Yeah I'm not really sure what this guy's talking about, most of these issues seem self inflicted or at the very least inherited from whatever idiot he bought it from, regardless it's negativity for the sake of it and nothing more. I'm sorry you've had such experience with snobs, I've had the pleasure and apparently luck meeting some very passionate and knowledgeable people daily driving my full size, I wish you and your truck well.
I have two of them and the rust always starts in the same spots. I just love the look of them. They are definitely tight and hard to sit in for long periods of time. Also I love your door panels!
I have two J4000 jeep trucks 71' and 73' and daily driven the 73' for almost fifteen years with the 360 amc and t-15 manual transmission. It was a rough start at first because of transmission issues and no parts available. But later on I enjoyed every moment in it! It's now undergoing a total overhaul and going to get a 12 valve Cummins engine with manual 5 speed and np205 transfer case. Front axle is a Dana 60 and the rear a 70 with limited slip differential. You have a point about the rust , but if you have owned a Toyota land cruiser BJ ,40 ,42 or 45 then you actually know what rust is!😂
hunh...now give us 5 things you love. If you care to throw it away, I'll take it. I can make it work. I've only ever owned and driven late 70s Jtrucks and a few wags. I guess there is always a whiner in every group. Everyone waves at me. I never wave back.
FSJ actually means funny sized jeep... Rant is justified! We could all go into huge debt and buy a new jeep and deck it out... or just keep working on our funny jeeps and nobody will know what they are. Even thieves pass on them... That of coarse is an advantage though :).
Parts are very hard to get for these no doubt. There's a company called Alcan that can make you leaf springs that I used and really enjoyed them. I had dana 60 rear and 44 HD out of a j20 I swapped in and after the spring over and blocks in the back I needed something that rode better and had the lift I needed for 36s. There are panels that easily accumulate dirt behind the rear quarters that I ended up making drain holes for and cleaned them out to stop rust back there. J series have their quirks but I still wish I didn't sell mine. Not much beats the sound of that 401 with 390 heads in my opinion. Don't give up.
Thanks for the video, I love my 1974 J10 4.2L 258 AMC, but need new leaf springs. Base on the comment below from@elev8j10 Alcan make custom ones. How about that front suspension and differential on yours?
The rust is. Depending on how it’s kept if you find a listing of it in a garage then it’s mostly kept nice and clean but if it was kept in a old barn then it will have rust since it’s sitting in the grass or old rotting wood
And ur the type of guy who is critical of people breathing ur air...and occupying space that you don't own. People vent in different ways...people move...think...and exprese thier thoughts on different canvas....Ol' dude may have made this video to keep from kicking the dog that shit on the gun that he left dissasembled on the floor while he was cleaning it and a buddy called him from Osteen, needing a gasket.
People always want to buy my truck and immediately start telling me what they would want to do to it. Unaware that even though my truck isn’t for sale I definitely wouldn’t sell it to anyone that wanted to LS swap it or put it on another frame. AMC built one hell of a truck. It’s capabilities astound me. It’s not much short of a tank.
My 1985 J10 that I found on Ebay in Louisiana before hurricane Katrina doesn't have any rust through. The person listing it put it in the wrong location so I was able to get it cheap and that pissed him off but he had to sell it to me because I was the highest bidder. The cab has been on blocks in my 30 x 36-foot metal building for over 10 years. I drove it home to Virginia. The bed has been outside with a camper top on it for the same length of time and it still doesn't have surface rust. I have the tailgate and the original step bumper. I have a rebuilt 4.2 L engine on an engine stand and a Howell EFI kit to do the conversion. I am just now getting around to giving it a new paint job and putting it back together.
Do you understand or appreciate the word "patina", refferencing your comment? Put the damn thing back together and enjoy it for what it is! If you bought it as an investment, its probably worth more running, than a pile of parts...if anything...reassembly might get you away from the daily grind for a bit. If there is no rust...put the bolts back in...If there is rust...and no money to pay somebody to repair a speck around the highbeam switch...do aome research and DIY....vinegar and steel wool can do amazimg things.
