Elmer Keith, Clint Eastwood and Hickok45. Legendary men of the .44 Magnum. I love all your shooting videos, but I really enjoy any video you do with this cartridge. Excellent marksmanship!
Definitely a caliber you want to reload for. With handloading, it's probably less expensive than shooting a .40 S&W or something, just another handgun caliber. Shooting factory ammo, though, can get really expensive in a hurry.
It is still fun to watch videos of Hickok45 over again on a cold winter day with coffee steaming. These are fun and relaxing and there is something comforting about watching Hickok45 shoot a favorite round of his no matter the barrel length. My easiest 44 to enjoy is a Raging Bull with my much smaller hands. No bear would dare enter that compound in TN. Unless it was Smokey the Bear!
Lead, non-jacketed bullets are easier on the barrel than about anything you could shoot. With porting, though, a steady diet of lead bullets could start to clog up the porting if it's not kept clean. Not sure. I don't have a lot of experience with porting in handguns.
I enjoy watching Hickok45 immensely. He is quite experienced and obviously enjoys what he’s doing. I have learned a lot about handloading from him and I am ever impressed with his shooting skills.
Mr. Hickok, Thank You Once again Sir for sharing your expertise shooting the 44 magnum. There is nothing as pleasant as watching someone whom enjoys what they are doing. Thank You, Marshal Davis
The Model 27 I mention was acquired back in 1976 when I was 17. My Mother bought it for me with money I had made working weekends when I was in High School. I have made lots of shots that myself and my shooting buddies remember fondly... Some of the most treasured memories of my Youth are of shooting with buddies...
.44Magnum is really powerful cartridge. I own an Amadeo Rossi Puma 92 repeater in .44Magnum. The recoil packs a punch even when fired from a rifle. Awesome caliber and an awesome weapon. Thanks man.
my knees hurt,my back hurts, I feel beat. But there is something about ol' hickok's voice, a little something, that elevates my mood. The trail boss is quite a smokewagon as well.
We discovered a year or two ago that it would interfere greatly with the progress, or even survival, of our channel. Don't know if that has changed, but at this point it almost doesn't matter.
I think Greg (Hickok45) is the reason why some guns don't stay in a case long and why Ammunition is never on a shelf. I don't blame him for making me want to go out sometime and go shooting, I blame my boss. Greg just helped me find a way how to channel my frustrations and stress into something more positive.
Love the slowmo at the end of the video. Especially showing the muzzle flash and then the sound effect of the steel plates...GREAT,now I'm going to be up all night with the video on my mind. GREAT JOB.
That's a revolver that pulls at my heart strings, too. The ending clips showing the slow motion fire rings looked surreal! Can't believe how much info has escaped me over the years, like the Garrett cartridges, for instance, and if I watch this channel long enough I figure I'll eventually know... everything!
Bought a trail boss back in '96. It was a 3 inch barrel, mag-na-ported and had a hogue grip with a lanyard loop. Had it for several years, and traded it for a Kimber 1911. Love the Kimber, but I regret getting rid of it. Looked for one for several years, finally bought a new S&W 629 3 inch performance center 2 years ago. Awesome weapon!
I like how he kinda saunters and carries himself a little differently when he gets out classic guns and revolvers, he seems very comfortable and relaxed, like he's greeting an old friend. On another note, I'd love to hear his take on the chiappa rhino.
Oh, you are absolutely 100% correct. The point that I was making is that powders play a significant role in the smoke as well. Case in point, factory lead rounds may smoke...but depending on the powder you use in reloading, the same bullet can be much more smoky and dirty.
44 is one of my fav calibers simply because there are so many different ways to reload the cartridge. target, hunting, light magnum, hot magnum, special ect. ect
Wonderful way to spend today. Beautiful gun with those grips. My favorite 44 is either the Taurus with those big grips or the Henry lever 44 Magnum Big Boy. The first 44 I shot was a friend's S&W. The first I owned was the Raging Bull. Now I have a Mare's Leg Rossi, but really enjoy shooting the Henry Big Bow rifle in 44. The hardest kicking difficult to control gun I have shot had to be my brother in law's 38 Special derringer. Could not hit side of barn with it.
Any other shooter would use the "not shooting these much lately" as an excuse. Mr. Hickock45 proceeds to not miss a shot. As always, entertaining and educational.
Hickok45 the gun God blesses me with a new 629-6 6 1/2 this week! It is awesome! And you sir are the greatest! Ammo is scarce and my shooting partner grabbed a box of Remington 180 JHP for range time!!! OMG the blast ring and noise from them things is just like the one in this Video!!!! Thanks sir for all you do for us rookies!!!!
Rolled my own, so to speak. A local LGS had one under the counter, was for sale but spendy, I had a 629-1, round butt, 6", too long and not very loved. So, located a 3" barrel and short ejector rod, off to the smith, ordered an Arhends round butt grip and there we go. A mutt, finish doesn't match but it is an impressive rig, shock and awe! Oh, and the firing pin is where it's supposed to be, on the hammer. . .. ;-}
leading is all dependant on what kind of ammo you use. if you cast your own bullets you might want to try using a higher antimony/lead ratio. leading can also be caused by excessive velocities. if you do reload try using a little less powder and see if this helps. another thing that might cause this is the bullet diameter itself. if your shooting unjacketed lead 1/1000" can make all the difference. gas-checks also prevent leading. just something to think about :)
