Mag grew out my first firearm, a 7.5" Redhawk. Since then a 6" M629 has joined the collection. It too dines well on .433" roundballs flying at 600ish fps, 200gr SWC at 1000 and 240s nearing 1300. Such range!! Shooting those RBs so slow you can see them fly and recoil is fractionally above 22LR.
@@murrayadams6843 I saw a S&W 629-6 stainless steel all original with the shock absorbing heavy duty S&W rubber grips for $800 at a local gun shop just a month ago, also the revolver looked brand new. It caught my eye because I have the exact same model 629-6 which is the exact same gun as in this video except with a 6in barrel instead of the 4in and with rubber grips. The 6in barrel actually makes this gun easier to shoot more accurately. The S&W 629-6 stainless steel with the factory heavy duty rubber shock absorbing grips is the most popular setup of this model and the one most people look for when buying this revolver. The early 629s are a work of art if you like revolvers and my early 629 was my grandfather’s, he’s the one that took me shooting nearly every weekend from the time I was 7yrs old. He did trigger jobs, tuning & repairs of revolvers for customers all over the US for nearly 50yrs. My 629 has the smoothest trigger & action of any revolver I’ve ever held in my hand but my grandfather set the revolver up also. These old S&Ws are known to be very good straight from the factory without trigger jobs or any work done to them straight out the box. My grandfather worked on revolver’s & other firearms for a lot of competition shooters and it usually took 6-9 months to get a full trigger job & tuning but my grandfather put his hands on every single gun that came thru the door of his shop, I helped him for 20yrs but he still double checked everything and shot everything before it left his shop. He & I were the only two people that ever worked at his shop.
Yes. S&W are, "Nice Trigger." And, BTW, only hickok45 can make it look easy. Also, yes, one could load up the .44 special up to .44 mag pressures (in modern firearms). Another great point Mr. hickok45. Thanks for keeping Mr. Keith alive.
@froggergoat, Same thing. Remington developed the cartridge, so the full name is ".44 Remington Magnum"; however, most people just say .44 Magnum. The .40 caliber is actually a ".40 S&W" cartridge, but we usually just call it the .40 caliber.
I buy a gun every 8-12 months. Up until recently, all were semi autos. 3 months ago I picked up a Ruger GP-100. Yesterday I bought a S&W Model 29-3. Next month I plan to buy a .460. These "old timer" guns are so much fun! Unbelievable triggers.
Hickok, you really do have one of the best channels on youtube. This video is so informative and for those of us (like me) who don't own guns, this is possibly the closest we'll ever get to a beautiful piece of history like this. Thanks for the videos!
I love the video! I have had a 4" 629 since 1986, NEVER had a problem with it and it is always fun to shoot. A fine cary gun once you get used to it and I keep 2 speedloaders on my "weak" side. Thank you for a great display of a fine gun.
I own the 629-3 Mountain Gun version of this awesome revolver. Kicks like a Missouri Mule, but boy is it fun to shoot. Only downside: .44 Mag ammo has continued to get more expensive since Hickok made this vid. Great handgun.
Revolvers are more reliable and scarier. Carried on the force and carry now, Have semis but I'll stick with my model 10 or 13 Also carry a LCR 357 If I carried a 44 it be a smith 629 3 inch Barrel
Not related to the 44 magnum as such but did any of the other viewers notice when Hickok shot the first three pieces of steel within the first 30 seconds of the video he had about a 1.5" spread on two of the three targets? Freaking amazing consistency! Sir you are a SHOOTER! Scott
bowshott007 Except it's not mine! :) It's an actual quote off of a tombstone. Can't remember where it is, but if you put that phrase into google images you'll come up with it. Pretty funny.
Your my go to guy anytime I wanna learn something new about firearms and the history behind them I really appreciate everything I have learned from watching you and keep up the great work i love every moment of it your my favorite person on TH-cam
Yep. I thought that that poem about Lester Moore was just Hollywood, made up by the movie producers for "Tombstone." I was IN Tombstone again last week, and I saw the actual grave of Lester Moore. They have the cute poem there, but I discovered that on the original tombstone (board), it said something about dying from four shots from a .44. He was a real guy and was actually shot multiple times with a .44. Hollywood took some liberties with the poetry, though.
+okey dokey To add to this the newer ones have more of a chance of being canted compared to the older pinner versions. I bought a 629-6 and the barrel was canted but I guess that happens every now and then with S&W revolvers besides their performance center ones.
I just started shooting a 44 mag Ruger Redhawk with a 7 1/2 inch barrel. I bought it to hunt with. Also it was about 400 bucks less than a 629 and what I could afford. I have been a Smith fan for a long time and its taking some getting use to the trigger on the Redhawk, but getting it down. really a nice gun. My next 44 will be a 4 inch 629. Thanks for the great videos Hickock. I can't shoot as often as I would like so I get a vicarious thrill watching your videos.
