Wow. Thanks man. I bought the Dorman kit yesterday. The old bushing was the 1 piece transparent bushing. I fought and could not get the new one on. Your saying the 2 piece orange bushing work. I’m going to try this when get home. Thanks. BTW, for anyone reading this…DO NOT perform this on un-level ground. I accidentally bumped the trans lever, taking the truck out of P and it began to roll backwards. Luckily I can still move fast and got out of the way. Going to use my 2 post lift when I get home
    Thanks again man.

Brian, can't thank you enough! Whenever something comes up on my 2008 King Ranch, I immediately come to this site for answers. And you always have the perfect "fix it right" video. In this case, the bushing on the shift arm disintegrated-and the cable separated from the shift-arm. Did as you suggested and "Dorman kit" to the rescue (didn't even know this kit existed). After watching this video, I figured why not check the bushing on the transmission link as well. So I did-and found the internal busing was completely missing! Turned out the only thing holding the cable was that flimsy locking tab. In about 3 minutes, used the remaining Dorman pieces to repair what could have become a serious "no shift" transmission issue. You're a lifesaver, Brian, just wanted you to know how important your work is... not only for saving us DIYers money, but also saving lives!

Thank you for doing this video. It helped me figure out why I couldn’t shift out of park! The bushing had broken, fallen out and the shift linkage was completely off the stud! Found the Dorman kit at O’Reilly and installed. You’re the bomb bro!

I hate to admit it, but I bought Dorman Ford fuel line retainer clips when I replaced the fuel pump in my car to resolve a P0171/P0174 lean code on my Ford Five Hundred. Me too! Changed it a few years ago. I got in my 2006 F150 truck, and the shifter was loose. Moved it front and back, but it wouldn't shift into anything. I thought, Oh crap my transmission is done! Then I popped open the console and saw that the bushing had deteriorated. I held together the cable and connector with my hand so I could shift the truck and went to O'Reilly Auto. Got the part and a small c-clamp to push the bushing in. Done and done. A repair shop would have wanted to change out the entire cable and charge a lot. Saved money.

Dorman is the company that all of us in the auto repair business love to hate. They have so many great ideas, some of their designs can be better than OE, but the big letdown is in the QC department. At the end of the day, most of their parts are substandard Chinese-made parts. I've installed many of these bushing kits on customer rigs, and have never had the supplied center piece actually fit properly...I've always resorted to using the OE part just like Brian shows in this video. I will not put any Dorman parts on a customer vehicle unless it's something cheap and easily fixed like this shifter bushing. I've been burned way too many times in the last 20+ years to use anything more major than simple fasteners from Dorman.

While your on the trans linkage, I've ran into a couple trucks with a stiff shifter symptom and found the neutral safety switch had rust build up in it on the shift shaft causing it to bind hard. Sometimes your able to get it off and clean up the shaft and all good. Sometimes it's so tight you break the switch and have to replace it. I'm sure you've seen this before. 1. I think my truck is in reverse from when my bushing broke because it continued to go in reverse when I put it in drive
    2. Will I manually put my truck in neutral or park when I fit bushings and reattach the cable
    3. Will I have to do anything to the drive shaft as you did in the first part of this video
    Thanks for your help!

Hey, with my Ford Fusion 2017, my rotary dialed is stuck and the flashing light is on P. There is a message saying “shift service required”. Do you think that if I replace the selector cable completely will fix this problem?

Justin wondering what the symptom was that this was the solution.
Currently working on an 02 f350.
Replaced steering column because something broke and there was a disconnect in the column between the tumbler and the ignition switch. Had to remove the ignition switch to manually start, and shut it off..
Now with junkyard column you have to yank it higher into park to be able to start it and yank it to be able to get the key out when shutting it off.
    Are these bushings the problem?
Are the bushings on the column for the shift lever the problem?

I have a 2012 Ford f150 ecoboost 177k on it. I have a noise coming from behind left headlight, almost sound like a fan rubbing. Can't figure out what is making the noise. And it's intermittent. Any ideas?

WOW Brian, I can't believe you are endorsing a Dorman part! I avoid that company like the plague! I just wish Ford made the same part instead of forcing you to buy the entire cable.

I'm not endorsing Dorman, just saying they make fixing parts for the linkage since individual parts are not available separately.

Maybe a flex head ratchet wrench? The drivers side was pretty tight, too. Torch the fitting, work it back and forth, it should come out ok.

I was told I "stretched my linkage cable" when I had to forcefully yank the shifter out of park on a hill. My floor shifter now has to go past drive and back up to engage. I have a 2010 Explorer 4.0. I wanted to try this easy fix first but was told this won't fit my vehicle. Do you have any advice or another product recommendation?
