    My mechanic was in the hospital when mine broke off. I told him I was going to take it to Express so they can fix it since he was in the hospital. He told me I better not dare go pay all those $100's+ of dollars when all he can do is put some zip ties on it for free. Well the next day after getting out the hospital... He came in zip tied it all up. Now it works fine.

    Yesterday, I encountered a situation where a mechanic attempted to charge me an excessive amount for a repair that was not necessary. The issue was not with the shift cable, as the mechanic had claimed, but rather with the bushing. I was able to rectify the problem myself. Thanks to this video.

      Because zip ties are easily broken by hand already. These gearlever cables are driven by the gear lever, which, as the name says, is a lever. It multiplies the force you put in it times 5 or so. So that will snap zipties easy. A solution like the guy in the video did is the way to go.

    8 year old post but here goes. Couple days ago my gear stick was stuck due to some very cold conditions here in the UK at present. After idling for 5-10 mins it loosen but I was wondering if it may need greased or if there is any potential hack we could use to stop this from happening? When I say cold, its only between -2 and -5 which isn't all that cold tbh - but the problem is a bit of a pain.

    Awesome video. Thanks a lot.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Neil Williams Maybe, if it has come completely disconnected down below, and the shifter moves freely but the car stays in park. If it’s stuck in park and you can’t get it out of park, and it is an automatic, then it is probably a problem with the switch on the brake pedal. A lot of cars have a switch on the brake pedal that stops you from taking it out of park unless you have your foot on the brake.

    • @neilwilliams8608
      @neilwilliams8608 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the brake lights work, does that mean the brake switch is good? 2002 Nissan Maxima 3.5
      With the key to on position and my foot to the brake pedal, it does not work.
      This car was in a flood. The water was above the brake pedal.
      Could the flood have messed up the brake switch?
      Thanks for your reply and help.

      @hoohoohoblin  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Based on the number of views, this gets, it must be a pretty common problem. If you’re able to shift into other gears, it’s possible that something is broken inside the gearbox. But you should definitely look and make sure that the linkage is tight.

    So I guess out of curiosity would this work out for a 02 Camry? Gear shift gave out last night (no resistance at all when switching gears with the break engaged even), and now it's stuck in reverse.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's worth a try. Have someone move the shifter around, and look under the hood and under the car to see if you can find where it has become disconnected. It is probably a similar setup.

    How do you know if its the linkage or the transmission going out. My truck wont go in reverse? But sounds like to wants to.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Monica Labarre If you have someone move the linkage while you are under the truck, you should be able to see what's moving, and look for looseness in the linkage. If it can shift through all the other gears without problems, it may be a problem in the transmission.

    • @saucerguy3
      @saucerguy3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reverse gear in the transmission is separate from the rest, it's common to have them go out independently. It is on the easier side for repair from a shop to fix that specializes in them though and does not require tearing down and rebuilding the whole transmission.

    (Help) Where do I find this area in the car? Under the hood or under the steering wheel? Also will this fix the Shift locking out from 1st, 5th, 6th gear and reverse? I currently can't go in those gears when my vehicle is on, but when I turn the car off I can go in any gear, example, with the engine off I can place the gear in reverse, then turn the car on and reverse, but once I move out of reverse the gear is locked out again while engine is on. This means the transmission is good, but either the clutch needs a replacement or I have a linking adjustment needed done.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s down under the car behind the engine. If you have somebody move the shift lever around while you are under the car, you will hear and see where it is.

      @ProGamingProphecy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hoohoohoblin Thanks. I just had a mechanic look at it earlier today. Two different shop mechanics whom don't know each other have both confirmed the problem with my car is the clutch needs replacement and the pressure plate has given up. • @hoohoohoblin

      It’s a lot easier to jack up the car and look under it. If you don’t have a jack, maybe put one wheel up on the curb so you can squeeze under there, or maybe turn on your cell phone camera and hold it under there well somebody move the stick shift and see if you can see things moving.