Thanks again Hickok, just now getting into and loving the revolver with my first one.. 686+ 3". Love your mix of sharing your knowledge and Good ol' boy humor! Love it and take care of yourself.
Never had a revolver, least of all would i have thought that I needed a 44. Happy now that I've let your appreciation for these guns tip the scale in favor of buying a 629 :P Thanks
president very nice 44 magnum Smith & Wesson really nice revolver powerful weapon great alot of fun shooting there great excited everyshoot perfict fantastic have nice day karon ****/////
I love my 6 inch 629-4 it's a good gun. It's a 21 year old brand new gun, the previous owner only shot a handful of specials out of it before selling it.
Polishing my new 629 3" right now (well, not this very second!)! Man, I love this revolver so much. Just bought it two days ago, but it is easily in my personal 3-way tie for favorite. It's this one, my Browning BPS 12, and a new old (1997) 38 special. as my favorites. Yep, love tradition and wood grips! As I type this, I'm already planning on Hogue grips for both the .38 and this one. It's like my wife working around the house all day, and then getting elegant and even more beautiful when company comes. The rubber grips will come off and the beautiful stock grips will go on if I want to display them. Polymer? Yes, effective and highly capable, but I don't sit on the sofa watching TH-cam and polishing plastic. Only functional inside clean and lube. Just disappointing to see folks dismissing wheel guns. I'm 60 as of this year, and I stay cutting age, but classic quality is a level of quality that so many have not had a chance to experience it, or just think (erroneously) they are outdated old-school. Thanks for the great video as usual.
As always i like the clips you do... .44 magnum is one of my favorite guns to shoot.. Mine is a 629-3 non fluted cylinder full under lug barrel named the Classic Hunter ... Your holster caught my eye, i have been thinking about a model like yours....
you will never regret the S&W, something that can be passed down to you kids kids kids and it will still have lots of life left in it. .44 mag is way to much fun to shoot.
Love my 629 6 1/2" stainless. 180 grain wadcutter sends a 6"- 10" flame out. Took it an indoor gun range and after 2 rounds the range master asked over the PA, "Ok, who has the shotgun?" Had it 20 years.
amazing how well of a marksman hickok is. I couldn't hope to shoot this well with a decent handgun, and i've receved several marksman medals in the military....
Just bought a (used) 629 at a gun show this past weekend. I took it home and cleaned it up and it's just beautiful. Now if I could just find someone that has some cartridges...
John's camera work is getting really good with that new camera. Watching lead fly and then hit the far gong is amazing. I could see the detail in the grip individually on each notch. I love the sound of Hickok45 on a cold rainy Ky morning shooting fun lead with safety and professional respect of firearms. I have to admit I was drinking coffee watching this and when asked to catch a falling shooter I twitched as if I could reach to left of monitor and give support. I was really concentrating.
Thanks hickok45, one of my more favorite videos, and its a new one too. You are definitely getting very good at this and improving. Its nice to see the amount of effort you guys put in your passion. Keep it up. Love your videos here in Toronto Canada.
I love the holster and ordered one for myself- anatomically the chest/belly is one of the most ergonomic places to carry things.. I have been looking for one for quite some time for my 4" 686, thank you for sharing!
very nice six shooter! I like wood and steel also .thats why when I was looking for a new squirrel gun ,I had too do alot of shopping too find a all steel 22 rimfire hand gun that was all steel .I ended up with a mark III Ruger Hunter and it is a bushy tail buster with a little Bushnell handgun scope.I love Squirrel hunting with it.
Holy close-up. Very nice. I do love these guns too. Just got my SW Classic M29 4"...just love, love, love it. I have a M66 .357 too. These are great guns!
I recently gifted my old s prefix 5" model 27 to my eldest. Have a 1956 k38, a model 24, model 60 and a 686 +. Super Blackhawk and Blackhawk Bisley in .45 Colt. Love the wheel guns!
HICKOK, you are definitely a gunslinger, and your revolvers are damn fine, and the 629 is an excellent brush gun, with the buffalo bores,i shoot a dan Wesson 44 with a 10'' as I like it go to its target,i really enjoy your long shots, you keep giving me hope, nice range
Oh to be in the land of the free! Here in the UK we are not allowed cartridge pistols. Nothing over 6 foot pounds! How I miss my model 29 and 19 and the little 22 ruger auto. Great video.
Cool review Mr. Hickok45 I shot the .44 magnum with hot hand loads at an indoor range. It's like shooting a cannon. It is heavy duty. A great gun for target and hunting. I have a S&W .357 which is a really nice gun and caliber.
I have had this gun for years. Far and away my favorite. The 4 inch barrel creates the perfect balance.
One of the things I love most about your channel is seeing these older (and newer) revolvers.

