John Williams Plays pieces of BWV1006a by J.S.Bach
Unfortunately, there is no video of the Bouree and Gigue.
John Williams, He is my hero to me.
Especially the performances from the 1970s that no one can imitate.
But I feel like he's not the best condition and he lacks concentration a bit.
I would like to hear your impression,Thank you.

One of his favorite composers D.Scarlatti , with the first commentary.
John Williams Plays 8 Italian renaissance pieces 1977

John rarely plays renaissance, but He played eight pieces of Galilei on this stage.
John Williams Aranjues with Andre Previn 1977

Most of the time he lowers the strumming of the second movement by an octave, but on this stage he plays the original. This is probably due to Previn's request.

This piece was transcribed from the record that John Williams recorded in 1978.
I saw him play it live in the 70's and due to the accoustics of the hall, he played it the slowest I've ever heard him play it but he also focused much more on the lines and I though it sounded great in the bouncy acoustics of that hall.
John is absolutely amazing...and so humble
I miss John Williams and Julian Bream recitals on Sunday mornings. RIP JB
The master !
Amazing - takes me back to how TV used to be so well informed
Williams legendary technique, actually not much followed today. his total precision and nuances, his Fleta, the film direction, the orchestral applomb under Previn baton, the elegant applause of the audience and, last but not least, the John modesty, make this Aranjuez the most memorable. Grazie from Italy!
Greatest Classical Guitarist Alive. Bach Scarlatti Sor Giuliana Augustin Barrios Villa Llobos You name them, he's played them to utter precise perfection.
John Williams is the 🐐 of classical guitar.
John Williams is the 🐐
i saw john play this in the uk with simon rattle conducting in the 1980s, amazing guitarist.
perfect technique, absolutely no tension. amazing.
Wonderful and peaceful music for the soul
Zero superfluous affectation. Zero unnecessary facial expressions and such. I love John Williams’ style of playing so much. It isn’t about him it’s about the composer
I never had the opportunity to hear him play live, and I'm sure what you pointed out is translated into his live performances. I love his "clinical" approach too.
JW is a badass not just for the incredible playing but that he just refused to wear a tuxedo. I love that about him!
For such a mellow soft spoken person Williams produces a massive sound. So much power. And for his era had the greatest technical command of any classical guitarist.
This video is bach.. ehh... back !
Id love to see the full concert if its on video
It's bad enough to play this music on other than a keyboard, but to deliver such cold and expressionless performances is insufferable on any instrument.
Bad take
Even Vladimir Horowitz made a few mistakes sometimes. Williams is in the same class!
John does something not many guitarists do with this piece,...he plays it at a good tempo and doesnt rush through it. Just about every other performance of this piece I have heard was played at blistering speed like it was a race from start to finish. John plays it with perfect tempo where you can actually enjoy the notes and the phrasing.
Does anyone know the K numbers of the second and third sonatas ?
The second is K. 159, originally in C major. The third, K. 208, in A major as Williams played.
Quite a number of fluffs for JW. Maybe it was the first piece on the program and it took a bit to get into full flow. I'm always amazed at his sitting position; almost on the edge of the chair, leaning forward with the guitar pointing to the floor - looks rather uncomfortable. Lucky enough to have seen him in concert quite a number of times over the years, one could always just sit back and enjoy it as he was always in control. With JulianB I was always a nervous wreck as he continually seemed to be on the verge of collapse, exciting though!
imo, that old Fleta has an action you could put your hand under! And not the best tuning machineheads/nut alignment either (you hear the 'clicks' when he tunes). Actions have dropped some in recent days. Especially when attempting pieces like this (at speed). It helps a lot.
aw the bouree and the gigue are gorgeous
Wait... this exists?!? Even with the last 2 movements missing this is still gold. Man I wish I could hear the Gigue from this performance though... all the same, thank you for uploading!
John Williams has nerves of steel too , the conductor knew as john walked out he would produce the good s cause can you imagine the pressure, !!!! but he is so incredibly well trained he can withstand it all with ease , just amazing
Bravo, John Williams! Oh, how far the BBC has sunk.
Williams= scumbag!
How come?
he approaches with great respect and seriousness the composer whose piece of music he performs. It's something he knew how to do in his own unique personal way. Something that many people may not have understood even after so many years. He always gave me the impression in his performances that he wanted to highlight the composer first (through the Guitar) and himself last. Certainly a great, well-rounded personality, not only in the guitar or music world but also more widely.
Well what to say? Williams isn't my favorite guitarist, but his artistry is beyond question. The notes are always pure and there, even in the least inspired performances. In this case it is more evident the technical precision of Williams, some moments a little mechanical, but in Bach that's more than enough ! So this is still a Prelude, so demanding, and three dances from Bach's Suite IV so clean that many other versions pale in comparison! Also, the sound pickup is that of the time and not so professional, (I guess only from the camera microphone?) but in any case not well mixed: normal cell phone today is likely more faithful. So this remains a professional and nice live Bach on the guitar without compromises ! A lesson after 50 years or so...
First : the Fleta John plays here, is the best guitar I've ever heard, although I am a great Smallman fan... Second: when John plays it, what do we want more ? He is the hero and will ever be...
Show!
Excuse me
Wow!
♥️♥️♥️
How delightful! 😊♥️🌹
Englishman I know are offended if you call them European
I think John Williams did not get enough attention during his career. He is one of my favorites
Is there a video of this that actually SURVIVED!?!
Can someone help me find this: In 2003, I saw on the internet a video of a Spanish man playing Barrios' La Catedral, and using a pick instead of his fingers. He did a perfect job even though playing that piece with a pick is absurdly difficult. The guitar, if I remember, was very small, probably a lute. Lost the video during the next 20 years. Many thanks to anybody who can point me toward that video again.
Unbelievable, really.
When you hear that static hum of the 70s, you know it’s gonna be good. Well it’s John, of course it’s gonna be good
God knows why he is playing those hideous Oz guitars. If he bought a Yamaha everyone would follow suit.
He was born in oz ,but ya the fleta has such a sweet voice in his hands , smallman more volume
When The BBC was real broadcaster and not the disgrace it is today.
He would be 21 here. I'm sure that's a Fleta. They were beautiful sounding guitars.
