- In this video I continue my adventure along the Great Divide, we pick up where the last video left off, in Fernie, and I soon cross into the U.S. The landscape seems to change immediately as I make my way through the prairies and grasslands of Montana, before tackling some pretty big climbs again. I end this video at the most amazing camping spot near Whitefish.
For those of you that are new to my channel, welcome. I will be releasing videos regularly throughout my journey along the GDMBR, so please subscribe if you would like to follow along.
Thank you for watching.
00:00. Starting Day 5
03:04. Dessert before main
09:06. U.S. border crossing
15:45. End of a long day
20:29. Dehydrated and slightly delirious
25:00. Plans to finance the rest of my trip
27:41. Wonderful camp spot to end Day 8
31:00. Hummingbirds!
Really awesome series, Mat! Love seeing a more laid back video series of the GDMBR versus all the racers doing 200 miles a day.
Thanks. I was glad to be able to take my time on this one. I couldn't have done it much quicker anyway. It was an awesome route. Cheers 👍
Hey!!! We subscribed, finished yesterday and enjoying Banff. So lovely to meet you and we are looking forward to your updates. Chris and Lou from Brighton
Excellent. Well done both 👍🎆🎇👍 it was great meeting you....I'm in Helena and am still loving it! You were right, Montana is amazing! Cheers
You’re doing fab. 🤩Just peddle
Faster if you hear a banjo😜
🤣 for sure!!
Binge watching your series , really enjoying it.
Excellent. Keep going!!! I'm glad you're enjoying it.
Great stuff again. I think you were ok-isch even when you were dehydrated. Keep up the spirit and short days in between are the trick. Drink water, have good food, keep up the electrolytes AND HAVE A LOT OF FUN!
I will definitely do everything that you say 🤣 Cheers!!!!
Your dry sense of humor and self observations are hilarious! You are UNIQUE Mat and I'm enjoying your videos as much as any I've seen on YT. Thank you and looking forward to the rest of your journey.
Thanks. I get such nice comments and it always cheers me up 👍👍
Made me chuckle when you arrived in Eureka, there was a TV show based around there on Sky (I think) a few years ago
I'll have to look into that. I really like those small towns!!
I'll have to look into that. I really like those small towns!!
Fantastic series, only at episode 2 so far. Would love to attempt something like this but the bears and wildlife just scare me too much. Great insight Mat and presentation :)
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. The bears were definitely a worry but don't let that put you off. Bear spray will keep you safe. It's an incredible trail. Cheers 👍
and making friends along the way ... she was a good dog .
A very good dog. What a fantastic place to find. I was very lucky. Cheers.
Thumbs up for Rosie
The dogs I meet are becoming the highlight of the trip so far! Thank you for following along.
Awesome! Great ball throwing skills😊If you get a chance, get some soda bicarbonate - it’s a re-hydrator - tea spoon in a glass of water💧
Good tip. I'll look into the sodium bicarbonate. Rosie was an awesome dog.....thanks for the tip 👍👍
Rubber side down ,thanks for posting.
Cheers 👍👍👍
Nice to see you’ve finally realise that liquids are necessary. Awesome shot of the hummingbirds. I must go back to Montana too.
Maybe we should all come back to Montana!!!! You'd love Ovando...
Thanks.
I laughed so hard at your signoff that tears blur my view as I write.
You are a National treasure, ours.
I just had to watch it to find out what you meant. I laughed a bit myself!!! Thanks for the kind words and for being such a regular commenter. It's really appreciated 👍
Fantastic Tip about not realizing you need water when biking because you're getting the breeze, THANKS, really enjoy your videos.
I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I'm learning a lot about cycling on this trip. Thanks for commenting 👍
Another great installment, cheers. A low flying plane and hummingbirds were added bonuses. i wish i had known about strawberry creek shelter before i got there, it's 7.4 miles past Union pass Wyoming, going southbound. it would be a perfect mosquito free camp spot.
I'll be sure to stay at that spot. Mosquito free!!!!!!! Are you sure. They're battering me at the moment.
