  • Let's have a go at this 2007 Chrysler Town and Country that has an engine light on with a code P0480. Pretty classic problem on these beasts and I'll show you how I diagnose these cooling fans.
    Cool rivet gun huh? Want one? Look here : astore.amazon.com/httpswwwy083...

    Thank you so much for posting this video! I am a 59 year old somewhat disabled woman with next to no money and I have this exact problem. I have spent the last hour searching for a solution on line and came across your video which made the fix look almost as though I could do it myself - almost - if I have the right tools. The only tool I do not have is the one for removing the rivet. However, I am going to check for the price of the part and find out if some kind fellow will help me do this. All because you took the time to to film the repair & post it! What a great guy you are!. God bless you and yours richly! Shelley in southern Saskatchewan, Canada

    You guys are pretty awesome. Your videos have saved me countless hours of frustration and my sanity.
    My wife insisted on a used 2007 T&C even though they are notorious for AC and wiring issues. I voted Honda Odyssey, she said we'd get more van for our money. Lol....In the ONE year we've had it I've completely rewired both sliding passenger doors and fixed the rear AC. Now there is no air blowing out of the front vents. The rear vents are fine, however the front vents don't move air at all. When at highway speed you can feel cool air coming out of them slightly,but not enough to make any difference. We live in Mobile, Alabama, so we know HOT!!!!
    Now that I've watched this video I'll be sure to check out the relay. I'm pretty sure that's the problem, however since I don't have a super-sweet rivet gun (just Glock, Sig Sauer and Walther PPQ's) I'm concerned about how to fasten the relay. I know you discussed it in this video but I couldn't hear it that well. Is it possible that you could respond to my question on how to attach the fan relay without a rivet tool? Thank you, and God knows you have plenty of job security servicing Dodge vans. Too bad they can't seem to understand that sales will increase when they stop selling vehicles that fall apart in 4 years! Honda seems to understand that concept quite well!

    Just a word of CAUTION, when probing control wires do not use this method on most/all vehicles! use a Digital voltmeter or a computer safe circuit tester. Eric O is a trained professional and knows where and what to probe with his scope on a rope (test light). When Eric was probing the control wire at 6:30 and heard the vehicle chime it sure got his attention quick.

    Love seeing the "scope-on-a-rope" master in action! Pretty cool how you checked the low-amp control circuit with a test light too. I would back that up with a quick relay bypass test with a jumper wire and measure the fan current draw just for kicks :)
    And the good old "time constraint" excuse to not use a real scope...don't pick up bad habits now Eric haha!

      @SouthMainAuto  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +motoYam82 Haha hey man I am in a real big hurry and have no time for that! Come on you know the drill haha. I was thinking of doing a amp draw test but I came up with the question... what is good with out a known good to compare too. One thing I do know the start up current and running current is less than 40 amps ;)

    • @rjdimonda
      @rjdimonda 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is an important comment cause an old fan can draw too much power and cause premature failure of the relay. This test should be shown. But what is a reasonable fan draw current/

    Great Video. The only extra thing I would have liked to have seen before ordering a relay is to see you jam 12v to that fan circuit to make sure the fan actually spun. Just extra confirmation that the fan was good.

    I own 2 of the 2001 through 2007 generation vans. They are very service friendly. I do most of the repairs myself. Rear plugs and upper O2 sensor are not hard you just pull the wiper tray off which is simpler than you think. The radiators come out easier than the generation before it. The heater core can be swapped out if necessary without the dashboard being removed. Brakes, suspension, window motors, and power lock actuators are all very easily done. I do work on other peoples vans because they are not difficult for me to do so. The one downfall is that if you do not have the lower body cladding on the vans which is a premium option they rust quicker. Proper washing and waxing of the van would avoid this, but not to many owners care about them enough to do it as often as it should be done.

    Thank you brother I don’t have inoperable fans, well 1 of them isn’t coming on when the thermostat opens. Looks like both should definitely come on together and I couldn’t find that info. I had a feeling your video would show them both running since u are always thorough. I assumed both should come on but I’ve seen other people say 1 is for ac and 1 is for the cooling system, didn’t seem right but I appreciate u always showing the end result🙏

    Thanks for the video. I got a 1988 camaro with the opposite problem. The fan runs all the time. My suspicion is the last owner messed with. Couple quick looks and I don't see anything messed with, but needs more investigation. Anyways my point is your motivating me to fix it, not just say...whatever, atleast the fans on, not off.

  • @mikebrennan4534
    @mikebrennan4534 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    also a good idea to check the amp draw on the fans. as the fans age the amp draw gets higher and burns up the relay and sometimes even the wiring. have seen several of these come back due to fans being the root of the problem. happens alot on the jeep grand cherokee with same set up. just some food for thought.

    Daughter's 03 , 3 3, Caravan. Replaced Brake Master Cylinder due to pedal sink started car drove 1/4 mile left front brake was dragging, replaced front left caliper( old one stuck wore out pad damaged caliper)both front brake pads, drove 1 mile gased up with engine off, restarted drove back 1 mile. Next day bled all wheel cylinders with engine off. Then crank but no start. Codes 118, 123, 508, 509, 1193. All codes were present on old pcm and now on new one. Replaced Crankshaft position sensor, tps sensor, coilpack, coilpack connector, spark plugs , pcm.Gotta iod parasitic draw. Remove iat fuse draw disappears, returns when fuse reinserted. IAT clicks when fuse is reinserted and sometimes radiator runs briefly simultaneously then quits within seconds. Antitheft light doesnt come on , never. Not with key in start position, not when arming alarm with fob or key. New batteries in fob, tried 2 different keys. Tried charging batteries, tried different battery , tried jumping . All fuses good, all fuse hot legs above 12 volt except IOD. ASD clicks with key in run position. Fuel pump runs a few secs when key in run position. Lights will blink mysteriously sometimes. It Did this before new pcm and now does it with new one. Reset computer several times. Help a brother Eric.

