I work as a firefighter/EMT in a rescue company and that Benchmade Triage is my bread and butter. It gets used almost every tour. Use the strap cutter to remove clothing, not the blade. It's even faster than trauma shears and there is no danger of cutting the patient. Just hook the neck of their shirt and pull down. During a vehicle extrication it is quite common to encounter side curtain airbags in your way, right next to the patient's face. The serrated edge will make quick work of that and you don't have to worry about stabbing your patient. And finally, that blade works for prying. Benchmade may frown on that, I dunno. I use it to pry away the trim along the posts inside the vehicle to check for airbag cylinders and seatbelt tensioners before making cuts with hydraulic tools. Sure, there are tools better suited for that, but the knife is already in my hand because I used it to break the glass, cut the seatbelt, and remove the side curtain airbags. People that actually do this kind of work, this is your knife.

Looking at getting the hogue rescue which is similar to the benchmade. I carry a victorinox rescue tool right now. Can’t get enough gear for work lol 😆
I know it doesn’t have a knife on it, but the best rescue tool on the market is the Leatherman Raptor. It’s has so many uses and I find myself carrying it as my backup tool to my knife daily.
Okay I worked in Oakland as a paramedic for 30 years. The only thing I ever used to cut a seatbelt was a trauma shears. In terms of a knife, I used basic ones that I would get for around 20 to $25. I can't tell you how many of these things I lost on scene from crawling into cars to doing whatever it is that I was doing. Whatever basic knife was well built and had no play was what I used. I actually had a sog auto clip for about 15 years. But I often rotated it with basic imported knives I bought at Big 5. They all work just as well as any of these expensive ones. And I would never use any of these knives to cut a seatbelt or anything else. Trauma shears were always best. Those will cut through a penny.
It would be pretty great if you guys were able to add "carbide tip glass breakers" to the search criteria on the site. Would be a cool feature to sort by.

Nowadays I've seen multitools out there that are based around shears instead of pliers, but at first blush few seem robust enough (or have the right collection of other tools) to handle the workload required of a rescue tool that can also serve daily-use needs, or they just seem hokey. Maybe knife makers should try to explore this idea more often...
I know your comment is quite old but you should check out the leatherman raptor, I absolutely love it, ridiculously sharp trauma shears, glass breaker, ring cutter, O2 wrench and seat belt cutter plus they fold up.

As a left handed person I have found that liner locks are as ambidextrous as any other type of lock except an axis lock. I have no problem opening one left or right handed.

I carried a number of knives, but primarily a Victorinox Tinker for general use and a Benchmade Stryker drop point as the last big knife that I utilized. I never had any trouble cutting anything that needed cutting with either of those two knives. Glass breakers got more use, but were still superfluous to my needs. My baton broke any windows I needed to smash.
As far as I know, the Spyderco rescue3 has a glass breaker tip at the bottom of its handle. It is hidden in the handle and comes out if you squeeze the blade while it is folded. This review would have been greater if this feature would be shown. Fox 599 and some models have glass breaker tip at the top of their handles. You will have to reverse your grip to use the main blade after using the tip. Positioning breaker tip at the bottom like benchmade Triage would be easier and faster to use. One more thing. I see some knives with just normal stainless steel glass breaker tips. If the tip would not be made with carbide, the chance is that the tool will probably let you down on an emergency situation. It would be great if you would tell us the tip material for each model. Always thank you for your nice videos.
No mate, U're wrong. Spyderco ASSIST (not the Spyderco RESCUE 3) has a glass breaker that comes out of the handle if you squeeze it. It also has a built-in whistle in the handle. Have a good day
First it depends who the tool is for. It's different if you're the person doing the rescue compared to if you're the person in the car being trapped and there is no one around. 2018 Federal Regulation, all four sides of every car have to have laminated shatterproof glass and the only tool that's going to get you out of that car is the Victorinox rescue tool. I keep a Victorinox rescue tool and a Leatherman Raptor with my EDC IFAK.

I like hinderer harpoon tanto for this purpose. Guy was even a fire fighter and how he invented the lock bar stabilizer was once out on a call he over extended the lock bar when closing it due to adrenaline.
Thanks for a great video. I love my Gerber Hinderer, I just wish it was 10 to 15% smaller! As part of my EDC it really does a job on my knuckles reaching into my pockets, particularly in the winter.
The spine mounted disk,if not backed with an assistive spring, can be hem dragged to open as it leaves the pocket. It does not ha enough be CS overssized.
I belive the Swiss Army Rescue is the best of all.... the Blade is an great EDC, its my most used Knive ;D The Seatelt Cutter.... i used in Training (im a Volunteere Firerighter) and it works Great but i dont usw it just for fun. I want the Seatbelt / Clothes Cutter to be as sharp as Possible for the Moment its needed! ;D I allready have 2 of those (one in my Firefighter Gear, one Privat) and i gonna buy a Third one ;D
I got the statgear T3 with you need to put 6 pounds of weight on it for glass puncher to pop out. And seat belt cutter you have to pull out. Wonder what he would think of that one
I really liked my Buck Redpoint Rescue, but those are discontinued. What should be a quality replacement for this? I liked the way it locked and I was able to open it one handed, w/ gloves on. Thoughts?
I work as a marine hazmat technician so im on the water most of my time, i also provide swift water rescue so im looking for a knife that cuts through rope with ease ive gone through a few now where im sawing through rope for a minute or 2 which doesnt work for most of what i do is in a rush
@@thomasbednar7475 i ended up going with the aqua salt spyderco with a strait blade instead of the curved hawkbill and with serrated blade for rope. Works perfect cuts through the thickest rope like butter in one swipe and doesnt rust at all. Had a co worker buy the bryd brand which is the cheaper spydercos and his was the same as mine but stainless steel and he had to wash his every use. He forgot once and there was rust i never wash mine it’s perfectly fine

I’ve never even considered that Victorinox before but the saw for laminated glass is an excellent idea. Other companies should be doing it to.
I have the benchmade rescue knife that i keep in my back left pocket. Going to add the leatherman raptor rescue shears to the mix soon.
If you like The Benchmade, try "The Hogue/HK Trauma", also made in USA... it's even better, cheaper, and the company is 2A friendly, unlike Benchmade.

Everyone seems to be very fixated on seatbelt cutters just to open your eyes these things are much more used to cut clothes.
The problem with most of these aside from the benchmade is that none of the strap cutters are big enough to effectively cut clothing or shoes