I have taken a whitetail at 5(five) yards with that 240 grain jhp blazer. It went in right behind the rear left shoulder and stopped agains the front right shoulder on a quartering shot. It expanded perfectly. It is not a bad round out of a 6" 'Smith at least.
I bought a new 629PC with the 2.625" barrel today, and should receive it in about 5 days. I hope that it performs even close to your old 3" Trail Boss model! Great video from almost 10 years ago!! It will be a huge step up from my Ruger .357 mag. LCR EDC, for sure!
I reload quite a bit of .40 S&W, about 4000 rounds per year. The aluminum cases I pick up at ranges just go straight into the bin with the brass cases and go straight through the dies just like the brass cases. I think the "non-reloadable" status comes from how they feel in the dies. They are thinner because aluminum is stronger than brass and they deform less during firing because they are stronger and aluminum will deform elastically further than brass. I've never had a problem with them.
I love your simple explanation of sight radius. I`ve tried to explain it to people in the past in reference to the AK rifles & they immediately get that glassed over look, ( deer in the head lights) & I know I lost them. Liked!!
just unbelievable shooting capability, most people i know won't shot with any kind of pistol farther than 20m, and you just show over and over again how you cant take them to more than double that distance, great shooting & great video!!
All these years later, and everything is the same! THAT is why revolvers are so special. I just got my 629 12/20. Love it! Trigger is actually smoother than my Model 10, but boy, that .38 is accurate! Most accurate of all of my handguns - for me at least.
Awesome, awesome gun! I really love your revolver video's, those guns seem to have just a bit more character than the pistols. And compliments to John for his great camera work, it's so good you tend to not even notice.
That's true. Today's powdered metal products and MIM are every bit equal to forged pieces in strength. The difference from a smith's point of view is that any forging requires quite a bit of subsequent machining so the die marks are gone by the time he sees the part. With MIM the parts are made essentially to net size, which is a big cost advantage, but that also means the die marks are still visible.
That was a great video, THANKS! Love to see fireballs at night. Get out the 357 and 44 have a go when the lightning bugs are out.! This one got me enthused the way HEAVY LEAD did!
I couldn't agree more about Your comment, " You need to have either a .357 or a .44, If You don't what are You waiting for?" Personally, I prefer a revolver over a pistol.. My first centerfire handgun is a Smith & Wesson model 27, with an 8 and three eigths inch barrel... My favorite handgun ever... The Model 29 is second
The cylender on my 629 is longer than on my ruger redhawk. The 340grain +p+ buffalo bore and underwood fit in the 629 cylender with space to spare. They come all the way to the end of my redhawk. I haven't shot them out of the 629 though because people say not to
Old Hicky as my friends and I call you. I really enjoy watching your videos. Please continue making them! I always seem to find myself chuckling at your little jokes.
Ah Pure happiness, hickok45! Nothing quite as comforting as a warm 44 magnum revolver. Now I can sleep soundly. The 44 mag is a magnificient peace keeping tool!
Bear spray has a limited range. A .44mag tends to be a more reliable threat stopper compared to some CS spray. Not saying you don't have a point, but a big bore handgun is peace of mind and can also be used for hunting in a survival situation.
Nothing puts a stupid grin on my face like watching you shoot the gong with a short barreled handgun. Sure wish I could shoot like you. I would love to hang out with you for a day, I bet I could learn a lot. Just found you on TH-cam in the last yr, and sure get a kick out of watching. It's what finished selling me on the G29. Finally got one a couple weeks ago.
Yep....I'm sold....I'll be getting one. I think that everyone would benefit from a good trail gun. And everyone would be better off if they practiced enough to shoot like you. The slow mo at the end was great stuff.
I've found THE BEST cans to shoot at. A generic form of Ensure Plus made by Healthy Accents, called Nutritional Drink Plus. I happen to like the way they taste, so emptying them isn't a problem (they're a bit expensive to empty quickly with the pistol). I & a buddy hit 7 of them today repeatedly with .22, 9mm,& .45. They last much longer than a regular can! If you hit them just right, they will launch into the air and land several feet behind your platform - even w .22! I HIGHLY recommend them!
You are quite the expert marksman. Always enjoy watching your videos. I'm strongly considering buying a 629 N frame 44 mag. 6 1/2 or 7in. Barrel stainless. Love the looks of this revolver. Watched many of your videos and others on the internet and I'm really impressed with this revolver. I also know you love the S&W 44 MAG.
Most smith parts since the 80s have been cast rather than forged out of a solid piece of steel. Or what they call MIM (metal injection molded). So they have casting marks like the hollow back of the trigger.
I'm on the hunt for a good revolver right now that's bigger than 357 mag, and that gun looks perfect. A little bit more barrel than a snub nose is what I want too. Wish they didn't have key locks and loaded chamber indicators now.
It's funny, just yesterday I was thinking I need to own a 357 magnum Revolver. The .44 magnum would be a good woods-wilderness gun. Great video Hickok. Thanks once again.
5" is plenty; I've even recommend the 3" or 4" if you shoot enough to be proficient with them.
I am no where near as knowledgable but I just bought a S&W 629-6 with a 6" barrel and I absolutely LOVE it!!
I like the 3", but most would say the 4", which Elmer Keith really liked.
I just got the 2 and 5/8 barrel 629 performance center 44 mag .
Those fire rings in slow-mo at the end were sweet!
Thank you John for your fine camera work.

