What I love about Lisa's channel is unlike the other self-absorbed gurus, she goes into depth about styles and cultural differences makeup wise, she talks about the history of makeup, the traditions and differences in products, she observes the differences in subtle styles like eyelashes and shading , she even uses drug store items in some of these tutorials and I don't feel it's just to snag the low end product users either. She doesn't talk about herself and her life and her money or friends, she talks about the products, the scents, the feels, the tricks. She doesn't brag about expensive brushes and she only brings out a couple of high end shades, not entire £100 palettes like others do. She doesn't spend 15 mins contouring or setting face makeup, no baking and bronzing and extensive highlighting. It's all chic and wearable and not Cakey. Love this channel!
+Lisa Eldridge wow didn't even expect you'd see it as you get so many comments! Do love the channel so much, been spending the last few days watching near nonstop (trying to get some ideas for a wedding guest look in a few weeks)! Can't believe never happened upon it up until recently. :)
Lisa seems so down to earth. She appreciates that others appreciate her hard work, research, invaluable knowledge and true artistry/creativeness. Lisa is the best on the planet. I listen to every word and trust every word. No 'guru' can compare. I'm so glad you brought your talent to TH-cam. It's been invaluable to people like me so thank you for sharing your wisdom with us laymen types 💛
Yes, this is why her look is one of timeless beauty. It's one thing to stay current and another to buy into the fads. When has anyone ever looked back on pics and think yesterday's fad was a good thing.
"Makeup becomes only dangerous when there's one style and we all have to conform to that one style," Well said, and thank you for being always so awesome and inspirational, Lisa xxx
I do a mix of both, Asian inspired for day and Western for night. Our makeup ideals in the US are a bit much for my liking for day. Asian inspired makeup suits me most, but I do enjoy a little warmth for day. I am fascinated with Asian skincare so I would also LOVE for you to do a video on skin care. I've been following a Korean skincare routine for the past 5 years and it was the best decision I made for my skin. You're the best xo.
+Adriana Valentina Hey Adriana, if you're interested in Korean skincare and makeup, the website testerkorea dot com sells a huge variety of great products from drug store level to luxury brands. I order makeup from their site regularly and often get multiple skincare/ bb cream samples with my order. Brands I keep going back to at the moment are Etude House, Cosrx (skincare), Skinfood, Missha, and Holika Holika. I'm not affiliated with the site in any way but I thought I'd share since I've had great experiences ordering from there. Hope this helps!
I can see this being expanded into a full documentary type piece. What a pleasure to watch, not just the makeup technique but I also there were so many interesting facts to be learnt!
The generosity of Ms. Eldridge never ceases to amaze me! It is astounding that she offers this education to virtually anybody for free on TH-cam. And what an education it is… The words "thank you" really seem inadequate, but they will have to suffice. Thank you, Lisa Eldridge.
I really appreciate that you explained how you felt you were qualified to talk about makeup from the East Asian market and also the Western makeup market. I also appreciate how you've differentiated East Asia from other parts of Asia instead of lumping them together, and even Korean trends from Japanese trends, styles and approaches to makeup :)
Nowadays on TH-cam quite many makeup gurus/artist are actually "salesman". They are not doing makeup, they are selling makeup! There are "discount code" under their description box blow, and you can't tell who is really honest and who is not because they are sponsored. As viewers, we have to seek the honest and skilled ones like Lisa and keep on watching !
Am I the only one who notices the trends seem to be opposite of what would occur naturally to us? (just generalizing ofc) Westerners tend to have more rounded eyes, but desire a more almond shape, and vice versa for Easterners. Same with the skin, the people who have naturally paler skin find being tan more desirable, and those with tanner skin seem to favor lighter skin. Like my daughters lol...they all have curly hair and wish it was straight. I have straight hair, and wish it was curly. *sighs* Beautiful video, loved it..thank you Ms. Eldridge!
lol Everyone always want what they don't have and takes for granted (or just gets bored of) what they do. It's fascinating how it up in all sorts of areas: height, hair/eye/skin color, hair texture, cup size, etc.
I've been watching Nikki tutorials for over a year, and I've only seen a few of Lisa's videos, but I already like her style of tutorial and education more.
Nobody does it better. You are an historian, a teacher, an artist, and thank you for it all! Love these looks! Makes me want to play with my own makeup and try a mix of some of these trends and see what works. Cheers, Lisa!!! xx
I prefer the Asian style makeup. It does make people look a lot more youthful plus you can get your face done a heck of a lot faster.. I noticed some people actually look really aged when contoured and highlighted, and not in a good way. You are right though about trends coming and going both in makeup and clothes. I need to find me some of those Asian eyelashes!
+Ss yp Asian seems geared to looking like a little girl or a doll. But on the other hand, I think the western look looks very harsh. honestly I would prefer something in the middle. I don't want to look like a child but I don't want to be so made up like the Western look either
In a way, the Asian style makeup is relatively fool-proof in my opinion, and the Western style require a bit more skill in order to look good because you are working with deeper colors, and there is a lot of shaping. You can easily look dirty if all the smoky shadow and bronzer are not blended correctly.