Thank you for all the info on your truck. I have a 1971 J2000 thrift side that I just dropped a Cummins 4BT in and am about to start on a full frame off restoration on. Any additional tips and info will be much appreciated. Can you please tell me what the bolt pattern and center bore is on the wheels. Thank you!
I’m not sure what the bore is but they are black rhino offshoots 15x10 6x5.5 lug pattern A 4bt will be awesome in there.. that was one of the motors I considered it was just a little pricey for me.
My axles are upgraded internally but they are factory axles. Some of the j trucks had 5 lug axles I believe they are 5x5.5 pattern and they should have a large center bore to clear the hub lockouts.
The audacity to call the J10 the worst because it has rust shows you don't have knowledge about vehicles especially this one. It's a 40 year old vehicle, my dodge which is 20 years younger than this has more rust on it because it was originally living in Pennsylvania, and you can't find aftermarket parts for this truck because it's not a very common truck to come across, most are either rotting in someone's backyard, sitting in a junkyard, or maybe if you're lucky, on marketplace.
I have a 1966 J-2000 I fit under the wheel because the seat springs are shot. The AMC Hornet L6-232 power steering fits my L6. Rust and tailgate are facts. Ty.
Hi Ryan, I also have a 1966 Jeep J - 2000 with the 232 straight six and 3 speed transmission. In 1993 my cousin Bob and I did a complete rebuild on it from the cab back, all new Chevy truck frame, rear springs, gas tank etc. I recently had both front springs replaced. They were manufactured by the Palmer Spring Co. of Providence , Rhode Island from scratch using the old springs as a pattern. This truck used to be my Dad's and is still my plow truck in winter. The pickup body was replaced with one from a 1977 Jeep ( 7'-0" length ). These old Jeeps are way tougher than any of this new generation trucks selling for $ 80,000.00 or more.
@@phillipbouchard4197 A lot of memories! Pls. tell me the Chevy truck frame used..?! looking to improve on gas tank capacity and motor mounts. the optional frame would accommodate all mentioned in one shot. Thanx in advance!
@@Ryan33T35 Hi Ryan, The Chevy frame we used on the Jeep was from a 1993 one - half ton model and it fit perfectly inside of the existing Jeep frame. We slid it in 1'-0" and cut a doubler out of a section we were not going to use to allow us to double plate the joint which was thru-bolted and welded together. All told the joint is one-half inch thick steel and has held up well all these years since the rebuild even being out in the salt for snow plowing. The gas tank we used was a 22 gallon replacement tank from Jeep which goes under the pickup bed just behind the cab. The nice thing about the Chevy frame was their bends were similar to the original Jeep frame which made our construction project much easier. I even got lucky on the purchase price - an even trade for a pickup bed mounted roll bar that came with the pickup body I bought which I was not going to use anyway. I found a 1977 pickup body in a local junkyard that was in real good shape and it fit the 1966 perfectly. Hope this information helps you with your project.
@@phillipbouchard4197 👍 I'm considering mainly for the xmission keeping a std drive but with o.d. more than a 1:1. So its not running 4k rpm. at 65 mpram. This is all info that is lost if not shared and much appreciated!
@@Ryan33T35 Hi Ryan, It sounds like you intend to do some highway traveling with your truck and if so, going with an overdrive will save your driveline for the long haul. My Jeep is pretty much retired as I save it for the hard work of plowing snow for which it's low gearing and slow speed is optimum. My Crown Victoria wagon's and 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis take care of the rest as they all have overdrive transmissions.
I got an 86' J20, it was shipped to west coast and came from FLA, so that road rash on the quarter panels is standard issue. I plan to graft in a new bed and patches with new metal. Carb is easy fix, had the same one on my 82' Wagoneer Limited, go to NAPA, they got a rebuild for $50 bucks. For sure the stick in your is a problem but the automatic is the way to go in an FSJ to begin with. I just got my steering column rebuilt by the Great Guys at JW Autowreckers near Sac, CA, they even had a wiring harness for my J20. FSJ are the best trucks ever built, highly sought after, I would never trade from an import lol Loyal Jeepathonian in Nevada Cheers 🍻 to FSJs
I disagree, These are the best attributes of the J-10. I just picked up a '81 Honcho, the truck I've wanted since I was eleven years old. Mine was sitting a field for years and fires right up every time. AMC built these this way for a reason, they small and tough and run forever. You don't need 36" tires to get through the woods, just common sense and driving skills. If you want a square body, get one, then you'll be just like every classic truck owner.
