The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoffee.com/juliejmo...
ROUND-BREAKING AI BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE - NEW EXHIBITION UNVEILS THE UNTOLD STORY OF A GILDED AGE AMERICAN HEIRESS.
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition will explore Alberta's formative years in America, her upbringing in Chicago and New York, and the significance of her inheritance. Visitors will unravel the captivating courtship between Alberta and George Montagu, the future 9th Earl of Sandwich, leading to their marriage in 1905 in London. The narrative will culminate with her relocation to Hinchingbrooke House, the original family seat, in 1916 as the new Countess, following the death of the 8th Earl of Sandwich.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.

I couldn't help hearing Luke's voice in his cousin & there is a similarity in their features as well. I really enjoyed watching this episode again.
I had not seen this before. It was beautiful. I love the history behind each door and room, the gardens, the abbey…so quiet and serene. You can almost hear the footsteps of the monks…thank you Julie!
Thank you so much!
What an absolutely wonderful time I had watching this! Lord Montagu and Lady Mary were most delightful tour guides, and this beautiful property and its history are now among my favorites! Thank you so much Lady Julie! Best vlog ever!
Julie, can you explain the family connection again?
Julie always does such a wonderful job of bringing out the storytelling and making the conversation flow so naturally and comfortably. She brings out the people stories from the art, architecture, and history so well.
This is by far my favorite episode! If I was there I would never want to leave! I ticked all my boxes! The castle ,the medieval history. The calm of the monestary. The boatyard! The ice box! The well! Just the beautiful property! Thank you Julie for taping this! Yay for family lol!😂❤
That was, as Julie would say, “bee-yooo-tee-full” and fannn-Tass-tic! Thanks for reposting.
I Have To Say, It Was SO Amazing To See Julie Driving That Car N Seeing A Modern Space Age Monorail Go By Behind Her/Them!)))lololol
That green and red car Is a Treasure thank you for sharing with us. And that museum amazing.
Oh my the historical record of this beautiful castle 🏰 💞💞💞
I loved this episode for its interpreting history and preservation of what the family have inherited.
Julie, can you please show us a family tree and how Lord Montagu and your husband are related , I must have missed the connection, loved the video and learned so much from the lord. Love all the old cars . Thanks again Lindab
Will do soon!
Well Julie at least it was close to being a “closed course” happy motoring 🤭
Thank you Julie! Much love from Metro Detroit! You are living this Americans dreams ❤
Viscountess you are truely amazing, a great addition to the Montague family and certainly a savour of aristocratic history. Thank you for a most wonderful episode, take care and god bless 👍😇🙏🏰

