  • It has been an amazing week in Lerwick Harbour with the visit of the 2023 Tall Ships Race. This is a short compilation of some of the sights around Lerwick harbour full of sailing vessels. Much of the footage is taken as we sailed through the harbour aboard the sixareen ‘Vaila Mae’. If you get to the end of the clip there is some stunning footage of Lerwick harbour taken in the early hours of the morning, just before dawn.
00:00 Tall Ships in lerwick, The Shetland Fiddlers Society
    02:28 Sixareen Sailing, Fiddlers’ Bid
06:39 Tall Ships at night, Fiddlers’ Bid ‘Swan LK243’
The music is all performed live at The Tall Ships by local groups I am a member of. The first set features some trowie jigs played by The Shetland Fiddlers’ Society ‘Aith Rant, Vallafield, Garster’s Dream and Da Brig’.
The next track is an excerpt from Fiddlers’ Bid’s concert on Victoria Pier, we play a traditional Shetland reel called ‘da Fustra’ and go into an Asturian tune called ‘Salton’. You may spot a couple of skeklers that appeared on the dance floor.
We leave you with Catriona McKay’s beautiful and iconic tune ‘Swan LK243’ performed by Fiddlers’ Bid. Catriona composed the tune aboard Shetland’s flagship! ‘Swan’ during the Tall Ships Race in 1999. The ‘Swan’ is a Fifie built in Lerwick in 1900 for the herring fishing, it can be seen under full sail in the film, skippered by Shetlander Maggie Adamson and a local crew, plus sail trainees aboard. They were setting sail for Norway on the last leg of the Tall Ships Race 2023.
A special thanks has to go out to the event organisers and sponsors. A tremendous week that will last in folk memories for a long time. The event was so well organised and run, it was a real joy to be part of it all, playing music, meeting so many people, locals and crew from the ships, plus visitors to Shetland, and also managing to get off sailing in the harbour.

Thanks to Gordon Henderson for filming the Shetland Fiddlers Society and Fiddlers’ Bid.
Filmed with DJI Pocket 2, DJI Mavic Mini Pro 3 and iPhone XS max.

Nice video Maurice. I' m a sailor myself and I like the old norwegian types of boats. The sixareen is a great seagoing ship and with group is seems a lot of fun to try the sea. The music is a blessing for the soul. Thanks!

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. The sixareen ‘Vaila Mae’, is certainly a fine boat, we usually have a weekly sail during the summer months, plenty of good yarns aboard with the crew. Looking forward to next season.

Lovely film. The footage at the end, combined with Catriona’s tune, is absolutely beautiful! About 10 years ago I worked in Lerwick for a year. I often paused on a night shift to look out at the sky lightening over the town and sea in the (sometimes) tranquil predawn hours. But I don’t think I ever saw Lerwick looking quite like this. What an amazing event.
Thank you for these films, they bring back memories of a special year.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the footage. Yes, Lerwick Harbour is often at its best in those predawn hours. We were lucky at the Tall Ships to have such lovely nights.

Lovely footage, Maurice. Brings back very fond memories of when I was in Shetland during the centre for Nordic studies conference in 2014. All your boat videos are inspiring and great to see that these traditions Are kept alive. I really enjoyed the traditional Shetland Fiddle dance music and you exploring out skerries and looking into the history of the music. Keep up the traditions and don’t let them disappear, I’m glad the young generation are keeping it going. The Faroese chain dance and singing is still going strong. I’ve personal Faroese friends who are still keeping their traditions going. Keep up the wonderful work you do! Really appreciate these videos! Regards. Kenneth

Thanks so much for your comment Kenneth, it is good to hear that about the Faroese chain dance and singing. The boat is hauled up now for the winter, but time for some good music sessions with the nights drawing in.

Thanks for the footage. Love to see these old ships doing what they love, sailing! Probably a loose footed sail hurts a lot less than a boomed one.

Hi Maurice. Just come across your video now, and so glad I did. I was there when you were all playing that beautiful mesmerising tune at the end with the harp. Could you tell me the name of it and if I can download it anywhere please? Thanks for sharing, it's much appreciated, Karen.

Hi Karen, the tune is ‘Swan LK243’ composed by Catriona McKay on the harp. Fiddlers’ Bid recorded it on the album ‘Da Farder Ben da Welcomer’. It is also on Catriona McKay’s album ‘Starfish’. I can also recommend Catriona’s albums ‘Harponium’ and ‘Love in Secret’ if you want some stunning music.😊

@MauriceHendersonShetland that's great, thank you! I'll have a listen to those recommendations. It's such a wonderful sound from the harp, as with the fiddle too, of course! ☺️

Thank you for your efforts and for sharing. If you will permit me, I would love to see and hear footage from the (sixareen) that you are sailing in. Preferably using a dead cat to cut the wind noise. A great video nonetheless ❤

Thanks for your comment, glad you enjoyed the video. I have actually got a digital recorder and mic with dead cat this summer, so I hope to capture the sound of the sixareen under sail on a future trip. There was far too much conversation, general yarning and laughter that day for me to use the sound! I shall see how I get on with our next sailing trip.