Had a 1981 jeep j10 automatic and I loved that truck but I was young and it was a snow plow truck since it was made in 81 and could t afford the repairs for it.. so I sold it to a mechanic for cheap and now I'm back in the market for one but damn they are hard to find... I really don't want any other truck.
Okay this is very interesting about your snow plow truck! I am just getting ready to go buy one. That is the same exact description. Same year everything and was a former snow plow truck. I'm buying it from an older mechanic who has to sell it as he's become a little bit ill. He's already done a bunch of work on it but he's retiring and moving into an RV. I wonder if it's the same truck you used to own???? I came onto TH-cam to do some researching.
I'd add that it's safe to say many trucks of the era now have rust . Gm truck beds 61 to 66 including the cab do have serious rust out . 68 to 72 chevy pickups have lots of rust issues all throughout the cabs lower structure . This J10 here looks to have been in a wet or other poor environments that has rusted much of this truck . My 72 has none of this rust as shown in this video . However the bed seam rust is a prevalent issue with Jtrucks . The wheel backspace issue is again Due to design for a narrow track JEEP truck , not a chevy ford or dodge .
I agree with the small cab, and hard to find parts…but I wouldn’t get rid of mine for anything. I have at least 5 people a week risk pulling into my drive way (I am in AK, that is very risky business if you don’t have permission to be there) to ask if I will sell it. It seems most guys know what they are up here. It is no rustier than my 70’s Ford or my buddies 70’s Chevy.
How’d you go about replacing the stereo? I’ve got a 87 and I’ve got no idea how to go about wiring an aftermarket stereo since there’s no aftermarket harnesses
I didn’t use any of the factory wiring.. you’ve just got to hook up positive and negative for power then run speaker wire to every speaker.. it’s easier than it seems.. should be a diagram that comes with your stereo.
Ya it was from a yj wrangler.. I actually bolted it through the roof (I don’t recommend) i couldn’t find any other way to mount it… I actually removed I’d because I hit my head on it but I’m 6,4 so if your shorter it’ll probably be fine. But they wire up really easy just positive and negative wire for each speaker.
@@brokenpoortradingco sweet! Might have to try that because other then the doors there’s no where else for speakers on my 87 j20. Cool! Love your headliner and door panels too, watched those videos and looks like it saves a ton of money, headliners and door panels are stupid expensive for what’s essentially car board
Thanks.. you can also cut a hole and mount speakers in the b pillar. That’s probably what I’ll do since I removed the sound bar.. maybe I’ll make a video of it when I get around to it lol
I have one, it was in terrible shape, and I was able to replace everything easily, including aftermarket suspension, brakes, gaskets, trim, even clutch rod that was all boogered up from some terrible abuse in the past. It's a horrid truck, sounds like it's going to die all the time, can't hit 65 without floating the valves, but it's also 44 years old, will shreek the 33 inch mud tires in first it has so much torque, and people love it. Oh, and it starts every time, climbs hills just fine, and idles like a brand new car, doesn't overheat in the GA summers (I do, it doesnt) Plus, unlike all the ragged out common chevy and ford trucks, I am the only person in the entire region I live in that has one.
Hey dude how's going. First of all, nice truck, im looking forward to get one of these and dress this baby with 35" shoes but here in Argentina our law says the distance from the bumper to the floor must be 18" max. It's very low compared to usa so Idk if It'll go beyond 18 or not. Would you be up to measure the distance from the rear/front bumper of your truck to the floor? Would be really helpful
BJS OFFROAD IS WAY TOO EXPENSIVE. 2 things I'd add are every fsj i hate the vacuum for everything, most the time nothing works. Second would be every fsj I've owned has had shitty electrical problems.
lmao my dad has the one thats considered rare to find most dont have it you have the J10 he has the J4000 its a beast of a truck its how you take care of it and you have to think about it not alot of guys where taller back then so it was perfect for them verse the days we are in now so its a perfectly fine truck
Why do you own it? You clearly aren't the kind of person that should own it. As for your carburettor complaint, none of you with such complaints have ever neglected your fuel injection that way.
