  • Dr. Jordan Peterson explains the best way to teach critical thinking is to teach proper writing. This is an excerpt from his 2017 Maps of Meaning class: • 2017 Maps of Meaning 0...

I don't find 'Beyonce' special, either... but that doesn't mean I'll go to her youtube videos asking (with a derogatory tone) what is so special about 'this' Beyonce. If they like Beyonce, I SIMPLY LET THEM BE. Your comment is not the question of a person who is curious, or who simply wants to understand... your question is rather of a person who has a chip on his shoulder, and who is fishing for an ARGUMENT. We are not giving it to you. We probably see thru your intentions (masquerading as curiosity) and decided to ignore you. Simple!

I've never heard the skill of writing emphasized as something other than a communication tool by educators. To see it as a tool to hone your critical thinking skills and to organize your thoughts is something I didn't consider in a serious way before hearing this. As someone who wants to become better at expressing ideas through verbal communication, this video has given me the perspective of seeing writing as a tool to improve my speaking by teaching me to be more articulate.

Through my few years of writing, it became abundantly clear how important it is to sharpen that sword. Writing may not be conscious for everyone, but just to have that as a skill will aid in you in your future in anything really like he stated here. It really does make you deadly. And you can tell who writes and who doesn't 🤣

Some of us are so acclimatized to precise and logically coherent communication, that we minify its importance. There are many people who cannot construct a coherent sentence and employ word salad to maintain a pretence of profundity. There are many who cannot so much as correctly interpret what we mean to say, notwithstanding that we could not have been any clearer. I daresay a few post-modernist writers could be categorized as such.

The best thing I have ever done for myself was teach myself how to write. I was functionally illiterate throughout elementary and middle school. I could read, but I lacked a lot of reading comprehen. It's very difficult to enjoy reading a book or even a paragraph if you can't comprehend the main idea. But I loved stories and I wanted to write them. My parents said, "You can't write stories because you have to read a lot in order to write." FYI, that is absolute bull pizzle. I don't know where that idea came from, but it's demoralizing garbage. I finally got an 8th grade teacher who actually believed in my ability to write, despite my inability to read.
By the end of 9th grade I read Shakespeare. By the end of 10th grade, I had written my first set of novellas. It wasn't good, but I wrote it. By the end of 11th grade, I had won a competition for writing. By the end of 12th grade I was leading editior for the school newspaper. Essays, which are the dread of every high school student, were a breeze to write. In my twenties, I had learned a second language. I got nearly 97% on college admission tests for writing. My communication skills were so good, my department would often send me out to meet with executives about the job requirement. I've writen handbooks and job aids because I can break an idea down to its raw studs.

      1) Write often.
      2) Don't blindly use a spell check. When a spell checker marks a word, pull it up and pay close attention to its correct spelling. Write it out a couple of times!
      3) Don't blindly use grammar check. Say the sentence out loud when you see it's marked.
      4) Study literature. That's not the same as studying reading. Literature is more along the lines of actual mechanics of words. It helps you fall in love with them.

    Power of writing.
The best way to teach people critical thinking is to teach them to write. The best thing you can do is to teach people to write. One of the things that just blows me away about universities is that no one ever tells students why they should write. You should write not for grades but for learning how to think because thinking makes you act effectively in the world, thinking makes you win the battle you undertake and those battles could be for good things. If you can think and speak and write nothing can get in your way so that’s why you learn to write. It’s like the most powerful weapon you can possibly provide someone with and I mean I know lots of people who have been staggeringly successful and watched them throughout my life I mean those people you don’t have argument with them they’ll just slash you into pieces and they are not in a malevolent way it’s like if you are going to make your point and they are going to make their point you better have your points organized because otherwise you’re going to look like and be an absolute idiot. If you can formulate your arguments coherently and make a presentation if you can speak to people, if you can layout a proposal people give you money, give you opportunities, you have influence and that’s what you are at university for. Teach people to be articulate because that’s the most dangerous thing you can possibly be and that’s motivating, if people know that it’s like, well why are you learning to write, because here’s your sword, here’s your M16 right here’s is your bullet proof vest like you learn how to use them but ah it’s just it’s an endless mystery to me why that isn’t made self-evident so that’s the sort of thing that can drive you mad trying to sort out it’s like people are there there’s a conspiracy to bring people into education system to make them weaker so a gift that keeps the competition down maybe that’s one way of thinking about it if your students are stupid they’re not going to challenge you so.

