Just found your channel, have watched several so far, skipped ahead to Q&A to learn more. I saw in comments on early vid you were in Morrow Co., I am east of Johnstown. Thought I would live on this land all my adult life, bought 20 acres in 1982. The Intel buildup will likely force me out, property values going thru roof. Destroying farmland hundreds of acres at a time. So sad, the entire area will eventually change and not be rural. Dream of Alaska, but CRPS/RSD means I struggle here, realistically I know couldn’t do AK. Was nice to see someone start out building and not in mud, swampy area. Good luck, will be watching.
Yes, I’ve been following the Intel mess. Sad it’s destroying such a quite rural area. I used to go to the huge flea market/coon dog trials there in Johnstown every year as a kid. Sorry about your medical condition, RSD is so painful. If you can’t move to AK maybe you’ll get the opportunity to visit one day🤞 I can’t tell you how happy I am that we aren’t building in the mud also 😆 Thanks for joining us on our journey!
Thanks for this video. I watched your videos starting with the oldest....hoping I could learn your "story". Your videos are greatly improving. I think that you will be successful with TH-cam.
hi from Oregon! i just stumbled upon your channel today and am excited to get caught up on your adventures. i too love watching Simple Living Alaska and following Eric and Ariel as they learned as they went along the same as you are. they've tackled the solar and explain everything they do very well. they've done the chickens and built the coop, they've learned the dip netting and learning to fish with the rules and regulations. i hope you check them out and let them help you along your journey.
Hey guys, Wild Alaskan Homestead here, just watched you Q and A, My wife has talked to you guys or commented on your videos a few times, I think she was the one TH-cam channel you were trying to to think of. We live out by Anchor Point, I’m her husband Alan Nelson, I’m actually in Vermont working a Nuclear job right now but I put in my notice at work and should home in a couple weeks, We’ll have to get together sometime for a chat and a BBQ. I’m not a professional at playing guitar and haven’t played for a few years but I love playing Bluegrass and Country music and I play a little mandolin also Ha Ha ( I guess all mandolin’s are little. I’ll eventually buy me a Dobro to learn how to play. Anyway I’d love to go hunting and fishing with you guys some times and We’d love to hang out sometime and get to know you guys, We’ll eventually have horses out there so we can maybe spend a day riding horses, My wife and I used to train our own horses and other people’s, We live on 80 acres over by Nikaevsk
Hi Alan, yes it was your channel Craig was thinking of. We’d love to meet up. Ride some horses, play guitar, do some fishing, eat some tasty food. Sounds like a good time. Look forward to meeting you. If you’re on Facebook send me a pm when you get back to town or our email is in the description.
Sorry guys We don’t have Facebook, for Us there was to much crazy stuff on there so we switched to IPhone that doesn’t have Facebook added but We’ll be in touch. Thanks.
Very interesting information and it's nice to learn some background on the two of you. I've only just started watching today, six videos in so far, but feel like I already know you.
By the way, on dipnetting… Kasilof is obviously much closer to y’all, but the fish suck IMHO. The south side of Kenai has sockeye and Kasilof only has Silver. The silvers are much smaller, and don’t taste as good. Definitely either do Kenai, or go crazy and hit up the copper. Both Copper and Kenai are better with a boat, especially copper because otherwise you are climbing up and down a veritable cliff face and that sucks. If you want a King you can almost guarantee you’ll get in on the copper, and I’ve never seen one in Kenai or Kasilof. Kenai and Kasilof can easily handle the full 5’ hoop. Copper you are much better off with a 3’hoop because the current will drag you like crazy with a big net there. Anyhow, good luck dipping! It is a great time, and so nice to get that food stores.
Great Q & A. Thanks for being so open and honest with all the background and financial questions. Great information for those looking to make a move to Alaska.
Valdez, North Pole, Nome. They are all so different. North Pole will allow the opportunity to drive and check out both Fairbanks and Anchorage areas. Valdez is supposed to be the prettiest spot in the state and Nome will allow you to experience village life.