    So what if the fan activates when the AC is running but not when it is off? I suspect the cooling sensor, the engine is really hot and the coolant is boiling but the fan never activates unless the ac is on. I did get a P0480 code though.

  • @nugget5103
    @nugget5103 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What's great about this is that you test your wires also to the PCM, so you can rule them out as being bad using this method. If this works, and your relay doesn't, then you know the harness connector isn't connecting or the relay is bad.

    • @davestorm6718
      @davestorm6718 ปีที่แล้ว

      I ended up hot wiring the fan to a switch in the dash, just can't forget to turn it off (lol). Good fan, good relay, good wiring, bad PCM (not worth dropping a fortune on a new one as they're worth so little money anymore). Next failure will be the transmission *about 1 per 100K miles. Chrysler has never figured out how to make a transmission.

    QUESTION PLEASE! It seems my fan doesnt come on until the engine gauge is 3/4 up. Then the fan kicks on and the temp gauge goes to half then just below half. WHat do you think?

    Nice & quick with a scope on a rope. Just got my Astro die grinders from your store last week along with some abrasives and love the angle die grinder. Nice fit, lots of power for a great price! I normally use my Snap-on air drill but the Astro is so much lighter & compact so my Snap-on air tools are going to get a few more Astro companions to include "Big Nasty" and the Nano's. The Astro's can get into a lot of tight places...small but powerful.

      +South Main Auto Repair Hey where you been hiding that video? I love my Snap-on tools but I try and buy the best & baddest tools on the market. Knipex has the best pliers and I have a drawer full of both Snap-on & Knipex and Knipex are simply better. I've watched every video on your channel and am impressed with all of the Astro tools so I figured I'd buy the Astro die grinders & set them up for brake hub cleaning & rotor resurfacing and love them. Next will be "Big Nasty" and then I'll get the Nano's. I love my Snap-on MG725 w/810 ft lbs of torque but I think my Astro air tools will become the preferred tool in my hand. The video was awesome and I'd rather see a tool review done by a mechanic in head to head competition & let the best tool win! If it holds up to the daily use of a professional mechanic where the majority of time we are abusing tools then it'll probably be in my shop.

      +South Main Auto Repair I think a healthy fan system should have a in rush amperage of 15 amps and as soon as stabilizes around 8 or 9 amps. Off course this would vary a little depending on manufactures!!

      Oh no it is no big deal I was just curious. I think 8 or 9 amps is pretty low to be honest with ya. Blower motors in dash draw more than that usually. I guess my thought is , is if you have nothing to compare it to then in my mind it is just a number. It may be a good idea to gather that data and jot it down to start to find a "norm" though? Matter of fact I may just start doing that :)

    My 03 caravan fans run but only when the engine warms up not when the ac is first turned on. Ac throws warm air until you get moving down the highway. I had a 3.8l but I put in a 3.3l about 3 years ago, Ac worked great until now.

    What if the test light doesn't come on when testing for pulse width modulated signal? You tested it around minute 7-8 in vid. How would you test the wiring then.

    Coolant temp sensor changed, relay changed, tested fans with jumper leads to the battery, both work. Checked 40A fuse, still good. Fans still never seem to come on when the car is running. What else is there on the circuit? Anything other than wires, and PCM?

      Mine's going to the junk yard. Never again will I buy a Chrysler anything (nor a Ford anything). They've been making garbage for 50 years, neither have figured out how to design a transmission, either.

    For the EGR here we reprogram the ECU and turn off the EGR, completely delete the map for it and block the passage on the intake with some kind of a shim instead of the regular gasket. After doing that you will never have EGR problems and you wont dump junk into your intake and engine.

    So I just did exactly as you did but when I went to run the ac with the probe in the light never came on but the fans will both turn on if I have the relay plugged in with the ac running ? Kind of stumped right now I tried replacing the relay and as soon as I drove it engine light came right back on

      South Main Auto Repair I guess that's how I am now. I'm younger than you, but it does always seem like my truck is breaking down. I've done so much to it too, whereas this van is nearly bone stock. Plastic and rubber components have been replaced, but it's got over 200k on it and the transmission and engine haven't been touched. Both of those have been replaced in my truck with a little bit more mileage.
      Isn't it a little hard to work on your own cars when you do it for a living all the time? That would drive me nuts. It would be like working after you got done working all day. That's really why I will never do it for a living, even though I do have fun with it.

    I have a 2013 ram CV van cooling fan come on when warm but then will not shut off do you shut the key off everything seems to check out but the check engine light stays on with this existing problem the same thing happens with the AC relay is good motor seems to run well.I can't find any confirmation that it uses a fan control module I don't think it does. Thank you for feedback

  • @markwatling5991

    Thanks for this helpful video. I have a 2002 caravan 3.3 with the same problem. I followed all of your tests, checking all the wires on the cooling fan relay plug. The only one which failed (wouldn't light the test light) was on the small guage control wire (duty cycle). I checked it with engine on with AC on with hot engine and the control wire did not pulse (dim to bright ) at all. It looks like the fans are not being commanded to run. I have spun both rotors on the fans and they are not seized. How should I proceed? Can I command the fans to run by jumping them? Thanks very much for your time :)

    • @markwatling5991
      @markwatling5991 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelloganirvin Hi there. I checked the ground wire below the left headlight which was tight. I tightened it a little more. Wiggled the harness all through that process. I also changed the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. Through these things the problem somehow got fixed. Fans are working again. Thanks.
