Two notes is seven years is just as much a testament to Oldman's fantastic acting abilities as it is to Nolan's ability to direct.
Not really. I would feel left out.
@@Woodsaras how YOU would feel doesn't really mean anything. Oldman is sure in his abilities and is sure that chris is sure of his abilities, otherwise he would get more notes
@@harryyyyyyyyyyy7273 Nah, your comment is just clueless. These people will never be honest with journalists. They will never speak negatively about their colleagues, or critique them because they are afraid not to get work in the fufure. Hence they will speak like politicians. Just listen actors on actors. Fkng pathetic. Everybody is deep in each other azz, though in reality things are always much more heated.
@@harryyyyyyyyyyy7273 Oldman is sure in his abilities? Doubt that. He probably doesn't give a fk, because he's old.
He wasn't that old lol he was only 47 years old when the first film came out so he was even 1-2 years younger when the production started, he was more like 45 at most @@Woodsaras
Nolan knew he was working with a master. Both are on top of their craft.
I think that's why the minimal amount of direction (a note) worked, and no more was needed. They're both pros.
What not how.
nolan is not at top of his craft, someone like Fincher or Scorsese
@@anshtripathi7035what’s that based on?
@@anshtripathi7035Well if we’re just gonna spout meaningless opinions, Nolan left Scorsese in the dust a while ago. Just compare Irishman to Oppenheimer. The Irishman was bloated and overindulgent while Oppenheimer was a cinematic tour de force and a turning point for Nolan.
He inceptioned Gary with one sentence.
True 😂
Inception- based on a true story!
👉🤣 ... Nice one!
LMAO
Ugh finally a proper use of the word "Inception" as verb
*Well, I could see the opposite side being even more impressed:*
Nolan: I just walked over to Gary and said one thing, "There's more at stake", and that phrase alone was enough for Gary too completely nail the scene and do exactly what I wanted to see"
Right, that’s really what happened. Gary Oldman is just that good.
That's when you know you're in tune
Tbh, i think that is the real story here - nolan is an ok director (can't stand most of his films since Batman but whatever) but Oldman is one of the finest actors on the planet - he doesn't really need much direction and Nolan is good enough to know that.
As an actor, (& I’m not an actor, but I play one on tv..) it would be so excellent to have a director mind meld with such clarity & precision. Of course you have to be a genius like GO to pickup the bandwidth.
@@malphadourYou can dislike someone’s films and still appreciate that they are a good Director. Excelling at their craft does not require that everyone enjoys their work.
I’ll watch anything that Gary Oldman is starring in. Superb Actor & can transform himself into any character. Love him!
You tell that to Gary Oldman because that's all Gary Oldman needs. Mans an icon.
Gary Oldman, *and Nicolas Coppola* Tell Nicolas “more Nic Cage” and he instantly knows the assignment.

Gary is excellent in everything I've seen him in. What a great actor. Love him.
@@paulnicholson5997his range is incredible
@bobs8005 You should check him out in Brahm Stokers Dracula by Coppola. It's an oldy but a goodie. He plays Dracula 2 very different ways. The Monster version is terrifying and the civilized version he played like an old aristocrat who's aged like a fine wine. It's an incredible performance.
Well... you are also Gary Oldman. You are one of the best living actors and I would imagine you dont need alot of direction. It is always great watching you perform.

The way he can use just one word and like wow. People are still talking about it | "What do you mean everyone?" | "EVERYONE!!!"
Gary Oldman and Christopher Walken are two actors with outstanding vocal rhythm.
Absolutely. I’m not anywhere near the field of acting, but I feel better for just hearing a thoughtful master speak of his craft.
I had no idea he was English 😮
👍🏽👍🏽
It’s a crime it took so long for Oldman to win that Oscar.
Pfft. Tellin ya. It’s a cold world they have to deal with. Dark side to it. Kudos to the ones who aren’t sucked in by it
It's a blessing. Look at how crazy the actors who win an Oscar prematurely.
That’s what makes Nolan great. He doesn’t necessarily go with stories or events, but with mood, feeling and experience. That’s what makes his movies so dynamic.
Nolan is clearly someone who says what you need to hear at the right time and not just what he wants to say all the time and that's a fantastic immensely selfless relationship to have with your actors.
I had to give that a bit of thought then but I got there in the end and understood your point 😂
@paulanthony5274 i still dont get it, care to simplify it?
@@albertoramirez9429Some people talk a lot, saying many unnecessary things because they like to hear themselves talk, it feeds their ego. Apparently Nolan doesn’t do that. He’s a man of few words, so when he _does_ speak, it’s very worthy and important
@@albertoramirez9429 also he knows what the actor needs to hear to compreend what he wants, a great communicator can give the same instruction to different kind of people in the way they need to hear it (like a teacher changing the way he explains the subject when a student doesn't get it)
Remarkable statement.
Gary Oldman is an absolutely phenomenal actor. He can be the most intimidating, scariest person on screen or the funniest, most loving. I know he's far from underrated but I feel like he should be way more acknowledged for how great he truly is
I really think his versatility is off the charts. he has played in his career so many different types of characters, aceing them all... he is always believable, he can fit himself in every shaped mold and becomes that person. He is brilliant!