You guys made such a great choice buying in Anchor Point! Great amenities on both sides in Ninilchik and Homer.. Sterling is my least favorite town on the peninsula, no community feeling.. just feels like a bedroom community for Soldotna. Kasilof, Clam Gulch, Ninilchik, and Anchor Point are underrated gems!
Yeah I asked because no one told us when we started on our cabin either.. you can apply for an owner-builder card with the Kenai Peninsula Borough and show it at home depot or SBS and anything that’s a “permanent fixture” in your home will be tax free. It doesn’t work online but you can go to Home Depot and they can order anything on their website to the store and then that will be tax free when you pick it up.. apparently someone will come once a year to look at your property and make sure you made any progress but I’ve heard it’s a very simple process and well worth the savings💵
@@ouralaskahomestead it’s form number 3984. @@frankn267 yes, we lived in Hobe Sound for a couple years. Our house was an older stick built and oddly enough for the area, had a basement. We were there for Hurricane Wilma in 2005, the eye went right over us. That was an experience! Thank you for watching and the good conversation 😊
What are the local truck driving job opportunities like in Alaska? I've lived in Florida my whole life, with all the new people that has moved here over the years this state has zero opportunities left. I can no longer afford to buy a house in my home state let alone attempt to start a family I'm ready to leave
Check for positions on the North Slope. They work rotational 3 weeks on 3wks off type schedule and pay is good. I know people who live in Texas and just fly up for their rotation. Regular trucker positions within the state pay is similar to the lower 48 and housing is no cheaper. The economy is a mess.

Many do. We hope to get some salmon this year and since we don’t have any way to freeze it we will most likely smoke it then can it. Probably won’t try for a moose until we get a good solar set up and have a deep freezer.
We’re planning on a small garden this year along with a handful of chickens and ducks. There was an old porcelain bathtub left on the property im planning on turning into a duck pond and Craig builds the cutest chicken coops for me. We do have a lot of moose that visit so I’ll have to be sure and put up a tall fence so they don’t eat my veggies. Next year we’ll expand and add meat rabbits and maybe a pig or two.

You both had so much information to share that at times you shared it simultaneously LOL But you managed to keep it real by correcting one another over misquoted dates and other equally critical minutia. Those veiled criticisms' aside I have nothing but respect for the both of you and how you reached this point in your journey. I await each Vlog release with great anticipation to be able to see your progress toward "getting ready for Winter" If I lived nearby I would come cut down some dead standing and get your firewood supply in better shape. Take care of each other and stay safe!
Yes, after 25yrs of marriage we don’t even realize we’re doing it but many viewers noticed. We’ll make an effort to avoid speaking for or over each other in the future.
I wish we had dead standing. Further north there is plenty of beetle kill to harvest but fortunately the infestation didn’t make it this far south. We don’t have a single dead tree on the property. Thanks for joining us 😊
I am acutely aware of the talking for/over because after 24 years of marriage that is also my reality@@ouralaskahomestead LOL
I can't believe how many states they lived in. I still live in my same state and hometown my hall life.
We are in Soldotna and it's a little cheaper but make an Anchorage run and hit Costco and really stock up there.
I have 4 dogs and a cat. They are my little loves. I feel safer with them.
Your dogs are Beautiful! Tugs at my heart strings.
Loved the A Q video. I wished I started watching from beginning but I didn’t , know I’m going back. What a journey you have been on. So enjoy all the videos. Always looking for a new post. Keep it up, you two are amazing.
Thank you so much. Lots of projects coming up.
If you can’t move to AK maybe you’ll get the opportunity to visit one day🤞
I can’t tell you how happy I am that we aren’t building in the mud also 😆
Thanks for joining us on our journey!
Thanks for this video. I watched your videos starting with the oldest....hoping I could learn your "story".
Your videos are greatly improving. I think that you will be successful with TH-cam.