I don’t just give the professor an easy essay, I have them enjoy reading them.. so every time there’s an essay I see that they are eager to read what are my points and views and thoughts of a matter that I’m writing about. Just amazing A+ on all my essays. English is not my first language never attend high school in the United States… and was very afraid before starting English courses, but after I watched this video I understood the assignment. Excellent. I have been teaching writing for years.... always good to get better material.
I should add... before my MA linguistics, I majored in Japanese and the first book I bought to help me get through that programme was on English grammar.

I see this constantly in online debates as someone who is a good reader but an okay writer at this point. Those who can put their thoughts, reasonings and experience into a coherent written presentation win. Well, sort of win most of the time being in some situations it's very clear that despite having presented themselves perfectly, their opponents incapable of having taken anything from the experience as whole largely nullifying the whole endeavor.
Far too often I see those who are great writers and thinkers going up against others who are so utterly lacking READING comprehension and general capacity to think or understand the complexities of the subject at hand at all they don't have a clue as to how badly they have lost and why and how. (They feel extremely strong about the subject but clearly have no real working knowledge.)
That in a way takes the winning out of the win for their opponent being no matter how well they have presented themself the other side has shown itself to be so inept at the game and so bewilderingly unknowledgable of the topic the whole experience was just waste of time.
To which it ends with the big dummy happily skipping away proclaiming he won because his opponent gave up and left in frustration of his outright stupidity even though it's painfully clear he got his head slapped off his body plus shot himself in the ass countless times while never having scored a valid counter point against his opponent.

Tcmtech that's what it's like living in a small town or the south. I constantly have to dumb myself down around my friends/coworkers but luckily my family is able to have intellectual discussions. I get really fascinated with the abstract and abstracting everything around us to form complex worlds and ideas and my mom's one of the only people I talk to that can keep up with that

    • @linkwarior5
      @linkwarior5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

dman , it's the opposite for me. My family cannot understand the abstract in the slightest. They can barely follow instructions for an Ikea lofted bed, even with guided pictures. I still love them because they have done their best with what they have. It's just that the average level of conversations (especially with my mom) consist of cat videos on her Facebook feed. I have my most stimulating conversations with my friends, which allows me to think more about real issues.

If you have such amazing teachers, Oh gosh I never would leave class for LIFE!!!!! This is what should be taught and promoted in every educational institution. The weaker students must be helped to come on the same level so that they can compete instead of playing dumb and destroying their potentials.

Makes sense, if you think about. Almost all human achievement is based on individual people working together. In order to do that, you need to communicate, and the individuals who are best able to communicate to others in a way that motivates them to contribute achieve the most.
I was watching a documentary about the animation director Hayao Miyazaki, and he was talking about how the secret to his success has been his ability to get others to expend their energy working on his projects.

Agreed! This is also very similar to what Napoleon Hill said about Andrew Carnegie: "One of the greatest challenges is getting people to work together in a spirit of harmony"... If you can achieve that, you've got the money...

I have a professor who spent nearly 3 hours over 2 classes antagonizing us about writing and asking us “why do you want to write? Why do you show up to class? Why do you want a degree?” over and over and NEVER gave an answer.
Jordan Peterson answered it in 2 sentences.
    So frustrating

Partially agreed! Writing won't miraculously create in you a critical spirit, however it can definitely help you improve yours. Writing is important to formalise your speech and argumentation so it can be not just more clear, but also stronger. This way you'll combine a strong brick with cement, creating the foundations of a good argumentative discourse.

What does learning to write actually look like when you're not in college writing an essay? Do you sit down and write anything that comes to mind? Do a written exercise developing an idea? How do you learn to write? Another question: how do you become articulate and fluent? Via reading and writing a lot?

I remember attending a degree course quite a while back, just when all of this post-modern shite was coming in-Sausserre et al, however they also provided a brilliant practical writing course, to brush up the undergrads skills-I think that was the most valuable course I attended.

This four minute video was so incredibly powerful to me. It inspired me to fight back my abuser-and win in court. I believe the American public education system has been purposely dumbing down society so there’s less resistance and no intelligent arguments pushing back. I was a local high school substitute teacher a few years ago. 90% of the students could not write a proper sentence. I would receive a full written page without ANY punctuation or capitalization. What was written was basically incoherent. It broke my heart. 😢

It's good for memory too that's why I always used to make lists. If you write a grocery list even if you forget to take it to the store with you the likelihood you will still remember the items is much higher. In sales too if I had an important customer I would write their name down to be more likely to remember when next I saw them. Things like that. It's a hand eye coordination thing that trains your mind too.

"The best way to teach people to think is to teach them to write. Thinking makes you win the battles you undertake, and those could be battles for good things. If you can think, and speak, and write, you are absolutely deadly. It's the most powerful weapon you could possibly provide someone with."
