Zero superfluous affectation. Zero unnecessary facial expressions and such. I love John Williams’ style of playing so much. It isn’t about him it’s about the composer

For such a mellow soft spoken person Williams produces a massive sound. So much power. And for his era had the greatest technical
    command of any classical guitarist.

he approaches with great respect and seriousness the composer whose piece of music he performs. It's something he knew how to do in his own unique personal way. Something that many people may not have understood even after so many years. He always gave me the impression in his performances that he wanted to highlight the composer first (through the Guitar) and himself last. Certainly a great, well-rounded personality, not only in the guitar or music world but also more widely.

That 4th sonata, the control and the attack and the timing, was astonishing. That's as well as a classical guitar can be played I'd say.

What I'm about to say may be a bit of a sacrilege for some but, in my opinion, the static only adds to the warmth of the guitar. Marvellous performance.

First, thanks to those who took the effort to preserve and share this! Much better to have what we have here than nothing, that much is certain. Still, between the background noise and the mechanically induced flutter/wow, I found myself wanting to hear something a little closer to the original source transcription (which, after all, might have considerable flaws, too).
Anyway, none of that should be considered a criticism of those who went to the effort of copying and supplying this for the rest of us to hear. Despite everything, the 'signal' of Williams' fine playing comes through.

My teacher used to say it was all about the focus on the rhythm that made him incredible. Segovia was great but he took a lot of liberties with the rhythm. John always let you know where the 1 was. He rhythm is immaculate

Of course they aren’t all playable on guitar, but Scarlatti wrote some 800 of these for harpsichord. All the ones that I’ve heard are quite difficult to memorize due to the near similarity of the variations. They were
rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th Century- missing for some 200 years.

If you listen, Freddy Mercury lifted the beginning notes and a descant later for slow parts of Bohemian Rhapsody before he sings "I just killed a man" and before "it really doesn't matter". He was classically trained, so he must have encountered this piece.