You can stop the whining. If you used it for what it was intended to do? It is a great truck. I had a j10. Now I have a j20. We use it like a tractor on our farm. It always starts and pulls like a herd of horses. I would agree. Not the most comfortable unit. But, if I want comfort? I will get in my Expedition. And, by the way. If you need to help with the fuel problem you are complaining about? Put an electric fuel pump and a predator carb. On it. Problem solved. And, there are lift kits for it. The best advice, as one poster commented. Sell it..............
I owned from new a 1977 J10 Honcho. With 401 4bbl. Best truck I ever owned. Regret to this day not keeping it. It had a ton of room in the cab. I'm 6'2. The power was awesome. So I respectfully disagree with your assessment.
I was child i seen like your truck i remember my dad, but he die, after worked n go home he ride wagonerr so sorry my chief mecanical their office in 1972 i always remeber n sadnes some time he got licht truck jeep
your doing alot of complaining that none of us has ever had issues especially with a mid size truck that you like to claim "the worst truck" ever made, but in all seriousness just sell it if you dont like old technology that seems to last a long time🤦
Buddy it"s a JEEP they are smaller for off road trails . Why do you own it if you hate it ? The cab may not be too small . It might be you .that"s to big . Looks like you could stand to miss a meal or two .Just sayin .
You're ridiculous. Before you bought it, did you sit in it? Did you look under the hood? Did you look at the rust? Go buy something new. You have no business owning a classic truck.
They’re all rusty😂it’s because they actually got driven for what they were intended for if you wanna complain about rust EVERY single truck and car in New England is plagued with rust lol zero real complaints 😂
they really are monumental piles of crap but i can't quit mine, it's like an old pair of socks that i just can't throw away, and besides, my carter BBD is getting 20.5 mpg on my 258 and that alone makes it worth keeping
12 is not bad...considering the whining bitching bastard that has his foot on the throttle. MPG is the thermomenter in the babys butt as far as engine condition is concerned...and your foot and proper maintinace is the batt that you beat it with...Do you air up ur tires before ya leave Wild cat lake for the 40 mile trip back to Astor?
Thank you for this video, this is PRECISELY what I was looking for! Lol. I've loved the look of the J10 ever since I saw it in the movie Twister as a kid. The lifted 4x4 with the roll bar looks awesome. I'm in the market for an older truck & don't mind restoring one, but this is exactly what I needed to know. I look at old F150's & there are a million parts & they are dirt cheap. I figured the J10 would lack support & parts & this confirmed it. Maybe I'll get one some day, but this really isn't going to work for me rn.
Lol twister got me hooked too..they are still my favorite classic truck but they have their issues.. you can find parts for them but not nearly as easy as a F150 or c10
Thats my favorite calssic truck.. no other like this and All of them rust no matter w@ht thecbrand is sir!!! Is unique Is beautiful And is very 4x4 capable..
Currently doing a rebuild and this isn’t true about this I’ve have found loads of companies for this car and at an average price to so don’t over exagerate
Carburetors work great and exactly the way they were designed to. You just dont know how to use it properly. If fuel prices were no object, Id take a carb over fuel injection any day.
So why did you get it if you hate it so much? Go get something you want. You got a dud. You can replace/ rebuild carburetors. Like Most old stuff, fun to look at not as fun to drive.
All these “issues” are petty 😂

hunh...now give us 5 things you love.
I would sell it then if I didn't like it
carbs arent the problem, your lack of tuning ability is
If you hate it so bad why do you have 1
But on a good note. This is one of the best looking Jeeps ever made. It may be weird and uncomment but will never be bad to look at
Very true.. that’s the main reason I have it.. I’ll go over the stuff I like in a future video
I’m not giving up yet lol I still love the truck despite its flaws
I'm 6 1 and have hit my head a few times getting in and out of mine. But I still live the truck
Hey those are all the reasons I like mine! Get rid of that Weber carburetor and you’ll have a lot better time running it.