@ TheKillerQueenFan It's not at all about looking like a doll or a little girl. That's a presumption because we live in a culture where girls as young as 14 wear so much dark make up it makes them like 24, and they behave much older than they really should. (Though if anything happens to them it's not their fault.) In other countries it's different, people get to grow up slower or take a step back and do make up that suits natural looks. Would you say Marie Antoinette was trying to look like a doll or a little girl? Likely not since no one makes that connection.
The difference between the two cultures is astonishing! One aspires to be younger and innocent and the other aims for a sultry and mature look. Amazing work, thank you Lisa and regards from sunny Dubai.
I love how you give us more to think about than just products. I love the history of makeup and how it's used across different cultures. After reading Face Paint and watching your historical videos--I'm even more obsessed. You are wonderful and easy to learn from!
As a Korean I really enjoyed watching this! Like you said, there are some variations depending on individual preferences but overall I feel like you really nailed the "trend" :) Thank you for always uploading interesting content. I love how your videos show what you can do with makeup; your passion for it is so infectious :) In this video it was refreshing to see Asian makeup done by a Westerner(correctly, too!) Much love and support from S.Korea
I really like the video but I must say as an European, and as a Finn, that the western look portrayed here is more of an American look. Europeans generally wear less and more natural make up from my experiences. Also the overdrawn lips, strong arched brows, heavier eye make up and use of fake eyelashes, wanting to look tanned and contouring/highlighting trends are way more of an American thing. I've seen the contouring and highlighting becoming more of a trend lately here in Finland too, but it's still very subtle compared to the American way. Of course there are probably differences in northern European trends and trends in other parts of Europe but ours is almost an opposite of this western look haha! Anyway, the video is really informative and well made. She's doing an amazing work as a make up artist! :)
ladyjaneofdunans oh, ok I looked it up, and my word it really is something. Is it some kind of Japanese theatre makeup, or kind of like drag queens in western countries. Sorry if you find the comparison to drag queens offensive because that's kind of what geisha makeup reminded me of :)
TH-camrs take note! This is how you share makeup looks without cultural discrimination. Lisa approaches with such respect, genuine interests and embraces all culture. Sometimes what we want is just a clean, fun yet clinical dissection of makeup products or looks. Eastern eyes look so good on Lisa, they're so adorable and such a breathtaking fresh take like never seen before in all other vids, which is so rare cause she makes almost flawless looks throughout her youtube history.
Oh my I would be such a natural youthful beauty if I lived in Korea. I hope the "eye bag look" is one of those Korean trends that makes it over here to the US!
I've seen tutorials similar to this, but they were never as informative as this particular video, tbh. You're an inspiration to young ladies (and gentlemen)!
Hi Lisa, I'm a chinese makeup artist working with lots of western casts and models for tv's and commercials. It is for me I find a little tricky to sometimes "choose" a makeup style on asian ladies because first of not all of them want really pale bright dewy and skin that looks like skin base, straight brows that make them look innocent and youthful, light eye makeup that enhances and make the eyes look mega big. In general the eyes are the main focus of the whole makeup look. Not sure if you've ever used a double eyelid tape, it is certainly a technique to master in order to match both eyes so that they look more awake, rounder and wider. Also asian ladies love to use thin lower false lashes(especially for weddings n photoshoots) to further enhance the "big eye" look. For night look, they tend to lean towards smokey because again it focuses on the eyes and makes the eyes look bigger. It is definitely a must to find out the clients style and preference xx
Thank you for distinguishing between Japan and Korea in terms of their trends, instead of portraying the entirety of East Asia as a monolith in terms of beauty. Really well done video!
Thank you so much for sharing this video with us! As a make-up artist, I got tired of watching most of the channels here on youtube because it seems like everybody is doing the same makeup tutorial, reviewing the same products ... But you always inspire me and make me thirsty for more because you share real, valuable information. Thank you for that, Lisa
Vitalina yeah but not in a good way. The Asian makeup is something I would've done when I was 5 it's childish not really younger looking. I do love how she did the western makeup. The cat eyes were really sexy. :) and in my opinion more youthful than the other style.
I'm a Japanese beauty blogger and I loved this video! Just to share one thing -Igari is the name of the makeup artist who 'invented' the look, it does not describe the look. It's called 'ophero make' which comes from the word 'pheromone'. Apparently Japanese girls think the drunk-look is appealing for men and cute. Ms. Igari keeps inventing new looks, which I hardly understand to be honest, but overall I can say Japanese girls are pretty conservative when it comes to makeup.
to be honest, the phenomenon of "Asian flush" is freaking annoying. Many Asians have this gene where they are more susceptible to the effects of alcohol. I am Asian and for me, red wine is the worst offender. In addition to "the flush" I get unappealing red splotches that extend to my chest. it can get itchy too. just yuck. aside from the feels, I'm assuming males think alcohol lowers inhibitions because Japanese people are very polite and Conservative and therefore women are more fun, relaxed and approachable in this state?
arxsyn Cultural difference has made this phenomenon. I assume you are a westernized Asian teen :D However, in Japan, especially for those girls who tend to be traditional, they are still very fond of the look which makes them look girly, innocent and youth-like. For example, rose pink flushes make them look girly, sweet and soft. That's because the girly and sweet character for women is greatly promoted in the Japanese society. I think this is the major difference as compare to the western style. Make up can always reflect women's status... Btw, I'm not Japanese but Ive stayed there for quite long time. And I don't like the way women portray their image there
Nicole T I was curious about this, I know a Korean who was adopted by an American family & she just found out on vacation why she passes out from one beer! If men find that attractive...that seems rapey.