"It still hasn't gotten there." Love your sense of humor, Hickock!
.44Magnum is really powerful cartridge.
The trail boss is quite a smokewagon as well.
the muzzle flash in the opening sequence is some of the most impressive ive seen on your channel.
what a cannon,
keep shootin' +hickock45
Pause and move to 5 seconds, playback speed .25 then play.
the slow mo is amazing in this one
We discovered a year or two ago that it would interfere greatly with the progress, or even survival, of our channel. Don't know if that has changed, but at this point it almost doesn't matter.
You can always tell when Hickok is using his handloads by the smoke effects after each shot! Love it!!!
Thank you so much for the slow-mo at the end John. Those muzzle flashes are amazing.
Yes, I'll be there.
Nice firearm. The slo motion at the end was my favorite part. Muzzle Flash Rings!!!!!
I think Greg (Hickok45) is the reason why some guns don't stay in a case long and why Ammunition is never on a shelf. I love how fast those 44's get to the gong...I feel like you can really tell a difference. Great video :)
Any other shooter would use the "not shooting these much lately" as an excuse. Mr. Hickock45 proceeds to not miss a shot.
As always, entertaining and educational.

I have a 5 inch 629 Classic, absolutely love it. I take it hunting, its a great pistol
Just picked up the same gun yesterday....can't wait to run some ammo through it.
44 is my favorite to shoot. In a decent gun it doesn't hurt to shoot and is just downright awesome.
Rolled my own, so to speak. A local LGS had one under the counter, was for sale but spendy, I had a 629-1, round butt, 6", too long and not very loved. Crazy... at 10:50 you can actually see the round. Thanks for the video H45! Undoubtedly the most insightful gun channel I've come across.
Slower round, he shot all of them low on the gong or below it. Highlights the difference with the specials.
Love the sound of your laughter in the slow motion sequence at the end - sounds like Sasquatch!
It's mostly the cast bullet lube.
Love the .44, revolvers and lever action.
leading is all dependant on what kind of ammo you use. if you cast your own bullets you might want to try using a higher antimony/lead ratio. leading can also be caused by excessive velocities. if you do reload try using a little less powder and see if this helps. another thing that might cause this is the bullet diameter itself. if your shooting unjacketed lead 1/1000" can make all the difference. gas-checks also prevent leading. just something to think about :)
Gotta love the wheel gun, simple and fun to use. Love the muzzle flash too!
John, the slow-mo work on this is brilliant! Also seeing the comparison between the different loads was very interesting. Great work, thank you.