Ya I’m definitely going to.. I’m planning on doing a holly sniper on it eventually or possibly try to use a factory fuel injection off a 4.0
Mine and my fathers’s ‘83 J10 has almost zero dust. They only known rust is right under the high beam light switch, it’s very little though.
Thanks for the video, I love my 1974 J10 4.2L 258 AMC, but need new leaf springs. Base on the comment below from@elev8j10 Alcan make custom ones. How about that front suspension and differential on yours?
I feel your pain when it comes to parts availability because it is the exact same thing for my 71 AMC Javelin
The rust is. Depending on how it’s kept if you find a listing of it in a garage then it’s mostly kept nice and clean but if it was kept in a old barn then it will have rust since it’s sitting in the grass or old rotting wood
You're the type of guy to own a camaro and complain about the size
Well they do have a small cab for being a land yacht and the doors are annoying long
He should go buy a Toyota Corolla and forget about working on classic vehicles...this guy may not have too many tools he IS the tool.
Ha, you have a I6, mines a 360 big block
ive had couple super wagoneers one m715 my daily driver was 76 cherokee chief s wide track on 40's the last one was a j4000
Thank you!
I’m not sure what the bore is but they are black rhino offshoots 15x10 6x5.5 lug pattern
A 4bt will be awesome in there.. that was one of the motors I considered it was just a little pricey for me.
@@brokenpoortradingco my j2000 is a 5 bolt and I’ve not been able to find any solid info on google. I’m assuming that you upgraded your axles?
My axles are upgraded internally but they are factory axles. Some of the j trucks had 5 lug axles I believe they are 5x5.5 pattern and they should have a large center bore to clear the hub lockouts.
Measure your bolt pattern and go from there.@@thisisatest4947
My first vehicle was one of these. It had a big eagle on the hood. 1978 if i recall.
Also you want a tailgate? I have the original tailgate still just has a custom handle since the original broke.
If you're not like it maybe a option to sell it🤔
Jeep are build from all kind of different parts and are a different kind of truck!
throw a weber on it and your good. never had a problem with my weber and the 258
my dad owned about 13 of them. i got a couple. not j10's though. got a j4000 and a couple j20s
Any of the j20s for sale?
You are aware that truck was designed before you were born
I got an 86' J20, it was shipped to west coast and came from FLA, so that road rash on the quarter panels is standard issue. I plan to graft in a new bed and patches with new metal. Carb is easy fix, had the same one on my 82' Wagoneer Limited, go to NAPA, they got a rebuild for $50 bucks. For sure the stick in your is a problem but the automatic is the way to go in an FSJ to begin with. I just got my steering column rebuilt by the Great Guys at JW Autowreckers near Sac, CA, they even had a wiring harness for my J20.
FSJ are the best trucks ever built, highly sought after, I would never trade from an import lol
Loyal Jeepathonian in Nevada
Cheers 🍻 to FSJs
The wheel backspace issue is again
Due to design for a narrow track JEEP truck , not a chevy ford or dodge .
And yeah, those body lines gather water and it rusted bad in the bed but the cab is ok but I need a new floor
If you didn't get the memo on this truck, which is a good truck in it's time, and if you want to criticize it,why did you buy it to complain about it?.
🤔1985 J10 Honcho and a 1980 J20 that I’m still using 🧐… he’s correct on every issue 🤪🤣🤣👊
@@brokenpoortradingco as for the sound bar you had in that thing did you just pull one from a wrangler?
Does anyone know what the 3 websites you can get some accessories
Sorry to disappoint you Sir! But , we are Not going to make this anymore.
I have a Ram megacab. My son's J-20, rusty as it is, is more comfortable and just as dependable.
if you get an 83 Laredo it has a bigger cab and better seats and damn look at all those aftermarket parts.
Hey bro that’s build before your grandfather 👴
By and large, AMC never rust-proofed their vehicles like the others did.
