- That last hop was a bit rough. Nothing serious broke but it certainly added to the work list.

"Trickin Pickin" performed by Doug Waterman
Trying to guess everything that could go wrong and pre fix it would prevent anyone from ever leaving the dock. Real world sea trials will *always* cause something to break, fall or fail, so your time is better spent equipping a well stocked workshop/workstation with tools and spare parts. Even a small boat should have a basic tool kit, along with spare bulbs, fuses and other items that are expected to break.
It's also a good idea to keep duct tape, marine adhesive and some wire and zip ties aboard. Columbus never would have found the "New World" without it!
Awesome! And Columbus did it without a 3D printer.
My comment vanished.
@@mySeaPrince_ Bermuda Triangle?
Wondering when you will start squinting and smoking a corn cob pipe, Popeye style.
He needs to pick a sea captain's cover for his head as well: tricorn, bicorne, greek fisherman's hat, other options but must be traditional and nautical (dixie cup hat from the US Navy is not allowed or any other enlisted navy's cover)
@@KnightsWithoutATable hmmm, those kinds of hats (dixie cup?) were sold by the thousands to kids in the 60's. I had one. I guess they got outlawed like so many other things in this country.
hey boss. Professional framer here. you can just glue those safety switch in place with some CA or hot glue. makes a world of difference. Thats what we do on our saws.
Having the ability to independently maintain and improve your vessel as you go is a massive plus.
I think so too, and it gives me a lot of enjoyment.
Great video. I stop by the other week on a Friday. Captain Steve Freedom Boat club. Glad to see you survived the storm.
i am sorry but you are a research vessel you are a teaching vessel and that is great as you have a lot to pass on to young folks keep up the great work
...we just completed a study in storm anchoring in strong currents. More work needs to be done. : )
Ive been a boat owner, and volunteered to repair wooden tall ships many times. Doug, you know whats up. You sound and act like nearly 100% of the lifers chilling in the yards, fixing or building boats every day.
If you want to know how to seal up that deadlight, be dirty, find a commercial yard and talk to the nastiest, dirtiest dude with a welder after handing him a 6-er. I dont know what he'll tell you, but it'll be 80% right. :-)
Well, heck, thought you might add another mildly erotic shape into the bracket gusset. I was showing all the nifty art work incorporated into your boat to my artist girl friend. She was amazed. That boat was predicted to capsize upon its first entry into the water. You are waaaaaay past that prediction.
Made and fitted another plank today using English Oak..
Thanks again for your help! Windless is working flawlessly again. And more importantly, I’m not doing it by hand.
Happy to know you made it through the storm without any real issues! Cheers!
My pleasure. Looking forward to crossing paths with you again. Fair Winds
@@SVSeeker Great that you could help a fellow sailor. Your boat is a great mobile workshop!
do you do any streaming or shows on youtube?

Im on a mooring ball st augustine municipal marina, Grand Banks 36 i saw yur big orange dinghy last week at dinghy dock. Ive watched you build your boat from beginning
Come on over for a visit if you like. Saturday 10 to 2 is sort of open house days for us. You can text me at 918 630 4050 to before heading this way. We are just north of the Vilano Beach Bridge
I hope my comments, help out ?? So little I know , but I know this, this world has a way of learning you all you have to do is come up with a Idea, ?.and yours was/ is Beautiful, Happy sails 😅 my friends
Thanks for that
I remember driving past a very old building in St Augustine years ago when I rode my motorcycle to Daytona Beach for Bike Week.
It had been raining hard since late breakfast in Ridgeland in SC and being over 13 hours into my journey
I still needed to find a campground and setup my tent elsewise I would have stopped to check it out.
Glad you were able to preposition your flagship/ NOB in a good spot. Bravo Zulu.
hopefully you will include some footage from the Waffle House when you go!
How did you guys fair the storm?
We done good. Thanks. Glad to be on this side of Florida.
@@SVSeeker Whew! Good timing getting to the other side. Sail on Captain.
I'm having kittens here! Never. EVER. Let anyone stand under cranes! EVER.
Still enjoying your journey.