I love mine, bought it from my uncle who bought it when he was living in Alaska back in 1973, bought it specifically as his bear gun.
Love how you can sometimes see the round flying down range.
Sweet! I love the 629!
I have the 8 3/8" version. I call it "The Beast"!
I love wheelguns!
I have the same one... I used to shoot a LOT with it! But I got OLD and wimpy. I LOVE watching this man shoot!
That gun is a work of art. It really is beautiful!

@Gewehr7 , It's called the Model 629. These came out before the 686 came into existence if memory serves me right.
Just got one today and can't express how excited I am about it even though I own so many guns! Haven't fired it yet and it's already my favorite! Love wheel guns! Thank you for the awesome video!

Hey hickok, what do you mean when you say pinned barrel? Sorry I'm a newbie
+okey dokey To add to this the newer ones have more of a chance of being canted compared to the older pinner versions. I bought a 629-6 and the barrel was canted but I guess that happens every now and then with S&W revolvers besides their performance center ones.
hickok45 that chest rig your wearing where can i get one?

I can actually see the .44 specials in flight on the way to the gong. About 15:26 ish.
0:30 I just love the way the cylinder looks when it's spun like that
Reminds me of the Magnum in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis :)
Never had a revolver, least of all would i have thought that I needed a 44.
Happy now that I've let your appreciation for these guns tip the scale in favor of buying a 629 :P

Revolvers have better Training-Appeal : for sure.
Im definitely get me a 44 magnum 629 with 4 inch barral and 44 magnum 29 with 4 inch barrel.
.357 magnum 500

Gotta tell ya: I am addicted to these videos!! Hickock45 utterly ROCKS....!!!
"Dirty hickok". Make my day.
Haaaa
Bought a 629 3" for my first revolver. Then i found this guy. Hilarious informative channel my guy
"Wood & Steel" - never better!
Don't know if you saw it or not but when you started shooting the specials at the gong, you can actually see the bullets before they make contact!
"IM THROWIN BRASS EVERYWHERE AND I DONT REALLY CARE!"
quote of the year.
Where did you get the holster? Thanks Wes.T
Wes Teseniar yes I would like to know to 👍🏻
It's great to see those big ol' slugs sail through the air to splatter on the gong. One of my favourite things to see in Hickok's videos.
I just got a Bulldog Tuesday Hickock. Why do you have to make me want to get more guns when I don't have the funds???
I love my 6 inch 629-4 it's a good gun. It's a 21 year old brand new gun, the previous owner only shot a handful of specials out of it before selling it.
When I get a revolver it will be a 4inch S&W629.
That or a rugar Redhawk Alaskan for me
I love mine.
Did you get one? I have a pair of 29-2’s 4” nickel plated. 😎
Edit: Just picked up a blued 4” 29-2. Now to find a 4” 629 no dash...
Another great video hickok45.
I need my home range set up like you have, best I've seen.
Love all your videos, keep'em comming !
Lol: "I'm throwing brass everywhere, and I don really care."
2 jars and a box full of .44 and a 629. A damn beautiful sight hickok, damn beautiful.
Got a 44 Mgn and to save money I reload my rounds.

