My Dad was a Latvian. When he died he left us 136 hectares of land in Latvia 🇱🇻 farm land. The USSR took the land after the Second World War. Demolished the huge stone farmhouse. Then in the 90’s he got his land back when Latvia got it’s independence back. I have never visited Latvia. I also have some family there. Maybe one day I will visit there..👍♥👍🇬🇧🇱🇻 Your a great vlogger ! 👍
Thank you for this video. I am Estonian, live in Tallinn. I come to Riga regularly for a certain clinic. So I have walked around quite a lot in Riga just to pass time for my bus or my appointment, because I am obsessed to use the 7pm bus to Tallinn. So I have walked around A LOT but never really looked at the city as a tourist cause there are other things on my mind when I am there. This video actually inspired me to spend some time exploring next time I go. You made a good point in the video: there is a lot very different stuff all mixed up together. So there can be a medieval building, a very nice modern building, an awful Soviet style monster and some random I-dont-know-what all on the same street. And that makes it a bit hard to grasp the soul of the place. The good thing about Tallinn, my city, is that since we were quite poor after the Middle Ages, we never did all the rebuilding and remodelling during centuries, so the medieavalness in Tallinn is a lot better preserved. And then already it became illegal to pester regions with old buildings anyway, so luckily we dont have modern buildings next to Medieval ones. So as a whole I like Tallinn more. Riga is sort of all over the place. While it does have a lot of amazingly beautiful buildings. I will definitely spend more time consciously exploring there from now on. Some of the buildings, the merchant houses, are very similar to those in Tallinn. I have tried to find the man in the box on the riverside but never managed to find it:) What hostel is that? (Sorry, if you mention it, I havent watched to the end yet). Have been looking for a normal hostel in Old town which is not too full. Honestly, havent found one. The ones I have found are packed with very weird people to say the least, or are very far from the centre. There is an Anglican church near the river in Old town. I have a cat friend there. I sometimes like to sit in the church yard and have coffee and read a book. The cat always comes (from a whole in the church, so she lives there), sleeps on my lap for a while and then leaves. And so every time. Why she trusts me like that, I dont know. It is nice to have a cool city like that a 4 hour busride away from Tallinn. Last time I was waiting for the night bus, and discovered how cool it was to walk on the bridge across the river and back. You should check out Tallinn some time. It is kind on similar, yet different. Smaller and has a more specific feeling, I think. A definitely more quiet than Riga. We just have drunk Finns. It looks like Riga the rest of Europe"s drunk people. Anyway, greetings to all the Latvians out there. By the way, I went to see a Latvian play the other day in Tallinn. "The boy who saw in the dark" God, one of the most depressing plays I have ever seen. Leaves one with no hope
@@BenRobson123 Of course! Tallinn is one of my favorite cities and there is so much to see! I would recommend Helsinki, however it is better to do it as a day or 2 day trip from Tallinn as it can be quite expensive compared to Tallinn. Latvia was not occupied by Nazi Garmany during WWI, that happend during WWII. There were some riflemen though that fought the germans on the banks of Daugava river, back in 1915 to 1917. The zeppelineres also were during WWII.
Thank you for correcting me Ivan. I do try to make sure I get things right, but sometimes resources can be conflicting and hard to make sense of it all. Appreciated 😊