How many in your litter this time? : )
Hi Doug, enjoy watching your videos here in Auckland, New Zealand. Can you post the file for your 3D printed latch? Thanks
The are very specific to my needs but if you send me an email I will be happy to send you the STL files. svseeker@ymail.com
I’m digging the OSHA approved safety shoes you’re wearing while operating machinery 😜
I have mentioned this before. So I thought I’d mention it again. …. Have you thought about 3D Printing a small replica of the helm. Wheel …. With the octopus…. And making a clock out of it …. For those who are. Seeking the time to make something…. You could sell them on line for some of your followers that. WOULD. LOVE to have something that was made on board your ship by you !! …. Time will tell when you have the time to make time …. :o). Build one and auction it off. .. when you have the time to…lol
You're in luck. Adam, the poor sea sick guy a couple of videos back just finished a 3D model of Seeker. So of like Benchy.
Ego is the reason Doug is living his dream on his 75' self made boat
74', because 73 is the perfect number and 74 is one more than perfect
After 2 years of trying to get a multi million dollar project on a ship together and commissioned, the owner demanded that each company involved send an expert to resolve the remaining issues.
So a bunch of us sailed out of Durban with instructions not to come back until the sea trials were successful. Three of us slept in the infirmary because of the amount of people on board.
We were out for 5 days 😂
The moral of the story for internet keyboard experts is that even with millions, projects and sea trials can take a long time. Especially with unique systems such as the one I worked on and SV Seeker.
(Maintenance is also endless)
Refinements and repairs never stop on a boat 😉
I'm still trying to finish things. : )
So funny, I'm 62 and remember everyone bitchin about everything made of plastic. Now everyone is making so much from plastic. I guess the convenience of being able to make any shape outweighs the material density.
There is a limit. If I need it strong, I’ll still go metal.
@@SVSeeker Can't beat CAD straight to the hand even if it's just for a prototype though. Practical printing is the only printing worth doing for me.
Once Kamala stops oil production. There won’t be much plastic.
@@gushhnet I agree. It's not worth buying a 3D printer if you're not going to take the time to learn a little CAD.
I'm a little reluctant to get on the plastic band wagon still even though I know a little CAD lol just not a fan o plastic. First thing I do when I buy a tool is throw away the plastic box, saves space and I don't have to look at cheapo material. I do understand the upsides, my gut tells me otherwise though like some kinda defiant little devils advocate
I still am amazed at you Doug,I followed you from when you lifted those huge sheets of steel and welded them together to start your “ship”.
Your at the top of my list.
Blessings
Thanks. It's been a good ride.
It's Amy, one of my heroes!
One of mine too. She's cut from different cloth.
I normally print PETG, it's reasonably strong but it gets a little stringy if the settings are not perfect.
I've been printing for a couple of years, on and off. Started with PLA and now mostly use PET or PETG (think they are the same thing). The PETG is a lot better for more demanding parts, but I can make it fail too. I think a lot of making parts stronger is in the orientation and print settings. Have just got some ABS and a future project will be to print some gears in nylon or maybe something even more exotic. I don't have Doug's CAD skills, but happy to tinker and get better.
3d printed TPU seals?
Storm wasn't bad here in Ft. Pierce but our friend in Jensen Beach ended up on the bridge. Total loss😢
Dam. Sorry to here that.
I like Amy I wanna see more Amy hopefully yall cross more paths lol
@AmysSoloSailingAdventures
When I was a kid in the 60’s there was a song called “ EVERY THINGS GONNA BE PLASTIC BY AND BY”
th-cam.com/video/eMtLdE5Zq-8/w-d-xo.html
And don't forget John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band! All we are sayyyy-in, is give peace a chance
@@SVSeeker are you trying to seduce me misses robinson?
reminds me of that voyage I took a long time ago with Odysseus between Aeaea and the rocks of Scylla on a homeric galley.
the ship was lost before we made it back to Ithaca but we were able to build a new one on the island of Calypso
Hope everything is ok with the hurricane passing over.
We're good. Glad we were not on the other side of Florida.
@@SVSeeker Sir you just made my day. I figured things were pretty stable as you posted a video. I was hoping you didn't incur any damage. It was a pretty wide hurricane.
That was the third hurricane in 2 years to come ashore in Taylor county.
We need to get you some safety sandals. Because saftey third.
It always feels great when you get to finish odd jobs 👍
Yes it does!
We're you impacted by the storm?
Yes, the wind toughed 67 MPH here. We did good and got a great test. I really am glad we were just on the outskirts.
