My tip, before you start appying/interviewing for jobs. Bet a bid for movers to relocate you to Alaska, it's shocking the cost to move your household good and your automobiles to Alaska. Enough to keep one from moving. Our bid $45,000, 3 bedroom, 2 automobiles. We don't know what to do know.

On the options for moving up, flying up and shipping all of your stuff through Alaska Air Cargo is probably one of the most affordable and easiest options. All you have to do is become a Known Shipper and it’s pretty quick.

When I moved up and back this summer I felt like I both brought too much stuff and at the same time not enough stuff. I had my 16' cargo trailer pretty much packed full and I'd say half of it I didn't really need. When I do it again I'll leave behind most of the furniture I brought up last time and instead bring up things that are harder to get in AK, like a decent used snow blower. I hear small engines from Harbor Freight are popular in Alaska so maybe I'll bring a few of those to flip to help pay for the trip.

My son will be thinking about college by the time we get up there. How does residency work? How long does someone have to live here to be considered a resident of the state for in-state tuition?

Google "University of Alaska resident requirement" and look specifically for the University of Alaska System entry. It has some interesting information. Good Luck!

I’m making one right now for the more off grid or in central alaska. The list of shit needed is huge if you actually want electric contingency plans and proper communications systems and orienteering gear and what not. I can email you if you drop your email here when I’m done with the list and dollar estimates