Thank you 😊
Hello there nice to know you both good luck to you thank you for sharing and your time👍👍👍👍
It will always be Barrow for older Alaskans 😊
Great to see you guys 👍🖼
hi from Oregon! i just stumbled upon your channel today and am excited to get caught up on your adventures. i too love watching Simple Living Alaska and following Eric and Ariel as they learned as they went along the same as you are. they've tackled the solar and explain everything they do very well. they've done the chickens and built the coop, they've learned the dip netting and learning to fish with the rules and regulations. i hope you check them out and let them help you along your journey.
Glad to have you along on our journey
Roscos is good but Keen Kow is awesome. For us the 45 min. drive is worth the meal.
By the way, on dipnetting…
Kasilof is obviously much closer to y’all, but the fish suck IMHO.
Thanks for the tips!
Great video Craig and Chandra
Thank you 😊
Great Q & A. Thanks for being so open and honest with all the background and financial questions. Great information for those looking to make a move to Alaska.
if you had some big trees you could get a portable saw mill i use a chainsaw mill but its a very slow process
Awesome job.
Great informative video!
New to your channel.... enjoy you all very much!!
Thank you for joining us 🩵
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
You Gys are good people ❤god Bless you greating Form Germany
Love your Dogs we have 2 GSDs great job on videos
You guys are great! Thank you!
Thank you for watching 😊
How much property do you have? I have to say have enjoyed watching you getting into your property and building your house this year .
Just over 3 acres
It’s good content I’m from Indiana but live off grid in Colombia. I’m in the mountains
It’s a hard life but well worth it.
Good information! I’m about to start working remotely. What 3 towns/cities would you stay in for 2 mths each? Going to spend 6 mths in Alaska.
Valdez, North Pole, Nome. They are all so different. North Pole will allow the opportunity to drive and check out both Fairbanks and Anchorage areas. Valdez is supposed to be the prettiest spot in the state and Nome will allow you to experience village life.
@@ouralaskahomestead Thanks for the info! I was thinking about Valdez, but never thought of North Pole or Nome. Thanks again!
I'd take you fishing some day next summer. I go out of Homer quite a bit in June/July. I'll check in. Good luck with your projects
We’d love to join you. Would help tremendously to learn to fish in the area 🐟
Do you guys have your builder’s card to buy building materials tax free?
@@manne4291 no. Please tell me more. I’ve not heard of such a thing.
@@manne4291 thanks for the info. I’ll look it up. That’ll help tremendously!
@@ouralaskahomestead it’s form number 3984.
There’s a great video on TH-cam called “Alaska Surf Fishing Secrets with Randy Sisco” if you want to get into fishing for halibut from the beach near you, boats are money pits so if you can catch halibut with no boat that’s a win! also he gives lessons out of Ninilchik.. link is in the description of that video.. I’m looking forward to watching your Alaska Journey on here!
😢Unfortunately Rosco’s is up for sale so if it switches hands it may not stay “best place ever” status!
It’s been for sale for years I just keep hoping no one buys it and the owners stick around.
Not to be a Debbie Downer here but.. .. as super awesome as being close to the Ocean is..... have you looked into the Tsunami Dangers in your area?
Yes. We are high enough for it not to be an issue.
Very nice intro.
Maybe Ford should sponsor you for wearing the hat
Nice video! Good info & background. You guys don't look old enough to have grandkids. lol. That small square box is kind of irritating though.
videos are interesting so invest and I know for sure you will recoup the money back in nice and cameras. And set up an account with patron.
Looks like Craigs getting a GoPro for Christmas, shhhh…🤫

I’m still trying to figure Patreon out so it may take a bit before it’s all current.
Hey do you know Sean in Alaska he has You tube channel he does fishing he is near Holmer Alaska works in the suppermarket there in that town he is all round good man build his own cabbin like yours he just got the roof on to he might teach you all the rules ??maybe oh i love your channel to your great people to know im in Australia nearly retitred
Hi, We do not know Sean but I did watch some of his videos at your suggestion a couple months ago but we have not met him.
New subscriber, my wife and l are moving there in 05 or 2006. Hopefully Kenai Alaska.