@@matryderadventures i had a quick look around in the shelter and it seemed airtight, i was in Wyoming this time last year and the mosquitoes were the worst i'd ever experienced. i'd set my tent up in full rain gear to avoid most of the bites and then be roasting!
Great video. Enjoy the ride.
Cheers 👍. It's been amazing so far!
Rosie was delightful! Nothing like a good game of ball and a beer! lol I always hike with electrolyte packets to mix with my water in the summer, it got me through some hot ones, saved me from melting. lol :) Nothing like an insulated bottle for hiking or biking. I have a GSI Microlite and I love it. Now, Montana being as epic as Canada? That is crazy talk! haha! That said, I did hear Montana is beautiful. :) Thanks for sharing, looking forward to your next episode! :) :)
I have started to use more electrolytes. I got it very wrong to begin with but think I'm on top of it now. Canada Vs Montana?? They're very different but both increeible. I can't have favourites in case people get jealous 🤣

Well this was just a lovely chapter. It seems the cravings that come from this sort of all day exertion give you the appetite of a 6 year old! Am I to assume you haven't shared the spoils of your re-supply stops as it is all sweets, crisps, and fizzy drink? The last few minutes of this video were particularly enjoyable, it is nice to get reminders from time to time that most people out there are good and generous.
You have me figured out. I am eating child food at the moment. All junk and sweets. I know I need to do something about it or I'll never make it to Mexico. It's strange what the body craves when you're borderline exhausted. That last camp spot was incredible.
I'm starting my second round of watching your entire GDMBR series. LOVE IT! I had a bad bike crash June of 2023 shattered my pelvis, broke my other collarbone- wheelchair for several months. Haven't been able to ride outside yet (its now February) but on the trainer and watching videos. Turned 60 last year (Ugh!), but GDMBR is becoming a goal of mine for next year- mostly because of you! You said, 'if you are thinking of doing it, then do it!' Well, I'm thinking of doing it, so..... And at my age, I'm finally realizing I'm quickly running out of time. Thanks for the inspiration.
It sounds like you've had a rough time. It must have been a big crash. It's good to hear you're recovering. I honestly love to hear when I've inspired somebody to do the GDMBR. I didn't think it was something that would happen. I wish you all the best with your recovery and am happy to answer any questions you have. My email is matryder2@gmail.com
Send any questions over. Good luck and thanks for the support. Cheers, Mat 👍👍
I'm turning 60 this year (I can't believe it), and I want to do the GDMBR. I need to find out how much money I need. Good luck on your recovery and GDMBR adventure, God bless.
I have a video about the costs etc. For my GDMBR tour. You might want to take a look. I went well over the top but could have ridden that trail with a much smaller budget. I hope you make it out there. Cheers 👍
Those are trampolines? Hmm! I bet most people in rural Montana thought they were buying satellite dishes and left them in their yards once the grew tired of trying to figure out how to hook them up to their T.V. 🤣😂 (This from an American living in Germany who's had quite some experience with Americans from the rural NW and SE parts of the country.)
I fully concur with your assessment, re: prefer Columbia Falls to Whitefish, it’s more American. 😊
Thank you for sharing your adventure. I’m desperate to get out there and do the GDMBR.
I definitely preferred the non touristy, real towns. I can honestly say that riding the GDMBR was one of the best experiences ofy whole life. If you can make it happen then go for it. Cheers 👍
Hey Bert! amazing trip, Electrolyte tables in the water bottles help with keeping hydrated in the heat. (in case you haven't discovered them yet) Best Ernie. ;-)
I have started using electrolytes more. I'm going to start using the gels too. I underestimated how many I'd need. Cheers 👍
@@matryderadventures I personally find that sweets and biscuits are cheaper, more available and do the same job as expensive/sticky cycling gels......
Plenty of carbs and hydration (biscuits and water/electrolyte tabs) with a few sweets for sugar, works for me for on bike fueling.
Tailwind powder (for water bottles) if you see any, is another good one that helps me through long/hard days.
