    RE003’s do pretty well for what’s an old, old tyre now. The buy three, get one free deal for them is always a winner too. The RE004 is out overseas, no idea why Bridgestone/Firestone haven’t bought it out here yet.
    I’m using Goodyear asymmetric at the moment and I really like them. Nicely balanced tyre.

      Yeah the GYA5 seems to be the best replacement for RE003s currently

    • @TassieLorenzo
      @TassieLorenzo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem with Goodyear Asymmetric is that there is a big step in sidewall stiffness between 17" and 18". I had the 18" versions before and they were good, predictable with good feedback, but apparently the 17" versions of the Asymmetric are much softer and rather vague. It's a shame we can't get Eagle F1 Super Sport in the smaller sizes. I'm very happy with the Potenza S007A at the moment though (hopefully the replacement Potenza Sport is just as good, even though it is a little lighter construction), the S007A has the same excellent taut sidewalls and road feedback as the RE003 (or any Potenza, Bridgestone are good about not compromising on the essentials of a sports tyre), but with *much, much* more grip.
      None of the horrible vagueness from the 17" Pilot Sport 4 ST, those were awful IMO, a total "jelly tyre" as Jonathon Benson from TyreReviews calls soft sidewalls tyres (maybe the 18" version is not as bad, thankfully, but even so in Benson's tests he confirms even the European version of the Pilot Sport 4, which is different than our "ST" version from SE Asia, does not feel sporty compared to the competition despite the name). It's the combination of the PS4's very wide tread and very soft sidewalls, which means the tread is very poorly controlled on the rim under lateral loads and exhibits unsettling lateral oscillations (the Pilot Sport 4 is mighty under braking or traction thanks to that, though, for people who care more about that), notwithstanding the lack of road feedback means you can't tell what the tyres are doing, unlike the excellent feedback which normal, rigid sports tyres provide!
      RE004 could be the go-to when it arrives as it's still engineered by Bridgestone Japan (like the S007A and RE003), unlike the Potenza Sport which is now engineered by Bridgestone in Italy. It should have a more competitive price than the Potenza Sport (mind you, the Potenza Sport already has a pretty reasonable price compared to the Eagle F1 Super Sport or Pilot Sport 4S, *and* the Potenza is the only one that is available in smaller sizes).

    I'm in Australia and have gone through 3 sets of Pilot Sport 4 tyres on my Golf. I like them but I've just changed to RE003's because even with regular balancing, rotations and alignment I wore through them very quickly.
    I find the RE003's a bit harder, louder, but a bit more direct in steering feel, interested to see if they last longer.
    On another note the Pilot Sport 5 just got released which seems to perform identically to the 4 in grip but Michelin are claiming better durability.

    • @KiwiCarLife
      @KiwiCarLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah tbh any performance summer tyre is gonna wear pretty quickly coz it's a soft compound for better grip. I'll probably get 30,000km out of my re003's before needing a chance. They're starting to get low

    I like RE003s. Have had them on 4 different cars but they are seriously outclassed now.
    Hankook RS4 (Z232) is the performance buy at the moment in NZ. Its cheaper than RE003s - wears well and has a looot more grip. It does take a lot of work to get heat into them now that we are not in summer but even cold they offer similar performance to Re003s
    A lot sharper than mushy all rounders like PS4 too.

      @@KiwiCarLife but you like a bit of luxury and balance. The Pilot Sport is, basically the accord of tyres. Does everything well. Doesn't sacrifice comfort like most sport tyres do.
      It's debatable how usable RS4s are on public roads. My Miata mates can but they are all pretty intense with his hard they push.

      How are the Hancooks in the wet? Had RE003s and now have PS3s on my car, the RE003 was much more pointed on turn in while the PS3 rolls onto the sidewall a lot more, but the wet grip is so many lightyears ahead on the PS3 that it makes me struggle to want to go back to RE003s instead of PS4s for my next set.

    I am a fan of PS4, have them on my car, you missed one very important comparison and that is braking distance, PS4 really pull up well wet or dry and that is what gives me the ultimate confidence in these tyres. In the past I have had Potenza's on my other cars and I like them also, what is the actual price difference these days anyway? for me I feel the small amount extra to pay is well worth it.

  • @keno88

    Big fan of the PS4s, have them on my Euro atm. Could not fault them. Did have RE003s on my WRX but switch them to the PS4s and felt substantially quieter and also lasted longer. About a $100 difference between both for all 4 so not too much difference. Both solids options but I’ve found tyres are something you don’t want to skimp on.