Kenai is a nice centrally located area. Two hour drive to Homer, a little over three to Anchorage. It’s where we do most of our shopping. Lots of great fishing!
Thanks for joining us 👋
@@ouralaskahomestead Welcome
I dream of moving to Alaska
We did for years too. Finally got tired of dreaming and just did it.
Good video guys
You guys are exactly right and you made the right choice Ohio has turned into a pee hole just about all the woke states are going out of their minds it's just not even safe to go to events anymore being in Michigan next to the Ohio line I get a slice of both States stay blessed be safe
Where in Florida did you live? We're in South Florida Palm Beach County. Close to Boynton Beach in Broward County.
A little further north, up by Jupiter/Tequesta
@@ouralaskahomestead We have cousins living in Jupiter. We purchased a 4,000 sq/ft house with a solar-heated inground pool, lanai, 100% hurricane-proof roof, windows, and doors. We paid $370K all cash for our house. Back in 2013. We have three married sons and five grandchildren who remain living in New York Long Island. They come here, we go there. I was a attorney retired and a custom home builder.
@@frankn267 nice! My FIL remodels and builds houses. Built a few on Jupiter Island back in the ‘70’s. They’ve probably all been torn down and replaced with mansions by this point.
@@ouralaskahomestead Mostly all houses in Florida are (CBS) Concrete, Block, and Stucco. Houses built after 2002 must be 100% hurricane-rated. I like what you're doing up there in Alaska and for all the right personal reasons.
New subscriber love your channel
Thank you for watching 💜
Can you add on to your house for more room
We probably can. I think once we get the wrap around porch and arctic entry completed and all Craigs tools outside the house won’t feel as cramped.
It is bovious anyone asking why u have so many dogs have never owned a German Shepherds. Hands down the best breed of dog on earth. We have 2 working line shepherds would have 10 of them if it was possible!
You are 💯% correct, they are the best!
@@ouralaskahomesteadI love the malinois too since I've seen some of them!! But I also love malamute, rottweiler,I had half rott half lab and she was wonderful! Thing is the dogs are so smart way smarter than myself! I've had rat terriers which are great poodles my daughter had the little fluffy dogs that look like a dust mop, can't think of the breed, also another little dog Scottish terrier or something like that. But they've all been wonderful pets and we're rescue animals! If I had a lot of money I'd have a rescue kennel shelter,so many abused abandoned animals!!
What kind of boat do you have ?
It was an old Loanstar that was abandoned and needed more work than we have time for. We sold it and do not have a boat now.
been thinking about moving up there solo would it be feasible?
A lot of people do, just depends on the person.
What part of Ohio are you from. And do you have any ties to Ky.
No ties to KY other than visiting the KY Horse Park regularly growing up. We’re from the Marion/Mt.Gilead area, north of Columbus.
@@ouralaskahomestead I have lots of family in Mansfield and friends. Good luck in Alaska. Have fun
@@Papaws-Hobbies been to Mansfield MANY times. If you ever get up that way try out Porkys 🐖 the best smash burger anywhere! Been there since the ‘40s
Do you Alaska people can fish for salmon and hunt moose
Many do. We hope to get some salmon this year and since we don’t have any way to freeze it we will most likely smoke it then can it. Probably won’t try for a moose until we get a good solar set up and have a deep freezer.
🤘
What about sewage… and used water
No sewer, we just have an outhouse.
Will yall make a garden and raise animals
We’re planning on a small garden this year along with a handful of chickens and ducks. There was an old porcelain bathtub left on the property im planning on turning into a duck pond and Craig builds the cutest chicken coops for me. We do have a lot of moose that visit so I’ll have to be sure and put up a tall fence so they don’t eat my veggies. Next year we’ll expand and add meat rabbits and maybe a pig or two.
i was not going to subscribe but i seen you ford hat lol
Wife’s got a Jeep but we’re Ford people.
What do you for in come?
We go over that in our FAQ video, the short of it, I’m a nurse.