Just try to eat and drink the whole ride is the trick, if you start to feel depleted its probably too late.
Keep up the good work. HTH
Cheers Ernie. All good advice. I'll follow it all!!
Tip when you fill those insulated steel bottle fill them with ice at gas station buy a bag it quench the thirst more than drinking 1 litres of what a hour
Good tip. Thanks. I'll try it today 👍
@@matryderadventures yeah man drinking 1 litre a hour is crazy it means 12 hour ride would mean 12 litres carrying 12 kg of water per day ..no way
"After delivery, they got their arm trapped in the springs and broke it..." 😂 So funny! Desolate trampoline!
Gave a thumbs up for Rosie. 🐕❤
Rosie was such a nice dog. It seems like ages ago now!!! Trampolines 🙄🙄🙄
Last year I rode from Whitefish to Seeley Lake so I'm really enjoying seeing your take on the route. I just hope you don't have the same "bloody hell" heat that I had.
It's been pretty warm! Today has been crazy hot. That was a really nice part of the route.
Excellent 👌looking forward to your adventures mat. Tom in Dublin
Just subscribed
Thanks for subscribing Tom 👍. Glad you're enjoying the videos.
Keep it up. Thanks for sharing your journey
Thanks for following along 👍 I'll keep the videos coming!!
Looks awesome, good to see the old legs are bearing up under the pressure. Tan coming along well too😊. Glad there are humans around I imagined there would be no-one for some reason. They all wave cos they think your nuts 🤣. Great views and lovely little camping areas, especially with Rosie. Good luck with the next few days, especially if you're going up and over those mountains. Stay 😎 cool.😊
The legs are just about managing. They're tired today though but it's tough. They're going to work anyway!!
Well done Matt loving the trip so far and the weather has been pretty kind …look fwd to the next instalment. Cheers Coops 👍🏻🚴🍻
I've been really lucky with the weather. I'll be in Helena today and still haven't really been rained on.
Rosie, a trail angle! Trail angels are the best. They make the journey magical.
Absolutely. That was one of my favourite stops. Cheers 👍
Loving the journey Mat, feels like we're right there with you, enjoy every moment you can. Long trips are great for the soul
They definitely are!! Thanks for following along 👍
I love your commentary. It is pretty easy to get confused on days and location after a while. Make sure you get enough electrolytes with your water. It'll mess with you if you don't. That mountain air can really dry you out.
You're 100% right about the electrolytes. I'm figuring all of that stuff out at the moment. Thanks.
Loved it Math. Glad to see you’re not completely alone out there. 😊Loved the hummingbirds. A nice way to sign off. Ross has a point. X
The hummingbirds are amazing. You always take Ross's side 😡......
Really enjoying the filming. I feel like I am there with you on the ride - but without the effort! Love the humming birds at the end.
That's great to hear..I feel like someone's with me when I film too.
Love this content, thanks for producing, and sharing. I know these are never easy and can be time-consuming. Definitely motivational....as a 57-year-old cyclist, Im hoping this is still in my future!
I really enjoy the whole TH-cam thing. It does take up some time but it's definitely worth it. Thanks for watching. I hope you.make it out onto the GDMBR too. Cheers 👍
Ha ha! The desolate trampoline. So true.
A worldwide curse!!!
Brilliant Clip Mat, you put some real effort in to those shots, as always. Great watch. 👍
Thanks. I'm glad you like them. Some take a while to film, and a lot of running up and down the trail. All good fun though. Cheers 👍
Ah! I’m soooo excited to ride this route now! Can’t wait to watch the next episode. Thank you for sharing all your advice!
No problem. I really enjoy the whole TH-cam thing. You'll love it out there. Cheers 👍
COOL IS THERE A helmet law in Canada with all those tree my hammock would love it there
Hammock camping in Canada would be incredible.
