In a live context, their music has so
much more heft and weight to it.
No wonder they are touted as being
one of the best live bands in history.

best thing about it being live on Show of Hands was you finally and I mean FINALLY got to hear Alex do the solo without it fading out. This whole concert was great. I owned the VHS tape and watched it till it broke. Looking for the DVD/Blue Ray of this one now. Neil's drum solo on this one was amazing as well. and Geddy doing it all was crazy, Vocals, Bass, keyboards and or pedals. yeah beat that. Great job Justin. keep up the great work.

I guess what you can’t replicate watching the live versions is How their sound and those synths filled the arena. I think that’s what people mean when they say they like the song after hearing it live. Geddy does say “now for something different”. Makes me wonder what their mindset was when they made HYF. We know where Neils was, meditating (and possibly medicating ) in China😂. I know Highwater was written while he was in China as well. Good ear pointing out that drum pattern. I love his drumming in this song.

Live version brings some urgency and elevates from the recording…as it should. I don’t rank this song as highly as many Rush fans do, but it should grow on you. I love when Alex does outro guitar solos. Always a treat.

Hold Your Fire came out in September 1987. The next album, Presto, didn't come out until November 1989. So for over 2 years, HYF was the latest Rush album. I listened to it well over a hundred times. It really grew on me. All Rush albums took a lot of listens for me to really "get" them. Having the whole Rush catalog available all at once to "binge listen" doesn't allow each album to sit with you for months and months. You can jump from album to album and pack 10 years worth of anticipation into an afternoon if you want. I think that might take away from the impact each album could have had.

I second that. If I heard Test for Echo, and on while having them all available on iTunes or something, those albums would never have received more than a couple listens. By the time I was able to listen to Vapor Trails through Clockwork, I had so many others to choose from on a digital playlist, that I rarely played those.

I've grown to love this track over the years. The studio version is OK but like a lot of their 80's material it's in the live context where the songs really work. I love Neil's lyrics on this and by this stage he had really become a master of that craft. The thing that really stands out though is Alex's solo. So much power, so much emotion. It's one of his best ever IMHO.

You must watch the 2112 overture from this same concert. It includes the fastest broken-guitar-string-change-guitars-in-mid-song ever. Alex did a tremendous feat and Geddy still calls him out on it.
Oh and as a bonus in the same medly they have La Villa Strangiato with a hilarious censorship interjection.

Quite sure it's from the video recording from A Show of Hands soundtrack in Birmingham.
They did Mission live on the Snakes and Arrows tour in 2007/08 and Alex added some guitar during the verses to roughen the edges of the song a bit more. It was quite a cool rendition.

One of their "I love the frickin lyrics" songs, because it brings me back to a moment in time. I had a friend whose father was a crazy genius scientist and we were talking about a friend who worked at "dead end" job making widgets. I still remember him saying how he envied her, because she was happy and how he envied people who could do work like that and enjoy it.

    Hold your fire -
    Keep it burning bright
    Hold the flame
    ‘Til the dream ignites -
    A spirit with a vision
Is a dream with a mission
    I hear their passionate music
    Read the words
    That touch my heart
I gaze at their feverish pictures
The secrets that set them apart
When I feel the powerful visions
    Their fire has made alive
    I wish I had that instinct -
I wish I had that drive
    Spirits fly on dangerous missions
    Imaginations on fire
    Focused high on soaring ambitions
    Consumed in a single desire
    In the grip
    Of a nameless possession -
A slave to the drive of obsession -
    A spirit with a vision
    Is a dream with a mission…
    I watch their images flicker
Bringing light to a lifeless screen
    I walk through
    Their beautiful buildings
And I wish I had their dreams
    But dreams don’t need
    To have motion
    To keep their spark alive
Obsession has to have action -
    Pride turns on the drive
    It’s cold comfort
    To the ones without it
To know how they struggled -
    How they suffered about it
    If their lives were
    Exotic and strange
    They would likely have
    Gladly exchanged them
For something a little more plain
Maybe something a little more sane
We each pay a fabulous price
    For our visions of paradise
But a spirit with a vision
    Is a dream with a mission…

Tell me that middle instrumental section isn’t a recipe for a train wreck in the making. That shit gets crazy OMG WTF were they thinking😂still gots to prove they prog and still have the chops to pull it off I guess. What’s really funny is Geddy and Neil double timing and multitasking on their respective instruments, and Alex over there just chillin, throwing in a few short but tasty solos, in the middle and then at the end, but otherwise strumming a sustained chord or stepping on a few bass pedals every now and then.🤘🖖✌️🎸🎹🎤🥁

I saw the Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows and Hold Your Fire tours as a teen. What amazed me then and even more now, considering the prodigious 80's production, was how each song sounded like they were lifted from the albums. So incredibly tight and well rehearsed. It bums me out that I didn't see more of them live. Amazing sets.

  • @yes_head
    @yes_head 2 ปีที่แล้ว

All of this music is SO much better live. There's no mistaking the Moog Taurus pedals, and Alex's guitar is much higher in the mix. If these mid 80s albums had been mixed like this they would have been so much better. I do wonder, however, if they were taking advantage of taped backing tracks, or if these recordings were enhanced in post production. There are places where you can hear chord changes on the keyboard but Geddy's hand doesn't move, plus you can hear soft guitar arpeggios and Alex isn't doing anything.

This is from a show of hands video. Different version from the live album. I prefer the album version it’s subtle in how geddy sings and the solo is more up front in the beginning.
The video also has a few songs that the album doesn’t and Vice verses. The live album release is more of a compilation of songs from multiple locations whereas the video is mostly from Birmingham I believe.
And that guitar Alex is using here ….I would love to have one of those. Lots of people hated the sound. Whether it was the guitar or speakers, people hated the thin sound of this Strat copy. From a company in Canada called signature I believe. Don’t know why but I loved the tone he had back then.

Geddy had such a wonderful voice back then. He managed to remain a good singer for quite some time, but his voice naturally started aging. That youthful quality is unique though and wonderful to hear. This is pretty much true for all singers. There are different qualities to their voices between their youth and their older years. He did a great job on this song. It kinda makes up for the hair.

See this song does does bring this song more alive in my opinion. I can see why people think this song is inspirational because live, it is. It is better here live because one can see the perspective of every band member, not from some distinct track on a disk. By-tor and the Snow dog was better live too because like this song it was made to be played in a concert hall.

yeah outside of the instrumental section, the chordal arrangements and harmonic shifts are just something... a little more plain. I know they were trying to project a feeling of elevation and inspiration, but those major keys are just too saccharin. Hate to say it, but Celine Dion could have sung this song.

It's only 1988, and you can see that Geddy has already given up on being a keyboard player, despite the rig. At the top of the song, he's not even playing the part...he's just holding down a key that plays the changes for him. He may as well be playing a tape recorder.

not sure about that? its a simple two chord pairing with only one note changing by a half step between them. the video is too low quality but I believe he is fingering the actual chords. they're not very hard to play lol.

Not my favorite song. But I've always enjoyed its live performance at shows.

The live version is better, but still not my cup of coffee. Geddy using Wahl Bass and Alex using Signature guitars Mmmmmm no! Very "thin" guitar sound to me. All those sampled sounds too? No!

I love this one, such a depth of meaning behind it. You didn't care for it but you gave it your due diligence. Fair is fair. Cheers!