I am a beauty a Chinese beauty blogger based in Canada, I get a lot of hate on the fact that I apply my makeup differently than the majority of the Asian girls. As you said that make is dangerous when there is only one look, which seems to be the case in China right now. People have less access to products and trends in Asia: youtube and Instagram are blocked, make up products raise their prices drastically when they enter China, which is really sad. I am trying my best to show my Chinese viewers what's happening on this side of the world, it can be challenging sometimes but I am passionate about beauty and i am having fun along my journey.
I love watching you videos. It's not like other videos, just making themselves prettier. It's really educational. Feels like I'm on the beauty lecture. Thank you so much, for making these videos for us to enjoy, despite your busy working life.
Lisa, your videos never fail to be interesting, innovative and unique! You are unbelievably artistic and it is just an honour to be able to see your art! Thank you!
I love these types of videos. Lisa is by far the best makeup artist/creator on the planet. I trust every single word she says. I much prefer her style than any 'guru' on YT. I'm so glad you came to TH-cam because your advice has been invaluable to me. You're a true professional, a true artist and an amazing creator. 💛
Hello Lisa, I would love it if you did a French-style makeup - I don't really see the typical French makeup corresponding to the Western one you demonstrated here!
I really enjoyed this video and found it rather fascinating. The styles are so different and it was interesting to see them side by side with insight into the reason behind some of the eastern trends.
You're now my favorite artist on TH-cam. Beautiful work, educational content, relaxed and efficient in execution. After watching a few of your videos, its so clesr that a face is a blank canvas and you can make yourself into anything and suit any look when done right. Your face is perfection and you dont flaunt it. We just get to enjoy it without all the pretentiousness that comes with most other channels. Thank you!
In terms of makeup, this really was a great moment of education. I enjoyed every bit of it because every stroke or color choice came with a story. I watched it twice just in case I missed anything. You are the O.G of makeup.
Lisa you are such a professional and classy woman, your videos are so educational :) Your videos are the only ones i watch from the begining to the very end without skipping :) You really inspire me.
I like the Asian trends a lot. The fresh look is a sweet look and I like that one more than the bronzed up, almost fakey look of the Western side. Personally, I have a fascination with historical makeup styles. I tend to go really simple most of the time--namely because I'm usually running late for work--so the look I go for is 1940s. A bit of liner on the top lashline, some mascara, BB cream, rouge, powder, and lipstick. I'm usually done in about ten minutes, especially if I forgo using eyeshadows and just use BB cream and powder on my eyelids. There's an etsy seller called Litttlebits that has her own apothecary called "LBCC Histocial Apothecary". She takes old recipes from various centuries--lately she's been getting into 1920s and 1930s makeup and skincare recipes--and she recreates or modifies them with nicer ingredients. She has a white paint that I use as a base under my BB cream. It brightens and conceals pretty well on its own, even with a thin layer like i prefer, so around the eyes it's ideal. Layering BB cream on top helps to lighten the BB cream so it better matches my skin. This paint is a modified version of an old white face paint recipe that was popular in the 18th Century. She also sells many, many kinds of rouges. My favorites are the red-pink carmine based rouges of the Liquid Bloom of Roses and the 1922 formula of Rouge Vegetal. The Liquid Bloom is thinner while the Rouge Vegetal is much heavier in color. However, she has more orange red type colors in the Turkish Rouge and Rouge That Exactly Mimics Nature. There's also a very thin rouge that would have been popular in the Victorian period around the Civil War which takes several coats to get color to even show up on the cheeks and lips, but that's so you don't accidentally get too much. There's also a few powders you can choose from. She's recreated a powder recipe that comes from the late Victorian period that's similar to a 1922 powder called French White Poudre. It's talc with lemon and bergamot scenting it. (Smells great, but probably better with drier skin types.) But my favorite is the 1908 Rose Complexion Powder which is rice powder with a pink tint. (This is definitely better for oily skin. Even with my excessively oily skin it can dry out some areas on occasion, depending on the weather.) There's also cold creams, toners, astringents, hair oils, pomades... all kinds of things she's made with her own two hands. the lady does reenactment faires a lot with her husband. They largely do 18th Century styles, but they work with people who go for Regency and Victorian. She also does 1920s styles on herself and, again, meets and works with people who do the same for other sorts of reenactment faires. Many of the products she has are historical labels so that reenactors can keep them on their vanities where they can be seen and don't look out of place. I'm not a reenactor, but I do like the amount of research she puts into not only how the makeup looked and demonstrating it on herself, but also in her products.
Asian look basically is all about look younger, innocent and non-aggressive. Asian culture does not like women to have a strong personality. Many Asian girls find it so confusing that why western women want to highlight their cheekbones to make it look prominent. There is a traditional belief that women with high cheekbones will cause bad luck to their husband. I think this kind of belief is a stereotype because women with high cheekbones look dominant, powerful and seductive, and most Asian guys don't like it. Beauty trend is influenced by culture and gender stereotype. But I like this kind of comparison because it gives you all the choices you can have. I do a mixture of the eastern and western style, and I think it's good to have your own style.
