The yellow is yellow...for being visible under water. Red becomes black at depth. The whistle is the type of wistle normally hanging on our divests (BCDs) or on a safety-bouyancy-vest at sea.
All boats require signaling devices, air horns or regular whistles. If your air horn fails, broke or you didn't put it in your bag and you needed a whistle this will come through. Secondly any USCG or Marine Patrol inspection without such equipment will land you a violation/fine this knife on your person would save you from a costly ticket. Thirdly, I've been lobster diving and wandered too far from the the boat and I was waiving my arms, yelling to them and the wind and sun was just right where they could hear me or see me on the water. My dad and brother in law literally thought I was dead as they could find me despite only being maybe 300 feet away from them. I do feel the shrill sound of a whistle would have made the difference. Gimmick? I'm thinking it has a legitimate purpose. As for the blade steel and corrosion resistance, just 2 weeks ago I was in a hotel/water theme park and I decided to carry my Benchmade Griptillian in the water, well after 4 hrs my blade was beginning to show marks from the pool salt system. So, the steel might be softer, but if it doesn't rust that sounds like a win in my book. If I was to pick a Gimmick feature for this salt knife it would be the window breaker, how many windows are on the water? None, but I still like the feature, when off the water. The fail point would be if there is a spring in the striker assembly that isn't corrosion resistant.
How does it handle cutting a mess of fishing line? I’m considering this as a dive knife. Thanks for putting together a great videos with great detail, lighting, and audio.
Big fail no Cobra hood on that one. I carry the all black vg10 rescue assist everyday and I love that thing. What a cutting machine Yeah and I'm on a boat running fishing charters. But never really bought into the whole H1 steel idea. I'm not getting soaking wet with salt water. I never had a problem with the vg10. Plus I just like completely blacked-out folders. And I like the Cobra Hood it's easier to open quickly with gloves. I know how to sharpen serrations and I keep mine ungodly sharp all the time.
This knife IS a gimic. :) You can get serval other Spyderco knives with a serrated edge...even several from their Salt series. This knife is also expensive for a H1 steel knife just cuz it has GIMIC features e.g. "glass breaker"--do you actually think you're oing to put your hand through a window? Without slicing up your hands and arms? You'd need to be able to clear away the glass from ehe edges of the window... ...people are going to assume it's a kid iwth a whistle. :) Ignored...just any car alarm... You can get serveral knives iwth a better steel t...that is water resistant...LC200n eg.. Delica 4, Salt 2.....
Dude if your stuck at sea or in the woods. This is a great knife. Reviewer has never been in a survival situation. Straight blade at front is great to use with a ferro rod. If your giving it away your not worthy of a spyderco. Keep buying your cheap buck knives