Sad, but true. I only buy old S&W. I only own one new one and I am not impressed.

A Dirty .44 is a HAPPY .44!👍
you will never regret the S&W, something that can be passed down to you kids kids kids and it will still have lots of life left in it. .44 mag is way to much fun to shoot.
Mr. Hickok, Who's holster are you wearing for the S&W 629 4"? I am looking for one just like that. THANKS
+Bobbo Morgan
Hello,
I have one fitted for my 329pd,well made holster, good company, fast shipping!
Thanks,10ft.
That thing is a beauty. It has absolutely no cylinder gap. Beautiful.
Does your-cylinder have a gap ???
Be glad when Smith and Wesson stops putting keyholes in their revolvers.
Hickock and the s&w 629 videos is the reason I'm getting 44 magnum now! :)
So the .44 mag is stronger round than the .45 acp?
the 44 special is similar to the 45 ACP ballistically speaking. 44 Magnum is nearly twice as powerful.
Way more power in a 44MAG then a 45acp I love both thow.
Love my 629 6 1/2" stainless. 180 grain wadcutter sends a 6"- 10" flame out. Took it an indoor gun range and after 2 rounds the range master asked over the PA, "Ok, who has the shotgun?" Had it 20 years.
He literally knocked the Ram down at 13:37
Man, if there's one thing that's certain, it's that your videos are always entertaining.
Revólver sensacional 👍👍

"Made in U.S.A." Hell yes...

i want one with a 5 inch barrel
colinmoriarty I prefer 4" or smaller because I usually keep them in my glove box Incase somebody feels froggy LOl
Good luck cause there pretty rare
amazing how well of a marksman hickok is.
@frankmo13 , I reload almost all the .44 Magnum and .44 Special I shoot. Still very expensive, of course.
putting bullets in one at a time is part of the fun of the revolver.
That is the absolute coolest holster rig.
just traded for a no dash 629 with a pinned and recessed cylinder with a 6'' barrel. proud to have it!
Oh yes 44 Magnum and 357 Magnum are my favorites calibers in revolvers so far!
Shot one like this one last week. Had never shot a 44 out a 4 inch barrel. I like it a LOT !!
One of the Best Videos you ever made !!! Watched it from beginning to end without getting bored...
Carried one for many years as a Birmingham police officer. Shot through the tail gate of a Ford truck, it went all the way into the motor.
very nice six shooter!
Shot my 329pd for the first time today. Man, that thing is a beast. 44 magnum is a handful.
Holy close-up. Very nice. I do love these guns too. Just got my SW Classic M29 4"...just love, love, love it. I have a M66 .357 too. These are great guns!
I usually don't care for revolvers, but I like this video. thanks.
I recently gifted my old s prefix 5" model 27 to my eldest. Have a 1956 k38, a model 24, model 60 and a 686 +. Super Blackhawk and Blackhawk Bisley in .45 Colt. Love the wheel guns!
You have some nice ones there!
@@hickok45 Thanks, you shoot nicely as well. I cast bullets for mine. Like HS-6, Unique and 2400 for powders, though i do use some 231 and B.E.
Hickok45
I shot the .44 magnum with hot hand loads at an indoor range. It's like shooting a cannon. It is heavy duty. A great gun for target and hunting. I have a S&W .357 which is a really nice gun and caliber.