+Xiangqi Li That's very interesting, I was thinking about the same thing, that maybe it's possible that... the issue is more complex or 'dictated' by other things, too... The western look is more ''strong, empowered, independent woman'' and the eastern is ''10 years younger, innocent'' and maybe a bit... obedient? That's too strong of a word. But looks more child-like and that means that it embodies more child-like qualities like a sort of delicacy, frailty, dependancy - I don't mean that in a bad way, just find it really interesting (I guess in some exaggerated trendy western looks or instagram make-up looks you could think about a sort of 'obedience' too... in the sense that you're making yourself 'exaggerately' sexy and attractive for possible future mates lol. I know, I know, for a lot of ppl it's not about that and it's just fun and ''for myself'', but it's just a thought... that maybe both types of looks, eastern and western, are geared towards / catered to what 'the other gender' finds sexier. Although oftentimes it looks rather intimidating and many men say they prefer less make-up. Hmmmm.)
+Irina V I think so too. I know japan has a specific fashion style catering to girls who are going on dates where it is girly but not too sexy or trendy to avoid putting guys off. Forgot the exact name though but was quite intrigued by it. Think it probably crosses over to makeup too. As for the cheekbone highlight, I think east asians tend to perceive a less prominent bone structure as slimmer/gentler/ more feminine. So many koreans go for zygoma/cheekbone reduction surgeries. I think mainly for asian countries it's more of cute whereas western countries go for sexy. I personally like to mix the styles too! I love high placed blush but prefer a more cat eye look.
Irina V yeah the argument about whether makeups are done for men is very interesting. As for me, I like doing makeups, sometimes I do it even whenI'm not going out, just to release stress. But I can't deny that if you go for makeup tutorials on the internet many of them will tell you what type of look will "catch the eye of men". I don't feel very comfortable with this, though. And another very interesting trend of Asian makeups is to make you look like you are not wearing makeups at all. It is equally time consuming to do this type of makeup. I think this trend started from South Korea and is getting so popular now. This type of look was inspired by the fact that Asian men do not like girls to do makeup, they think makeups are cheating, as well as slutty...sometimes it annoys me so much that we are doing makeups to please those sexist men. Though I can say that I have my own style, but how much is my taste influenced by the sexism culture?
Xiangqi Li Eh to be honest I didn't yet stumble upon such videos where they say about catching the eye of men lol haha. I know a lot of gals are doing it just for fun and self-expression, me included (I don't even do face make-up, just play with the eyes mostly and love colours and stuff). Well in the west there is the '' the 'no make-up' make-up look''... you're saying that the trend comes from Asia, or that it just extended there too? I mean, I guess it always existed in a way Aaand I guess that the guys who think make-up is cheating (and that doesn't really limit to asian men only...) - and the gals that use it with that intent - are pretty shallow? :)) They deserve each other :)) (btw, so cool talking with someone from other parts of the world that explains stuff ^^ thanks)
I love your take on different cultures and trends, it's so positive! There's too much negativity in the world, and it's incredibly refreshing to see someone who compliments and encourages individuality and comments rather than judges different styles. Thank you for brightening my day!
Lisa, can you please do a tutorial on Edie Sedgwick's make-up look? It is incredibly artistic and different and it would be a pleasure to watch you do it ^^
Hi Lisa, I just recently found your channel and have been watching your videos the past few days. I can honestly say I learned so much about makeup techniques in the last 48 hours from you than I ever have from other TH-cam channels. Thank you so much for sharing your tips and tricks your knowledge and talent is so inspirational
I really look up to you as a person, you're one of the few makeup gurus on youtube that I can tell is extremely intelligent and isn't airhead-ish in the slightest. Love your videos!
I love you for mentioning boys and girls enjoying make up. I love that you are looking at overall trends, but mentioning the huge variety and inspirations. Thank you for keeping make up real and accessible!
Always so beautiful and therapeutic to watch you Lisa! loved this educational video and a showcase of the difference between what the east and west consider beautiful xxx
I'm by no means an expert, but I wonder if the trends in perspective areas are driven due to the differences in facial features (in addition to other factors such as culturural influences, etc.) I saw this on my own child (who looks more like my husband, of Chinese descend) and my own and I suddenly find a new fascination about facial features. East Asian faces tend to be more "flat" in the contour (e.g. usually low nose bridge, wide planes of the cheeks, etc.). Luminosity would reflect especially well on flat surfaces, enhancing the smoothness of the face. This is also I think why skin is such an importance (the texture, free of blemish, pigmentation, etc.) because it is the most prominent feature of the face (as in Japan, Geisha's lips are painted as flower buds, small and almost like an accent on the face). Whereas in the Western, contour + highlighting is exactly done to make pronounce the depth and the high points of the faces, contouring on the sides of the nose, for e.g. only enhances the beauty that is already there -- in line with a more pronounce bone structure of face. High cheek-bones are considered beautiful in Western, probably not so much in Asia (which is quite odd since I do notice many East Asian women have beautiful cheek bones & bone structure). Eye makeup also enhances the socket, something lacking in East Asian facial feature (and thus the makeup emphasize the reflection on the eyelids and lash line with mascara, liner, lashes, etc.) Lovely video as always, I love your take & translation of the beauty trends between these two worlds.