A refreshing approach... lower mileage with no zeros. Thanks and best...pops
Thanks. I preferred to try to do that the whole way. I took two or three zeros in total, mainly to explore. Cheers 👍
Watching from Belize 🇧🇿
Excellent. Cheers 👍👍
I’m loving this adventure. Thank you 👍🏼🇨🇦
Good to hear. Thanks for watching 👍
Hi Mat. Thank you for these great videos of GDMBR.
Thanks. I really enjoy filming them. Glad you liked them..cheers 👍
A joy to watch wonderful ending aww . 🐕 🐦 Thank you for sharing
Thanks. It was a lovely place to finish the day. I loved the hummingbirds.
@matryderadventures me too bless . We'll done Mat
Looks amazing. Great to see your body is adapting quickly. Perhaps a good idea, as you are dehydrating so much, would be to buy some electrolyte powder at your next stop. Safe riding. Cheers 👍
I'm surprised at how quickly my legs are getting stronger. They're tired today though!!!! I think I've figured out the electrolytes now. Hopefully anyway. Cheers 👍
@@matryderadventuresGood luck. 👍
You just missed John and Mira from Mira La Perra dogpacking channel the are redoing the tour divide route they were in the tour divide race last month but John had bike mechanical problems as well as a bad knee so they reloaded their trip to the mexican border. They are the Canadian favorites you might just run into them they are nearly at the border this day July 16. Great travels and enjoy yourself. :) :)
I may see them then. I'll keep an eye out for them. Everybody loves Mira!!!!
Another great update Mat! One of my favourite things about riding bikes over long distances is that I get to eat whatever I want! Great to see you doing the same!
Definitely!!! No worrying about calories out here. In fact, I need to eat more. I'm losing weight! Thanks for following and I'm glad you like the videos 👍
Best video series on TH-cam…. I’m joining you for a beer 🍺
Well then....Cheers!!!!!!!🍻🍻
Oh man, I can't wait to get up to Montana some day, I wanna cowboy camp and stargaze all night. Beautiful skies at night when you are that far out!
Last night was unbelievable. I've never seen a night sky like it.
Heard about your journey whilst out MTB at home (Hertfordshire , UK), my mate was loving the videos and recommended you to me. I have now caught up on all of them and I am loving your journey. I like the honesty that you effuse and I now want to do the trip. Keep up the videos I look forward to the next drop.
It's always nice to hear good feedback.. thanks. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I would definitely recommend that you do this trip if you get chance. It's an amazing experience and seeing America by bike is the best way in my opinion..
Well Mat, I really enjoy watching your adventure on the GDMBR! I was planning this after retirement in almost 2 years, but my knees did give me trouble. Today I was at the sports orthopedic surgeon….. everything was good, no arthritis! So it will be a go. Now, after a long time preparing another (“sure”) preparation to go. I am Sooo excited! I have some experience in cycling long distances. TransAm and from Prudhoe bat to Panama City. Altogether 12 months of (paid leave!) and soo much fun and adventure! You are showing the GDMBR in All its glory! With very valuable comment (in between the lines)! I just finished part 1 and the general overview afterwards! I will definitely see all the TH-cam films and I already am
More inspired than I already was! Thank you very much for that. I might have some more questions, but I will ask them after seeing all the episodes! Great work!
Hi. I'm excited for you. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I did. That 12 month ride you did sounds incredible. If you have any questions just put them in the comments or, if it's easier you can email me at matryder2@gmail.com. I'm more than happy to answer. Thanks for watching👍👍
So you probably know this already but watch out when you get further south into Colorado and New Mexico you will need more water because of how dry the air is you don't even realize you are sweating.
I'm starting to realise that I need more water bottles. I have a pack away rucksack so am planning on using that. Thanks for the advice. Cheers 👍
Loving the scenery , and I'm gonna start using the word brilliant a lot more . I like it .
🤣🤣 I must use that word too much. That and 'amazing'. Brilliant comment. Thanks 👍
As a person who grew up in Columbia Falls and still visit my parents there frequently, it brought a smile to my face to see you enjoyed it there. "More American" was a very good description. That town has seen many years of hard times.
