The video has a noble objective but there's a problem with the information on the "resistor". More than just a resistor the component removed from the car is a "thermistor" or "temperature sensitive resistor". As temperature goes up the resistance goes down and vice versa at ambient temperature it remains open. This makes the component the control you want on the car for the radiator fan I.e as the engine gets hot +200 degrees the resistor senses the temperature and drops to a preset value that turns on the fan. As temp drops the thermistor increases value and shuts current to the fan motor and a cycle of temperature enabled cooling takes place.
What happened is his test was a short of the thermistor which by the way has that big green thing as an actual resistor- that's not the thermistor which is a small can type component mounted between the resistor and an external pin. So our guy was merely shorting out the component simulating high temperature just enough for the test since a short isn't what level the thermistor reaches.
It is a test still but expect your in circuit test to require running the car to the "turn-on" temperature settings.

sorry, does the thermistor send a low or high fan speed signal? my 2008 town country truck only runs the fan on low speed. the low and high relays are fine. Thank you very much

    To prevent corrosion,
    rust and oxidation
    on,relay pins, junction box holes
    connection or battery posts
    and wire or cable terminals
    apply dap of silicon /
    dielectric grease.
    So, add dap of
    dielectric grease
    junction box hole.
Also, it will ease insertion & removal
of relays, fuses and any component
that has pins and or legs.

Can you explain the symptoms that led to this replacement? I think mine might be faulty, but before I spend 50$ on a part, I'd like to find out.

Radiator cooling fan has 2 speeds: Normal and Jet Engine. To get Jet Engine you either turn the AC on or have the engine overheat to about 100-110C (212-230F). To get the normal speed you need to add something to the 12V circuit between the battery and fan to make it get less voltage, thus spin slower. Here comes that thingamajigger resistor thingy. When it goes bad you lose your normal fan speed and the radiator cooling fan ONLY comes on when the Jet Engine requirements are met, which is no bueno as far as engine temperature go.
So symptom no. 1 is engine temps getting toasty, accompanied by the Jet Engine fan speed.
Kinda late reply but hell...it's something. Hope it still helps.

What was the reason you changed the resistor in the first place? No low speed?
When you did the resistor test. Were you testing the resistor your took out of the new one you put in?

I have an 09 charger 3.5 and, mine looks almost like yours except, the female has 4 leads and the male resistor has 3 points.
Why doesn't the male resistor have 4 points to match the 4 female leads?
Thank you so much for your video and help.
GOD bless people like you trying to help other people.

My fan resistor is broken on my 2012 dodge caravan. What exactly does the fan resistor do?

    • @warhawk1302
      @warhawk1302 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Coefficient of resistance, the hotter the element gets the more electrical current it conducts until it's trips to "on".

When testing the resistor, does it mater which side I have my lead hooked to. When it is hooked on one side it works, on the other it does not.

What exactly is the purpose of the resistor? I'm guessing it must limit current, but does it do anything else?

It gives the slow radiator fan mode, then bypassed for warp 9 super cooling lol :-D

Didnt make that too helpfull for you to get to, youve done many cabin fan resistors that were less arm twisting and easyer.
Easy-ish to fit, but a swine to slide out :-(
That pot/nichrome wire resistor reminds me of the ones in old valve/tube radios, they lasted years :-).
Cant beat a basic wirewound resistor :-)