I disagree because I always find Western style less natural and more dramatic than Asian style. I think your 'flat' face remark apply more to Chinese because Japanese have well defined nose bridges and cheeks. That's why if you compare their celebrities without makeup to Hollywood stars, the former still look great and fresh whereas the latter always look totally different without.
As someone who is ethnically Chinese, I agree. There's a difference in the perception of youth and a difference in facial features. I remember how disgruntled I felt about western makeup as a young girl because everything made me look older (which wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but I wanted to look my age). I was so pleasantly surprised when I found girls doing East Asian inspired looks. I felt like it complimented my face better in terms of wanting to look my age, but cuter. Makeup really forced me to study my facial features and I realized that my facial structure resembles a baby's facial structure. Rounded face, flatter facial contours, flat eye lids, rounded eyes, slightly squashed nose, a tiny mouth, and flatter brows. I decided to work with it instead of against it. My mom is from the Han tribe in China, which apparently the women are known for these features. (And apparently there's more Hans than any other tribes and they've also migrated to Japan and Korea.)
I just realized I could've just said Asian makeup trends made me feel my features were validated while western makeup made me feel incredibly inadequate.
What I appreciate the most is the fact that you don't promote products, you train and amuse us. You seem to enjoy your profession and have really deep dived into to make up. Respect!
I'm from the west but live in Japan, and I much prefer eastern makeup trends. I do use a lot of American makeup, but in a more Japanese way. It definitely makes you look more youthful and fresh!
Such a unique video! I love how well thought out your videos are. Even though I'm an American, I've been using some of the Asian techniques for a while while now (I didn't realize that what I was doing was popular anywhere, it's just what I did.) As a 45 year old, I prefer most of the emphasis to be on perfecting my skin while avoiding matte or full coverage foundations, with liner super close to the lashline and a wide-eyed dolly look on the lashes. I also tend to use bluish pink blushes on the cheeks, a very light swipe of that color just above the crease on the eye, and a gentle pop of that same color on the nose. I adore a good red lip as much as the next girl but for everyday I go for sheer washes of color. I love the Dior Volupte Rouge Shine and the color in oil products. So pretty and fresh. People are always shocked when I tell them my age. Most people guess that I'm in my early thirties. This only happens when I wear makeup though, so those Asian techniques definitely work for a Westerner too. I hope that the West starts to be influenced more by the East. Dramatic looks can be really beautiful but I think they are misplaced in everyday use. So often when I watch a TH-camr do a look, I often think how fresh and pretty they look until they break out the black winged liner, smoky shadows, too-dark bronzer, and crazy highlighting. My hope is that the next trends will be in response to the recent ones and will swing the other way.
Even though i'm a guy (gay but still) and i don't use makeup, i can't get enough of you! I love seeing you, but most importantly i can't get enough of your knowledge around makeup not only technically but culturally. You seem such a good person! Love from Greece!
Just came back from Korea and am currently in Japan on the bus on my way to my grandmas house! So true what you said about the dewy and brightened skin trend. EVERYONE in Korea had dewy, literally flawless skin. I loved this video!! I ended up buying Dr. Jart's bb cream and am inspired to do very minimal makeup like the Koreans. Bb cream, a tiny bit of powder, mascara and a bright lip. Good to go!
Hopefully kids growing up enjoying the various looks around the world will have more love and compassion for people who are different. If this can come about it will be a true blessing! Across the world we are more alike than we are different! (Thank you, Miss Maya!)
Love her commentary throughout the tutorial; I usually skip over those to get to finished product but the knowledge and history she brings is mesmerizing. Worth watching over again and again. Bravo!
Amazing!! such a unique idea and both lovely on you! I am always blown away by your work always learning new things. the best on TH-cam without a doubt x
Lisa, I watch a lot of make up application. Your knowledge and professional education in all things make up and product information, as well as your keen eye for current trends is unmatched! You are the best hands down! Your voice is hypnotic so its a win, win for me. Thank you for taking the time to educate your fans. Well done!
As I have watched your videos for so many years I can definitely tell that your personal style is a mix of both. Which is also my style because you've been my makeup teacher for all those years :-)
It's so strange to see my "natural" lip liner UD Naked 2 that matches my lips perfectly on yours Lisa as a "contoured lip" pencil... We do come in all shades ;)
Such an interesting video, to see how we differ in what we think is desireable and how we want to look. I am a new subscriber and now I am overindulging in your videos! A litte request if I may, Emma Watsons fantastic make up from the met gala this year. So beautiful!
