    TH-cam answers all! I took that exact piece off my hosebib, and thought the threads were ruined or something, since I couldn't put a hose on it. My hosebib even has the exact green handle as yours. I was afraid I was going to have to replace the hosebib. But, thanks to your video, I know what to do. Thanks!

    Helpful video, and thanks. But not clear why the new Home Depot vacuum breaker couldn't screw directly onto the faucet. The threads on the faucet look to be finer than the ones for the hose, but the vacuum breaker has those finer threads so seems it should have no problem being screwed on. I've just installed a similar vac brkr (from Lowes, but looks just like the one you used), and I didn't need an adapter.

      Steve Kohn well it's been seven months since you asked this question and I hope you found the answer but if you haven't , here it is.
      If you listen to the video again, he says commercial hose bibs. On those bibs (faucets) the thread is a Male Pipe Thread (MPT) which is a "fine" thread. As opposed to the Male Hose Thread (MHT) which is a coarse thread. This is done so that you can't just screw in a hose, without the vacuum breaker. They are found on businesses because of regulations and legalities. Since businesses are held to a higher standard. Another reason maybe to prevent water theft.
      Your faucet at home is not required to be a commercial type. Just residential, and it has MHT so you wouldn't need that adapter.

    There is a glaring error in this video. How did you remove the set screw to begin with? The set screws break off and are meant to be permanent so that people do not remove these. This tamper-proof set screw is a code requirement. Secondly how did you tighten down the set screw at the end without it breaking off since they are designed to break off with a very minimal amount of force?

    I bought the one in the "~~Buy the one in the video on Amazon~~" link and has the coarse female threads (same as the hose). It is not a Brasscraft but a "Homewerks VAC-BFP-Z4B Vacuum Breaker, 3/4-Inch, Brass"

    If bypassing (removing) vacuum breaker and replacing with old school non vacuum spigot, doesn’t that make it so water can stay in pipe entering house and potentially freeze and break pipe in really cold temps?

    I couldn't find a cheap vacuum breaker/ back flow preventer with fine threads in the female end. I can't tell if the one on Amazon has the fine threads or not? Home Depot had one, but it is to be attached to older faucets with standard threads. Any help?

    • @scottmessinger2410
      @scottmessinger2410 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, he doesn't make that clear because he uses the term "Commercial threading" for both the brass part and the faucet, but the "commercial threading" is 2 types of threads. The threading on the brass part is different than the threading on the faucet. And both of them are different than the threading on the hose end. So the original adapter ring is needed to do on the faucet. Then the brass part (single stage vacuum breaker) attaches to the adapter. Then the hose can screw on the brass part.

    Get rid of it. There is no way anything on the outside yard or garden can get 'sucked' back into the house nor city water supply!!
    1. The house water pressure is higher than anything outside!
    2. The valve is shut OFF normally and even if it were open, you'd still have to over come the internal pressure inside the house and if all the water were shut off, you'd have to apply a tremendous amount of external pressure to get the water from the outside to flow backwards into the house!
    3. The city water pressure is about 100 PSI and there is no way in hell anything is flowing BACKWARDS into the city water supply!!!

    Great video but I hate these governmental mandated vacuum breakers! In the townhouse where I lived, they put the hose bib inside the garage. Guess what? Every darn time I shut off the water after washing a car etc, even if I relieve pressure at the hose head, the vacuum breaker spews water all over the garage floor! Annoying to say the least. We lived without these things for a hundred years! Someone please explain to me the physics of how water would backflow through a gate or ball valve?! To me this is just some ones attempt to mandate a product for which they have the contract to produce! Furthermore, the genius plumbing contractor ground off the set screw to make it difficult to remove! Just total nonsense in my not so humble opinion.

    • @TrailerDayz
      @TrailerDayz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many share your humble opinion. Bad design all around.
      The danger is if, say, you were filling your bucket with soapy water (chemicals) and the city water pressure drops at the same time, the water can be sucked back into the water system. Very rare, but possible.
      Replace it with a SpigotMaster and just add a cheapo $5 vacuum breaker downstream somewhere if you are worried about it.
