I’m a writer. What he said is worth listening to again. Writing helps you’re speaking because it’s the same language. Most speeches are written first, hence speechwriters. Ask yourself this: if you were going to make a video where you simply speak into the camera for ten minutes, wouldn’t you want to write it first? You may just brainstorm or make an outline or organize notes. Sometimes we just need notes for reference and know the material well enough. The more knowledge we have on a given topic, the easier and better is our writing and speaking about it. The reverse is true, as well. When we try to write or speak about something of which we have little knowledge, we don’t have the words.
An outline is a great tool. When used for brainstorming and then edited and refined, it can greatly improve writing as well as save time and effort. The number of drafts, both of the outline and the text, may be generous. Though it may seem tedious and time consuming, this generally isn’t the case. The more we edit, the less we find that calls for it.

    Question from audience:
[…] In an academic setting, we are a huge number of students from different countries and therefore different cultures. If you could give one advice to us how we could be able to actually put our opinion out there, to actually make people listen and not to cause some mindless conflict with just yelling. What advice would give us?
    Answer Jordan Peterson:
    Learn to write.
I’m dead serious about that. Because writing is formalised thinking. And so the way you write is.. First of all you need a problem, because why write if you don’t have a problem. So this is good advice if you are just writing an essay, by the way, for your classes. Pick a bloody problem that you want to write about because otherwise it’s false right from the start. It’s up to you to engage with the material until you find something that grips you, that you desire to investigate. Ok, so you need a problem.
The next thing you need to do is, well, you need to have something to say about the problem. So..reading, reading is really good for that. Read as much as you can, get your hands on […] that addresses the problem. Now you know a bunch of things, or at least provisionally know them. You at least have access to them.
Now you start sorting through it. It’s like, well ok, maybe I need to summarise what I’ve learned. And then I need to iron out the contradictions between what I’ve learned and I need to elegantly formulate that. And I need to get my word choice right, and my phrase choice right, and my sentence choice right, and I need to organise the sentences into proper paragraphs, and the paragraphs into proper sequence so that I have a coherent argument, and at the same time what you are doing is…you’re integrating your own personality at the highest and most abstract level of organisation. And you’re sharpening your tools, and you’re putting yourself straight because you’re learning to think. You learn to do that by writing.
And so I would say: pick some hard problems and learn to write very, very carefully. And when I say pay attention to the word, I mean that: pick the right words. Organise them into the right phrases, get your sentences straight. Like, when I wrote my first book “Maps of Meaning” I believe I wrote every sentence in that book fifty times. Fifty variants of every sentence. I’d write it once, I’d write it again, I’d write it again, and I’d have a little competition: which sentence is better? I’d pick that sentence, and do the same with the paragraphs.
Over many, many years, you hone your words. They’re the most powerful thing about you, bar none. If you are an effective writer and speaker and communicator, you have all the authority and competence that there is. And so, you’re at university. Maybe you’re taking humanities degree. Well what’s humanities degree for? It’s to teach you how to think. You learn to think by writing. Now there’s more: to read, to speak and all of that, but the best thing you can do is:
READ and WRITE every day. Couple of hours every day. Write about things you find important. And see if you can discover what you believe to be true. And that will build you a foundation. And it’s unbelievably practical. If you look at people who are phenomenally successful across life, there’s various reasons, but one of them is that they’re unbelievable good at articulating what they’re aiming at. And strategizing, and negotiating, and enticing people with a vision forward.
It’s like, get your words together man, that’s…that makes you unstoppable. And that’s really…that’s the core of the humanities, that idea. Get your words together. Make yourself an articulate creature. And then you’re deadly in the best possible way. And take that seriously.
And I’ll end with something too. You students…you might think in your more cynical moments that you have to offer your professors what they want and gerrymander the content of your language to suit their predilections, or what you consider to be their predilections. First of all, it’s a very small minority of professors who are corrupt enough to punish you for producing a high-quality essay that they don’t agree with, and that’s reprehensible, but it doesn’t happen very often. But more importantly, it’s the highest academic sin to do that. Because what you’re here to do is learn to find your true voice. And every time you deviate from that for expedient reasons you corrupt yourself, and not in a trivial way! Because, when you formulate your arguments, that becomes a permanent part of your character, you carry that with you, it becomes part of the structure through which you view the world, and it guides your actions. And so, you hold your words pristine. And you work in a dedicated way to become as articulate and clear as you can possibly become. And there’s nothing that’s more practical and noble than that at the same time. That’s why the humanities are so valuable. Y’know, you think “what good is a humanities degree?”. Well, you come out from here and you are able to speak and think and write, no matter where you go you’re headed for the pinnacle, and hopefully in a way that’s positive for everyone. So that’s what I would recommend.

Writing has been an invaluable tool for me in terms of figuring out my own 'truth'. In many realms of life you will hear different arguments for what the most optimal way to live one's life is. For example, I've heard good arguments for being a vegan, as well as eating meat. I've heard good arguments for monogamous relationships, and I've also heard good arguments for 'spinning plates'. I've heard good arguments for things such as practicing semen retention (as crazy as that might sound to some people), as well as good arguments for it being complete bullshit. Good arguments can also be made for different political parties and their differing philosophies. I always try to expose myself to the both sides of the argument, and just the best minds in general. But at the end of the day, it is up to me to find what works for me. That comes through contemplation, experimentation and perhaps most importantly writing out my ideas.
Personally, I don't ever try to force my writing. But every now and then, usually when I am feeling my most confused, and when I am feeling overburdened by a problem(s), then I will end up sitting down and just letting it all flow out.
I also find that my best writing is done after a nice long walk or after a gym session. Meditation or reading a book by a legitimate 'spiritual teacher' such as Eckhart Tolle or Osho (not for everyone, I suppose) that pretty much instantly get me in the zone are of tremendous help too, as well as fasting and good black coffee, and a quiet/peaceful environment (and a good night's sleep beforehand). Because having a clear, yet sharp mind will obviously make it easier to find the best words to articulate yourself, and thus to find the best solutions.

@@kurodesuuuu Bit of a late reply... It depends on your definition of the two. I suppose journaling is more of a habit that you do pretty much everyday, which I don't do. And it often turns in to writing like 10 pages, which isn't typical of 'journaling'. But I'm not writing for an audience if that what you mean. It's not intended for anyone else to read, except sometimes my closest friend that enjoys reading it and I don't mind sharing it with him.

@@stephenhughes5156 geez, that was a year back? Time flies, damn
I've continued journaling and I've found it invaluable to find a better version of the "truth" for various things, atleast compared to last year. My writing process has become much more organized.
One thing I enjoy doing is writing down why I SHOULDN'T do or follow a principal I've adopted. It's kind of like arguing with your self- and it helps you find a better truth

Anna Vajda Yes, it’s sad. I’m wondering when an official dictionary for internet slang and abbreviations might emerge. (Every time I say this, it already exists) The English language allows for much liberty, and I believe that we have an ample supply of synonyms. Today, using a thesaurus for writing has never been easier. While literary evolution is natural, it would seem we have enough words. I find looking up the latest abbreviations somewhat tedious. It’s difficult to lodge complaint when communication is the bottom line. They can be effective and save time, however when will there be enough? Language works best when everyone is rather on the same page. Perhaps I’m getting old, though it’s not quite the same as my mother’s generation complaining over Elvis Presley’s gyrating hips. I’ve been trying to lay off using bigger words, like you mentioned. It may be more important than ever for as large an audience as possible to understand what is meant.
IDK👈🏻😳 Perhaps I’m guilty of more conformity than I let on.