+Jennie Sparr welcome to my channel! I agree, Emma always looks gorgeous! I did a video of a cover look I did on her a while back - you might like that one too X
In my country the paler you are the prettier you are whereas in western countries people love to tan.Such different beauty and makeup standards everywhere.
well maybe because I am korean, but I really do think asian makeup looks amazing on you! You explained and applied our trends so well. Just to elaborate on the thin eyeliner, us Northeast Asians have smaller eyes and mobile-lids. So if we thicken the liners it actually creates the optical illusion of having smaller eyes. Thus we keep our lines as thin as possible to show some skin left on our lids. It is easier to understand in person though :P
I'm so, so drawn to the softer, cuter, sweeter, younger Asian style of make-up. Every time your completed "East" face would pop on the screen, my eyes would go wide, trying o see it more. So pretty!
I really like the western look (big surprise) except for the contouring and highlights, I do not like that look at all. I think I like a mix of the two styles; taking things from both and combining them.
+Hippeeatheart Same! As a young American woman, I love the makeup styles of the West, but as a half Japanese woman, I can't do the most extreme or overly contoured looks because I have smaller eyes and a rounder face. So I like to take the fresh, youthful skin and eye-enlarging tricks of the Asian makeup trends but in bronzy Western colors (golds and browns for the eyes but kept to the edges so they don't overwhelm them and peachy tan nudes for the lips done in the traditional way with lip liner). A true mix of Asian American, just like me :)
+Erica Lynn I have made quite a few videos about East Asian makeup and styles. One tutorial of a Korean makeup look and a couple about Japanese (including a haul) X
This just proves why this channel is so apart from the TH-cam Beauty Gurus. I loved every second of this video. Its nearly half hour but totally worth the time.
Lisa you are such a pleasant person, and so modest too. I have stopped watching your videos just for the makeup, I watch them now because your voice and the way you talk just calms me down and makes me sort of peaceful. Take care!
I love this tutorial so much, I feel like I'm right in between though, I don't suit heavy bronzer and I'm really pale so I totally think I will be using more Korean and Japanese influences in my every day make up.
I love seeing your take on the current trends, you take what people are doing but you do it in such a classic way that's not so overdone! Plus the asian beauty trends are equally gorgeous, I love their ideas on keeping skin looking so natural!
watching your videos feels like breathing fresh air on the beauty department. I love the way you don't stick with just one trend, and you actually teach not "how to" but about those looks. You are not a slave of make up trends and teach us that freedom. I particularly never was really into make up, until I discovered your videos and I fell in love with the playfulness you bring on it. Thank you SO much! :)
Thank you so much for this, I really appreciate you taking the time. Thanks for your kind words, it means a lot! X
+Lisa Eldridge wow didn't even expect you'd see it as you get so many comments! Do love the channel so much, been spending the last few days watching near nonstop (trying to get some ideas for a wedding guest look in a few weeks)! Can't believe never happened upon it up until recently. :)
I agree. Not everyone has the money for the high end items some youtubers can afford.
You look a lot younger with the Asian makeup. Very youthful and bright. However, the Western makeup does make you look very glam and bold.
I couldn't have said it better.
Yes!
"Makeup becomes only dangerous when there's one style and we all have to conform to that one style,"
Well said, and thank you for being always so awesome and inspirational, Lisa xxx
Cup of tea and biscuits, and a Lisa video. Nothing could be more relaxing. :)
absolutely agreed
+IrishRose. You sound like my kinda gal!
It is funny that western women want more almond shape eyes while eastern girls would like rounder eyes. 'The neighbours garden is always greener'.
👍
Same here
+Cristina Renteria
Hi Cristina, can you please tell me what korean brand are you using? Thank you
+Adriana Valentina Hey Adriana, if you're interested in Korean skincare and makeup, the website testerkorea dot com sells a huge variety of great products from drug store level to luxury brands.
Your video is. always always very educational, no showing off or posing, love your work!!
Very well remarked. And to me that defines the essence of a truthfully (very) good artist as she is, doubtless.
+Cath Zhou Yes she is! That's why we love her :*
Agree!
👍
indeed!
I can see this being expanded into a full documentary type piece. What a pleasure to watch, not just the makeup technique but I also there were so many interesting facts to be learnt!
+Anne I'm glad I kept it long! ; ) X
The generosity of Ms. Eldridge never ceases to amaze me!
It is astounding that she offers this education to virtually anybody for free on TH-cam. And what an education it is…
The words "thank you" really seem inadequate, but they will have to suffice.
*sighs*
Beautiful video, loved it..thank you Ms. Eldridge!
lol Everyone always want what they don't have and takes for granted (or just gets bored of) what they do.
+Ss yp in no way its to that extreme, chill bro
In a way, the Asian style makeup is relatively fool-proof in my opinion, and the Western style require a bit more skill in order to look good because you are working with deeper colors, and there is a lot of shaping. You can easily look dirty if all the smoky shadow and bronzer are not blended correctly.
TheKillerQueenfan saying that Asians seem to geared to looking like a little girl or doll is down right stereotyping
@ TheKillerQueenFan
It's not at all about looking like a doll or a little girl.
Lisa, would you ever consider doing a video explaining the make up application and history of the Geisha? It would be totally fascinating!
Agreed!!
+ladyjaneofdunans Not sure what that is, but love watching cultural-based videos.
ladyjaneofdunans oh, ok I looked it up, and my word it really is something. Is it some kind of Japanese theatre makeup, or kind of like drag queens in western countries. Sorry if you find the comparison to drag queens offensive because that's kind of what geisha makeup reminded me of :)
+MultiBigbird01 you should google about them
+MultiBigbird01 If you like to read, Memoirs of a Geisha is a wonderful book that you should check out.