Gary has such a pleasant voice and accent. I never tire of listening to his interviews.
I wish he will start narrating books in his older age!
The key here is having amazing, skilled actors to work with, so you know you don't even need to give lots of notes. He instantly knew what he meant.
That also speeks to the legendary talent of the actor
According to Michael Jai White, Chris Nolan is a very calm director, the environment was very relax according to him. Most of the great directors are terrors when it comes to their work but Nolan has a very friendly approach that make people want to work with him.
A true British gentleman
The mirror of Cameron who was a bit of a nightmare to work with by all accounts.
Gary oldman won a spot on my top 5 when he was in Dracula and he has held that spot for what 30 give or take years.
F#$kin legend
Oh yes
The metamorphosis he does on his characters is some of the best in cinema/TV history. Seriously.. there's some actors you barely feel it's Gary Oldman and he still delivers the hell out of it
For me it was "State of Grace...." 1990.
When it comes to versatility and litteraly becoming the character Gary is the best he can go from playing a straight cop like commissioner Gordon to someone like Sid Vicious and there both 2 completely different entities mans a chameleon
@@americanwoman445 Same. I absolutely fell in love with Gary as Jackie (and Robin as Kathleen...felt so bad for her). That's one of the most overlooked movies ever made.

I love seeing my favorite actor giving praise to someone else. He’s a class act.

A fantastic piece of direction for a fantastic actor who immediately perceived the meaning and reflected it. I don't think every actor can do like Gary.

what a class act Gary Oldman is...and a helluva actor
Talent identifies talent
I worked at a theatre when Dark Knight came out. For 3 or 4 months any time I had a free couple of minutes I would slip into a showing and watch for as long as I could. For as great as Heath was I still came away from that experience thinking Gary’s performance was the best in the movie. So understated yet always emotionally present. A true master class
The little look and embarrassed smile he gives when the accountant for the mob(his name escapes me) is delivered to the police station is so simple yet pure class.
90s Gary Oldman is a masterclass in character acting. True Romance, The Professional, The Fifth Element, Beethoven,& Dracula. The acting is flawless and each character couldn’t be more different than the other. Method actors need not live as the character 24/7 but just talk to Gary & get his secret garden of character ability. On par or better than Brando, Daniel Day Lewis and anyone else you can name. The diversity of his filmography is astounding! 😳
His masterclasses aren't isolated to the 90s. He's absolutely killing it as Jackson Lamb in Slow Horses atm.. and his Churchill was amazing as well!
@@3655butters Churchill possibly but not Lamb. The character doesn’t have the depth or uniqueness as his younger characters. My fave is True Romance & The Professional, not to forget Zod in Fifth Rlrment. He’s too old to be a chsnealon anymore. It happens to every actor. You csn play old characters when young but not young when old. You think he’s playing Drexel as a 70 y/o? Parts dry up for actors. It’s why he’s doing tv now, not film and why Hopkins plays Odin in a freegin superhero movie(s). You have your time to be any age or person when 20-40 but typically after you’re relegated to much more narrow set of characters.
You missed The Firm and Leon. Those two are amazing performances.
JFK as well, he nailed the complexities and oddities of Lee Harvey Oswald brilliantly

One of the greatest actors of our time.
Much respect to Gary Oldman and Chris Nolan for great movies
Gary Oldman is one of my all-time favorite actors, and I had no idea he is British
Then you definitely need to watch his portrayal of Winston Churchill.
In Darkest Hour. He disappears into Winston Churchill completely
And for a really low-key restrained minimal performance, watch him in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy as George Smiley.
I don’t think he raises his voice all the way through the movie and he does that clever trick of making you think about him even when he’s not on the screen.
Gary Oldman is just amazing.
That’s why casting good actors is so important. Because that’s all they need
Honestly it’s crazy how underrated this man is.. He’s up there with DDL in terms of embodying his character.. Problem is he’s never the lead… but he’s one of the greatest character actors of all time and a great antagonist..
Oldman is a really good actor. Haven't seen all of his films, but the ones I have seen, he was making a good job.

Total legend, such an unassuming man and can act most so called stars off the stage/screen.
I'd argue this is a better example of Gary's capabilities as an actor more than Nolands directing. Knowing how to translate that in the moment, and then explain break it down speaks volumes.
When you have an actor of Gary Oldman's calibre, you can ask him to do anything because he has that much raw talent he can do anything and really sell the scene!