I don't know what it is but certain towns appeal to me and Columbia Falls was one of them. Touristy places are the same all over the world. I like the real places. Cheers 👍
Playing catch up Mat loving it what an incredible journey your on 👍
It is an amazing trip. Glad you're enjoying the videos. Thanks for following along 👍
Thanks!
Cheers 👍👍👍. I'm heading out on a short overnighter today and will get a coffee!!
Subscribed for the "desolate trampoline" observation.
Excellent. I knew somebody would agree with me on that one. I'm not alone!!!!!!
Round #2, watching re-runs while waiting for the next update. Hope all is going well Mat
Re-runs 🤣. it's all going well. I'm in Dillon Colorado at the moment. Next video will be out tomorrow. Cheers 👍
Just watching your next episode sipping a coffee before setting off to work. Btw what sort of drone do you own Mat?
Hi. I have a DJI Mini 3 Pro. It's tiny and very lightweight. It's worked well so far. I'm drinking coffee too. I'll be back out riding soon after a day off yesterday. Have a good day 👍
Can’t believe it took 25 minutes into the video for you to say the word ‘coffee’! 😂
Did Rosie let you get much sleep?! x
I can hardly believe that myself. She did let me sleep eventually. She was straight back on it in the morning though.
@@matryderadventures that’s why the kind lady didn’t charge you to pitch because you wore out her dog 😂
Wow, this is really some great stuff this series. 👍🏻
Thanks. Great feedback. It's amazing out here. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Hi ,Thanks for posting ,I enjoyed your journey so far. As I am planning this for next year ,what was you average daily spend ,or total spend? It itseems to me that I would have a similar approach to you.
I need to work it all out but will be discussing finances/budget etc. In a future video. I will probably go into some detail about different ways to approach the trail. Cheers 👍
Another great video Mat, and now I've also got part 3 for tonight 😃
I see that plenty of people have already commented on the importance of electrolytes in your water, so I won't mention any further the importance of putting electrolytes in your water. (VERY)!
You look like you're into the swing of things now, as if any previous anxiety has faded and you're really enjoying just rolling 🚴♂️ along 👌
Here's hoping this run of good weather ☀️ keeps up 👍
Did i mention electrolytes 🤔
Hi. I currently have over 30 sachets of electrolytes in my food bag so I've definitely gone the other way now. I've learned my lesson. It makes a huge difference and I'm feeling the benefits already. I am starting to feel more relaxed and getting into the swing of things so that's good, especially considering I'm currently over a quarter of the way through. It's all going so quick. Cheers.
@@matryderadventures oh good, it's a very necessary additive.
Yes, you're looking more relaxed since day 1.
I'm a bit annoyed with myself that I'm not doing it this year too.
ATB 👍
I really am loving this series. I'm going to subscribe because I appreciate you taking us along on your journey and inspiring me to do this also. I just need to know how much does something like this cost? I'll have to save. If anyone can give me a roundabout figure, I would appreciate it.
Here's the video I mentioned. I hope it helps. Thanks for subscribing.

Hi, is it possible to give us a long and lat of the place you camped in Ferndale. I am guessing that it is on the 209 If that isn't possible was it before of after the Fire Station, thank you in advance.
I'll try to get the long and lat but I'm using the ACA gpx files. If you head out of Columbia Falls for approximately ten miles it's right on the GDMBR route. You can't miss it.
Thanks for the reply, sorry to go on about this but if someone arrives in the dark the exact location would be really useful. If you look at 27.47 you will notice a street sign behind you, do you remember that is says?
@@leebarrett4709 I understand. I can send you a screenshot of the exact location including street names and a telephone number if you sent me an email to matryder2@gmail.com. otherwise, it's on the junction. Of Blackmer Ln and Lauman Road.
good morning, nice push bike. Which brand is it??
Good morning. It's a Sonder Broken Road. Sonder are a British brand but have a pesence in the US too. Cheers 👍
What would you do if you encounter a bear?
You're supposed to look as big as possible and hope they wander off. Otherwise I have bear spray.
@@matryderadventures Good to hear!