As an Asian, I really love you because of your open mind about different ideas of beauty. You really nailed the eastern part.
Love you, Lisa.
+Xin Cheng Thank you X
Lisa Huffaker haha
I love that your videos so frequently have real "educational" components, outside of just technique. So interesting and unique.
I've seen tutorials similar to this, but they were never as informative as this particular video, tbh. You're an inspiration to young ladies (and gentlemen)!
30 minutes of Lisa, really good sushi and some wine...best Friday night by far. Love you, Lisa.
My gosh the asian/east look is soo fantastic! Especially the eyes and the brightening up! So soft and fresh looking.
Please Lsa, can you do the same video but for skincare please xxx
+Salma Klein yesss!!!
Yeeeep!!
yeeees please
Yes please! There are so many Korean skincare products, it's difficult for newbies to figure out. ✌
+Salma Klein Agree!!!
She does look ten years younger in Asian make up
I think if you look at just the makeup, the Asian look is definitely more youthful, but I don't think it actually affects what age she looks.
Vitalina yeah but not in a good way. The Asian makeup is something I would've done when I was 5 it's childish not really younger looking. I do love how she did the western makeup. The cat eyes were really sexy. :) and in my opinion more youthful than the other style.
I don't wear makeup ever. Like ever but I can't stop watching these videos. They are so educational and fun and...soothing
If men find that attractive...that seems rapey.
arxsyn being a fair European I suffer from that too
I am a beauty a Chinese beauty blogger based in Canada, I get a lot of hate on the fact that I apply my makeup differently than the majority of the Asian girls.
Thank you so much, for making these videos for us to enjoy, despite your busy working life.
seriously, the asian look makes you 10 years younger
agree
Agreed. But I think she looks more attractive In the Western, if a little older than the Asian look. Very interesting.
yes yes
Very true! Whenever I go full glam western style I always end up looking a lot older than I am
True and she looks gorgeous with Eastern style of makeup. Very youthful~ ☺️
Lisa, your videos never fail to be interesting, innovative and unique! You are unbelievably artistic and it is just an honour to be able to see your art! Thank you!
+epbsmoses Thank you, so pleased you enjoyed the film X
+Lisa Eldridge I cannot believe I just talked to Lisa Eldridge! That's made my day! Thank you
I love these types of videos. Lisa is by far the best makeup artist/creator on the planet. I trust every single word she says. I much prefer her style than any 'guru' on YT. I'm so glad you came to TH-cam because your advice has been invaluable to me. You're a true professional, a true artist and an amazing creator. 💛
Warmed my heart a bit when you mentioned boys at the end there, Lisa. Thank you and keep up the superb work you've always done :)
Hello Lisa, I would love it if you did a French-style makeup - I don't really see the typical French makeup corresponding to the Western one you demonstrated here!
Well done Lisa! The amount of makeup knowledge and expertise that you possess is unheard of!!
Thank you!
Isn't Lisa just absolutely gorgeous?
In terms of makeup, this really was a great moment of education. I enjoyed every bit of it because every stroke or color choice came with a story. I watched it twice just in case I missed anything. You are the O.G of makeup.
Lisa you are such a professional and classy woman, your videos are so educational :) Your videos are the only ones i watch from the begining to the very end without skipping :) You really inspire me.
The makeup anthropologist! Loved seeing the comparison in trends, beautiful work as always.
They're both so different, but in Lisa's hands they both look outstanding.
Oh my God! Am I seeing right? A half an hour Lisa video talking about trends? I feel like it's my birthday!
Cold, windy, rainy evening in bed watching another tutorial from Lisa! So happy 😊 can't wait to try these looks myself! X
But looks more child-like and that means that it embodies more child-like qualities like a sort of delicacy, frailty, dependancy - I don't mean that in a bad way, just find it really interesting
(I guess in some exaggerated trendy western looks or instagram make-up looks you could think about a sort of 'obedience' too... in the sense that you're making yourself 'exaggerately' sexy and attractive for possible future mates lol.
I mean, I guess it always existed in a way
Aaand I guess that the guys who think make-up is cheating (and that doesn't really limit to asian men only...) - and the gals that use it with that intent - are pretty shallow? :)) They deserve each other :))
(btw, so cool talking with someone from other parts of the world that explains stuff ^^ thanks)
It is incredibly artistic and different and it would be a pleasure to watch you do it ^^
yes!!!
oh yes that would be so cool
Omg yes!!!! I'd love this
+Torrie Please do!!!
I would love to see that
Hi Lisa,
I just recently found your channel and have been watching your videos the past few days.
Lovely as usual. Your tutorials are kind of different from so many others because you actually know what you are doing.
Always so beautiful and therapeutic to watch you Lisa! loved this educational video and a showcase of the difference between what the east and west consider beautiful xxx
I appreciate that you took the time to explain how/why you were qualified to do this. it's a small detail, but I found it valuable.
I'm by no means an expert, but I wonder if the trends in perspective areas are driven due to the differences in facial features (in addition to other factors such as culturural influences, etc.)
