Research the region. Know where you want to go. Alaska is A LOT bigger then most people realize. We drove, and will be driving again. No trailer. The Alcan is one of the most beautiful drives you will ever see. Just take your time, stay on top of road conditions. (Especially when you cross into Alaska) If you fly, cars are a bit more expensive up there, then down below. If you try the ferry, know that the schedules fill up very fast. If you wait to look for a job until you get up there, be prepared, no one is in any hurry, and it may be a month before you even hear anything about job you applied for.

I've lived off grid for six years in a tent on the Appalachian trail. Nothing sexy about it just living life

Usually people that live off grid here live in a real building. I have an off road off grid place that has solar with inverter and batteries. It also has an electric freezer, propane fridge, RV water heater with pump and a cistern. There are many places like that here. You cannot drive a car to it., maybe a truck but it will need some body work after the trip. I lived there part time for years with a travel job where I only worked about half a year.

Most people who are attracted to the idea of an off grid lifestyle just need to unplug their wifi and hide their phones for 1 day a week. Spending quiet, quality time with their family or unplugging from this modern world doesn't require moving a thousand miles into a remote location.

I’m literally your last point. I overanalyze a lot of things because I want to know what I’m getting myself in while my boyfriend says “im down when we moving” 😅😅

I've been joking with friends that TH-cam needs to make more "Alaskan living ON Grid," content.

I’m currently looking for a teaching position in Anchorage and I’m curious about the “renting sene” up there. I’m fresh out of college and looking for a new experience.

It's going to be kinda sparse, but not impossible. Check out the crime maps of the areas you're considering so you don't end up getting a cheap apartment but that you pay for with a high crime rate.

Thank you for the videos! Very helpful. You mentioned the ferry. We are moving up to Palmer in the next month and were counting on the ferry, as we have animals, plants, etc. to bring with us, but have found out they aren’t running to Whittier. Do you have any helpful insight on this? Thank you so much!!!

I am a owner operator of a painting business an am planning on moving up there next year, how would that service do up there?

Not very well since there’s a lot of competition already

I find many people that move up here are do it yourself types. In over 40 years of owning few different places I’ve only hired a painter once because of a deadline versus my day job schedule. About half the houses in our subdivision are owner built.
I even have a pretty nice high pressure sprayer with 75’ of hose I’ve lent out to a few friends.