❤️Jacqueline from across the pond
Thank you so much!
I've been to Beaulieu and this was a wonderful tour of things I didn't get to see. It's a wonderful place. Thank you! ❤
I'd watch 2 more episodes on this house! There is so much more to see! I live in Seattle, USA and it will be so hard for me to see this in my life!
What a lovely and kind Man. This would have to be my favorite. 😊
oh wow !! Tremendous history ....absolutely rivetted by its beauty and awed by its living preservation. THANK YOU FOR THE TOUR❤ X
I really enjoy the theme music.
As an American (Texan specifically) I appreciate your excitement so much!! I feel it through the screen and so would love to see all these historic estates!! Exiting indeed if you love history!!
What a hoot! It reminds me of the one time I drove a tractor and ploughed up a fence.
In the 90s we visited a home that was once an Abbey and had a car museum. I wonder if it was this one. Unfortunately, I can not remember furnishing, which I am sure has changed in almost 40 years. While I was going through one room, I smelled incense. I went to every bowl of dried flowers and none of them smelled like what I was smelling. Then I saw a sign on my way out that many people smell incense in that room.
Another masterful presentation of a historic building and family.. This property in particular was in the early years of its opening subject to a lot of nonsense, particularly about the house, so I really appreciated the straightforward explanation of what it really represents.
I often wonder if William would has or would do with Catherine and his children on private family time to visit his past families history of going thru and staying a few days at all these gorgeous palaces or homes. To think of how his children would love to see those cars and boat buildings and Catherine's love of sailing. They'd be in glorious wonder ❣️❣️
American Viscountess, Subscribed because your content is fantastic!
A truly wonderful video on your channel. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Another very interesting vlog I only wish it didn’t have to end.
Thank you for sharing 🙏
You know how you watch a movie and you think to yourself, No other actor couldve possibly played this role. Thats the way it is watching Julie. No other person couldve posdibly taken her role and do what she does. Just the perfect person for it all. Kudos to you Luke for marrying her!! 😅
Wonderful presentation.
How very Audrey Hepburn in that gorgeous car ❤
So much interesting information (and fun).
While this was fun to see, we would love to how Pitchford Hall is coming along. Please go back to some castles that you've been to so we can see the progress. 😊
I sincerely hope that you read the comments. I enjoy your series immensely. I live in New Zealand and I have watched this episode due to the fact that I am a member of the Scott clan. With the Beccleuch? and Montagu connection I without you, I would never some of my ancestral history. By the way love your left hook blue Corvette!! 😂😂❤❤
Thank you! And yes I do read as many as I can! X Julie
I as well related to the Scotts . I like to think that we are lovely mixtures of our ancestors. Blessings
I have never seen this episode.. So good! Thankyou!
Shakespeare used the Montague name in Romeo and Juliet.
Looking all the greatness all of historical site in one particular area.. is magnificent. What a lovely episode. I'd love to see more video
Fascinating! We have an old community Ice House, in historic Glen Rose, Texas, downtown. The local spring is located down the street at the old mill house. Find these places absolutely amazing! Thank you for the wonderful journey! 🩷🌿💚

Well this is my first time seeing this as I am new, I’m enamored 😍. I love antiques and especially old cars, we have a place here in Michigan, “ the Henry Ford Museum and greenfield village, that has old cars that you can drive, so much fun 😊❤ and of course I was loving the Corvette you were driving at the beginning as I used to build Corvette’s in Kentucky 😊
Thanks Julie , so fascinating
Take care,
Susie in Michigan

Oh this was a fun one. How long have I been watching (and subscribing), probably too long!
love the castle and the car
Another great show Julie🥰😊
Thank you! 🤗
Hey do you what’s a good idea to attract guests for Christmas to mapperton you should do a Christmas lights display like the royal botanical gardens on your grounds there is nothing really like that in the UK to my knowledge beside the Royal botanical Gardens you could sell hot coco and there’s a bunch you could do with that that would be a hit if I would have to guess 😊
Driving that car would make me NERVOUS! What if something happened!😂
Great episode!
Triple AAA tows😊
You are about to drive...I’m nervous for you!! ☺️
Fantastic
I haven't watched it before ❤
Would you ever be able to do a yoga class in the Abbey for us that visit Mapperton in the future???
An American that does us proud in England.
Julie, that car ride looked fabulous - but you should have dressed up for the part, you shouldve worn the long dress, big hat and dust veil. Also the video started when i was out of the room and when i came in I thought that was Luke talking to you. That Lords voice is remarkably like your hubbys voice...but did I hear the name Montagu..distant rellie....another branch of the family? Never been to Beaulieu. Would like to one day. One lot of my ancestors were ship builders at the village, family name of Wyatt.
Julie - I was in Nassau last year and visited Fort Montagu. Is there any connection?
Yes indeed!!!
Julie are there castle we fans can adopt to help and restore. So when we are in Britain we have a place to stay?
Why is this being shown again?? I watched it a couple of years ago??
It is a monorail?!
First😎
Thanks 🙏 for the tour ❤❤❤SOUTH GEORGIA PEACH 🍑
Have you any US family or friends ? I've asked this before but no reply?
Of course! She is from America and her family still there. :)
What I'm saying she never mentions or shows them?
Is it really pronounced "bee-you-lee", because it is French.... 😅 Definitely isn't pronounced that way in French. It's kind of annoying... 😅
I do love that green car..
Free Palestine 🇵🇸 ! ❤️