I saw this on my own child (who looks more like my husband, of Chinese descend) and my own and I suddenly find a new fascination about facial features.
Eye makeup also enhances the socket, something lacking in East Asian facial feature (and thus the makeup emphasize the reflection on the eyelids and lash line with mascara, liner, lashes, etc.)
Lovely video as always, I love your take & translation of the beauty trends between these two worlds.
+Dimitris Vassiladiotis It's her voice and accent that really get me hooked on her videos. She's such a relaxing person to listen to and learn from :)
Good to go!
+Lisa J Have a great time in Japan x
Hopefully kids growing up enjoying the various looks around the world will have more love and compassion for people who are different. If this can come about it will be a true blessing! Across the world we are more alike than we are different! (Thank you, Miss Maya!)
LOVE this video, not only the actual concept but the way it was edited and presented. Well done as usual.
Could you do more 'makeup history' videos? xx
I love the concept of this tutorial ❤️
Lisa, I love your videos! they're a mix of makeup and education about other cultures :) and your accent is beautiful :D
I absolutely love the Eastern look! It's fresh, clean, and lovely. It has a look of innocence and beauty in a simplistic form. So pretty.
Lisa, your videos are an education. I love learning about other cultures - thank you for this video XX
You got me tearing up at the outro. This was absolutely fantastic. Thanks for making makeup a happy inclusive space Lisa! XX
Lisa, I watch a lot of make up application. Your knowledge and professional education in all things make up and product information, as well as your keen eye for current trends is unmatched! You are the best hands down! Your voice is hypnotic so its a win, win for me. Thank you for taking the time to educate your fans. Well done!
I have found Japanese and Korean makeup trends absolutely fascinating for years, and I LOVE that you're doing more videos like this! Fantastic!
+Sandra Claws haha yes we do and its great! X
+Lisa Eldridge Lots of love from Italy, you are an amazing inspiration! Xoxo
+Lisa Eldridge would you like to try to remake Farrah Fawcett's iconic makeup look in Charlie's Angels?
I love this point of view...Seeing the eastern version makes you want that minimalism...definitely an eye opener
After all this years, when I was watching this for the first time, I still think, that the east style looks more youthfull. But great work as allways!
obviously she's demonstrating other styles and teaching us existing styles, but her content is SO original. I love watching Lisa!
That cushion foundation looks AMAZING
Such an interesting video, to see how we differ in what we think is desireable and how we want to look.
I am a new subscriber and now I am overindulging in your videos!
A litte request if I may, Emma Watsons fantastic make up from the met gala this year.
So beautiful!
+Jennie Sparr welcome to my channel! I agree, Emma always looks gorgeous! I did a video of a cover look I did on her a while back - you might like that one too X
Oh, thank you!
I will look at it right away!
X
In my country the paler you are the prettier you are whereas in western countries people love to tan.Such different beauty and makeup standards everywhere.
+lubna s in my country the paler or fairer you are the prettier and attractive u look
i live in Pakistan where do u live
well maybe because I am korean, but I really do think asian makeup looks amazing on you!
+Anna Kang Um, Northeast Asia is like Manchuria and Mongolia..
Jenny M. Technically Northeast Asia is China Mongolia Korea and Japan :)
Hm, true. Sorry, by hearing the 'North'east my mind went towards North Asia like....Russia, lol. Sorry, my bad!
+Hippeeatheart agree 100%
+Hippeeatheart Same! As a young American woman, I love the makeup styles of the West, but as a half Japanese woman, I can't do the most extreme or overly contoured looks because I have smaller eyes and a rounder face. So I like to take the fresh, youthful skin and eye-enlarging tricks of the Asian makeup trends but in bronzy Western colors (golds and browns for the eyes but kept to the edges so they don't overwhelm them and peachy tan nudes for the lips done in the traditional way with lip liner). A true mix of Asian American, just like me :)
I love the Asian look! Where would one find more on these products and trends (in English)?
+Erica Lynn I have made quite a few videos about East Asian makeup and styles. One tutorial of a Korean makeup look and a couple about Japanese (including a haul) X
I recommend the website sokoglam!
+Lisa Eldridge Thank you for replying! I just watched and enjoyed them all. Wonderful work, thank you Lisa!
+missrachelb Thank you for the tip, I will check them out. Hopefully they ship abroad!
Erica Lynn They ship from the US
Fascinating video! I love how youthful the Asian inspired look is - will definitely take some ideas from that!
So interesting! I was absolutely captivated by this video ☺️ Thanks Lisa!
I really enjoyed watching this video, which smartly mixed the makeup trends of the east & the west. Sending love from Seoul! 😌💕
+helena kim thanks very happy you liked it. Sending love back to you in Seoul, I love it there (particularly for beauty shopping!) X
Wow the Eastern look looks amazing on you Lisa!
Russian girls love you Lisa :)
+Татьяна Бур Thank you! My book recently launched in Russian language too - so happy X
+Lisa Eldridge already bought a copy, it's soooo interesting! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us)
+Lisa Eldridge Please come to Russia ))) Also.....your channel is very inspiring :-)
+Татьяна Бур yeah, we do=)
+Lisa Eldridge i saw so many instagrams of the russian version! so cool!!
