  • A quick review of my kayak fishing knife for the past 3 seasons, the Spyderco Dragonfly 2 Salt in H1 steel/serrated edge.
    I highly recommend any of the Spyderco H1 knives for fishing, esp saltwater fishing.

    Let me know if you guys would like to see a rod arsenal/review type video, I think I have a few interesting things to say re how I go about selecting rods...but would appreciate your feedback!

    Have been looking all over for a Salt vs Dragonfly Salt comparison, as well as plain edge vs serrated. Yours is the first one that mention the points. Very happy I came across your video! Thanks!

    I have that same blue Delica which get a lot of carry and I just ordered that same DF2 Salt serrated. Its going to be my beach/fishing knife and seems great for many uses.
    I did put a deep pocket clip on my delica & plan on putting a lanyard on the DF2.

    • @CookingandFishing

      So that Delica is at the bottom of the ocean for a couple of years now lol...great all around EDC for sure - if I ever lose my DF I'll probably check out the new LC200N Salts.

    Cool. I have the spyderco Salt H1 serated in yellow. I got it years ago after my leatherman rusted right away in my pfd.

    • @CookingandFishing
      @CookingandFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah I think being rust-proof is a requirement...for me at least. As far as I know, nothing comes close to H1 steel, esp in the hardened serrated edge for that

    • @m.p.2327
      @m.p.2327 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lc200n is probably the better solution.
      It gives you the edge retention of 154cm with about 95% of the corrosion resistance of h1.
      Vanax is even better(being a rust proof version of elmax), but sadly it's only available on expensive customs atm.

    I use the dragonfly salt with a plain edge, but I use when I fish on a boat. The reason I got one with a plain edge is for cutting line or opening bait packages/chum.

    • @CookingandFishing
      @CookingandFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the plain edge too, but in H1 steel it definitely needs more touching up than the serrated edge.

    • @MikeVideos327
      @MikeVideos327 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny you say that. Looking into serrated for exactly the reason of cutting the line.

    Thanks for the review, I have two H1 Salts and love them! But as you mentioned they are too large for bleeding fish, may invest in the Dragonfly. Rod review would be great.

    • @CookingandFishing
      @CookingandFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah check out the ladybug salt too, if I carried 2 knives the ladybug would be my bleeder!

      Cooking and Fishing Decided on the Dragonfly 2 with the straight edge. Just received it today and I have to say it’s the perfect size for bleeding fish. I have the full size H1 and it’s just too large.

    • @CookingandFishing
      @CookingandFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent! I'm curious to see how that straight edge H1 steel holds up. Maybe spyderco has improved the hardness in that edge...but either way it's a beautifully designed knife, small yet fits perfectly in hand, even with hard cutting tasks!

    • @snakemonkey555
      @snakemonkey555 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cooking and Fishing I will let you know. I’m pretty hard on my knives that’s why most (90%) of my knives have a straight edge...easy to sharpen vs serrated edge.

    • @CookingandFishing
      @CookingandFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can't really think of a reason for me to experiment further with kayak EDCs...maybe if I decide to pick up a fixed blade I'll look into the LC200N steels. I can tell you that H1 is 100% rust proof; I haven't washed that knife for the entire 2018 season and there is not one speck of rust anywhere.

    • @Mastermindyoung14
      @Mastermindyoung14 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CookingandFishing lc200n has dramatically better edge retention and is also rust proof. It's a much better steal imo

    How would you compare these to the Benchmade Griptilian H2O?

    • @CookingandFishing
      @CookingandFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've owned a couple of Griptilians, not a fan of axis lock in salt water. Also I feel much more comfortable using the spydie hole to deploy a knife than a thumb stud, esp wearing gloves or in distress. From what I read the N680 steel is also not "rustproof" the way H1 steel is. Just my 2 cents!

    • @CookingandFishing

      they are all pretty great, I wish they had a small serrated fixed blade, like a 3.5" blade with a light FRN handle. That would be near perfect!

  • @Engineer_Heathen

    I always wondered what the brand was of your knife. My knife is a piece of crap. I'm going to buy this one. It's a little pricey but should last awhile. I swear when you bleed a fish, the thing is like gushing blood. But when I bleed a fish, the damn thing is still alive 2 hours later lol. I gotta work on my technique I guess. I usually just cut across the gills.

    • @CookingandFishing
      @CookingandFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Different for each species, with fluke it's 75% success rate, unless you clip the tail too...if you nick that membrane under the gills, then quickly release pressure from your grip...they'll most bleed out. Get in water asap. Porgy/tog/salmonoids I lay them flat on the board and stab down and up until the blade is tickling their backbone. Sea robins, rake across the gills, gotta break through those rakers.

    • @snakemonkey555
      @snakemonkey555 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve been using my two Salt H1’s for a better part of ten years + (strictly saltwater fishing) and not one sign of rust on either one. Great knives and if taken care of, should last you a lifetime!

    • @Engineer_Heathen
      @Engineer_Heathen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cooking and Fishing okay so fluke it's a membrane under the gills, and blackfish/porgy lay on side and stab down to the backbone. I'll try that, thanks.

    • @Engineer_Heathen
      @Engineer_Heathen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      snakemonkey555 yeah I'm going to buy the dragonfly. You get what you pay for. Spend a little extra and will last a long time.

    Having said that... I’ve sharpened numerous commercial divers knives (Atlantic Salt) in the Gulf of Mexico. They are cutting hawser lines & yellow polypropylene line as well as various other materials. I’ve had one guys knife which was so dull it couldn’t cut bread. I strongly recommend using the Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker... but YOU MUST wash the metal deposits of your stones as directed.
    It’s been my experience personally as well as sharpening these H1 blades for divers, the blade is corrosion resistant yet soft and dulls quickly!!
    Nice knife but plain edge is always better.

    • @CookingandFishing
      @CookingandFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I generally prefer plain edge, all my other spydies are flat ground vg10...problem with H1, as you said, is how soft it is. For this particular application --- cutting gills and maybe, hopefully never, cutting lines in an emergency situation --- I like the serrated edge, simply because it's harder. Great tip on washing out metal deposits, I have the sharpmaker but haven't had to sharpen mine yet.

    If you act quickly you might just be able to score the new Native 5 serrated with LC200N steel that just came out. Perfect for the kayak.. i have one and it perfect for that purpose

    @jeremys8360 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    H1 steel is work hardened, which explains why it’s so much harder than the plane edge

    • @CookingandFishing
      @CookingandFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      you mean the serrated edge is work hardened? Or H1 steel in general?