I like J10's life got in the way and I never got one
Bro is geeked he said what about carburetor dis dood
BJS OFFROAD IS WAY TOO EXPENSIVE. 2 things I'd add are every fsj i hate the vacuum for everything, most the time nothing works. Second would be every fsj I've owned has had shitty electrical problems.
lmao my dad has the one thats considered rare to find most dont have it you have the J10 he has the J4000 its a beast of a truck its how you take care of it and you have to think about it not alot of guys where taller back then so it was perfect for them verse the days we are in now so its a perfectly fine truck
You're an XL sized person in a 1970's sized truck.
So... just classic trucks in general? Everything you complained about is something that all these trucks have in common.
J10 was a MidSize truck. It was never marketed as a full size.
Keep up with the positive thoughts! Get rid of it!
Why do you own it? You clearly aren't the kind of person that should own it.
As for your carburettor complaint, none of you with such complaints have ever neglected your fuel injection that way.
Honestly I love that no body knows what an FSJ is. Its different. I like that. The whole jeep wave and ducking b.s. is stupid.
You're just not a truck guy. They aren't for everyone.
It’s not All.. it’s where they live their who lives.. seems like it’s just not for you.
Come on dude! That is a real truck! Would you rather drive one of those pieces of shit made today?
every truck that runs is worth a thousand dollars.. Sell that thing
NO YOU PRETTY MUCH NAILED IT
You sure did a lot of work on it to hate it so much
your doing alot of complaining that none of us has ever had issues especially with a mid size truck that you like to claim "the worst truck" ever made, but in all seriousness just sell it if you dont like old technology that seems to last a long time🤦
if you are complaining about it how about you give that jeep to me, i will be happy with it, all the issues you name up are petty.
I'm 6,5 and 315 and fit in my j20 with no issue 😂😂
The folks that drive the JKs and new crap have no clue about “the Jeep wave 👋 “ ...they may as well be driving a Carollla
Cool truck even if it is a tad small for you, nice build 👍
Buddy it"s a JEEP they are smaller for off road trails . Why do you own it if you hate it ? The cab may not be too small . It might be you .that"s to big . Looks like you could stand to miss a meal or two .Just sayin .
If you hate it so much get rid of it cry baby
You're ridiculous. Before you bought it, did you sit in it? Did you look under the hood? Did you look at the rust? Go buy something new. You have no business owning a classic truck.
They’re all rusty😂it’s because they actually got driven for what they were intended for if you wanna complain about rust EVERY single truck and car in New England is plagued with rust lol zero real complaints 😂
What a whiner. I've had a dozen various jeeps and I absolutely loved the pioneer 4.3 auto ps pb air .. versatile 4x4
they really are monumental piles of crap but i can't quit mine, it's like an old pair of socks that i just can't throw away, and besides, my carter BBD is getting 20.5 mpg on my 258 and that alone makes it worth keeping
Lol.. ya it’s still my favorite truck despite its flaws.. I wish I got that good of mileage I only get about 12 or so.
Why do you complain about a carb in an old pickup?
Frame thickness wass the issues.
Do a video on the things you like about it
#6- very little content out there. Keep up the good work.
Very true.. thanks
How tall are you? Trying to figure out the legroom for a 6 foot tall fella.
You should be fine I’m 6’4 it’s a little tight but not too bad
this truck was sized to people that were born in the great depression when kids didn't eat every day. They weren't many men over 5'9 or 150 lbs.
Thats my favorite calssic truck.. no other like this and
All of them rust no matter w@ht thecbrand is sir!!!
Is unique
Is beautiful
And is very 4x4 capable..
Currently doing a rebuild and this isn’t true about this I’ve have found loads of companies for this car and at an average price to so don’t over exagerate
Lmao....for someone that's bitching about his fsj.....he's got a real nice fsj. I wish my J2000 was as nice as his truck
Would take it over my gladiator
Carburetors work great and exactly the way they were designed to. You just dont know how to use it properly. If fuel prices were no object, Id take a carb over fuel injection any day.
So why did you get it if you hate it so much? Go get something you want. You got a dud. You can replace/ rebuild carburetors. Like
Most old stuff, fun to look at not as fun to drive.
lol, tell us what you're really feeling! just beat that pile and enjoy the thrashing! oh, i got that tiller going so.....
Oh I will.. cool beans
Lot this guy is obviously trolling.
Accurate whining