@@SVSeeker God bless, she ain't so sketchy as some make her out to be after all ;).
@@thijsrikkerink6333 Naa. Seeker is great. Now the Captain is Sketchy as Fuck. : )
Says the guy that built a ship with its own machine shop. Let's hope he has some spare rubber inserts for that drive line coupler. 😊
Clever latch design.
Thanks Working on Version 3 now. : )
If you had a hand rail, and a high vis vest on that welder wouldn’t have fallen.
LOL : )
Gotta get a PT belt. Nothing bad can happen then. :-)
If auto manufacturers would fix what's wrong and make them not break again. I would buy that truck. Unfortunately they come out with new engines new bodies new transmissions all with new problems.
Ya just got to buy an old truck. : )
If you like abs try asa it's just better abs
I tried ASA with the recommended settings from QIDI and it came out really bad, but the ABS worked great on the first try.
@@SVSeeker Yeah companies have had lots more time to perfect the settings for abs, I use bambu labs filament and settings never had any issues with it a little pricy though.
Circ saw sculpture--patent that process
They already outlawed it in the USA. : )
I tried to send you pics of a lite I want to give you but I cannot send pics. How cans I send you a picture, and where do I send it.
Send it to: svseeker@ymail.com Thanks
I’m always happy to hear you never talking politics. It’s such a relief from all the other channels. I’ve got two of your bilge rats on the shelf in my shop, a grinde not welder T-shirt, and an almost full set of the motivational coins.
I enjoy that you hate all the negative and you’re wonderful at inspiring a positive outlook.
I really don’t care what line on the ballot you fill out. Your channel has always been about going out and learning something. When you don’t know anything about a project you are working or skill you are learning you do a wonderful job in teaching us how you got to where you are.
I am super surprised to see you let that political slander slide into one of your videos.
Actually I like talking about politics, sex, religion, I just have a difficult time finding others that want to talk and not just spew out what they swallowed. I find it fascinating that when we talk there are always good reasons why well believe the way we do and we can share understanding. And when we know someone and why they believe the way the do we accept them. So I really have no clue what you saw in this or any other video that constitutes political slander.
@@SVSeeker ok
Love that door latch device. Looks well storm proof. Thanks Doug....
Thanks 👍
Great to see you helping the world to go round, Doug and team.
Have you got fuses for the dead lights? 😉You could send one of the crew for some. 👍
Hope to see you in the California gulf someday
I hope you’re doing ok after Helene
No real problems. Glad we were not on the other side of the state.

Nice latch
Gulfport, St. Pete and most of the West coast got rocked by the surge hope you fared well over there on the East coast
It was nothing here, when compared to that.
Dude if you’re going to show your feet on camera, you need to get a pedicure. 8:25
One day, you will get it fixed, im sure!
I will. It just looks strange because perseverance is such a rare commodity.
Why not plumber putty or panel bond
I prefer the minty freshness of Wriggles : )
I love 3D printing. I have printed huge number of practical things that I designed in AutoCad hobbyist license. Just a thought. a detent on your drawer catch that allows you to leave it open when you are at anchor cooking or the like.
Ha! I'm working on that very idea this morning. Going to try a latch for the latch first as I don't want to be easy to accidentally disable it. I am really tired of fixing those drawers when they end up in the floor. : )
@@SVSeeker I have a toolbox that the lock in part of the handle. Have to slide it sideways to open the drawer. Wonder if something like that could be integrated into the handle of the drewers you have.
Nice job Doug on that latch!!
Thanks
Very.
you shouold have used PETG instead. Its stronger than that stuff
Naa. Sticking with what is working for now. The pile of spools is growing too large. : )
@@SVSeeker I turn around on my chair and watch my large pile of spools and I have to agree. But once you start working with petg things go a whole lot easier. Wait till you start messing around with nylon. You got to account for shrinkage.
Let's go Brandon ...😅😅😅😅😅😅
He'd like that.

Haven't gone wrong YET. Ego will be your Achilles heel doug.
I dont understand. How far does the guy have to go to get you ppl to relax?
Built his own boat. Lives on it, and loves working on it. He made it. He gets to have confidence in himself.
You mistake ego for one's belief in their own ability to do. It's common among the sheep with TDS.
