  • You can reduce stress or you can harden up and deal with it. Our poor propeller drive train has been under a lot of stress. We help it deal with it.

    I fought an over tightened locknut on my bmx axle this weekend. With no vise, the solution was to use the holes in the cone spanner and some self tapping screws to secure it to the bottom of my desk and a breaker bar to loosen the locknut. Thanks for the inspiration Doug 👍

    Used to come down to my boat slip, and see the captain that owned the place's feet sticking out of a deck hatch. He'd say 'I'm resting". I'd yank his 80 year old self out of there, then take his place, until the next captain happened by. We always got 'er done, somehow.

    Hell yeah! What a journey for the transfer case, reminds me of the the casting journey of the bronze "capstan"?? Thing for the anchor winch.
    The only thing that comes to mind now based off the previous stress tests you posted is to maybe upgrading the design for the aux heat sink you added to keep the temp down but maybe no need. Plus there is probably a list of non transfer case projects yall are looking forward to.
    The amount of different projects and skillsets it takes to design, build, test break and fix, maintain and upgrade a boat like this is somewhat staggering when I think of it. One thing at a time, little bit everyday. Ive seen other boat builds since finding your channel years ago, but the working boat concept yall have going on is right up my alley. Happy to see you succeed! Cant wait for more thanks for sharing Doug.

    The 5.9 has a hole on the left side for a batting tool. So remove the starter to access the torque converter bolts and use a batting tool to turn the engine. Much easier than the front pulley.
    The barring tool is cheap and it’s necessary for valve adjustment and replacement the injection pump.

    • @SVSeeker
      @SVSeeker  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Actually you can only see the bolts if you remove the starter. With this bell housing they have to be removed from the other side. And that hole is apparently on the starboard side too from the videos I have seen and we have an exhaust pipe there. But I do think my oil filter removal strap will work better. I'll try that next time.

    Hopefully you don't have any further problems with the 205, but it does make me wonder if a later style chain driven T-case like a NV241/243 or NV271/273 would have the same issues. In your shoes if I broke the 205 again I'd probably order an aftermarket Atlas tcase or similar. Those units can be made really stout to handle some fairly extreme power and shock loading. Also ratios are customizable, and still cheaper than commercial marine alternatives like you've mentioned.

Every few weeks, we con someone who is more agile to descend into it and retrieve the evidence of our oopsies.....

      I know the 4x4 folks have run a lot more HP through things like the NP205 than I will ever do. I still believe we just need to persist, but if we do snap something in the NP205 now, we'll look at a bigger box. I doubt it will be anything "marine" but more truck or tractor as you say. : )

      @Cheers_Warren หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SVSeeker They have not run boats then! When you look at power boats they are often running at 80% throttle for hours at a time ( like off-road equipment , think bulldozes and tractors where throttle is pegged for hours). Then you need to add that the same engine gas or diesel can get 20-50% more horsepower because water/heat exchanger is much more efficient that air cooled radiators . Compare the specs for the hp/torque for same Detroit diesel in a greyhound bus and in a marine application . So much higher continuous power rating.
      I may be wrong on the actual #of duty cycle of automotive off-road but how many of then hold the throttle at WOT or close to for several hours at a time? It’s just not physically possible . Roads aren’t that long!!!!
      We will see , what do they consider their continuous max duty rating?

    Marine engineers should be short, skinny people. Or.. engine rooms should be roomier ! Either way, you need oil. Question: Do they make magnetic sockets? Someone should.

    Ooh nasty, boats are never easy to work on. Atleast you can stand up in your engine room. Pleasure boats your crouched down crawling on your knees. Glad I dont work on boats tried it a few times no thanks lol. That new drive plate should make a difference.

    you looked like you were cutting it pretty close going under that bridge there
    I imagine somewhere along the way you measured the height of Seeker but doesn't she change when loaded with gear, fuel and water?
    is there a device that can give you an accurate reading on your height near the bridge or is it more of an art than a science?
    Glad you got her going.
    don't forget to stop at the Waffle House and get a couple souvenir coffee mugs for the mess kit

      That was actually 12 feet. We have seen less than a foot. : ) And the height is on the charts recoded at high tide and the is also a gauge on the side that shows the exact height from the water. However I have seen one of those that was six feet off. The span was actually higher. And finally we measured the mast height over the water. It is called the “air draft” and ours is under 54 feet. Very low for a boat our size thanks to the Chinese Junk rig.

    I think you now qualify as a U.S Navy engineer. As soon as the engine room is stuffed with a bunch of equipment blocking access to any other component, you qualify.

    Doug, I'm going to build a walking robot. Like one from the movie Avatar. If some guy built a boat of this size in his backyard, I can do it too. I'm writing this here, because it will be fun to read this comment in the future again.