Thanks for the videos.

Love the muzzle flash that shows up on the slo-mo! Looks like a lighting bolt that precedes the target exploding.
just unbelievable shooting capability, most people i know won't shot with any kind of pistol farther than 20m, and you just show over and over again how you cant take them to more than double that distance, great shooting & great video!!

the 629 hunter with 3"bbl, full lug and unfluted cylinder is my all time dream gun. the crazy cop in the film "the professional" has one. :)
Awesome, awesome gun! I really love your revolver video's, those guns seem to have just a bit more character than the pistols. And compliments to John for his great camera work, it's so good you tend to not even notice.
I love the slow motion shots at the end. It sounds like thunder :)
It's one of those good life things. Big bore ,, shorter tube. I use Trailboss in my big bores and .40 s&w also. Thanks Hickok. Always fun.
This has to be my favorite hickok45 video! Keep up the good work!

Holy moly, see the halo at 21:36? Great looking gun. Huge difference with shorter shells. Thanks.
Love the way the fire ring shows up in slow motion.
That was a great video, THANKS!
Love to see fireballs at night. Get out the 357 and 44 have a go when the lightning bugs are out.!
This one got me enthused the way HEAVY LEAD did!
Excellent video...and I love the "Ring of Fire" effect from this beautiful .44 Magnum revolver in frame 21:36 when you blasted the bowling pin! :)
Just picked up a trail boss. Love it!
Hickok45 you shoot that .44 better than most semi auto's that I have seen you shoot. Makes me want to go get another .44...Thanks
I couldn't agree more about Your comment, " You need to have either a .357 or a .44, If You don't what are You waiting for?"
Personally, I prefer a revolver over a pistol..
My first centerfire handgun is a Smith & Wesson model 27, with an 8 and three eigths inch barrel...
My favorite handgun ever...

100% agreed ... and the 3 follow-up shots !!! Fantastic !!! Great observation !!!
That slo-mo was really something else. Very cool.
The cylender on my 629 is longer than on my ruger redhawk. The 340grain +p+ buffalo bore and underwood fit in the 629 cylender with space to spare. They come all the way to the end of my redhawk. I haven't shot them out of the 629 though because people say not to
love the circular muzzle flash/powder burn off on the slo-mo...
Excellent question!! I have been trying to persuade him to "Trail Boss" for years!
that fireball halo in the slowmo is amazing
"I just wanted to miss a couple, show you I could miss" Lol, your humor entertains me greatly.
21:37 best slow motion ever
That was one of or prob the best video about a .44 magnum..thank you hickok45
Love the slow motion laugh at 21:34 haha! I want one of these guns just need to wait a few more pay checks.
Finally! Got mine today. Came with the Hogue grips with the lanyard attachment. Born to sit in my hand, feels great. Can't wait to break it in.
So glad to hear more magnum videos are coming!
Old Hicky as my friends and I call you. I really enjoy watching your videos. Please continue making them! I always seem to find myself chuckling at your little jokes.
I LOVE that ring of fire on the muzzle flash ! Too cool !!
Ah Pure happiness, hickok45! Nothing quite as comforting as a warm 44 magnum revolver. Now I can sleep soundly. The 44 mag is a magnificient peace keeping tool!
Great video! John the fire rings are amazing keep up the great camera work!
I had a 629 DX. Loved that gun. It turned a squirrel inside out.
Thanks my friend. I had thought about the gas checks but I didn't consider changing the lead mix. I'll see about both.
Gary
Not much if you never carry one. On the other hand, if you ever pack one around at all, the question gets answered pretty quickly. :-)
I agree, revolvers are fun to shoot. A Ruger GP100 4" stainless .357 is on my "must have" list.
The Fire Ring coming out of that Beast is Beautiful!
Elmer Keith and Mr. Hickok45 have made me fall in love with the .44 magnum.
Thanks once again.
the bullet drop on the .44 specials was very apparent, so was the time lag from shot to PLONG! lol...great vid keep em coming!
the metal targets being shot sound awesome in the slow-mo
